  • In this episode we work hard to seal up the cabin from the elements using blocking, foam insulation, rockwool batt insulation and plastic wrap vapor barrier. We are now working on the outhouse: • Building Outhouse at O...
I will then relate hockey back into life lessons for young boys and how I strategically raise the potential of all the boys I coach. Sometimes we need to hear the same life-lessons from more men than just our Dad's.
As always we are using our HD36 Norwood Portable Sawmill.

A big struggle with our cabin is keeping it warm using natural materials that are inherently leaky. So we really need to close in all the gaps.

Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient.
We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season.
Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin.
In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

Young man! You have no idea of what an impact that your video has made in my heart and mind today!
It can be correlated to this scare that the world has been thrown into. Of course a virus can be serious, but NOT the exploitation thereof as it has turned into.
Parralelling Bible wisdom and team spirit are indeed synonymous.
I'm 75, but your insight and wisdom far exceeds your possible years of absorption capacity.
You are wise to not let the NOISE from Debbie Downer cause you to
      justify ANYTHING :-)

Feel connected to this video. Man what you said at 31:50 about having a solid frame, being an oak for your girlfriend. For a good few years now I come home and watch sailing videos (Delos), camping/survivalist/man about the woods(you/JoeRob/MySelf/TA), metal forging (Alec Steele), fabrication (Fireball Tools/can't remember)...which I paid no consideration to the connection between them all, at all. Then I had a realisation about the connection some time ago - I have no Dad at all growing up and sit watching videos to replace what would have been sitting as a kid watching my Dad go about his work, as comfort when home in evening. You should know that man. It's not as meaningful as it might seem, but yes, it's probably not apparent that there's this body of people comfort watching. It's obvious when you see it written out, but, yes. Dig that you saw last comment and have doubled down, although maybe just solved with carrying on about your endeavours and not focusing on it specifically with line of vids, there's some % risk of that

yeah, my dad was a cool person until the army and war ... then, when i was 8 he decided he didn't want kids (4 of us) ... but i think every person watching is comfort watching in some way ... i wish i could go out and camp, but technology (hit by a car) changed my ability to do so ... TWB introduced me to a whole new world of camping i've never thought of ... now, i own 100 pocket knives and can have an experience with him as he goes about his travels ... i do disagree in that forward is an easier position than center, defense, or, especially, goalie ... i played defense on a roller hockey team because i couldn't skate; however, every hotshot forward or center bounced off of me when they looked up on their rush ...

Full stop. Hey guys, I used to work for a pretty well known pest control company and my recommendation would be to ensure all air gaps are sealed. mice will crawl around looking for airflow and when they feel it they'll start chewing, If all gaps are sealed along the "fascia" and what would be the soffit gap then the mice wont be able to get through from that angle....still many more ways for a mouse to get in though. Great video all together, nice clean insulation job! Probably one of my most hated jobs for sure... i like the idea for the new series, I think it would be a good idea to do the videos on their own...otherwise you may find that the retention value on the videos may drop.

I've been watching the cabin build, but was not subscribed. Enjoying this series - especially now that you are joining Shawn in the fireside chat/advice area. Helping boys to become men in this androgynous society is highly important. My father-in-law took me in hand and taught me what my own dad failed to do. Dad missed the boat because I was a sickly youth with asthma, so he figured that I would not need skills in woodworking, plumbing, auto repair, home maintenance, etc. My father-in-law had no sons, so he jumped at the chance to teach me what I needed to know. I am forever grateful to him for his loving concern. My dad made sure that my younger brother learned all those things, but the kid never put them into practice.
Glad to hear your efforts with the young hockey player were worth the time and trouble - he learned a valuable life lesson! Looking forward to the rest of Season 2. - Stay safe!

I have been enjoying your videos about the cabin for several weeks since it popped up on YT. However, the life lesson you gave the young hockey player is worth more to me than watching you build 10 cabins. Young men need father figures to look up to. They need discipline, structure, and responsibilities. You remind me of one of my scout leaders sharing advice about responsibilities to the family and I have never forgotten the talks. Hugs from Miami.

Your thoughts on team sports were spot one. I was a little league baseball couch for 15 years. I had 11-13 year olds. I required every player to play in rotation, every position and had a tight schedule for that rotation. Every player played every game and sat the bench as equaliy as possible. I had parents sign an acknowledgement agreement that they understood the rules of the league and my plan for player development. Every player became proficient at each positon as a teamplayer. Of course some were better at certain spots, but what we ended up having was a very rounded team, which served to put us at least in the championship finals every season. My teams won more than half of our seasons. There were a few parents who didn't agree and usually their kids got on the bandwagon in spite of that. My #1 goal was to have fun, build team spirit and help the kids develop sportsmanship and a positive attitude that would bolster them for life. I will always be proud of those kids, and my time as a couch.

I think that Community is so important, having small close communities is more important now a days. Most Youth are so disconnected from society in general and over the years I feel that people as a whole have become so disconnected from nature, one another, and even disconnected from who they are and want to become. Your channel and a vary few are on the rise to close that gap for upcoming generations. We as human beings began developing tribes, communities, towns, cities, and it has created separation from one another. So, I hope that by being reminded of where we came from we can slowly go back to our natural roots of coming together and creating communities to help one another. I hope that one day my children will come to realize that lesson and importance of helping your neighbors and community, as humans we are not meant to do thing's on our own, we need support systems in place to survive, to be healthy, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I went a little off on a rant but your story really reminds me of the important lesson of accepting help and guidance from others because living a good life can't be done alone, otherwise you're not living at all.

On the cabin walls. And I know opinions are cheap but, I would have done slats and felt, then siding. Wind leakage would be greatly reduced and you could cut your own slats. And by slats I just mean horizontal lumber with minimal gaps. I will hush now. Good talk Chris. Coaching is one of the best things a man can do for someone else's kids, but dang it be a good coach. And what you described is good coaching.

My son being a teen has a male adult family friend that works great to reenforce the lessons Im trying to teach. Looking good Chris and Kevin hard work always pays off, I’m sure when it’s all completed you guys will throw a party why not. My father was a good man but as a teenager I didn’t always agree which way he was steering me, looking on now lots of things he said to all makes sense. That’s life, Thanks for sharing. 👍👋👌🇬🇧

Nice words you put Coach Beardsman. It's inspiring and I'm glad you have students looking up to you. And for that Kid who wanted to play Center but nothing else, he has a lot to learn about Team effort and try to be a master in all positions.

Loved the words of wisdom at the end. I'm 51 and, growing up without a dad, I had to figure most of this out myself. Sometimes it can take years to figure it all out , and it's good to hear it backed up by another man halfway around the planet. Keep it up, man :)

Great stuff, especially the nitty gritty vulnerable stuff. I feel that the emotional stuff is frequently overlooked. Awesome! I can relate, like many others, I too found guidance beyond my parents. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Truer words, my friend. Truer words.

Thanks for adding the new area . It's a tough but important subject coaching kids is difficult but I found out that doing it for the few years that I did made a huge difference in the lives of a lot of kids . It was baseball instead of hockey . But still a team game every job is important and not every job is right for everyone . But doing any of the jobs well is an asset to the whole team

Just wanted to chime in to share some knowledge I gained this past week. If that stove has an air intake, you could feed it cold air from outside directly with an insulated duct line. Right now its pulling conditioned air from the cabin space which is in turn pulling cold air through the gaps around the windows, etc.

    • @mattsharp8656
      @mattsharp8656 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I was going to mention this as one of my points so I'll just add so fill in the gaps. Cold air expands as it's heated and cause positive air pressure which carries heat as it expands, meaning that heat from your stove will travel to to far reaches of the cabin more readily than if negative pressures exist. Negative pressure occurs when a wood burning appliance needs oxygen in a sealed space and has to draw that air from within the room it'self, the room then replaces that air from gaps and air leaks in the envelope and rushes towards the stove to feed it and brings cold are with it from the outside. With chill is a factor of heat loss, not a change in air temp. Using air pressure to reverse wind chill is an effective way to increase comfort and it removes heat loss. Fresh air is better for the combustion process and it's better for us not to compete for air with a wood burning appliance.

You could put a homemade heat exchanger in the flu. Basically a small barrel or heavy duct sealed at both ends. You put small pipes through the barrel. The air inside the pipes is heated by the heat in the flu. Add a small fan with ductwork between the fans exhaust to the tubes. If on a heat activated switch it will blow warm air around the room. Or you could put a window fan on heat activated switch and it will blow warm air around the room. The fans need to be on low or slow output. Both will work U-verse lived in some cold houses which I usually repaired so they we more heat efficient when I left than when I moved in. I'm 61 btw lots of experience in those years lol

    • @mattsharp8656
      @mattsharp8656 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Heat exchangers are great for moving air naturally through induction because heat rises or you can assist by adding a fan but I'm suggesting isn't necessary as the air will move on it's own. Adding a gassifier within the combustion chamber with a secondary air supply from a dedicated fresh air supply (from outside the cabin) will not only move air but will increase the air pressure which carries heat with it. Clean combustion combined with positive air pressure keeps the heat in the room instead of going up the chimney.

I played hockey when i was a kid from 1987-1992.
I started as a right wing, then ended up as a right defense.
Whatever position he plays best is the right choice.
The Choice negotiated at the end was very fair.

Thank you for this video, Ireally like the direction you are going to take with your content epically at
the end when you said that you really do care , and your mission in life is to
bring everybody up and see people as a whole succeed. I feel you on that big
time. This is the kind of mentality we should have globally as people
coexisting with one another. The divisions between us all needs to vanish, and
constructive words and attitudes are the way to that.
