I have to tell a story. Now I have been an avid watcher since week one and look forward to each episode like a kid from the 70's waiting on Saturday morning cartoons. I get up around 7 on saturdays and watch Wild Homestead on my lap top before waking up the family to get our weekend started.
Last week my wife and I went to visit my mom for the weekend after she had surgery. Last Saturday I woke up and started watching episode 29 on the living room TV and my mom came out about 15 minutes into it and sat down and started watching as well. So I restarted from the beginning and we watched together. She loved it so much we went back to episode 1 and stated watching it. Then when my wife had came out and joined us. They were both so enthralled that we watch episode 2, 3, 4 etc. Because my mom basically could not do anything sit or laydown due to the surgery, we spent all weekend basically watching Wild Homestead. When we left on Sunday afternoon we were up to episode 16. On Wednesday my mom pinged me to tell me she had caught up to episode 29. And my wife caught up to episode 29 on Friday.
This morning my wife and I got up and watched episode 30 together and my mom pinged me and told me she watched it in the morning as well. So thank you James for giving us so much family joy last weekend. FYI I will be ordering "wolfmilk" shirts for them for Christmas this year.

Hey James, just a friendly observation. When you use your chainsaws you tend to have your face directly behind and inline with your chainsaw bar and chain. This is a recipe to get kickback into your face. Just a tip, try and train yourself to keep your head off to the side/left of center of your chainsaw bar. One day when you aren’t expecting it when your saw catches and kicks you’ll be glad you had disciplined yourself to have the bar kick to the side and not in your face. No disrespect. Taking on a big project like this is impressive.

There was a young man from Toronto,
To the wilds of Canada, he'd go.
    With logs and with dreams,
    And Wild Homesteading schemes,
In the heart of the forest, he'd grow.
With Strength and Honor his creed,

Smoke the wasps out. Works the same for bees. Use wood smoke and make sure it hits the nest. Apparently the Queen sees that as a sign of a bush/brush fire zone and will move the nest further away. That way you don't have to use chemicals or kill anything. I literally just set fire to a whole heap of wood in a metal bucket right below the nest. It worked perfectly for me. Obviously you want to keep the fire away from your log cabin so maybe put the bucket with burning wood on the top of your metal ladder just away from the wall a bit. Make sure to chuck some green wood in once the fire is going for that extra smoke.... Good luck... 👌

Being a Bee keeper, we use smoke to calm the bees when we open the hives up. It signals the bees to eat honey to their full, calming them and preparing them for a move out if the hive become threaten by real fire. Now putting a fire pale near a log cabin in the roof space, close enough to be effective, I would not risk it. Way to dangerous and likely lost of the whole cabin. A can of wasp killer from Home Depot for under $10, will do the job nicely. It sprays upto 20 ft away so you have good clearance, but I still would wear protective clothing and face protection when applying.

For wasps or bees: liquid dish soap and water. I worked for years in pest control and that is what we used. It is completely nontoxic so you don’t have to worry if it falls on you. Get a gallon sprayer and make sure it comes out very sudsy. Spray them with that soapy water very generously. You’ll notice they’ll drop dead almost instantly. It’s also better done at dusk or dawn when there is low light. They are less active then. Great channel! Love the videos!

I really like how you've done the anti vermin shield on your floor line. I'm from Australia and this how we do snake 'proof' (read resistant) fences. We dig 30cm, bury the mesh the same way you have done and extend the fence about about 1500mm from (the width of the reel normally). I tend to crack a bag of cement into the trench as well periodically and mix it with the base, similar to what you have done. We have huge rabbit problems in Australia so the point of the fence is not that snakes can dig, rather stopping the rabbits and other things from digging under and the snakes using the hole. By placing cement and mixing (just let it get water from the soil, it isn't structural) the rabbits don't like digging it because it's way harder. The last fence I did, not a single dug through hole as yet as of about 3 years ago. Love your work!

    Hi James,
I’m only 14 but love watching your videos I’m from the uk and lots of people here use petrol to get rid of wasps seems to do the trick if you want something more natural Soap and water
Spray small hanging nests with soap and water to suffocate the wasps. The soap clogs their breathing pores, killing them almost immediately or Vinegar works best when mixed with water, but you can also use it on its own. Simply spray it onto any exposed nest and wait for the wasps to fall out. You can also use this method to get rid of bees if they've built a hive on your property. Use the same ratio as above (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water), keep doing what you’re doing loving the vids hope this helps.

    But alas, I must wait.
Thank you for letting us live vicariously through you. I feel as if I have a very little sliver of ownership over this little cabin. I go to sleep and dream about it, I wake up and dream about it.

For the WASP - we use this on our farm with much success. It works on all bugs, flying insects, and poison ivy/oak/sumac. 1 gallon apple cider vinegar, 1 pound of all purpose salt, 1 38oz bottle of “BLUE” Dawn dish soap. Mix this all together and put in a spray bottle. Your wasp will be gone within hours. We keep this on hand and it works like a charm!

Master James! Happy to join you for another exciting episode at the homestead. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but a simple method I have found that works with installing this kind of metal mesh is to put a washer on the screw before attaching the mesh. This way it will disperse the pressure and prevent the screw from shearing the mesh. Just a thought! Man can't wait to see the windows installed! That is going to be awesome! Getting closer to move-in-ready! Ooga Booga!! 👍👍👍

So an easy trick I used on my own homestead property. I took a 5 gallon bucket, filled it up with water and dish soap about 1-2 inches from the top. Then I took a 2x4 that will lay atop the bucket and on the underside of the 2x4 I screwed two hotdogs. The wasps are attracted to the scent of meat and will eat the hotdog and when they release from the hotdog they drop a little before flying off, thats when they fall into the soapy water and die instantly. Good luck!

That's a fisher, I trap them. Pine martens dont grow to 15 or 20 pounds lol, they are like a big squirrel in size. Neither the fisher or pine marten are really dangerous to humans - but they are to rabbits and small rodents, keep them around for rodent control. Weasels/ermine, Mink are other mustelids that are good to have around for mouse control. All of those don't bother me...but racoons do, you'll want to get rid of them all and the porcupines.

Good morning James! I’m loving that oakum. The cabin is really coming together. So glad you added that mesh. You’ll appreciate it to keep mice or Fishers from nesting later once the cooler weather sets in. Once you have your dog, he will alert you for any critters near the cabin. They use dogs on the North slope to warn of polar bears. Until next week.
