    Always impressed with the historical context shared at the outset to set the table. This really sets your channel apart. No one else is educating on this level and with the style discussion and thoughtful editing to boot, Urban Gentry owns this space. Big thumbs up!

    Love the Purple Rain shirt TGV! I also really, really love the idea of heritage brands teaming up with microbrands. Hoping we see more old brands that might have lost their way over the years team up with microbrands in the future.

    Having done most of my career in aerospace I have been drawn to the Bréguet type XX as my grail. I’m not there yet, and this Hemel certainly complicates matters.
    On the 3-minute dividers on the sub dial in big eye chronos, I have heard 2 credible reasons:
    1) easier to read than subs of 5 (either on, after or before the marking)
    2) fits with timing things for 6 minutes to calculate hourly rates (like a slow burn tachymètre)
    I love the Channel TGV, I started following years ago and really bonded with your appreciation of history, design language and technicality of the moment.
    Edit: spelling

    Your intro's are always pure class but this one had so much going on that it was totally captivating. Probably need to watch it several times to bask in the nostalgia of 1950s & 1960s flight. Tye 20's are great. I actually have a Hemel Airfoil. It's not a Type 20 as such but definitely military aviation inspired (it has a Broad Arrow). I would love to see a Type 20 with a date at 6 - the symmetry would be perfection! Superb video as always.

    TGV, your videos are like a calming cup of camomile tea. I can get to work full of stress and anxiety, but I put this on in the background and watch it as I work and I can literally feel my body temperature regulating from the smoothness of the transitions of shots and that anxious part of my brain gets occupied by keeping up with the history lessons you tell. I’d recommend these videos to anyone with severe adult ADHD like myself, whether they’re into watches or not.

    Such a great video, with absolute clarity and honesty, as ever. Especially, your assessment of Mathey-Tissot as a modern brand. This particular watch is saved by the reputation of Hemel. There are issues, all of which you identified but the cost cannot be ignored and, in particular, the value proposition it offers.

    Funky! Wild that the 30 min subdial has 5 big hashmarks (so 6 mins each) with the smaller marks being 2 mins. The vintage ones shown also seem to mark-out 3, 6, and 9 mins with long lines in the subdial. Wasn't there something about 3min phone calls back in the day? Oddly the quartz has 6 big marks, so a more standard 5 mins each. Last thing -- wearing my Dan Henry 1945 today; the Hemel is way more legible, but I like my 12 clicks on the bezel! Great show, TGV. 👍

    Hi TGV, great video as always. I appreciate all the insight you provide on chronograph watches, it is very helpful as I am looking at adding a chronograph to my collection when the right one comes along.
    I got my Sand Shark in the mail a few days ago ahead of originally scheduled(shoutout Mark and the Long Island Watch crew). It is even more gorgeous in person, and I haven’t taken it off since I got it. As you said in your video the legibility is immaculate from any angle. I love the type 20 and even own a vintage Airain type 21. Part of the soul of these pieces is the flyback movement. For me, that character gets lost in many reissues that don’t offer this feature. Admittedly, it’s more expensive, but it’s the one thing that elevates one reissue over another. Too bad this variant didn’t go the flyback route seen in the reissued Airain type 20’s and Hanhart 417 ES’s. In every other way, this MT by Hemel absolutely nails it.

  • @tedstriker5991
    @tedstriker5991 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    10:58 I think you mean groups of 6 minutes. Each small tick mark at 2 minutes. The one thing that comes to mind is, in aviation, a standard rate turn is 3 degrees per second, or 2 minutes for a 360 degree turn. Timing can be critical when holding and not using GPS or similar. Why it is a total of 30 minutes I can only guess as well. Maybe something to do with fuel reserves. For basic part 91 FAA rules (daytime), an airplane must have enough fuel to fly to the destination and another 30 minutes.

  • @johnpaulryan738
    @johnpaulryan738 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi TGV , great submission as usual.
    Getting back to the purpose of the big eye; I seem to remember hearing of a 15 minute register on some of the Breitling cronos ? being used as a 15 minute count up to get a fighter in the air after scrambling whereas a 30 minute count up might be useful for 45 degree turns during flight navigation? I would love to hear any other comments on this topic. Interestingly enough there has always been a mystery as to the origin of the Longines big eye, surely it's point of origin and time frame has to be similar to the type twenty concept?

    I’m not sure this watch really competes with the likes of Longines or Omega, but as an alternative to Hanhart or Nivada Grenchen, and indeed Airain who are also still producing the Type XX, which you mentioned in the video, you can see the market they are aiming for and at similar price points. The choice then is on the particular style or design that appeals the most and whether the fly-back feature is of significance or just the desire for a mechanical chrono.

    Fantastic intro TGV. Always enjoy your high production values. I love this watch though having bought 3 chronographs in 2022, I will hold fire. As you say 100m would be better, only one of mine has 100m and a screw down crown, but who will swim with a chronograph? Not me for sure. I don't mind the ghost position so much. I would have always preferred an automatic in the past, but with changing watches so often and not being fond of watch winders it doesn't really matter to me now. As for the strap, I always go to my local craftsman here in Turkey for almost every watch I buy. I usually send him a photo of my watch and he makes 2 or 3 good recommendations to me. Thanks for showing us this one.

    Great video! The thirty minute register is split in to 6 minutes not 5, with the big markers every six minutes and the small markers every two minutes. So the big markers are at zero then 6,12,18,24 and 30 the same as zero obviously. So if the hand lands on a space with no marker you know it’s an odd number.

    Great show my friend! It’s a shame that Hemel had to bring out the good in Mather Tissot who are a complete shell of their former self and need to take a look of the likes of Rotary and Accurist who have rebranded back to the 50’s logo and watch styling! This brand needs to focus on what made them a name and not making a buck cloning other brands! With this collab it may start something great?!

    Thank you so much TGV for such a great video review! Very interesting historical watch! Stay healthy and well as always! (Nick L)🦖🦖🦖❤❤❤⏱️⏱️⏱️ Also, in some of your other videos, I noticed that you have an interesting sword. Could you please describe it in another video?! Thanks!

    I’d love to see your opinion on some Tutima watches. I am interested in their 417-alike Flieger Chrono, partly because I love Cathedral Hands and the whole coin-edge-bezel-chrono aesthetic.

    Liking the hair cut, you don't look like a bond villain anymore 😛, very tempted by this watch, looks lovely on the olive green strap.

    Mathey Tissot flys under the radar, but great pieces(love the 1970 driver chronos). Some pieces are meh, but their original autos are good. I considered the Hemel colab. It's really good. Hard to get. MT makes a version with a eta7750 movement. Good, but not as cool as the colab. It'll come. I'm watching. BTW, nice shirt , TGV. I have one too. Shall we look ridiculous sporting Purple Rain with a smile. In a good way👍
