    Was going to buy a preowned 2016 Cayman black edition until I test drove the 718 and I am so glad I did. The flat six sounds amazing but honestly I was shocked when I started up the 718 It sounded just as loud and throaty. Personally prefer having a faster car over the sound difference of two cylinders.Nobody else knows the difference when you're driving, unless you're driving next to a Porsche enthusiast that his his windows down next to you while on the highway lol.I have been told countless times how amazing the 718 sounds. The 718 is truly unbelievable, the styling and technology blows away the older models. Mines white with black high gloss 20in Carrera wheels. Love the content Roger keep It up!!!

      you are right, around track at higher RPM it screams almost as loud as the flat-6 ! You NEED to go for the sport exhaust too :)

      Corey D'Angelo Funny how that works, isn't it? We did the same thing. Were locked-in on finding a '14-16 981-S with manual, until a salesman suggested to my wife that she and I take a used 718 he had for a spin. Just the two of us, no pressure. All it took was one stomp on the throttle, and "Oh my God, we're getting one of these (expletive) cars!" came bursting from my wife's lips. Once I pried it from her fingers and had a spin of my own, I could not believe how much better they had made the chassis. 981 search abandoned, 718 6-spd GT Silver search on! I smile every time I see it in the garage.

    I love mine - metallic sapphire blue with PDK. “Only” the 2.0 with no other options (really - none) but an exceptional car. The standard stereo is great, the standard seats are great...just love it. Fast when you want it to be, sedate when you want it to be - even averages over 37 mpg if you are gentle.....can’t believe how lucky I am to drive such a beautiful well engineered car....thank you for the video.

    I have just traded my 981 Cayman S for a 718 GTS 2.5L. The 981 was a great car, but the 718 is a definite upgrade for a driving enthusiast. It may have lost the flat six sound, but the 2.5 sounds good in isolation, especially at high revs. The handling is more alert, more nimble, performance is stronger across the rev range and the infotainment brings the car ups to date with Apple Car Play. A very under rated car in my opinion. Thank you Roger for a more objective review!

    Hi Roger I enjoyed this video especially since I own a 718 Cayman
    One thing I’d like you to double check is your note about getting PASM for the most comfortable ride
    From what my dealer has told me PASM lowers the ride so no PASM would be more comfortable than PASM in comfort mode

    • @RogerBaileyOnCars
      @RogerBaileyOnCars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ali Alh i'd go with what your dealer says, my own opinion is subjective, smaller diameter wheels will improve ride comfort of course. 👍

    Every generation of Cayman/Boxster has impressed me and so I’m developing a collection and appreciating the evolution. I choose the Boxster starting with the 986 and now the 718 GTS. It’s the in between that is lacking in my garage. Perhaps that’s where I’ll add a Cayman in the future? More likely wait and see what’s up around the next corner perhaps a GT4 or Spyder.
    Another great video on this channel. Both the 718 and the reviewer aka Roger are under the radar it seems. Great work.

    Hi Roger-great videos showing your expertise! Just would like to ask your opinion. Later in the new year I'll be looking for a Porsche. Might sound a strange combination of choices but it will either be a Cayman 981 GTS or 718 GTS or a 993. Previously had a 993 Targa. Won't be a daily driver in fact wouldn't be used in winter at all. Like the modern stuff but apprehensive about leaving a modern car for months without use in fact worry about the long term viability of modern cars, but the looks are fantastic. I'd appreciate your input if possible please.

    • @RogerBaileyOnCars
      @RogerBaileyOnCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I first fell in love with BMW 325 in 1983 while station at Fort Bragg, my LT bought one and I was hooked. I have never own a BMW, but it was always a dream car. As I research new cars of today and their reliability I faded from BMW and fell in love with Porsche, they're racing history speaks for itself. But! I am not buying a race car, I am looking for reliability over everything. And yes! LOOKS are very important, the more I research Porsche the more I like them. The first time I saw Carrera was in the 70,s or 80,s and that car stuck in my mind all these years later, just like the 1983 BMW 325. So, for a new car it will be a Porsche, and a 83 BMW 325 if I can find one.

    Great video and your local too which is great. I recently got the 2.5 718 GTS and it is absolutely awesome. Forget the snobbery around the 718 being only a flat four. Having had the flat six before i can honestly say this engine is amazing maybe not as sonerous perhaps but a far superior machine in my view being more driveable with almost instananeous torque delivery.

      Caymans are all brilliant things, the 987 from 2004 to 2012 was great but could have some expensive engine reliability issues so check history very carefully, the 981 from 2013 to 2015 was pretty bullet proof.

    I’m torn between the 718 and 981 I think the 981 will keep its value as it is probably the last 6 cylinder cayman but at the same time the 718 looks good and has more power. Any thoughts?

    • @RogerBaileyOnCars
      @RogerBaileyOnCars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Levi G if residual value is a high priority the 981 will be a safer place and it has a better exhaust sound, 718 sounds almost as good from inside the car if not outside. Best go and drive them both if you can.

      @@RogerBaileyOnCars It really is a fantastic little sportscar and of course different to the post-2000 Porsche. They're now at the age where a really well-treated one is getting a little expensive and thousands of them are being cannibalized annually - all necessary for a general price rise. They're not about to pop like 928 prices perhaps but the prices on a Very Good 944 are moving noticeably now, from two thousand pounds to four or five for example. Cheers from Montréal, thanks for another great Porsche video.

      Someone said I sound like a kid in a sweet shop which is probably not wrong, I'm glad to hear you''ll still watch. Vids take about 4 hours to film and a whole evening to edit - keeps me quiet, thanks for looking in again - best wishes - Roger

    At the moment we replace with the U.S License Plate, it ruins the look immediately. U.S License Plate does not look good in any super/sports cars including our own made [sigh]

    Think What you might not know....is a bit misleading for the title of this piece.
    Agree the Cayman is brilliant, bought a new one in 2015.
    I have driven this new model, out of interest, and yes it is a bit more squirty and pointy than the 981, BUT the sound from the new engine is just plain unpleasant unless you have never owned a 6 cylinder Porsche and therefore don’t know what you are missing.
    Of course fuel consumption and emissions reduction are driving all new car design, and Porsche cannot be an exception, but I’ll certainly be keeping my 981 with its beautiful sounding flat 6

      Sounds like you have a great Cayman, good to hear your comments

    For purists the legendary flat-four engines remain part of the brand's honorable lineage.

    Beauty lacks the muscle. Sports car. Low hp a mb A43 has more muscle half the price.

      Wow - you really don’t understand! You clearly have never driven a Boxster and are too stupid to understand that handling and balance are just as important as a great engine. If you just want go get a 700bhp muscle car that might go quicker in a straight line but can’t corner. If you want the best handling and balanced sports car in the world get a Boxster.

    Too bad that it sounds like a bag of shit. Perhaps in the next iteration they'll fix that too.

    Stop telling fibs - The car sound is awful (from the inside) where it counts.. It's just a drone and on idle feels like a sledge hammer..

      Agree 100% Magic but I think sounds just too ordinary from the outside too.

    Hate the engine sound compared with previous Gen Car, I have just had a Lotus Evora S for three days, it’s rarer, faster, better handling, and more comfortable with a better ride than the Porsche, and what a great engine note, I advise any potential Cayman/911 owner to try the Lotus

      Sadly jay had many problems with his Evora

    Improve? Then they have to bring back the 6 cylinders, cause this 718s engine note is rubbish

      Have to agree 100% with you and sixpotshot. No way can any 4 cylinder engine match the sweet symphony of a flat six. A huge part of the 987 and 981 `s appeal is the exhaust note, so no way would I ever buy a 781 for that reason alone, however great the car is in all other areas.

    I’ve got one and can say it’s build quality is worse than a jaguar.......and that takes some going. It sounds bloody awful and Porsche service is terrible.

    I'm sorry but there was nothing new in your vid. It is not the first time Porsche does 4 pots engines for sure but in the process all they have achieved this time around was to make a superb machine common and knock it from its previous 5 star pedestal. Gross
