Agreed; wish there were more vids like his - objective, balanced and honest (and well edited). Unlike so much of the obsequious, sycophantic stuff out there which doesn't offer the slightest criticism of any cars they review (yes you, Shmee, Seen Through Glass, Mr JWW etc. etc. ... ).

Agreed. Actual speed isn’t that important, especially on public roads.
It is why “under-powered” cars are often more fun to drive - you can actually work the machine and more thoroughly exploit its potential.

@@TheGetawayer Good to see you back Guido.
Your review matches my sentiments. I test drove the 718 around town and highway but couldn't wait to return the keys as I found the driving experience underwhelming. Bought a low mileage 981 Cayman S PDK, remapped the ecu to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec. Hair-trigger throttle response, pulling strongly from 3000rpm to redline with that legendary flat 6 NA engine wail.... all with stock air filters and exhaust manifolds. I laugh during and after every drive, it's so enthralling, which is the reason I bought a Porsche sports car. The 718 is not one of Porsche's better efforts.

As so many have already said, Great to see you here again, Guido. I look forward to driving the new 4 cylinder turbo configuration. I have the Cayman 987.2 flat 6 with the PDK (previously had the Boxster manual) and I've had a blast with it since the day I bought it. I am especially surprised to hear that the PDK was searching around for the right gear on occasion. And who am I to believe if not The Getawayer, and I mean that in all sincerity. You're the Porsche guy I've listened to for a long time and I hope this is a sign of things to come. Welcome back! You were sorely missed.

How can we keep on comparing 6-flat to new 4-flat engines? Just look at the positive movement to a smaller footprint (yeah it hurts me too) but then for me personally the new 4-flat boxer is absolutely TOP level engineering and design from Porsche. Great performance and - surprisingly - great and adorable sound.
Note: You are the first one that is negative about the PDK. Interesting aldo.

Good to see another review from you Guido. It ashamed, the Cayman now sounds like a Subaru. I love Porches, but wonder where they will end up in this new small displacement turbo era. The sound the GT3 makes is what a Porsche should sound, and rev like! See you next time.

Just like everything in life, the sound is relative to what you have experienced before or comparing to. I test drove the base Cayman and thought the sound was great. At least not a deal breaker. Too many purists are hating on it for what it is not rather than praising it for what it is. For me it's still one of if not the best entry level sports car. And who can argue with a 4 second 0-100kph car? That would be fun with ear plugs in! If you are new to Porsche or sports cars, test drive it and decide for yourself. I know what a screeming 6 sounds like...amazing... But the new Cayman is still a fantastic car for what it is. Don't be put off by all the haters.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

As you stated yourself: It depends on what you have experienced. And if you had driven a 981 GTS or GT4 you would not call me a hater. Not that I let anybody call me that anyway, unless you are new to my channel

Welcome back Guido. I do however totally disagree with your view on the 718. Its an epic car, better that the 981 (not sound I agree) but in every other way its better. I've never owned a naturally aspirated Porsche so this might be why but my new 718 Cayman GTS is brilliant, I like the sound but its not NA but I really don't care. Its so rewarding for me to drive. Everyone is entitled to their view and I respect your but I just don't agree. Keep up the great vids.

Radu Aleman Hi Radu, I am very pleased with the GT4. I don’t find that there is a lack of power.... If anything it is more usable than more powerful cars on the roads, I live in the U.K. Mine has the lightweight bucket seats which I find to be excellent., but I would suggest that you try them before buying. I don’t use the GT4 as a daily driver..... The 981 Spyder does looks superb..... Hope this is helpful information. Kind regards.

You are the ultimate authority on P cars imho. I agree the GT cars are the only new P cars that get me excited to drive. The turbo charged engines are not fun unless you are going at highly illegal speeds where as the NA cars can be enjoyed through out the rev range due to the build up of torque and the satisfying musical pitch change of the exhaust..

What are your thoughts on a manual transmission 718? Does that help to give back some of the driver/car connection and maybe also add more ability to exploit the powerband and lift throttle hiss sounds from the turbo?
I had a GT4 and liked the engine sound , but I now have a 991.2 GT3 with a center exhaust bypass and I am love with this engine and its sound.

    • @TheGetawayer

I was able to drive this exact same configuration on an autocross circuit at LimeRock race park in connecticut. I experienced the exact same issue with the pdk. It was especially bad when getting on the gas coming out of a hard corner. The combination or the turbo 4 spooling up + the transmission hunting caused a very jerky response. On the other hand, the 981 we drove at the same event was extremely linear and predictable

I *bought a 718S* with all performance options. And *ended up changing to a 981* Cayman GTS. The 718 is faster pick up for sure, but it's just not inviting. It doesn't motivate me or provide me a reason to enjoy it. The sound in 981 GTS is phenomenal, as good as the GT3 (then again I'm comparing it to a 3.8 GT3, NOT the 4.0 GT3) . Super in your face, very nice and loud cabin noise (I feel louder than the GT4, maybe for easier air flow), and way better than digital and isolative cars like the R8 v10 plus (not the cabriolet, the cab sounds great). The 718 obviously sounds good for a 4 banger but still the pitch progression is very minimal in contrast (and only in contrast). It feels less intense despite going faster.

Excellent points in your review. I test drove the 718 S, although it's faster I did not get the same excitement compared to my 2015 981 Cayman S. It looks like the 718 GT4 will carry a detuned GT3 V6. This will certainly be good news however availability will be scarce because of high demand and prize. I certainly will not be able to afford it immediately. :)

Totally agree with you Guido - but I think Porsche's engineers didn't understand that cylinder deactivation can get you to pass the emission tests and the end user can always legally defeat it......let's hope Porsche makes a new Carrera GT with a flat 4.56 liter 8 some day that is built on a stretched "983" - Andreas P are you listening ? Have it be priced the same as a GT3 and see what your enthusiasts will choose ?

@@TheGetawayer hey Guido yeah I test drove the 992.1 Carrera s just before lockdown and I must admit I prefer my n/a 991.1 manual Carrera S I look forward to testing the new GT3 when it's out but it's hard for me to let go of my 991.1 I am thinking of improving shocks and exhaust to improve it slow slightly but I can't justify the new 992. Your thoughts? I agree with your assessment 100%

Here's a question for you, Guido: do you think a hybrid powertrain, specifically torque filling that turbo lag, would improve the car, or would the added weight and complexity ruin the knife's edge balance? I appreciate what electrification offers in terms of performance and efficiency, but the hit to driving dynamics from batteries is still a lot to take.
Just kind of wondering how the Mission E technology might spread across the lineup.

Great to see you again Guido, I think TH-cam automatically 'unsubscribed' my account from your channel :/ I know you aren't liking these turbocharged engines in 718 Cayman/Boxster +911 carreras but I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on the Carrera T. Using the base Carrera's 370hp engine, its probably the closest 'naturally-aspirated feeling' engine in the carrera range. With less sound insulation, tighter gear ratios and shorter gear lever, i'm curious to know your overall impressions on the Carrera T (if you can find a generous owner/porsche dealer!). Thank you for putting the english subtitles for your 991.2 GT3 video on the AutoBild channel!

  • @Tracertme

Guido, an excellent review and you put your argument very well indeed. excellent video content to match. The modern day turbos do provide more torque and this is better for a road car, but in addition we have lost the analogue feel of driving the cars are becoming to digital, its not just Porsche, although they could end up the biggest loser. These turbo cars need to do something closer to what Ferrari are focusing on, high revs, and restricted torque to make it feel more natural... until high RPM. But the ongoing issue will always be the synthetic sound, deadness in throttle feel and just general electronic interference. They need to build all these features so they can meet government EU directive, but have the ability to just switch the whole lot off. I am losing interest in modern cars, once autonomous cars arrive, I will just drive the old stuff, or not bother to buy a car at all, and the bureocrats will kill off the car industry altogether, and I know my numbers are growing... its great shame for young drivers...the best cars are almost behind us.

Was Porsche loosing too many customers walking into a showroom to look at a 6-pot Carrera and walking out with a 6-pot Cayman GTS and Euro 40K saving in their back pocket ? Probably.
My view is that if you're going to turbo an engine then you must reduce its displacement. Is a 3.0 litre V12 quicker to rev out than a 6.0 litre V12 ? I do believe so: mass = weight. The 718 needs just the 2-litre 4-pot.... and a 2002 "Gott in Himmel" Turbo whack :-)..... The chassis can take it.
And another thing: can we get back to allowing engines to sound 'natural'. I'm getting fed up with 'sports exhausts' being tuned by young chaps with a PhD in Acoustics in anechoic chambers, attempting to fool us that a 'Hot-vee' 8 turbo sounds as good as a 6.2 litre AMG V8. It doesn't.
Moral: buy a 718 manual, no PSE. It's still a BOXER 4-pot....and there's huge Porsche/VW tradition in that. And be happy.

I've tested 991.2 and I really don't understand why everybody is complaining about the engine character , thing it's a great turbo engine, very linear, nice sound and suits the 911 like the previous NA engines did, yes the sound of the NA engine was a bit better , but nothing serious to worry about (especially 991.2 Carrera T Manual looks a great car)...I don't know what to say about the 718, will drive these models after 2 weeks, but according the videos from youtube they will be disappointment from the sound point of view, otherwise will see..

I drove the 718 GTS for a couple of laps at a track. Great performance , handling, brakes, etc.... everything is perfectly balanced. The engine sound is not bad, it's just different, but I still prefer the NA flat 6...981 is the last classic Porsche Cayman not only for me.....991.2 is acceptable , but 718 is a bit of a compromise....

Sorry for the bad joke. A perfect assessment of a car that was, and might be, the great Porsche as it should be. A complete all encompassing car that combines the best of gt driving with the "I've made a mess in my pants " sports car experience. They have taken away a considerable amount of sensuality away from the look as well. This seems to be endemic throughout the industry however...what say you to that? All badges are taking the beauty and edge off of their entry level offerings it seems. To what end? To make the more profitable upper echelon offerings seem more aesthetically pleasing? Leave some scraps for the entry level enthusiast who lives to drive!!!

Thanks Guido for this insightful and honest review. I found your 991.2 gts review very interesting also. The old NA 3.4 and 3.8 really sounded and performed like “race car” exotic motors when paired with the sport exhaust. While the 991.2 F6 motor seems much better than the 718, it appears that both have been watered down and mainstreamed vs their predecessors. Really does raise the question of whether the GT line is the only attractive option left for true “purists” like me. But they hardly make any GT cars and they are crazy expensive!! So that’s pretty disappointing for the Porsche enthusiasts. At the end of the day this all feels very geared to marketing (more power and quicker 0-60 times) and sales growth rather than delivering a pure, uncompromising and aesthetic experience.
