    I recently picked up a 2018 base 718 Cayman. I will happily admit that I was wrong to dismiss these cars without giving them a proper test drive first. They are truly fantastic sports cars and much more friendly to daily because of how usable the powerband is. The 718 is fun ALL of the time while my old 987 was only at its best some of the time. I am a flat 4 convert and I love my 718 Cayman!

    Drove a 718 Boxster S around the Porsche experience centre for an hour last year and the engine droned. Took one out last week on the road and was blown away at how good the thing was and now want a 718 Cayman. The engine is ideal for road use where you use full throttle only 10% of the time

    i think it will be an individual decsion for each driver. Drive it for yourself, i think pragmatic drivers who want every day performance will choose this car, the cayman is now absurdly fast , that was the biggest knock in past but these days a 718S will be as quick as the exotic cayman GT4... i feel that most haters probably aren't in any position to purchase one anyway and of course there are tons of 987/986 and 981 under powered cayman/boxsters for those guys that this car will smoke pretty easily. instead of crying about the engine celebrate the fact that you can get a PORSCHE for 60K that does a sub 4.5 0-60 and can hang with vettes and high end mustangs...used to be to match a vette in performance you would have to pay a 40-150K premium in a porsche now that has changed signficantly..

      Vikas it's like they say having power is one thing putting it down is another. My nephew has an A35s AMG, it's fast in a straight line, put it on a twisty road a 987 Boxster is faster. Handling is kinetic energy, engine is potential energy. I'm taking him to his first track day at Brands Hatch in June he will understand. 987 is not slow it can deliver it's full potential energy. A35s, A45, Audi TTRS, F Type, RS3, M140i these cars have power in the engine but can't put it down like Boxster/Cayman...

    A 4-cylinder Porsche? I suppose no none ever remembers the 914, 912, 944, 968, or 356....It's not like they decided to make a front wheel drive car with an Inline 5 cylinder engine. They've done This stuff before and frankly it's a better car than the 981. The noise is nowhere near as awesome as the flat-six was, but that alone doesn't disqualify an entire car! It's like saying "The new Audi RS6's V8 doesn't sound as nice as the old V10, therefore it must be a crappy car. You may sacrifice noise, but you gain power that's more usable, and a better chassis, steering rack, and overall better car.

    This is the most sensible review I have see/read on the subject. Most people have jumped on the bandwagon criticising the new Cayman 718S for it's lack of two cylinders. I would guess hardly, if any of them have actually driven one. I was in the market for a second hand Caiman GTS and was sure this was the car for me. Until I did a back to back test drive in the GTS and 718S. And what did I do? Ordered a brand new 718S for around the same price as a second hand GTS (really not my intention). Dan's comments are spot on about the better torque at low revs etc. When you put your foot down in the GTS PDK low in the rev band the car changes down a gear causing a delay in the acceleration and response, no such problem with 718S it is much quicker to respond without having change down a gear. There are many other improvements the 718 has over the GTS. I am not an expert, but I can tell if one car drives better than another and I made a qualified decision. A sports car is much more that the exhaust note. Please stop harping on about the lack of two cylinders the 718 is a better car....

    More Cayman. More of the time. Exactly. Having a great sounding engine that you only really enjoy in one or two gears for three seconds is super frustrating. I love my four cylinder Cayman.

  • @alrobertson

    I drove the old and new back to back. Judge for yourself. The 718 won as an overall package for me. Still, ended up going for a 911.2, but that was more due to the 911 factor than the actual drive. The 718 is a great car.

  • @maestrovso

    Thanks for the great video on a fair overall assessments on the 718 S. There are so many refinements on the rest of the car other than the new turbo 4 that most Porsche fans fixate on. After doing a lot of research my choices are narrowing down to the new 718 S, or a lightly used, or new (if I am lucky) GT4. 718 S comes very close to the performance of the GT4 on track. And for a modestly optioned 718 S is about $23,000 cheaper than the cheapest pre-owned GT4 on the market.

  • @paulknight5442

    I love people that comment on cars from listening to them through computer speakers and following "purist" comments.
    The new cars are awesome. Performance wise, they knock the socks off the 981 cars. Even at sensible (ish) speeds, you can tell the difference between the S and non S cars and they are both much more useable than the outgoing models. Having test driven both 718s (albeit Boxsters) as the Cayman is not available for customer demos, they also sound great in the flesh. Even without the sports exhaust they pop and crackle on the overrun which just makes you giggle like a schoolboy which is the whole point of these cars. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a 991 GT3 RS, but they are out of reach for 95% of consumers due to price and exclusivity.
    Anyway - 718 Cayman S order placed with PDK and sports exhaust. Try one - you might like it........ Roll on October for delivery........hopefully!!

  • @DCGULL01
    @DCGULL01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very well done & said. That finally represents the absolute truth of the new car- More Cayman, more of the time. On paper, it's lighter, smaller & better placed for mid engine feel, more power under the curve compared to the former 6, bladdy, bladdy... But, at the end of the day- you are driving a FAR BETTER Car than before. Less compromises for better all the time. Yes, the sound is gone, but, it's replaced with a better technical car, one that does more, and, more often, more easily... I bet side by side- the differences are more than a little noticeable- I bet they are yards apart. Sunday AM's will be even more gratifying I sense... Thank you for saying the unspeakable. Oh, and, yes- at $50k pounds- it's a good deal, at $70k- not as much. It's not rare, it's not unusual, it's not unobtainium- it's a Cayman S, and 50-55k is plenty for the privilege.

Many of the worlds greatest cars of all time have 4 Cylinder or would you complain about the engine from a Porsche 356, 904 GT, 919 Hybrid, Imprezza STI and of course the by far most powerful F1 cars like the BMW M12 with 1400HP.

    You really need to hear the 718 S and GTS in the flesh. Personally I love the beat of the 4-cylinder. It kind of sounds more mechanical and reminds me of the older air cooled cars. The revving sounds good and the engine makes great sounds on the top end, with all the pops and crackles on the overruns.
    The PORSCHE purists will always complain that’s it’s not as good as the old car. They cried when the 911 went from air cooled to liquid cooled. Then they complained again when the 991.2 went from naturally aspirated to turbos. It’s time to get over it. PORSCHE is an innovative auto maker and this is progress. Go out and drive the new 718 S. It’s what the 911 was 10 years ago. A smaller and lighter weight sports car with a wonderful mid-engine chassis. The new 911 has become a larger GT and while it’s still an amazing car, it’s not the sports car it was years ago.
    Kudos for an excellent and well balanced review.

    The previous Cayman S 981 with the PDK and paddle shifters you can drop into a lower gear fast and seamlessly making overtaking other cars a breeze plus the flat 6 sings it's beautiful song. The old Cayman was less power but this is a case of less is more. Add PASM with 19"wheels and it feels perfect. IMHO.

    Balanced review, thanks. I'm still on the fence because in my 10 year old Cayman S, I do exactly what you said...I get up early to just drive it. With the windows down. Emissions marketing crap aside, this car should be treated as a modern Porsche sports car and judged accordingly. It will sell to new owners, but Porsche's hardest task will be getting existing Cayman drivers out of their cars and into this.

    All of you--the 718 Cayman S PDK is a true supercar, and it easily challenges the 911 carrera. This new car has phenomenal acceleration from 0-60 mph, which was documented in Car & Driver's instrumentation testing at 3.6 seconds. The car tops off at 178 mph. Handling? Unbelievable and true to the reputation of the Cayman. Sound? Love it--deeply growls at lower rpm and whales as you climb in rpm to redline. Purists--get over it. The world is going turbo, and this new 718 S Turbo is true Porsche through and through. Rank: Car & Driver have made the new 718 Cayman S number one on their list of 12 competitors. The 718 S Boxster is number two, the Corvette three, Audi TT RS four, Lotus Evora 400 five, the Jaguar F-type six, etc. Price? Around six digits in US currency with state tax at around 6%. Value? Exceptional--buy it is you can find the bucks/pounds.

    I don't see the issue in the old engine's lack of low-end torque, really. If you need maximum performance, you just downshift into second or third gear, floor it and off you go. In PDK cars this is a non issue entirely, you literally just have to put your foot down and you'll get the most out of it.

Because base Porsche Cayman ride was too stiff for me, no targa top (I didn't want the convertible's expense and replacement in a few years), not as much acceleration for the same $55k price, too low ground clearance for everyday use on public roads and shopping centers. That being the case then emotions become the real difference maker in what to buy. Few owners take it to the track most don't so the flat 6 is the biggest selling point. This would have been a concession to co2 and turbocharging that most would more readily accept ... alas ...

Come back to reality folks, and realize that the new Cayman is better than ever!

    The cayman was getting too close to the 911. They had to do something to screw it up.

    Sad! The engine and exhaust sound is horrible compared to the flat six models. Ruined the perfect car!

    What a stirring endorsement. "Give it a chance...". I drove both an auto s and a manual gts 2.5. Nice cars and fast. $90k worth? Not even close id rather buy a $30k S2000 than one of these.

    spec it out to 70K and it's your own damn fault. Almost all of what makes the car great is in there, stock; exercise a little discipline when it comes to the options list and give it enough thought; you'll come away with a great car at a price that's a lot more palatable.

    Flat six ftw! You gotta be brainless to spend more than 60k $ on a 4 cylinder car.

    They made the car worse looking in and out , and sound awful... In real life, a normal driver wont even access the increase in performance. 981 gen all the way.

      I fully agree. And the supposed decrease in fuel consumption just is not there based on the road tests so it makes the new engine even a bigger letdown.

    • @d0718
      @d0718 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be honest, the turbos in fact make the performance more accessible. Whether it's a good thing or not is another argument..

    • @erkkipihalerssi7686
      @erkkipihalerssi7686 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do understand that. I just wonder how much more accessible performance one has to have if we are talking about a lightweight sportscar. Over 3 litre NA engine sounds plenty to me. If not, Cayman/Boxster is not a car for you.

    The old flat six is a beautiful woman who’s awesome in bed, has a great personality, and cooks well, but she’s not quite a supermodel , vs the 718 who’s a super model who’s not that great in bed, is boring and can’t cook at all. Yes she’s wonderful to look at but you wouldn’t put a ring on her.

      Jim C About the worst analogy ever Jim. So you claim the flat six Cayman has one flaw (not a supermodel), and the 718 has three flaws (not great in bed, boring and can’t cook) when in actuality the 718 is only deficient in sound and better in all other areas (acceleration, braking, track times, technology & appearance.... although the last item is subjective). Randy Probst who knows more about performance cars than you or I will ever know says something quite different about the 718. "Marry the 718" th-cam.com/video/oYRWMhCly9w/w-d-xo.html

    This video would have been much better in 1080p and with camera views of the road (like the near subliminal flashes of it we saw) and the reviewers commentary. Watching this guy bounce up and down talking about the car wont happen again for me. The fact that I watched it at all shows how desperate I am to see videos of this ugly new Cayman.
