I use Firefox. For no reason other than brand loyalty lol. Stupid I know, but I grew up using Firefox, and now I'm just... attached to it. My stepdad was pretty techie and we had Firefox as the only browser on our home computers from around 2007 onward I think. I'll probably switch down the line but for now it's just like, an old friend.

@Melanocetus johnsonii Yes both are open source but indirectly Google have control what to do with this. More than 90% commits on this open source projects are from Google's employee. We must save Gecko engine. Anyday chrome can detach itself from chromium.

    • @Putper

@Melanocetus johnsonii competition/alternatives are good and should exist. Not necessarily because chromium is bad, but because competition pushes the market. Any kind of monopoly is bad. Yes Chromium is open-source, but Google has a huge influence on internet standards because of their market share, which only grows.

Bottom line: Mozilla Firefox is more customizable and can be configured (hardened) by expert users to be more privacy-friendly than Brave. However, by default, Firefox is not very privacy-friendly, as it sends telemetry data to Mozilla quite regularly. An alternative to hardened Firefox, would be LibreWolf.

I have to agree! Can't stand the snobbery on their forums. They spend more time policing how you word shit to not offend anyone than fixing bugs, but are themselves offensive in assuming you're an idiot for not understanding the programing behind FF (as if "User" would even imply that) and didn't explain something right, because they read shit between the lines you never said!
They get their feelings all bent when you clearly and logically demonstrate that they did something for a good reason that has bad side affects, like the time they blocked all I-Frames (A WWW standard) because people were using them to show copy written material from other sites in them, but in doing so they also blocked the ones that originated from within your own domain, in effect breaking many peoples whole websites! They tried to defend it with a clause in their "Policy", and it's very name proved they were wrong, and stupid: It was the "Same origin" clause stating clearly that I-frames and tables... must display content from within the same domain as the page, but not display content from other domains!
They argued with people for months with all kinds of bogus and false excuses, before they finally decided to fix it, and that without ever admitting it was stupid as F to do it, or to do it in such a stupid way in the first place, and not a single one of them apologized to the thousands of people who's sites they broke at a potential loss of business, and had to beg them nicely to fix it, or else get kicked off the forum!

From what I've read, hardened firefox is far better than brave, i.e turning off intrusive telemetry is easier on firefox/icecat than brave. And I don't really agree with brave's crypto tokens -- or targeted online advertising in general, for that matter. Way to shady for me.
    EDIT:
10:43 Here is my problem with BAT. First off, I don't have a problem with the idea of ads. I have a problem with the idea of massive data-driven targeted ads that can predict when you're most likely to impulse buy. That's not healthy for society and it's literally preying on people who are vulnerable to impulse manipulation. All Brave does with BAT is replace existing targeted ads with their own targeted ads that the content creator has less control over. If I choose to set up my brave rewards such that no BAT rewards go to a certain creator, they don't get a penny (even if I spend multiple hours on their platform). Interestingly, you can't turn off Brave's own share, I guess they made sure to cover their own access to the gravy train.
The only ads that I will tolerate are ones that use no data whatsoever from my end. In other words, if I click into a site at the same time as someone from around the world, the two of us should get the same ad regardless of location or behavior. That's why I have no problem at all with sponsor segments on youtube videos. Two people watching the same video will get the same ad.
I understand that this will cut into the funding cycle that the internet relies on, but I genuinely believe that even an internet built around paywalls is a better solution than one with hypertuned machine learning algorithms targeting the least sophisticated users.

I'm a Firefox guy. I've a dual boot PC (Linux/Windows) plus an Android phone. I switched to Brave a couple of years ago (maybe 3). The bookmark sync feature was shit. Whenever I added a bookmark or edit one, it made duplicates on all machines (and duplicates of that duplicates). After that I visited the Github Issues and I saw 2k+ bugs and features. A quick browsing showed that they were working almost only for the crypto side, little to no bugfixes. After that I switched to Firefox and never looked back.

I use Firefox with a customized arkenfox profile and a few extensions. The ability to easily harden firefox is one of the main reasons I switched back from chrome. Brave is great for an out-of-the-box experience, but it's difficult to go beyond that. I think it boils down to whether or not you're willing to put in the time and effort to understand what you browser is doing and how it works or if you just want something that works out of the box and has a few nice features. Neither approach is wrong, but being an advanced user I won't be switching to Brave anytime soon. I also have personal issues with their CEO as mentioned in the video.

    • @A432Hz
      @A432Hz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Pearl yeah, the crypto crap and the CEO are a turn off, but I think the one saving grace is that it is open source. If brave is thinking of pulling a scam, it would be harder to do that if the source code is out.
This is also my point to those people who quit using Firefox because they’re “pro-censorship” or whatever political thing they disagree with; I don’t think it matters as much when the source code is out, so there is no need to stop using the browser.
Well, if the purpose is to not support the company by abstaining from the browser, I see. But when I see a decent open source browser from a company with politics I disagree with, I’m there for the browser, not for the company.

I just checked out Firefox again for the first time after probably about 10 years (thanks to your video), and they've fixed a lot of the reasons why I quit Firefox in the first place. I currently use only Chromium-based browsers because they had all the extensions, and I currently have 32 extensions that I could not live without, and I found every single one of those extensions also available on Firefox. Nice. The other reason why I quit Firefox about 10 years ago was that I liked how Chome would auto-fill the address bar with something that you've been to before so that when you press enter, you immediately go to it. On Firefox, even as recent as a couple years ago, I had to start typing, take my right hand off the home row of the keyboard, press the down arrow key, and then press enter. I ain't doing that crap every time I want to go to a frequently typed URL. But now, in the current version of desktop Firefox, it auto-fills just like Chrome used to, saving me valuable keystrokes and eventual hand pain.
Jury's still out if I will daily drive Firefox, but I might give it a go for a while.

I've used Firefox for a very long time on my desktop PCs. Even so, every once in a while, I take a detour and try out alternatives like Brave or Opera. And as much as I like them, in the end I keep going back to Firefox. On my mobile device it's a different story. I've used Firefox there too, but at some point (don't ask me about the version) it became so excruciatingly slow, it was practically unusable. I switched to mobile Brave and stuck with it ever since.

    • @svampebob007
      @svampebob007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I was just about to say this, I've put my pinky in a lot of desktop browser with always being into Firefox, sure it's not very user friendly OOTB, but when you spend a couple months trying and understanding add-ons and settings it's just superior in every other way.
There's a huge focus on "privacy" and at this point it feels more like a escape goat rather with a very loos meaning, the reason I prefer FireFox is because it makes the internet more pleasant to use, if the right amount of customization not only do you "keep your privacy" but you also get rid of 90% of the annoying shit companies and web developers feel the need to implement in their services. like skipping hard-codeded TH-camr E-whoring their merch or a sponsor, pointles intro/outro... or simply just getting rid of that stupid cookie message (since I delete all the cookies when I close firefox).
With that little rant, when it comes to Mobile..... holly fucking shit, what am I supposed to do with this performance?
tabs can take up to a minute to load a basic website, with or without any of the very few add-ons that are available, add-ons on mobile WOUL be AWESOME!
But when I have to wait this long? Sorry but FUCK THAT SHIT I'm gladly using Chrome or Brave over the embarrassment that is Firefox mobile.
I've tried several times to get back to FireFox because with the addons it even makes mobile browsing so nice again... in theory, but the speed is just embracing and annoyingly slow.

When Brave first dropped, it was kind of a buggy unstable mess. But when they revamped it with 2.0, that eliminated most of the issue. I still run into the odd website here and there that doesn't work with Brave for some reason. But they are pretty rare. And, that's why I have Firefox and Edge, for just those cases.

    • @nicodemous52

Really nice video. Good stuff. I personally have been looking for a good 2nd browser. I run firefox daily as my main, but between 2 computers, I have multiple online accounts, I use one for one set of accounts, and the other for those sets of accounts. I use firefox as my mine, I just am use to it. However with Brave out the box, it has a much newer refined feel to the look of the interface. I don't know much about the Crypto stuff thats on it, but honestly I don't know if its a big deal to look into to turn off or what not. Over all, for a second browser for my purposes its quick, I like the feel to it. Much better than Chrome IMO. I like that it uses its own search instead of google. I am big on alternatives and really like this feel for the new Browser. Really enjoyed listening to the video.

  • @peternrdstrm

I would say, that Librewolf is a much closer comparison to Brave. While Firefox is the popular pick, LW will do a lot of out-of-theh-box privacy for you, the sams way Brave does. The only thing is, that firefox can become librewolf if enough time is given to hardening it and keeping up-to date. On the other hand ungoogled chromium can't really "become" brave on it's own. What I'm trying to tell you is
    A. Firefox/UGC are options that need hardening, but get you very far in the privacy world
    B. LibreWolf and Brave work out of the box, and are as good if not better than their counterparts uptop.
    C. Firefox is more flexible, but that leads to more work being needed on it.

I think Firefox lost the shine on me around the time of the Mr. Robot ad experiment.
As I recall, that was around the time when we first got Fenix (or was it just Quantum?) on mobile, with a lot of the previous features like Send Tab without opening browser, Tab Queueing, and many of the extensions gone so it really rubbed me the wrong way when I was already tolerating them.
Then the Mr. Robot thing happened. Even if it wasn't _actually_ malware, it shows me that Firefox is actually willing to inject sketchy ads into my browser without saying anything about it beforehand. That makes the browser lose a lot of luster from me.
Don't get me wrong, I still support Firefox, it's just the management in both commercial and development side has been questionable for me that I just have to take a break from their mess every now and then, waiting to see when they'll pull another Quantum.

Ive always loved FF browser, and I particularly LIKE the mobile re-design. As a microG user i love the ablity to add an icon to the desktop and use the site as an app. I just wish they would keep feature parity and bring it back to the desktop version as well!!! Other than that its a customizable, strong browser! We have to oppose the chromium monopoly to save the internets inner workings from googles control.

Wow. Congrats on the video - a really balanced and thorough approach. I absolutely agree that both FF and Brave had some questionable decisions. There's really no fan boy stuff there :). Even though this video is a year old, I think not much has changed. I still use them both, trying to decide which I like more in terms of UI/UX... FF is still more sluggish but more stable and robust (and i am just more used to it, i have to admit), I think. Brave still needs add-ons in order to manage tabs as the default options are not sufficient. But in the end, on my company PC, I use Chrome/Edge 😞 because of compatibility concerns and issues.

Wait a minute, Firefox has had profiles since more than 10 years now! You just start Firefox with the --p option and it'll give you the profile manager where you can create and manage your profiles and also start the browser in different ones. I wonder where is that functionality in Brave though? I have never seen a profile manager there?
