    Heads-up people, you can save around $50 on the Dell by getting the "M" version which has the model name U2720QM. It's the exact same monitor, except instead of coming with a DisplayPort cable, it comes with an HDMI cable.

      @@Ben-tt3cg I've been using the Dell for a month now. It's a nice monitor. The lack of a speaker has been a little challenging here and there. The included USB-C cable is on the short side, and you can't use any old USB-C cable to connect it to a computer. To get a longer cable, you need to drop like $65+ for a Thunderbolt USB-C cable.

    The LG only costing 3/4 of what the Dell does is worth a 9/10 advantage. The extra $150 puts them in different classes in my mind.

    It was a tie! =) But the LG should've gotten 8/10 for the $150 price difference, instead of just 1 pt over the Dell. That's a big difference to us plebs ='( Great video btw!

    I have my M1 Mac Mini (base 8/256) hooked up to my Vizio E60 E3 in my bedroom. the TV sits at the foot of my bed on a wide dresser. I also have the LG 27UD58-B (purchased in late 2017) on my desk that sits next to my bed. The LG is still going strong with no degradation in picture quality or performance. I switch the Mac back and forth depending on work or play. Monitor for work and play. The Vizio for Media consumption and play.

    I had the Dell 2720q and replaced it with the 32" LG UltraFine when I switched jobs. I think the picture quality is comparable with both. The swivel arm on the LG is a big benefit and the 90 watt USBC charge is a benefit for the Dell. It's important to note that with the Dell, you can only choose high speed USB 3.1 OR 60Hz refresh rate, not both. That was a big downside to the Dell.

    • @b3naqua
      @b3naqua  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good info! Yeah, I noticed the USB rates go down to 2.0 when on 60hz, which sucks. I think the same thing happens on the LG 27 inch, too, when using the M1 via usb-c. On your 32 inch LG, do the USB-A ports retain their faster speeds when using usb-c?

    • @dcallan1
      @dcallan1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@b3naqua Good question. I haven't tried. I switched to a higher wattage notebook XPS15 that required a docking station. Now that I know the LG does the same, I presume the limitation is a result of the bandwidth of the port.

      They are similar because practically every popular IPS monitor on the market is an LG display. Dell's ultrasharps have been built around LG panels practically forever. Same goes for Apple displays. Since the Dell mentions DCI-P3, its probably based on the newer panel LG uses in the 27UP850.

    For anyone wondering what 4K Monitor to buy for their M1 Macbook, I got the LG 27UP850, 4k works perfectly with crisp letters when scaled up/down in display settings, monitor works as a hub perfectly, and it doesn't wake up when the mac is asleep. Color settings can be tweaked to your liking through settings. Don't buy a NON 4k, NON usbc hub monitor, you are just making your life miserable, they got many problems with M1s.

    Dunno if it's just my unit. But I got the Dell, and there is some quality control issues with the monitor (at least with mine). If you look carefully you can see adhesives exposed on the bottom frame. thanks for the video Ben, it's is what I wanted to know, but there are some other things to mention, for example in terms of price for the LG, there are some slight deference in between the Ultra-fine, based on my research, the ones that have 90 or 96W output delivery will be more expensive than the 60W,
    the good thing about the Dell is that uses the normal power cord, no adapter needed, VS the LG that uses the adapter which if it was damaged then it will be like $100 to buy a new one tho,
    also LG iguess has a split screen between the 2 HDMIs? like if you wanted to display to screens in one,

    Sup Ben! Another thing to note is the Warranty Dell: 3 years vs 1 Year for the LG.
    Edit: I've also been looking at the BenQ monitors but at this price range the 4k version doesn't have USB-C (not that I can use it anyways I have a 2015 MBP and an old PC). :(

      Good point about the warranties! BenQ monitors are excellent as well. I tried a 32 inch one with usb-c which had an amazing picture but really bad viewing angles (it was a VA panel, not an IPS). I like the pixel density of the 27 inch models.

      Thanks Amit! Glad it was helpful for you! Weirdly, the Dell lets me select sRGB under color > preset modes > color space, and then RGB under input color format. As an LG UltraFine owner, I really appreciate using the USB type-c connector for my MacBook Pro. Charges just fine as expected, but being able to plug in a USB Logitech webcam on the display, and have that automatically be connected to my MacBook is pretty slick. When I'm mobile I use the built in camera, but when attached to the display, again with USB type C, you instantly get these other peripherals connected (and powered). @@b3naqua I have a 2nd monitor with DVI, an Apple Cinema HD and until I got it on the enduser Beta RC2 version of BS11.2 a couple days ago, I was unable to use Apple's HDMI-DVI adapter; I had to use a 2nd party USB-C to DVI adapter. That killed 1 of 2 USB-ports. As I have the 8/256gb version, I needed an external USB-C SDD for my 200 gb of photos as I found it took up to 47 seconds to open the photos app via my external USB-A HDD so I got a Sandisk Extreme E61 HDD which took the opening of the photos app down to 3 seconds but that killed the 2nd USB-C port which meant the Dell U2720qm monitor had to be connected via HDMI and I couldn't use the downstream hub built into the Dell monitor; thus I haven't had much experience using that hub. I did try to connect the SDD via the hub but speeds close to halved on the SDD so gave up on that and started looking for a good Thunderbolt dock to get more ports but found they cost a fortune. The issue is now under control with BS11.2 as I have regained the port using HDMI-DVI to the Apple Display and USB-C to the Dell and the spare port for the SDD so now I can use the Dell hub but so far so good.

      Glad you liked my video! I haven't tried the 2520, so I'm not sure about that model, but I've been using the 2720 for a few months now with M1 and it works reaaaally well. It's not perfect tho. My biggest gripe is when the M1 is plugged into it via usb-c, the rest of the USB ports on the monitor are all downgraded to usb 2.0 speeds. So file transfer thru the monitor can be pretty slow. But the image quality is so awesome! I'll probably do a follow up video about the 2720, so stay tuned!

      @@b3naqua Nice. Pulled the trigger last night on a supposedly updated version of the Dell i.e. 2021 model, used/renewed for about the same price - model: Dell S2722QC. Also a 27" with usb-c (65W max output). Similarly the USB ports can only charge while the usb-c is plugged in, which in my view is a trade-off since I don't want to have my MBA-M1 charging at all times. That being said, I will test the idea of merely plugging in the cable while actually using the DP or HDMI connection for the MBA, and see if my webcam or other usb devices will work simultaneously. None of these considerations are a "deal breaker" if unsuccessful, just a minor annoyance. Since I didn't opt for expedited delivery (more $), I won't know until after Christmas how all this is going to work. Thanks for your careful and practical review. Merry Christmas.

      In the monitor settings, go to Display > usb-c prioritization > try selecting high resolution, then try high data speed and see what kind of results you get with usb data speeds. I think it may be a limitation on the monitor that when high resolution is selected, you get 4K 60hz, but the USB ports go down to 2.0, which is annoying. I usually use the high resolution mode for the faster refresh rates.
