  • Does the top end of my Royal Enfield Bullet 500 motorcycle engine sound normal to you? I made this video for a friend who wants to compare the sound of the top end on my bike to the sound his makes. It's a clanky motorcycle, but I don't think I have anything to worry about.

    Cheers, was thinking of replacing them anyway.
    Forgot to mention, doesn't make noise when starting cold, starts after about 30 secs of running/warming up. Also, was no noise before I serviced the head (head face/skim, new composite gasket, new head studs and nuts) put it back together, clack clack clack, don't know why this should affect the rockers/valves?

    hi,thanks again for your time.I checked sound of mine.I think ours are same!!!,we both share the "tick tick" sound.do you think that the mechanic was playing around with me?The bull is my father's,he gave it to me,so I am new with "him". how can we know if there is adequate amount of compression load on kicker while starting(without using instruments)?

    Mine sounds like this (knocking): "Royal Enfield 'knocking' sound from top end" youtube video.
    Traced the knocking with the screw-driver stethoscope method to the exhaust rocker box. Found wear on the rocker case where the rocker arm has been striking the case and dents from the rocker stud nuts. Added 2 more gaskets (3 in total) to raise the cover but hasn't helped the knocking. Any suggestions? slimmer rocker bearings? grind out the case a bit?

    Hi again. A really rough check of compression is to remove the spark plug, press your thumb onto the plug hole to seal it and operate the kick start slowly. You should feel the compression as the piston rises on the compression stroke. Also with the plug in get someone to push down the kickstart while you listen for air leaks possibly around the decompressor. If you are on your own brush soapy liquid around anywhere that might leak and operate the kickstart and watch for bubbles. Good Luck

    Sounds like my 2002. Thanks for your post as I do not have any other Iron Head Bulls to compare with. Glad that it does not affect your performance and is just a part of the design. I too have a slight amount of runout in my intake pushrod.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. Old engines make a lot of noise during normal operation.

    • @OsoVOX
      @OsoVOX 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks again. Right after I posted I found that my Head Steady was a little loose. I tightened it up real good and the noise was cut at least in half. I also got a slight turn on one of the cylinder clamps on the crankcase which might have helped some. This bike just keeps on teaching me things.

    Just ground out the case a couple of mil where it hit, still noisy, checked case and it's not left any marks this time? Might be the rockers themselves but they look fine, guess if it was ever hitting the case in the first place the rockers are probably a bit warped.
    Thanks again.

    Tighten Tappet, replace rokers if required
    Check for valve and guide play, if so then change
    Also check timing gears play

    Very lovely sound, seems my Bullet's valves are even little bit more loud. I need that clack-clack, for me it is a very fine acustical valve control ... ;-)

    Hello my Californian friend, Your Bullet is a shade quieter than mine and I have an 05 reg Sixty - 5, basically the same engine but with a 5 speed box left hand (foot) change and electric boot. I have heard of disappearing compression when valves stick open, usually after standing a while if not left at TDC with both valves closed. Also if carbon bits get stuck in the decompressor valve keeping it slightly open. Hope this all helps. Cheers Dave from N.E. UK.

  • @HAMZADKHAN

    I saw my brother's bullet today.It's engine has less sound than mine,but it has like less than 50% of compression that I have on my kicker.I think he needs 2 or 3 kicks to fire it up,while I can start my bull at the first kick even after a "COLD" week.when I first tighted my tappat valves,I also had less sound,but compression was low,what problems can a bull have with this kind of low compression load?

  • @MrSimenem
    @MrSimenem 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video. These noises are an inherent trait of the bullet. But i am more interested with the amal carb you are running. Could you enlighten me as to the performance of this carb. My 500 has the VM 28 carb. And how to source it.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Bullet came with the Amal carb already installed, so I can't compare it to the stock carb. The engine has good power at all rpms with no flat spots, so I like it. Nfieldgear.com sells a conversion kit with this carb and manifold.

    my 1990 sounds same. the soft kinda weighty sound. the sound is normal from the heads and valves. i used to hear this sounds. and complain my dad as its his. so he is like this normal son. 😂
    your Bullet sounds the best out in road. here in india to reduce the valves or engine sound they play with silencer and what not. great sound buddy 😎

    • @greasemonkey1744
      @greasemonkey1744 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Georgy Georgekoshy no not really. What happens to your gears? Starting problem is related to carb setting or ignition timing.. if you ignition is okay. Then carb is the culprit or you cant really know. Spark plugs too 😅

    • @hoohoohoblin

      +rahul vats It came with the motorcycle when I bought it, so I have never ridden a Bullet with the stock carburetor. I don't know how much more power it makes, but it works well and doesn't have any flat spots. Power is good at all RPMs.

  • @notwocdivad
    @notwocdivad 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Hamzadkhan, If your push rods cannot spin when adjusted they are too tight, See Hoohoohobli's video on how to adjust the tappets. Also if they are too tight and left for too long you can burn out the exhaust valve as the mixture is burning while the valve is cracked open a bit. Is your exhaust pipe blueing? this could also be the result of the exhaust valve being slightly open when firing occurs. More to follow.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want to take one for a ride and try it out. I haven’t had a chance to do that yet. I’ve heard that they are way more reliable and low maintenance, which is great. And they still have the classic look, so I like everything I’ve heard about them.

    • @anirudhchauhan1698
      @anirudhchauhan1698 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hoohoohoblin i have both ci and uce, the major difference is power, uce will get more then ci engines, vibrations is their in uce engine, it has its own thum but missing ci engine thumb, ci engines were more stabler than now uce engine.

    • @anirudhchauhan1698
      @anirudhchauhan1698 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If one wants to go uce engine, go for 500 cc or 350 standard because it has heavier crank which means more thumb and feel.

    or Holy Crap (Jesus S**t) To all the old buggers like me who were brought up on British bikes this is music to our ears. None of this Japanese, liquid cooled whizzer motors for us. Strange really as the UJM's are more reliable (usually) than Brit bikes, What they lack is "character" which is something you cannot "make", a bike has either got it or it hasn't.
