Royal Enfield Bullet Ride

  • The Royal Enfield Bullet has been sitting for quite a while with a broken kickstart pawl, so it was time to roll it downhill and fire it up to see if it still runs. Fortunately, the old Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle still runs strong. I need to take the transmission apart and fix it sometime soon so I don't have to push start it.

    I changed my bad K.S. pawl last week and discovered a small crack in the kickstart shaft section that holds the pawl. Apparently a backfire event worked it's magic. I put it back together with a new $5 pawl and just try to start it carefully until the new shaft gets here. The ratchet mechanism for the gear shift scheme is a hoot. I forgot to mark the inner adjustable ring when taking it apart, but the "center it up" guesstimate was actually an improvement. These are great bikes. There is no better way to get the feel of 1940's motorcycling. 50 years of spare parts & knowledge makes it happen at an affordable level for us casual collectors. These are truly universal machines. What those guys did in the past with these machines was groundbreaking. Hats off to hoohoohoblin for making these great practical videos!

    You can officially register that bike in California as a hybrid now. ;-)

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. When you factor in all the miles I have to push the bike and add it to miles traveled when it is running, the gas mileage is in hybrid territory for sure.

    Good to see you back on the Bullet! Would you make video on replacing the pawl? That'd be great!
    Thanks for your other Enfield maintenance videos, I've found them really useful when tackling jobs on my bike.

      +Dunholmpiper Thanks. I'll be taking the transmission apart this winter when the weather gets bad. I am also going to move the brake to the left and the shifter to the right.

    Sounds good, a little dusty, perhaps.... roll starting an RE bike like that is akin to a plane taxing down the runway before it picks up speed to take off...

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! I was really happy I got it started. It is a primitive machine.

    • @velankannischoolyercaud6964
      @velankannischoolyercaud6964 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, it is primitive.. much more so when you compare it with the modern technological sleek machines that are available... like comparing a clod hopping tractor to a sleek BMW... but there is that irresistible charm.. I have a '77 model RE...

    Oh, the bad good old days. This is the motorcycle you want to keep? It sounds like it could fall apart at any moment.

      Tools won't help you find all the parts that fall off the motorcycle.

      Any fool can buy a 170 MPH Hayabusa/ZX12 & twist the volume control; maybe about 1% of those folks can actually ride those machines to within possibly 90% of their capability. The Iron Barrel Bullet is a time machine for those of us that grew up after the "Age 'o Britbikes". I have two of these beasts circa 1999 and a 1983 4 cylinder Honda 550 Nighthawk "Cruiser". The Honda has shaft drive, disc brakes, electronic ignition, 4 hydraulic valves per cylinder, 6 speeds, and cast alloy wheels. The Honda's an amazing piece of hardware, designed about 40 years after the Bullet. Transported back to 1940 it could have set lap records worldwide even equipped with it's slack cruiser geometry, pretty basic suspension, turn signals & center stand. I grew up around Japanese hardware, but I really enjoy tinkering with the Enfields the most. What really amazes me is how well the Indian mechanics can keep them operational under some pretty brutal conditions. The Bullet is frugal and as Gupta says has a large knowledge base available. Parts are harder to get for my 1983 Honda that my Bullets. Bullets aren't a suitable hobby for everyone, but for folks that don't mind mechanical tinkering, very rewarding. I'm pretty sure a Hayabusa in India would be at a real disadvantage long term.

    Ya burned right through that first stop sign, your ticket is in the mail LOL. I have a 2000 Bullet 500 and it shifted like crap, the absolute worst, but that's because the bike was designed for right shift, left brake. yours has US DOT mandated hog-poge linkage converting it to left shift, rt. brake to make it import compliant. Convert it back and you'll thing it's a different bike. That's what I did. Then you can make a TH-cam Video of the job. Thanks
