I'm pretty sure this video's gonna make me cry. ;w; It looks really well made! I've felt really nostalgic about KagePro all week until I realized....it's almost the annual "try to not get hit by a truck day."
First off this is an AMAZING video, and actually cleared things up for me (how both Takane and Haruka came back as Ene and Konoha) which even after reading tons on kagepro I had never figured out. (Also dang I'm sharing this with everyone I know because it's masterful) That said, you cheeky guy, skipping Kano in your conclusion! xD I'm gonna write out how he fits into it, though waaaay less eloquently and more off the top of my head (If I missed it due to multitasking, you have my apologies) Kano is paired fairly frequently with Kido, and has important bonds with Seto He represents this aversion to death in that he does what clearing eyes wants just to protect them, even at the cost of the lives of others (potentially Hibiya and Hiyori, though it's not entirely confirmed I don't think) And his difficulty in living in the form of his self hatred in going along with clearing eyes. Kido defends his character in the novels as well. Their relationship is not shown as blatantly after childhood, but it still clearly impacts them both. He likewise considers Kido and Seto his first friends, and also develops a deep love for his sister, Ayano. They show him how to live and be loved (properly, unlike how his mother showed him, though it still taints his perceptions as he grows), but this isn't fully realized until Seto finally reaches past his lies to truly understand, and he's made to confess everything to Kido as well. But Kido doesn't reject him as he fears, but rather accepts him and his troubles, finally showing Kano just how off his perceptions had been all along, and finally (or at least significantly) crushing his beliefs that he had to carry everyone's burdens for them or lose their love. And it's in this kind of state that he can finally start to really trust them all. I don't remember if his apology to Shintaro is before or after this, but it's clear that he's ready to face the world as opposed to obsessing over just Kido, Seto, and Ayano I love both Kano and MCA, and they're a lot of what got me into kagepro at all, really, so I've gotta give kudos to my favorite character in this xP Kano is a really interesting character to me, because his methods of caring for people are so twisted so long after his mother, the catalyst for his view of the world, is dead. That just as the positive impacts we can have on people are far reaching, even after we're gone (such as with Ayano) that the negative things we do to people can likewise leave long lasting damage, even after our deaths (such as Kano's mother, and really, Kido's father, and minus the death, Seto's bullies etc etc) But that even then, it's not hopeless. Kano can still love and be loved, even while his view of things is still so twisted, even as he struggles to find a way to be a good person past that messed up worldview, to really trust people, to finally grasp that love can be unconditional. And it's really only near the end of things that his arc really sees progress, as he's hit rock bottom and in desperation finally confesses to Seto, who can finally help him due to that one act, and Kano finally, finally gets that progress which Kido and Seto were able to achieve so much earlier. Dude, I can't thank you enough for all the time you've given so that people can fully experience the project. It's helped me clear up my doubts (even as a long time kagerou project fan), and knowing that someone cares for the project so deeply, and wanting to share the message behind it has greatly touched me. Thank you for spreading your kindness!
After hearing Additional Memory, it just adds more depression salt into Lost Time Memory and Ayano’s Theory of Happiness... I can’t wait for the Reload anime, and the translation and debunk for the new Imaginary Reload album. Thank you for summarizing the history for Kagepro. I hope you could try make an updated version once everything is about to conclude :D
ive loved kagepro for years, but i felt like i never quite understood it until watching this. even though im not one to dig for more meaning outside of entertainment, the way you summarized the feelings and moral behind the project left me holding it closer to my heart than ever. it hit so close to home by the end of this i was crying, and even though i cry a lot at angst-filled media, the fact it was tears based on connecting the moral to myself rather than just the story, was overwhelming. i didn’t think kagepro would be like this to me, aka, now very special. this is such a good video, clean, organized, and really helped fill in all the gaps i had missed on the project throughout the years. it wasn’t hard to follow along (even though i knew a lot of kagepro). you kept it simple but detailed enough to get everything needed across. thank you for this video.
Kagepro timeline where everything's the same except shin got his new keyboard before meeting the dan and wins against clearing eyes by hitting him with the all powerful keyboard
Man I still remember randomly stumbling upon Heat-Haze Days in my middle school days shortly after the PV was released. It was truly a historical moment for every anime/vocaloid fan out there. The vague, multi-media level storytelling of Kagerou Project will always carry a certain charm to it that probably wont be replicated by anything else.
As a hard core fan of the songs and manga, this is just the thing I needed to fully understand what I love about this series. Totally didn't cry at all either!
I remember at some point running into Jin's songs by chance while going through a Miku faze and stumbling upon headphone actor and childrens record. Then i looked up the songs on youtube and found the mv's and fanboyed for a long time over them and really having the time of my life with just the songs. I then left them after a while thniking how cool it would be if they were like an anime or something. flash years later and i found out that the songs were only PART of an amzing story that still to this day is my favorite. I love the Kagerou Project and will always remember reading and watching summaries like this, and thank videos like this that reminds me how happy i was when i first found this whole thing. Thanks for the video!!!!
No man, thank you. I started getting into the Kagerou Project with the mess of an anime that was Mekaku City Actors, which was obviously a mistake from my part. But thanks to you I was able to find the proper "beginning" to the medias and finally understand this amazing and beautiful story that Kagerou Project is, and the funny thing is that it's not even finished yet, so at the very least I'm glad that I'll be able to enjoy the conclusion of the other media for the following years. Again, I don't think I could have gotten to this without the effort you put into this and passion you have for it, so I can only thank you. You are an amazing guy :)
The Kagerou Project was always a complex puzzle for me to interpret so I am very happy to run across this many years after I was originally introduced. And I must say, I internally screamed when I heard one of the songs from the To the Moon series paired with Lost Time Memory! I love TtM so dearly so I guess I freaked out quite a bit, haha
Almost August 15th and I'm yet again here, after listening the songs nonstop during August. Thank you so much for doing the video that brings me back to such wonderful days when nothing was unraveled and the process of figuring the story out ❤🐍
After finishing the novels and the manga, and while waiting for Kagerou Daze no. 9, I watched this video and now I'm a sobbing mess. It may have many many flaws, but Kagerou Project is something that took my hand and walked alongside me for many years, making me grow for the better and for the worse. I'm so glad and thankful I found out about this series. Thank you so much for this video, you did such a great job!
Thank you for this Thanks to kagerou days I met some of my best friends, my name yellow deceiver is even a homage to shuuya ahaha Thanks for keeping kagepro content around Thank you so much Just thank you
Thank you so much for this video! I got interested in the kagerou project after hearing some of the songs (kagerou days, headphone actor and outer science) and then watched the anime. The anime was pretty decent in my opinion, although didnt feel completed. I looked up "mekakucity actors explained" and found this video, and im seriously moved to tears by this beautifully told story with amazing characters and thought put into it. The kagerou project as a whole, without a doubt, tops anything ive watched or experienced in this case so far.
Amazing analysis of all of the different mediums in which Kagerou has been presented. You did a fantastic job with explaining the plot with the songs, as well as how the manga, novels, and anime (well as well as the anime does, because it feels like its own entity sometimes) visualise the music, as well as make their own interpretations at times. Unfortunately with the 2nd season of the anime, it's been moved from a WiP to unknown about 8-10 months ago, and there have been no updates since then.
Holy shit... That was a lot to take in, and I almost cried at some parts like Shintaro's relationships with Ayano, Haruka, and Takane :'D... Overall, this video was well-made and I love it
This really REALLY helped clear things up for me. I had understood the story for the most part, but my biggest questions were answered for sure, and having the songs explained in depth in their true order was the most helpful aspect of the whole video. I remember reading the manga and just being SO confused about the second timeline and just being completely unable to follow. But wow ya Im about to go out and buy all of the light novels now wowowowowowow.
god you did a great job on this, I’m so happy that decided to do another kagepro story recap, this one is much more detailed than the other one and it is very much appreciated, even when i read the novels, everything is really hard to piece together. im so happy that i found this channel, it’s really hard to find new kagepro content these days
I had just finished Mekakucity Actors and was really confused about so many things, so this really helped me connect the dots and realize there was so much more
Now I want to read the novels and listen to all the songs again! This was another amazing video, you put so much effort into explaining everything. keep up the great work!
I know I'm late to watch this but still, let me thank you. Very very good video which captures the Kagerou Project perfectly. Almost no other piece of media makes me almost cry everytime like KagePro does but this video definitely did that too.
Wow this must have been so much work! I myself only only got into the Kagerou project when all the songs were already released, so it was really interesting to learn how the story slowly unfolded for the people following along. At the same time it helped me understand the connection between the songs and the different media so much better! I had read quite a bit of the manga already and I was super confused with what was going on. You really cleared that up for me! Thank you so much for making such an amazing and detailed explanation!
I never thought it was possible... To fully explain kagerou project so well like this... Dear gosh this was a wonderful video. I might have cried a little at the end, actually at the start too when you explained how the mystery drawed the audience in and I cried in nostalgia
I know this video was two years ago but god damn I keep rewatching this and I keep crying every time thank you for making this video and thank you jin for making this whole thing 💞💞
This video is incredible! I love your Kagepro videos, it’s an incredible feat to explain this project in the first place! Watching your videos was enough to convince me to get into the project myself about 2-3 months ago. I’ve since listened to the songs countless times (Will Stetson’s covers have become an large part of my daily life at this point), read the manga and light novels, and watched the anime. I’ve watched this video twice, and the 2 hour lecture twice, as well, still amazed at how well you’re able to explain this immense and wonderful story in depth. Thank you for your dedication to this small fandom, I’m happy to join it!
What an amazing video!! Even after being a fan of KagePro for over 6 years, I’ve honestly always been confused about some of its plot and you taught me a bunch of stuff I didn’t know about some characters (like how Ene and Konoha both survived the Daze instead of only one of them, and even how Kenjirou was embezzling from the school lol). One of the coolest things about the Project is that there’s SO MUCH information and media, you’ll probably learn something new or figure something else out every time you revisit it. Thanks for such a great breakdown 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I do actually have a question though that maybe you could help me with-why was Ayano accepted into the Daze when she died alone? The Daze only takes in two people who die together on that day, but she only killed herself. That’s always gotten me
I'm 5 years late, I'm a lurker who usually doesn't comment and I'm not even that big of a fan of kagepro. But I just have to comment on how amazing this video was. It might not have been the best way for me to learn about the series fully but I very much enjoyed the ride here. Even though it's been broken down to me I'll definitely try to get the first-hand experience I should've long ago. It is surprising how a video documentary/breakdown of this high quality is from a channel with so little recognition. I know I'm writing to nothingness but I just want to say that a great video deserves a sub, at least from me.
THANK YOU!!! I'm not sure if you will see this, but I appreciate this so much. I watched a video discussing Kagerou Project (by you) earlier, and it spoke of intertwined stories of so many interesting things. However, it seemed like something that would be near impossible to get into the right way or was too daunting to start, like Montagatari. With this video I can experience things the way people who were in the Vocaloid fandom long ago did. I feel as if I missed out on a lot of fun times as I was too young, but thanks to people like you and ubnubmaster, I can really experience it all from your eyes. I'll be sure to listen to some of the songs by themselves too, but this helped me see the order of which to see them since it was hard to find a good resource. Soon I'll look into the manga as well, and will hopefully become more involved with this.
Just to clarify, only watched the song portion of the video and will attempt to read the manga + others on my own unless I need clarification, which I assume I will.
the concluding section of your analysis blew me away. After considering everything that's happened in the complex plot, you really uncovered the underlying messages that, frankly, I never even thought to consider otherwise (I was too caught up in the confusing timelines lol). It just reinstates how powerful & beautiful this series is. Amazing video!
Even though this was over an hour, I extremely appreciate all of the effort put into making this. I read the translated Kagerou Daze manga and listened to the songs before the manga, but never really understood the context behind it until now. The overall messages and stories behind them all really hit you hard in the heart. I thank you again for telling the story to us !
I always asked myself why I love this project... It got me out of a really dark time of my life, and it really marked me as the person I'm today. Now, I look back with your analysis and all I can say to you is just thank you for doing this videos in general. You're great, keep your content this good. That's all, thanks.
I've been a fan of the series for the last 5 years and I always said it was my favorite but this made me realize again how much I truly love this series. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this I can't express how happy I was watching this and obviously seeing how much time and affection you put into perfectly telling this story from beginning to end. Can't wait to see what you do next and I legit mean it keep up the amazing work I loved this video so so much :,)
Insane story both quite depressing, bcs what had happened, but even more satisfying when they finally achieve peace and move on (perfect ending), but there were some casualties. The moral of the story is relevant to this age when young people like me are most of time alone and strive to find a meaning in life or a way of life and that is the most confusing thing in my life rn, bcs i feel i should know the answer already, but im just not sure and im 19 already. I wish I could have empathic friends like this to escape to and atleast not be so alone, but it's not easy for me to find friends that would understand and helped me to finally move on, but i'll keep trying to become better and better myself and not end up like shintaro in the route where he killed Ene (tho he had a huge depression that even Ene couldn't overcome)
As someone who hasn't read the manga OR the novels, and only watched 8 of the original songs (if I didn't misscount), I liked the anime. Leaving out how exactly things happen in different timelines, I myselfe figured the story out only using the anime and the 5 songs I had seen at that time. So in my opinion the anime isn't that bad. Not perfect, but not as bad as others make it seem, which is why I'm incedible exited for Mekakucity actors Reloaded!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for making this. It's a hard story to follow but so worth it when you get it, and you explained it so well, putting all the events in place. The editing was superb too. Massive kudos!
I'm a huge fan of the Kagerou Project, and I really appreciate your videos on it, as well as Will Stetson's songs. They introduced me to this amazing world, and it's been such a great experience. A while back, I thought about how I could give back in some way, and now I'm working on animating the chapter shown at 1:19:00, which I believe is chapter 48: RED. I just wanted to say thank you, David and Will, for creating these beautiful experiences. I'm animating as I'm watching this video haha ^^ I'll watch your other video "The Kagerou Project: Complete Story" after this. Can't wait! You're probably not going to read this but there are some animations already up on my channel to check out if you have some spare time. Take care and looking forward to more videos ^^
It has been two years since I finished the project. Mostly, I just finished the novels and am still waiting for volume 13 of the manga. It still hits deep like when I first finished. KagePro was almost always in every major moment that happened in my highschool life. No matter how bad the situation, the KagePro always got me out of it. KagePro has a deep connection with me. This project touches me in different ways over the years. It will always have a place in my heart. I love this project and I hope everyone has a good august 15th.
Listening to this whole video makes me appreciate the project all the more all over again. It had been such an important part of my teenage years for many ways, but I never managed to UNDERSTAND everything you made so clear! It's like I missed the most important beats and points of the story. I appreciated it before, and I do all the more now. The video is amazing and I thank you so so much for making its story and message suddenly clear to me.
The true ending is when Shintaro gets his keyboard.
YEAH BRO NEEDS HIS KEYBOARD
Lol
Males and their keyboard
Moral of the story: Don’t die on August 14th or 15th. Stay the fuck at home
WOW. The fact that you actually managed to do the impossible - explain KagePro - is seriously impressive.

Such a sad story, a shut-in who couldn't get his keyboard. Instead gets into every shit possible. All he wanted was a new keyboard

That said, you cheeky guy, skipping Kano in your conclusion! xD I'm gonna write out how he fits into it, though waaaay less eloquently and more off the top of my head
(If I missed it due to multitasking, you have my apologies)
Kano is paired fairly frequently with Kido, and has important bonds with Seto
He represents this aversion to death in that he does what clearing eyes wants just to protect them, even at the cost of the lives of others (potentially Hibiya and Hiyori, though it's not entirely confirmed I don't think)
And his difficulty in living in the form of his self hatred in going along with clearing eyes.

I love both Kano and MCA, and they're a lot of what got me into kagepro at all, really, so I've gotta give kudos to my favorite character in this xP
Kano is a really interesting character to me, because his methods of caring for people are so twisted so long after his mother, the catalyst for his view of the world, is dead. That just as the positive impacts we can have on people are far reaching, even after we're gone (such as with Ayano) that the negative things we do to people can likewise leave long lasting damage, even after our deaths (such as Kano's mother, and really, Kido's father, and minus the death, Seto's bullies etc etc)

Anyways, I haven't read the 5th novel in like 2-3 years or something, so if I misremembered stuff I'm sorry ^^ ;
I really liked the video but gotta add that Kano rep somehow~ Even if it's just some silly rambles

YOU KNOW, PUTTING DEAR YOU IN THE BACKGROUND OF THIS WAS A DICK MOVE
I'm not crying you're crying
Higurashi feels
Kagepro timeline where everything's the same except shin got his new keyboard before meeting the dan and wins against clearing eyes by hitting him with the all powerful keyboard
I wasted 1 hour of my life watching this
Not dissapointed (cries)
Then it should be you "spent" and not "wasted".
@Holly T yeah pretty much. But seeing his\her opinion might differ, I put "spent".
@Holly T utilized? it should be "contribute"
Tino
Then it’s not wasted time
You guys are wrong, it should be *devoted*
Happy kagerou day
For some reason, I'm getting videos about Kagerou project after all these years. Ahh, the feels are coming back. I was not prepared for this.
I literally could NOT get a grasp of kagepro until I watched this video, this is the best explanation imo
As a hard core fan of the songs and manga, this is just the thing I needed to fully understand what I love about this series. Totally didn't cry at all either!
When I searched up Kagerou Project explained I just wanted like a 20 min video of some guy explaining this. This is beautiful.
Thank you for this
Thanks to kagerou days I met some of my best friends, my name yellow deceiver is even a homage to shuuya ahaha
Thanks for keeping kagepro content around
Thank you so much
Just thank you
Thank you so much for this video! The kagerou project as a whole, without a doubt, tops anything ive watched or experienced in this case so far.
hearing the mic blow out on the anime of kagerou project was fucking amazing
I'm here because I remembered this masterpiece and wanted to see if I missed anything.
Yes, today is 15 of August.
I’ve only ever had a loose understanding of Kagepro, and this video makes everything so much easier! Thank you.
So that's what happened in the anime...
I genuinely love the little drawings
As someone who is just getting into the fandom, this was very healthful more me. You did an amazing job of explaining the story!
And... I'm back for the third time. This is still a joy to watch
I had just finished Mekakucity Actors and was really confused about so many things, so this really helped me connect the dots and realize there was so much more
this video continues to be amazing. I'm definitely not crying at all
Now I want to read the novels and listen to all the songs again! This was another amazing video, you put so much effort into explaining everything. keep up the great work!
holy crap... I just finished the whole vid... great job!
(btw ITS KAGEROU DAZE DAY TODAY!!!!)
08-15-18, 12:37pm.
We truly did get shafted by studio shaft
Summer goes on…
I spent 7 hours piecing stuff together just to find this after getting nowhere .w.
Thank you hahaha
I know this video was two years ago but god damn I keep rewatching this and I keep crying every time thank you for making this video and thank you jin for making this whole thing 💞💞
Can't wait to get through this entire video soon. It was worth the wait!
iM still wondering to this day how Shion gave birth to Mary--
1:38:45 You thought we wouldn't notice that, now did you?
"without love it can't be seen" ok listen I was already emotional because of the Kagepro story you DID NOT have to bring Umineko into this
I’m amazed you took so much time to go through all these materials to explain kagerou project! Props to you.
It's been 2 years since you posted this, but I applaud you for being able to do such a succinct analysis! Great work!
I cried the whole way through.
This has nowhere near the recognition it should have, good shit mate, stunning video
Such a wonderful explanation 👏👏
I didnt think anyone could ever explain KP considering the story is all over the place. Defidently worth the wait 💕
Not perfect, but not as bad as others make it seem, which is why I'm incedible exited for Mekakucity actors Reloaded!

an incredibly well put together video that has tied up a lot of loose ends for me! Thank you!
It's back!
And thank God it is.
You deserve so much more appreciation for the work you put into this
I just wanted to say thank you so much for making this. It's a hard story to follow but so worth it when you get it, and you explained it so well, putting all the events in place. The editing was superb too. Massive kudos!
ah i’ve loved kagepro for so long this video almost made me cry thank you so much for making it
thank god you put this together... i finally understand the story 🙏🙏
That last part hit me really hard. Beautifull work friend.
Here yet another 8/15 relieving this great story :')
I realized an hour in that this was 2 hours long...Good thing though cuz if I saw it before I wouldn’t finish the vid!
This deserves more attention. It is like a movie and it's so cool!~
This video is so quite done :))) It's like a history lesson of KagePro to a newcomer like me. It gives me goosebumps :)))
I love you so much u explains it sooo smoothly
loved the cute diagrams. great retelling of the series.
Children record should have been the opening to Mekaku City Actors....
