Grant - I use 7d MkII, 5D Mk III, and 80D. Much appreciation for your videos. One thing about the 80D that I find helpful is that when it is used with certain lenses such as the 100-400 IS II (Mk2) and tele converter - it does offer zone autofocus points at f/8 - Compared to the 7D MkII or 5D MkIII which would only offer single point with 4 helpers. I know that you had very good review for the 100-400 Mk2 and it combines with 80D to have that unique capability on the 80D camera. I find it useful for birds in flight. Thanks. Kevin

Brilliant video helped me a lot, I really enjoy watching your videos they are so thorough and inadept, unlike many others youtubers I watch were they jump from subject to subject without much explanation. This video has helped me a lot! I am only recently new in the photography world, just over 3 months I outgrew my first camera the "Nikon d5300" and because of your channel and videos I decided to go with the canon 80D and am very happy with it. Thank you!!
What a fantastic explaination of all the settings and with such a beautiful accent 😃 You have made my purchase of this camera a lot easier now. Many thanks.
Hi Grant. I bought an 80D two months ago and I am still discovering the capabilities of the camera. I am particularly interested in macro shots of insects such as bees collecting honey or dragon flies drinking in a pond. Your explanations are to the point, clear and very understandable. And apart from all that, I quite like your style. Thank you very much for your time. H. Greetings from Belgium in Europe.
Hello Grant. Thank you for this video and the explanations about the personal settings by showing them, explaining their function and why doing this or that. These specific tips will be very useful, I have the 80D for a year (excellent device in many situations) and I still have the 70D. Good job, as usual!
Hi there BM, most of the settings are quite similar between the 80D and the 6D Mark 2, however I have done a dedicated 6D Mark 2 setup post on my website: www.grantatkinson.com/blog/canon-6d-mark-ii-setup-for-wildlife-photography
HELLO GRANT Thank you for this Great great video and the detail explanation about personal setting for wild life, very informative I have little bit of confuse in choosing and buying 80D AND 7 MARK 2 FOR wildlife photography, can u please suggest me which is the best to buy. THANKS AGAIN....
Hi Kranthi, the 7Dmk2 is built tougher, has a bigger body that fits people with bigger hands better, has better viewfinder autofocus, deeper buffer, faster and more responsive. The 80D has slightly better image quality with a bit less noise and more dynamic range, is more versatile in how many ways you can use it with the toch screen, is quite a bit smaller and lighter...hope something there helps
Are you going to do a similar video for the Canon 90d? I used your suggestions for my 80d and I think it really helped me. Many thanks. I’m thinking of upgrading to the 90d. Have you evaluated it?
Hey, Mr. Atkinson. very informative video. I am planning a trip to Yucatán, and this will come in handy. Also, I could not take my eyes off your tripod. Would you share some info about it? Thank you so much.
Hi Sir, the gimbal head is made by Gimpro, and its a fantastic piece of equipment for me. Its made of high quality material and very tough: www.gimprogear.com/ The tripod is a aluminium Slik 580DX Pro which is very sturdy but heavy for travel, but the gimbal head will attach to any tripod with a thread on top :-)
Grant - do you find any advantages in using the 80D over the 7D2 for wildlife other than the slightly higher resolution? I own both cameras but I use the 80D more for macro and as a backup to the 7D2. I enjoy your videos and I'd like to see some videos where you are in the field doing wildlife photography and seeing how you approach your subjects. Thanks much!!
Thanks Anthony, I am finding that the images from the 80D have lower noise, specially if I view them or use them at equal-sized outputs, to the 7D2. It is not a huge difference but it's there.... I would like to do more videos in the field, but at this stage the cost in logistics would be prohibitive. Will keep thinking about it.
Grant, do you have any recommendations about pros and cons of 80D vs 7DmkII for wildlife? Which do you find yourself reaching for more often now that both cameras are out? You've done great videos on both, but none explicitly comparing the two, and they are both approximately the same cost currently on the used market.
Yes, very happy with the camera. It has the best APS-C sensor that Canon made yet for our kind of wildlife shooting, and the swivel-tilt screen makes it very versatile when combined with DPAF Live View. We choose it when shooting small subjects in good light (iso 200-iso 800) range, over our other Canon bodies, at the time of writing.
Thanks. You are probably 3rd or 4th actual user of the camera who shares positive impressions. And also - the review is very good. Specially for people like me who don't like to read manuals :)
Do you know if this camera can produce quality resolution in low light like shooting a car interior black. I just bought it and it seems great so far. Thanks for sharing. I subbed brother.
Hi Marc, it has the best sensor so far of any other Canon APS-C camera for such kind of shooting, short of getting a full frame body of course. I think it will be helpful to your image quality if you are able to get the exposures as close as possible to what you want, whilst taking the images of course..and any extra light sources that you can add always helps when shooting blacks in low light with any dslr ...
Grant Atkinson thank you Grant. I realize what I did which was giving me grainy video quality in my car interior. I had it set to 3X zoom I turned that off and it’s better now.
Hi Grant, Thank you so so much for the advises. I am just in to the DSLR photography and planning to get 77D /80 D. I prefer to go for 77D due the new graphical user interface and which can make my life easier at this point. Would be great if you can share your thoughts. Thanks a ton.
Hi Grant! I recently bought 80d plus 70-200 f2.8 lens, Before that I had Rebel. Family members say that I take good photos but honestly I have no clue of all these advances settings which I really want to learn and make the most of my new camera and lens. As a beginner I would appreciate your advise. Thanks
Hi Shahid, the purpose of the set up video is to help get your camera set up rapidly without having to spend time reading the manual. If you have specific questions that are not covered in this video nor in the other videos I have on the 80D then feel free to post them. If I know the answer I will try share.
Hi Rajman, I have not used the 80D on that Sigma lens much so I wont be speaking from experience. Rough starting points for moving subjects might be: Ai Servo mode, Evaluative metering: Single Focus point selected manually: Ai Servo 1st Image Priority - Release: Ai Servo 2nd Image Priority - Middle . Autofocus Tracking Sensitivity - 0 unless it keeps dropping off subject then Minus 1: Accel/Decelerate - 0: AF Pt Auto Switching - 0: Lens Drive when AF Impossible - 0 - Continue Focus Search:. Those would be starting points, you are better off to try understand what those focus parameters are actually doing when making adjustments. All those focus adjustment parameters that i mentioned above are all similar in their effect on the 80D, to the ones in the 7D Mark 2, which I have explained part by part, in a 5 video series on the autofocus system. That will be relevant to the 80D ..
Hi! I just saw your video great video by the way!! I have an 80D and debating between a Tamron 150-600 and Sigma for a safari trip. Which do you recommend it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I have used the Sigma 150-600 Sport as well as both of the Tamron 150-600 models but not the Sigma Contemporary. Can be a bit tough for me to recommmend but I might tend toward the Tamron G2 though they are all quite capable The Sigma Sport is quite heavy and managing the zoom ring is not always the easiest for folk with smaller hands.
Hi Grant, Would you say that the 80D is a close second to the 7Dmarkii for birds and wildlife. I already own a 7D mark ii and a 5D mark iii but looking for second crop sensor body to sit on my Sigma 150-600 Sport. I could buy another 7D mark ii but like the option of the 80D with the 24mp and also buying it with the two kit lenses for holiday travel rather than taking around my more expensive heavy glass. Your views are much appreciated?
I would agree with that take on the 80D, it is not quite as good overall as an action camera as the 7D2 if all factors are considered, but it does bring something additional, both with regard to resolution, plus that flip screen versatility. And it can be a tiny bit better than the 7D Mk 2 in very low light.
Hi Grant great video thanks i am quite new but have a 80D and a 5Dmk 2 i was thinking of changing my Tamron 150-600 to a Canon 100-400 USM mk 2 will this lens work with both?
Hi Scott, the 100-400ii will work superbly with both the 80D and the 5dmk2. If you put on a 1.4x extender on the lens though, then the viewfinder autofocus will still work with the 80D but not the 5dmk2.
Thanks for that Grant i will be using the extender on the 80D it's just to get closer to the 600mm range i got on the tamron lens i will be replacing and hope to see a noticeable improvement with it.
Hi Scott, these things are all a bit subjective but I am not sure if the Canon EF 100-400 IS ii WITH a 1.4x iii Extender will be much of an improvement on a Tamron 150-600mm lens...for sure the bare lens works better (but only up to 400mm ). Of course each shooter has their own needs or preferences, I can only share what is relevant to my own way of using these things. :-)
Hi Scoth, I got Tamron 150-600 G2 and found tamron teleconverter is working only on live view mode but is tricky to get it done. On the Canon 400mm Prime lens my Tamron teleconverters with Canon 80D never get working, they freeze the camera. I don't know how performs with the Canon extender. But in the wildlife photography the focal length is never enough. Keep the Tamron. 600mm F6.3 is much better than 600mm F8. Also with 1.4 extender you can go to 840mm, F9 for not moving objects without loosing the image quality. With the 1.6 camera crop factor you are going to - 1344mm optical zoom.
Thank you so very much for this brilliant, clear and concise effort..!! Do you find a polarizer helpful for wildlife/bird photography (maybe not for already slow tele lenses)..?? I have the 80D for about a year and stumbled upon your videos while seeking info on extenders. I'm looking forward to using my Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 for birding (the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 is too short for distant views) and have learned more in your two of your videos than I have all year..LOL!!.
Hi Phillip, glad the video was useful. I dont use polarizing filters at all for anything to do with wildlife as i find they usually cause any darker parts of my image to become too dark. If that happens to be part of my subject then I prefer to avoid using them. The polarizing filters also slow down autofocusing, so if I am trying to photograph marine mammals or marine birds, then i avoid using them. But, if you are taking landscapes and are looking for good rendering of the water, clouds etc, then the polarizer does a good job.
Grant - can you tell me please what the set up is with the quick release plate you use with the telephoto lens? You seem to use a single lever type for one hand rather than screwing in the retaing plate. Thanks in anticipation and for 80D Video's
Hello sir...sigma 150-500 mm does it fit with canon 80d..and is this combination is good for capturing flying birds.. what will b the image quality? Thanks
I have compared those two cameras for wildlife use quite comprehensively here : www.grantatkinson.com/blog/6d-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv-7d-mark-ii-or-80d-which-mid-range-canon-dslr-for-wildlife-photography
I am a bird photographer, and currently confused between choosing 80d vs 7d mark II. I am aware that 7d mark II, is better camera, with respect to AF, build and speed. 80d has better IQ, dynamic range, and features like touch screen. But still i am confused between these two.. As a bird photographer which one should i choose?
Hi Azeez, I have done a side by side comparison, of the two cameras, perhaps that will help: www.grantatkinson.com/blog/6d-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv-7d-mark-ii-or-80d-which-mid-range-canon-dslr-for-wildlife-photography If you have some really specific questions that are not in that comparision, just write them in the comment section of the website post and i will try to answer?
I'm thinking of getting a Camera used for Photography only, I can't decide which to get?? 80D, 6D, Nikon D610, Sony A7ii, or anything else??? I thought that a flip screen would be very helpful for me when I shoot. I can;t decide and Ihave no clue!
If you aren't sure what you want, grab a less expensive camera and learn for a few years. Then, when you want to spend big money you'll know what you use and how things work. I have had a rebel T3 for 5 years and I am finally upgrading. Often times lenses are a better expenditure and will have a larger impact on what you can do with your camera.
Hi Rajat, I would say they are pretty similar to one another in terms of image quality - the 80D has a better sensor but a physically smaller one. In terms of controls, response and speed the 1Dmk4 is far superior and it is better in AF too. I have closely compared the 1Dmk4 to the 7Dmk2 here, if that can assist you further: www.grantatkinson.com/blog/canon-7d-mark-2-compared-to-canon-1d-mark-4
hi Grant is there a way engage all the single point to all point auto focus in 1d markiv as u can do in 7d ii if there is trick please share. sometime tracking moving subject is difficult wth single point that i use a lot :) thanks a lot in advnce :).
Yes, Rajat, just press the AF button on the top right back of the camera body (it has a blue grid emblem) then press your AF joystick right in the centre, if you have enabled it, it will switch with one press from Single AF pt to 45 point (though only the outer ring of points will light up all 45 are enabled.)
You can also, in the AF custom functions for the 1Dmk4, enable it to use a Single AF point, or a combination of one extra point on each side, or 8 points surrounding the one you select. Custom Function III - 8, gives you the choice. Whichever one you choose will cycle with the All 45 Point selection that you can access via the AF button and pressing the multicontroller. Page 97 and 98 on the electronic owner manual
Hi, Can you please tell me if you are shooting using TV, AV , or Manual for birds? I just got my 80d today I usually use my 5d mark iv for everything but wanted a cropped sensor, I'm getting very grainy pics?? Confused ...Thank you
It sounds like the shutter speed may need to be faster (a higher number) or else the aperture made smaller ( a higher number for the f-stop) if you are using M mode and Auto iso and the ambient light was very bright?
One thing you and most pro photographers fail to mention when you shoot raw you have too purchase software to even look at your photos. For beginners it is a good idea to shoot raw + jpeg.

Thanks Grant as a novice all the help is much appreciated.
Excellent and very useful!
Thank you kindly for your timely reply..
Thanks a lot bro..good tutorials for beginner like me
Great explanation - thank you
Great video, Thanks Eric
What is that head you have on the trip? Does it come together with that particular tripod?
Whats the make and manufacturer?
Grant - can you tell me please what the set up is with the quick release plate you use with the telephoto lens? You seem to use a single lever type for one hand rather than screwing in the retaing plate. Thanks in anticipation and for 80D Video's

80d or 7d mk ii for wildlife
I have compared those two cameras for wildlife use quite comprehensively here : www.grantatkinson.com/blog/6d-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv-7d-mark-ii-or-80d-which-mid-range-canon-dslr-for-wildlife-photography
Thank you Grant ;) very help full video
Superb helpful video, thanks :)
Hello Mr Grant! i am very gratefull for this video! very explicative !! thank you very much ! keep up the good work! subscribed!
Please let me know 80 + 100 400 mark1 is good for wildlife and birding ????
I am a bird photographer, and currently confused between choosing 80d vs 7d mark II.
I am aware that 7d mark II, is better camera, with respect to AF, build and speed.
80d has better IQ, dynamic range, and features like touch screen.
But still i am confused between these two..
As a bird photographer which one should i choose?
Hi Azeez, I have done a side by side comparison, of the two cameras, perhaps that will help: www.grantatkinson.com/blog/6d-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv-7d-mark-ii-or-80d-which-mid-range-canon-dslr-for-wildlife-photography
If you have some really specific questions that are not in that comparision, just write them in the comment section of the website post and i will try to answer?
HELLO SIR ...70 -.200 LENS ,80D CEMERA ,USING CANDY SHORTS --YES or NO.... plz Reply.....
A great video.
Great Tutorial Well Done Thanks !
I'm thinking of getting a Camera used for Photography only, I can't decide which to get?? 80D, 6D, Nikon D610, Sony A7ii, or anything else??? I thought that a flip screen would be very helpful for me when I shoot. I can;t decide and Ihave no clue!
Really depends on what kind of subject matter you will be shooting, and if there are multiple types, which will be the one most important to you?
If you aren't sure what you want, grab a less expensive camera and learn for a few years. Then, when you want to spend big money you'll know what you use and how things work. I have had a rebel T3 for 5 years and I am finally upgrading. Often times lenses are a better expenditure and will have a larger impact on what you can do with your camera.
xindiian 80d definetly
insane autofocus
good quality
u get good quality for your money
how is the iso performance of it compare to 1d mark iv. i own one thinking for an upgrade.
Yes, Rajat, just press the AF button on the top right back of the camera body (it has a blue grid emblem) then press your AF joystick right in the centre, if you have enabled it, it will switch with one press from Single AF pt to 45 point (though only the outer ring of points will light up all 45 are enabled.)
awesome thanks a lot :)
Hi, Can you please tell me if you are shooting using TV, AV , or Manual for birds?
I just got my 80d today I usually use my 5d mark iv for everything but wanted a cropped sensor, I'm getting very grainy pics?? Confused ...Thank you
Got a question I took a few Pictures outside today of the Snow and all Pictures came out Bright it looks like pencil drawing how do I fix that?
It sounds like the shutter speed may need to be faster (a higher number) or else the aperture made smaller ( a higher number for the f-stop) if you are using M mode and Auto iso and the ambient light was very bright?
Great job
i bought 80 d. sir THANKU FOR PRECIOUS VEDIO FOR KNOWLEDGE
thanks for your tips.
Well done. Thank you. This vid helped me alot.
What lens do you usually use?
I use a set of lenses, EF 70-200 f2.8 IS iii, EF 16-35 f4 L IS and EF 100-400 IS ii, also EF 400 DO f4 IS ii
Thank you so much. Grant ... well explained for the lay person! :)
does tamron 150 600 mm g2 work well with 80d
Hi Amrit Krishna, I have not used that combination together but I believe that they would work well together!
Do you have a link to the gimball setup you are using?
Here it is Larry Vaughn: www.gimprogear.com/
Thank you. Are you in South Africa?
Yes, i am based there most of the time Larry Vaughn :-)
Grant, what SD card do you use in your Canon 80D? Thank you for your time.
Very helpful. Thank you.
One thing you and most pro photographers fail to mention when you shoot raw you have too purchase software to even look at your photos. For beginners it is a good idea to shoot raw + jpeg.
Try Canon DPP it's free when you purchase a Canon SLR. I've been using it for years with raw images.
NICE!! Greetings from Germany :-)
Very helpful. Thanks
Thx a lot! You're the best!
Thank you for the video Grant. I too just bought an 80D for wildlife. Coming from a 60D it has a ton more capability.
Agree with you there Jay, the 80D has grown the series capability and customization options deeply!
Its a powerful APS-C camera :-)
