    Just an FYI. The 7D2 gives you the ability to set both the Af-ON and * button for different drive modes (i.e. 2 back button Af). I have the AF-ON button set to One Shot (spot focus) and the * button set for Ai Servo, therefore, I no longer have to rely on the Ai servo back button bumping when I want to take a stationary shot.
    Also, it is more efficient to set up the Custom Shooting Modes (C1-C3) with all your settings that way you are ready to go and you don't have to go back through the menus looking for things. For example: I have C1 set for general bird photography, C2 for sports photograpy and C3 for BIF. I use C3 because if in another mode and there's a BIF opportunity, I can quickly turn the dial to C3 without looking (dial won't go farther than C3 so I don't have to look to verify correct setting) and I am quickly ready and in my BIF settings ready to go. Note: if you setup the Customs Shooting Modes and want any changes you make to take affect, you need to enable "auto update."
    Just something to think about

      Methodical2 I am sorry but your comment is confusing. Metering mode and drive mode are two totally different things, it seems to me that you are talking about drive mode, not metering, when you mention One Shot and AI Servo.

    • @Methodical2
      @Methodical2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnny You are correct. It should be the drive mode - one shot and Ai servo. I was think drive mode, but type metering. Sorry for the confusion. I edited to state drive modes.
      Thanks

    I'm a new Photographer. I have the Canon Rebel T6 Premium Kit. I should have known to go to Canon where I would find Mr. Morris and quality video obstruction. Wow. This is one of the most informative YT videos I've ever seen. It's a perfect bridge between my oldtimey film knowledge, and modern digital camera. I had dismissed back button focusing on my new, (first ever digital) Canon t5i, but will definitely use it. I don't like the fact that the exposure locks when the shutter is half pressed. It seems like this is a solution.
    Thanks. Great video!

    You mentioned depth-of-field isn't an issue in flight photography. Yet when shooting a Canon 7D Mark II 400mm f5.6 I noticed many times the head of an eagle or hawk is sharp but the wing or tail is blurry. Stopping down to f8 seemed to improve things, and f10 gives even more keepers, when shooting with a shutter speed of 1600-2000.

    People do not seem to grasp that he uses a specific picture style because that picture style will load when you view the RAW file if you use Canon's software DPP Digital Photo Professional. SO the JPG preview on the camera will look like the final output minus minor tweaks to push saturation, contrast and sharpness etc.

    There ARE MORE options for back button auto focus. With many Canon pro grade bodies like the 7d mii, 5d s and 5d sr, 5d miv, 1dx, 1dx mii and 1 dx miii.
    Normal back button (with the AF- ON or AE Lock button) OR Custom detailed auto focus settings.
    TO SET:
    THE CUSTOM DETAILED AUTO FOCUS SETTING.
    The AE Lock button can be set from the start screen of CUSTOM CONTOLS back button set up. When you see METERING and AUTO FOCUS Start.
    *(Pause at **2:27** and you will see the INFO Detail set)*
    In the lower left corner you'll see (INFO Detail set): press INFO and you'll get four parameters to set.
    SELECT what you wish to change.
    Press SET:
    1...auto focus start position
    2....Ai-servo AF characteristics
    3....AF operation
    4....AF area selection mode
    Make the changes Press SET:
    You can set both back buttons to the detailed settings if you prefer. Or set one FOR: Auto Focus Stop or anyone of the other choices.
    Plus you can set the Depth Of Field preview button to a unique AF configuration so you can change focus point speed and tracking abilities.

  • @forsterstewartphotography2950
    @forsterstewartphotography2950 ปีที่แล้ว

    Todays ceras back button focus isn't necessary with the coverage of auto focus coverage. When shooting a bird for example that stops flying and you need to focus recompose. Merely press the back button to stop focus then recompose and shoot. And if your subject moves or takes flight simply release pressure on back button and continue focus tracking and shooting. Using shutter release button. Much simpler to do two things(focus and shoot) with one button, Rather than two things(focus and shoot) with two buttons.
    Also in winter try using back button focus with photography gloves on , good luck with that.

      Hi Bidyut! You may want to try using AI Servo AF. This is suited well for moving subjects. While you hold down the shutter button halfway, the camera will keep focusing on the subject continuously. We hope this helps!

      Hi Darrien! On some of our newer camera models, you can fine-tune the AI Servo AF to suit a particular subject or shooting situation by selecting from one of 6 preset "cases" in the menu. Examples include Case 1, which is a general purpose setting for any moving subject, or Case 5, which is great for figure skaters and such. We hope this helps!

    Dear Mr. Morris, Thank you so much for the incredibly valuable tips. Really enjoyed the way you explain things. So many combinations of the camera body and lens settings
    I am a bit confused what settings I should have for fast moving jets. Would you say that 7D MK II is better than 5D MK II & MK III ? Best wishes.

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Pat! We think you'll find the EOS 7D Mark II to be more versatile for this, as it has significantly faster maximum continuous shooting speeds available and it handles action very well. With either camerar, you'll need to set it to use AI Servo AF for continuous tracking of the subject, as well as set the drive mode to continuous. Using a fast enough shutter speed to stop the action can also be important. We hope this helps!

    At about 2:50 in the video, you use custom functions to set the * button to Meter/AF. Why did you do this when the AF-ON button is already set for this function? Now you have two buttons set for the same function (AF). I did change the shutter half-press to meter only, but use the AF-ON for BB AF. I then set the * button to AE-Lock (Hold)

    • @tpqueti1
      @tpqueti1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One reason could be that if you are using an battery pack, it does not come with a AF-ON button BUT it comes with a * button, making it easier to BBAF even if you are holding your camera vertically - please correct me if I'm wrong.

Even if you enjoy your picture right after shooting with one of the 5 best default picture style, after that you need working with LR, luts, zone adjustments, retouch etc, and improve your picture by 90% is happening on PC. So, really, how can you enjoy that 10% quality picture on little technical display with ugly colors in sunny day. Just check your composition, focus, clipping, and go keep shooting. You will admire after hours working only.

    I usually shoot wildlife in Av mode with AI Servo, Back button focus (* button ) on my 7DMII with 100-400 MII lens.
    When the bird start from sitting position to flying, I wanted to use register recall sotting setting while being at Av mode for my BIF shot.settings which are set in Manual mode as 1/3000 sec, f5.6, auto ISO with expanded zone autofocus points.
    In other words, when I don't have time to turn the dial to select one of the three custom settings, I can just push the AF-On button and instantly achieve the same thing on the fly. But the camera just don't allow this.
    I register the settings while in Manual and then switch to Av mode. Once the settings are registered, they show up in the Register Recall settings menu, however, once I switch back to Av mode,Tv mode I loose the settings that I registered and it is grayed out in the Register Recal menu.
    Am I misunderstanding the intent of Register Recall functions ? Is there any other way to achieve this ?

Yet I could change the setting to my liking for the sake of my JPEG preferred image in camera, and that would not affect RAW if I shoot RAW plus JPEG? Or am I wrong here. Thank you!

    what is difference in assigning Auto focus to AF on button and Star button? How do they both activate one picture and AI servo respectively while same action being assigned to both buttons?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nitin Jain Hello Nitin Jain,
      Thank you taking time to watch the tutorial. There is no difference in function if the same action is assigned to both the AF-On and the STAR button. One of the buttons can be programmed to switch between One-Shot and Ai-Servo. As an example, you can set the STAR upon to activate the AF start and then set the AF-On button to switch between the two focus drive modes. The reverse can be also done if you prefer to use the AF-On button to start focus. We hope this is helpful.

    This was a very helpful video..I am using the 5D Markiv...I have a question on the back button focus. I have always used that and I have always set the AF-on button to back button. I have now set that button and the AE-lock button to back button just has Arthur suggested but I am not sure I understand the difference. Should the AF on button be used only for tracking?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jean! In this case, Arthur set it to the AE-Lock button, likely for demonstration purposes, leaving that same function assigned to the AF-ON button like it is by default. Both would serve the same purpose here and it would be a matter of personal preference. Also, if you're using an older camera body before the AF-ON button existed, the AE-Lock button would be the one you'd assign for back-button AF in the custom functions. We hope this explanation helps!

    No question this guy knows his stuff and it's great to hear what can be created . . . . . with really expensive equipment! And that's the only problem here that I invariably come across with Photography tutorials. Some of the lenses they use are more like Bazookas or rocket launchers! Definitely four and five figure retail priced equipment. Which, I'm guessing, puts them beyond the reach of around three quarters of all enthusiastic photographers. So, PLEASE! When producing videos of this kind, PLEASE, consider the little guy with the limited budget! We all know expensive equipment gets results but not necessarily always the best. High quality images can be captured using much lesser priced Cameras and lenses. So, let's have some tutorials on 'Budget Photography' and just maybe you'll reach a far wider audience!

      Hi Lourenco,
      The presenter is using a technique called Back Button AF, which as favored by many sports and wildlife photographers. The video at the following link goes into detail on how and why one would use Back Button AF. th-cam.com/video/giYkmbm_2Ow/w-d-xo.html
      We hope this explains the feature.

    What does picture style have to do with raw files? My understanding has long been that Picture Style is only relative to the jpg rendering. So t adjusts the image shown on the LDC and it adjusts the jpg file when shooting jpg. It does not adjust the RAW.
    Is my understanding incorrect?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom. Your understanding of the application of Picture Style to the processing of JPEG images is correct. However, while a Picture Style does not directly affect a RAW image, it is appended to the image for later processing. You can change this later before it is processed, which is the great part about RAW, or you can process the RAW into a JPEG or TIFF and the set Picture Style will be applied. We hope this helps clarify things.

    • @TomHerriman

    Does the picture style effect whats being recorded as raw on canon camera's now ? I have always been under the impression that Raw is Raw and that none of these styles even B&W style has any effect on a Raw image so if you shoot Raw none of this effects you image surely it is only exposure triangle values that can effect the Raw image and not the styles at least with Sony Nikon this is the case

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tony! You are correct in that when shooting in RAW, the actual image file is unaffected. Settings aside from exposure are appended to the image file and will affect the image after it is processed. We hope this helps!

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Packer Hi, Matt!
      If all or multiple focus points are selected, then it sounds like your camera is currently set for automatic AF point selection. To select a specific point for autofocus, try turning the dial on the back of your camera to cycle through the points.
      Based on your post, we don't know which specific camera you're using, and the procedure may vary slightly depending on the model. We recommend that you check your camera's instruction manual for information on how to select AF points.
      We hope this helps!

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Packer Hello, Matt!
      The number of usable autofocus points will vary depending on the lens you're using. Since you're using a non-Canon lens, we have no information on how it will perform on a Canon body. If you have a Canon lens on hand, we recommend that you try that one to see if you have more flexibility with AF point or group selection.
      We also advise that you consult your camera's instruction manual for more information on AF groups. You'll find it on page 100 of the EOS 7D Mark II's instruction manual.
      If problems persist after using a Canon lens and checking the manual, we recommend contacting our award-winning USA-based tech support team at bit.ly/ContactCanon and we can help get this straightened out.
      Glad to help!

    also can I automate picture taking so it would tak a lot of photos while I am able to change positions for the selfies I want to take?
    I hope this make sense....literally I am by myself travelling and want to take self pictures without asking anyone to focus and take picture for me.

      Hi there.
      The best method for doing this is using the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8A. When attached to the camera, you can connect to the camera with a smartphone or tablet, then set up the shot remotely.
      Without the transmitter, you can set the camera's drive mode to Self-Timer by pressing the button and turning the Quick Control Dial. You can use either a 10-second or 2-second timer, 10-second probably being the best for what you are trying to do. Focus on an object at the same distance where you will stand, press the shutter button to start the timer, then go stand in front of the camera. Also, with the Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 attached, you can set it to take a specified number of images at specified intervals, allowing you to re-position yourself for multiple images.
      We hope this helps!

    • @TheGunny458

      because Lenscoats are used to protect the lenses as well as to provide some camouflage when shooting from a bird blind. when out in the open it doesn't matter.

      Great observation. Yes, Arthur Morris has both the AF-On and the * button set to activate the auto focus. HELP!!!!! Arthur...PLEASE help!!! Canon 100-400 ii modes questions abound and answers are cryptic. If I am using back button focus for flying birds left to right at eye level, should I: 1) use mode 3; and 2) keep the back button focus depressed constantly if set to High Speed Continuous shooting? Or a different mode or not continuously press the back button focus? No tripod in this scenario...and the bird is closest straight in front of me but further from left and further as it passed to right, light the bend of a river. Love your videos! thank you

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We aren't able to provide the exact settings that will work because they will vary regularly. However, there are specific settings that come to mind that we believe you'll need to concentrate on the most. Those include using a fast enough shutter speed to stop any action in the image caused by the bird's movement, as well as using the AI Servo AF mode for continuous autofocus to help track the bird as it moves to ensure it is in sharp focus. Exposing correctly with those in mind will take a little practice, so we recommend you arrive at the location you'll be shooting a bit early to take some test shots to help you get the settings dialed in perfectly. We hope this helps!

      +Mr M I learnt how to set up back button focus from another video and find it is of great benefit shooting birds and sports when the subject is moving. You have the back button pressed all the time the subject is moving and can take pics at any time and the subject is always in focus. ie when you press the shutter button the camera has only one thing to do and that is set the exposure and then take the picture.

      Hello Matt, The EOS 7D Mark II with either the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM or the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM will make a great combination. Both of these lenses can be used with our Extender EF 1.4x III which will still allow autofocus using the center point of the EOS 7D Mark II. The Extender EF 2X III can also be used, but autofocus is not possible due to the light loss. We hope you will find this information helpful.

      Canon is thee leading camera manufacturer in the world. Canon has always lead the way in research and new innovations in camera and lens progress. In the 70s and 80's Nikon didn't have a super telephoto. Nikon had nothing over 200mm. Canon first in programmed camera...first in 35mm slr image stabilization lenses...first camera manufacturer to make its own full frame digital 35mm slr...first custom user settable settings in slr camera...the list goes on and on. Canon continues to keep finger on pulse of pro photographers and NEW CAMERA /LENS TECHNOLOGY. That's why you Nikon boys always try to compare to Canon. Canon is the the BEST.

    A professional photographer, working for one of the biggest camera companies in the world, telling how a picture style influences your raw photo? WHAT? He should know that picture styles only mess with JPEG files and the preview on you camera screen... And Canon's director should definitely have recognised this and edited this part out.

      Three reasons - I like to review the picture I shot and enjoy it right there with the right colors and white balance rather than tweaking every damn picture in post which kills the joy.
      Sometimes like the picture I saw on the back of the camera rather than the muted lightroom preview (which removes all the adjustments) and use the camera software generated jpeg version rather than wasting time in lightroom to match that picture.
      It is not very hard and I dont see why one would not do that.

      Do you guys ever heard about color grading? Even if you enjoy your picture right after shooting with one of the 5 best default picture style, after that you need working with LR, luts, zone adjustments, retouch etc, and improve your picture by 90% is happening on PC. So, really, how can you enjoy that 10% quality picture on little technical display with ugly colors in sunny day. Just check your composition, focus, clipping, and go keep shooting. You will admire after hours working only.
