Thanks! That's actually very helpful since I plan to make more of these and have made others in the past which I've learned from and tried to incorporate the feedback here. Appreciate it!
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know of a way to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my login password. I love any help you can offer me
@Luka Ezekiel i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Ray. For the life-of-me I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong, until you pointed it out.YOU were one of the few that didn't assume we already knew to toggle the switch from camera to video. We ignorant newbies salute you.
First time shooting video with my Canon 80D. I like the step-by-step to shoot high quality video. This is an especially important occasion, so I needed all of the specific details. Thankyou!
@@RayOrtega It's for my daughter's memorial service. She passed 02/2020 but we were unable to have her service. My son, a LEO in OK, is unable to take time off to travel. So I'll be recording it the best I can on Saturday, using a battery grip for extended battery life, on a tripod. I'm glad I found your video. My brains were too fried to even BEGIN to make sense of this camera. It actually replaced a Nikon I gave my son. I was beginning to regret it til I watched your video! Wish me luck!
I just got the Canon 80D. It's a fantastic camera, especially for broadcasting. Ray, you did a wonderful job of explaining how to set-up the Canon for videos and I highly recommend watching this guy. There is a lot of misinformation on the web but Ray is well versed and has insightful tips everyone should know strating out.
Ray, you're the best! You taught me how to use my Canon 60D at its best, years ago. Now that I finally upgraded to the 80D, you taught me to use that one at its best too. I so much appreciate all your well explained informations. Thanks! ;-)
Thanks for your video. For years I used my camera only to take photos, but I never used it for video. I did not know that my camera had so many functionalities. Greetings from Spain.
Ray, flat out best video on explaining the 80D for video, and photos, because you give your settings but encourage others to find the one they most prefer. You've just taken the massive manual that I have downloaded and printed and made it pointless. Before I kill any more trees (I use recycled paper) I'll check your channel. Thanks.
Thanks, Reb. You found my secret, I just read the manual on cam lol. But seriously, outside of the stuff I've tested for myself, this is mostly manual based content. But I'm glad that many seem to enjoy consuming it this way. I know I do, so it's probably why I make these vids. Always excited to hear when it has helped someone. Thanks for watching and the kind comments.
Ray, you've helped me go from a iPhone cameraman to now I'm running two 80D's, have several pieces of glass, the H6 and even know what I'm doing half of the time. Who'd a thought I'd even know a B roll, when an A roll was stuff I never looked at again on the phone's memory card. It's opened up the world so I see both sides of the lens. I remember when I missed half the stuff I recorded because I wasn't experiencing it. Thanks again!
Thank you Ray, well thought out, to the point, no wavering around the topic and rabbit hole excursions just the real deal. I was a professional video editor for a living and I appreciated the video and your effort. Borrowing my daughters 80D want speed fast. Thanks bro. Tod in Vegas Subscribed!
really really starting to enjoy videography and doing vlogs... just upgraded from a Canon T5i to the 80D and can't wait for it to get here.. i can tell this video is going go help a lot!!! thank you side note.. if you get a chance to see any of my posts and have any corrections or information that could help please do! very new to videography/photography
Hi, Ray 👍🏻👍🏻 Awesome tutorial on setting up the 80D very knowledgeable and informative content, also I would like to know if you have ever tried to use an external monitor like the Ninja 5 or Small HD monitors I know the 80D does not have clean HDMI out but it there way to use a monitor for the 80D if possible could you do a video showing how to set up the 80D using a monitor. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great week !!! Danny
Thanks, Danny. The nice thing about the 80D vs my 60D was that I was getting the full resolution into my monitor whereas the 60D was SD and looked horrible. So if you attached a SmallHD at least the image should be a useable resolution for monitoring purposes, I tried it with an old monitor when I had the 80D in for review instagram.com/p/BER6CHck8tB/?igshid=12rmucy539rxc
This was great. Got my 80D yesterday after replacing my t6i and it was nice that you went trhough literally ALL the settings very quickly and efficiently. Thanks again! liked and subbed!
At the end you mentioned switching to TV, setting shutter to 1/50th sec. When I switch over to TV there is no longer an ability to change shutter. I want to make sure it’s at double my fps to avoid judder on panning. Why am I unable to set my shutter speed?
Thanks. I mention that those are auto modes which means the camera is going to set things for you. In the case of Canon, TV is 'shutter priority' which means the shutter will set itself so that the exposure is proper. This can be helpful when vlogging and you are not necessarily able to make changes on the fly. However I did miss speak when I said set the shutter to 50 cause of course, the camera in the case of TV is setting the shutter. So if you wanted auto and you wanted shutter to remain consistent, you could use AV which is Aperture Priority. In each case you lose something (control of a variable) but you gain proper exposure in run and gun setups.
Man! This was amazing!!!! Thank you so much...I think I’m ready to shoot my 1st video. You were clear in your directions, you talked at a pace where I could let everthing sink in, You stepped me through setting up my camera, as if you had it in your hand personally 😁. This has been the best DSLR tutorial I’ve seen on TH-cam by far....Thank you so much😊
Wow, LaShaun, thanks so much. I'm so happy that this helped so much! I'll take notes and try to make more in this style. Super helpful, thanks again for watching!
you are the best tutor, you just unpacked me me because i ddnt put the M on the mode dial while watching another tutor so it ddnt show me all options and i thought my camera is fake, but with you i have been able to find it just easy, now i should tell you that i have almost set my camera for video settings as you have done in this video, i am going to watch more and more this video until i fully understand to make my own settings. i wish you also had the canon 80D photo menu settings. i enjoyed this.
Thanks! Really appreciate the nice words. Have fun with the cam. The key is using it as much as possible. That will really allow you to learn what works well for you. Enjoy!
Thank you Ray, but do you also have a photo menu settings? I still have trouble with night scenes, they appear dark, actually this is my new camera, got it on friday so i have a lot to learn from it but please if you also have a photo menu setrings tutorial, give me the link so i can learn too. Gud luck
I don't have one for photos, sorry. I only dabble in photography on my DSLR but focus almost exclusively on video for this channel. But I bet there are some good videos here that show all the photo settings too. Thanks again, Ibrahim!
Thank you for your information on your video. It’s very well done and very easy for me to understand. I’m not a beginner and I’m certainly not an expert. I’m at Cannon calls and enthusiasts. I just this past Christmas in 2018 bought the Canon 80D with the 18 to 135 kit lens. I’ve been focusing on learning the stills aspects of shooting the camera but your video got me introduced in the settings for the video portion. One good Takeaway I took from your video specifically was being able to go in and set the shutter button in the front and the back to start and stop videos. The default setting on the rare is OK but it’s a little awkward. This is especially true when your natural muscle memory is to just press the front button with your index finger. Thanks again.
Hey man! Great video! Useful piece of info> The iso noise reduction makes pictures take twice as long to happen. The first time it takes the picture and the second time the camera takes another picture with the shutter closed to see how much noise the camera sensor is creating. Then it combines the two shots so you have a final with less noise. This isn't noticeable and is actually quite nice to have with faster shutter speeds, but if you try to take star trail pictures at night at lets say thirty second exposures, you will only get thirty seconds of exposure for every minute of the camera taking pictures with the shutter held down. Hope this is useful to someone 😊
Thank you so much for the awesome and informative video!!! You just increased my confidence in shooting quality video in manual tenfold! Keep up the great videos!
Thank you so much for this informative video. This has now become my official go to video for all my settings on my 80d. All the settings can be a bit overwhelming at first. When i have to use my camera in different situations, lighting and especially when i have to run and gun that is when it becomes a hard challenge. But it is a good way learn. Thanks for your great video.
Just found what i was searching for channel for, so video on the 80D, have to head out to work now but will be watching them later, thank you for sharing.
Hi, Ray Ortega. Thanks a lot for all your videos, particularly that one. I am an 80D user. I am facing an issue with the Lilliput 7". I can't visualise images parallelly on the LCD of my camera and the Field Monitor and same for the sound. Do you have a solution for that ? Thanks.
I’m new to this. I’m using my Canon EOS 80D for Live-streaming piano performances. I did some initial tests in manual mode and was quite happy. Then I did a livestream in the early evening and as the hour progressed the sunlight decreased. By the end of the video, you could barely see me 🤣. When you are in a situation like this where the ambient light changes markedly over time, what mode do you recommend?
Normally it would be shutter priority so that the aperture and ISO could be controlled automatically but the 80D has a weird quirk where this function was taken out of video mode but maybe they did a firmware update to include it? If so, use that otherwise you'll likely need to shoot in auto but see if there is an option to lock the ISO and maybe shutter speed
@@RayOrtega Thank you so much. I will explore. Another practical solution, if push comes to shove, is to schedule events at a time when light will be more consistent :-). Like tonight's will be at 8:30pm, so I can set things up with my led panel light and ambient lighting and have it be quite consistent.
Thank you for this video, super helpful tutorial! The question I have is when filming slow motion with the 80D, what settings should I use to shoot? Slow Motion: 60 frps + 1/120 shutter?
you know what ? I almost watched most of your videos, and im doing great with the 80D in this short period of time, i really took amazing shots and i was wondering how did i do that ?? its because of you sir, I really appreciate your work and efforts, thank you again.
Thanks a lot for this helpful videos from 60d to 80d... you are always a big help not just for me but also to others... keep it up.... Have a great day Ray.
Great info. Just bought my 80d, and I really like the video functions. Your explanation on everything is concise & dead on. Had to replay parts as I was learning my camera, but I think I got a good run down on all the video functions. Thanks again!
Thanks, Karl, glad you like the cam and you did exactly what I hope people will do, 'rewind' or pause instead of me going super slow. Really appreciate the kind feedback
I just discovered that my 80D does not stop recording at 4.2GB file size, but continues to record and making new files automatically, each about 4.17GB at the current settings I have. Sweet!
Thanks for a very clear explanation of the settings necessary for clear, sharp video. Just getting started with my 80D and this video helped greatly - Cheers!
thank you so much for this video, I've had my camera for like 4 months and i keep on getting overwhelmed by bad tutorials, but this was perfect, thank you!
One correction I'd like to make is what you said about the histogram. In the blue section no. 3 there is histogram disp. You can change it from brightness to RGB and back again and it will make no difference from the setting that is established on the screen. To actually set the histogram you have to go to the wrench (yellow) no. 3 to "button LV display options." There under "histogram" you can make changes that will actually appear on the screen.
Thanks, William. There was some definite confusion about this when I was learning this camera. I mention at 13:30 in the video that the change in the yellow tab is actually the one you'll see on the LCD screen and the blue one will affect the histogram in the review mode but I didn't make this clear in the blue tab section nor does the b-roll help me out;) Appreciate the feedback!
Actually, I missed that remark. My mistake. But Canon's mistake, IMO, is creating confusion. When you open "histogram" as an exclusive category and are given the option to choose brightness or RGB, you do so and see no effect on the screen what are you to think? Go digging through their terrible manuals? Canon is no exception here---not one camera company seems to be able to write a coherent manual or formulate a usable index---some don't even have indexes or table of contents. I have a friend who shoots video and actually writes technical instructional manuals and he told me he was appalled at the terrible material these companies publish.
thank you for taking the time doing this tutorial. next, can you show us how to shoot in low light? my videos in low light look really lousy. i get bad colors with lots of noise even in manual mode.
For low light, you'll want to keep the ISO below 1000 if possible for best results probably even lower than that which most often requires a lens with a large aperture like 2.8 or wider.
Thank you, Ray. Still capturing with the 80D, but still come back to your video...Memory lapses...Tut! Tut! Tut! It's been round the world with me, mostly with good results. So, iv'e decided, to take it with me on another 24 thousand mile...And with your help, will brush-up! As events, unlike Hollywood films, happen in a split-second, one needs to have the settings information, and manual dexterity, at a 110% in order to capture the moment...or the detailed images are lost forever! The photographic memory...Well, is not quite up to what some big screen films make it out to be...The unique "Hero. Anti-Hero. Villain characters that can flick through a complete set of the Britannica Encyclopedia, and then, recite it - word perfect! - forwards and backwards. I think, I, will admit, the CAMERA wins tripod-down, every time!!! Thanks again, Ray. Keep up the excellent, tutorials!
Thanks! And yes. I made one for the 60D and the 70D but this one is more focused on this specific menu whereas the others focus more on settings that are common to most manual cameras. So between them all you get a real good overview of shooting manual on Canon cams.
Awesome and comprehensive video. I have a few questions though that I hope you can help me out with: 1. Is there acutally any difference between choosing PAL or NTSC? In other words, will choosing one over the other have any impact on the video quality? 2. Do you ever (does it make sense to) temper with shutter speed, other than when you change FPS? 3. Do I understand it correctly that 50/60FPS in MP4 is the best for slow-motion? 4. Can you achieve a good quality slow-mo using 25FPS/30FPSMOV? 5. I spent a full day recording outside and noticed after the fact that a lot of what I got was overexposed - with lots of black-marked places on the image; plus the image was of a rather whitish color, sort of colorless. How do I best counteract that? In other words: if I take a sample shoot, and see that the image is overexposed, what do I do? 6. DO I aim for the image not to have any overexposition at all? I am sure a lot of us folks here could pick your brains when it comes the above so please, get back with answers :-) Cheers Paul
1. PAL is for Europe and there are differences. For example frame rates, scan lines and color space. Quality should be similar. 2. Ray suggests using twice the frame rate, which is usually ok. If I am in a very dark situation I use the same shutter speed as the frame rate, i.e., 1/30 sec for 30 fps. Outdoors you might want to use 1/125 or faster to control depth of field. Sometimes action sports look better with a faster shutter speed.
Forcing myself out of the nest and shooting a fashion show after a friend backed out. Never used my new 80D for anything other than stills and don't want to screw up. Basic one camera at the end of the runway look because that's what I have. Can't sync up audio so I will attempt to do it in post. So one long take, music added at the end unless the camera audio is of good quality along with stills that I will shoot before the show. I don't want to get fancy and screw up so I will just shoot it at your best option settings. 24fps etc. Any other advice? Thanks
Good luck. Make sure to white balance for the scene, get a good exposure with proper video settings like 1/50 for shutter and don't change it. Try to use your ISO as low as you can to limit the noise but you'll have to use a decent amount because the hardest part will be maintaining focus. If you open the aperture for your exposure then you're going to have a shallow DOF. You'll have to decide what you are going to focus on and set it. If you use auto, you might want to set it for the middle and line up the models there so that it tracks them down the runway. Good luck!
Great job Ray! The first 80D video I was able to watch all the way through before my ADD could distract me. Wait?! 80D... ADD. No wonder Iove this cam... oh, look... a kitty!
I was following you step by step and in the end I cant figure out how you get the mic level to remain on, on the LCD screen. When I pushed the q button my screen info was enlarged and I again cant find how to keep the recording level on, Thanks for giving us all this information
Extremely helpful for a beginner ( ME ). Thanks, Ray. And the quality of this video is superb. I want to create short films and have only one lens: 24mm 2.8 What lenses should I buy to get started? Thanks!
Thanks, Andrian. 24mm 2.8, you're set. Go start filming;) That's a great focal length on a crop sensor for getting wide enough shots in tighter places like your average apartment sized room and the rest is all about 'zooming with your feet';) That's also a large enough aperture to help out in low-light situations or to get a good shallow depth of field shot.
thanks for the great video! just a little question - when i go on to movie rec quality, I can't select to shoot in MOV because it says 'not available because of the associated function's setting - video setting'. what does this mean?
Make sure you are in Manual mode on the dial in addition to being in video mode. Also, .mov is not an option for all frame rates, so make sure you are shooting at 24 or 30fps. Let me know what worked for you
Thanks! Discos will be tough cause of flashing lights but just set your exposure for the subject you are shooting, keep it in manual mode and film. have fun!
Thanks Ray. Nice clear explanations! Can you tell us how you deal with time code for this camera? I just bought a Zoom F4 recorder and want to sync with my Canon 80D.
Thanks. I never work with timecode so I can't really say, I don't even know if you can use timecode with the cam, it might require an extra external device. Maybe check out some tutorials on timecode with DSLRs.
Hey Ray, very cool video. Can you confirm there is a 30 minute auto stop on Canon 80D? I want to record 60 minutes straight through for sit down interviews and such, is there any workaround if this is a real limitation?
Yes there is. I think Magic Lantern firmware might be able to get around it but I don't know if they have it for the 80D and of course it's not supported by Canon so it's use at your own risk. Best option is to be mindful of the time and in between a question in the interview, just start a new file. It's not very disruptive, in fact you could do it without the interviewee even knowing. That or use two cams rolling at different times and do the same thing
Love your videos. Just bought a Canon 80D. I shoot vlogs. So it it's run and gun and doesn't make sense to constantly set the exposure as I am constantly going in and out of different lighting environments. Do you have an auto exposure setting that you prefer for video? Shutter Priority? Aperture priority? Would love your feedback.
;) Nice. I actually love that for two reasons. One, you watched till the end and two, it was covered. Thanks so much for the kind words, good luck with the vlog!
Hi Ray, thanks for the video. I was following up until the Movie recording MOV/MP4. I don't have 23.98fps option, if I select MOV, the Movie Rec.Size is greyed out and set at 25fps. If I select MP4I only have the option of 25fps or 50fps. Can you advise'?
My experience is, when I set the camera to TV, in the video mode, I cannot set the shutter speed. The camera sets it automatically. In photo mode the camera acts as it should in TV mode. I just use the manual mode and set the ISO to auto, to get the same effect as TV. When I first realized that TV didn't work in video mode, I thought the camera was broken, but the manual confirmed that it would act in P mode or automatic in TV. I have a 7D Mark ii and it does work in TV in both video and photo modes.
super useful thank you. I do have one question regarding shooting slow motion. My 80D does not seem to have a setting to access 60 fps? Do I have an old model?
Nice video as always. Can't really get excited for this camera until magic lantern releases their first nightly build. No peaking, zebras or other essential stuff when filming is a deal breaker for me.
Thanks. Yeah Canon doesn't excite me much these days but they still make a solid cam especially for someone new to learn the fundamentals on my I agree, I need all those more advanced features too. I've used ML but would rather have the cam do it native, one reason I'm looking to move to Sony.
I am getting an 80D to both learn video & then to create hybrid photography, shooting clips & stills for photojournalism work. Any thoughts or comments on that type of shooting? Thanks very much Ray !
Gold! Pure gold! Ray for the most part I'm shooting myself drumming. Do you have any settings advice over and above what is presented here? Thanks in advance.
Thanks! Definitely check out some of my other DSLR specific videos such as aperture setup: th-cam.com/video/rWG1uKuV2pI/w-d-xo.html and shutter speed: th-cam.com/video/EI4bpQmtJ7E/w-d-xo.html for drumming you might want to expriement with slightly higher shutter speeds around 1/100. Personally I really like the look which I noticed in some shots here: th-cam.com/video/bw46hU6w5qA/w-d-xo.html whether they were intentional or not. The second shot in the open, 13 secs and 38 secs are all on a DSLR and it looks like the shutter is a bit higher. Cool look on the sticks.
Im having trouble finding what the white balance is to use for reference when in auto WB. I went into the info screen after I recorded a video but it just says AWB please help thanks
Hi Ray! I am using canon 80D since last year and with certainly all precautions such as 180 degree shutter rule, but still my panning jitters, what to do? Have tried most solutions but not working.
I do not have the range for movie option when picking ISO speeds on my 80D menu?! @1:42 .....mine just says ISO speed/ range for stills/ Auto range/ Min. shutter spd. ANY IDEAS?!
I think they removed Tv or shutter priority on the 80D for some lame reason if I recall which I didn't find out till after this video. I couldn't imagine why they'd do that but then again it's Canon so they like to cripple their cameras.
Thank you for posting this video! I used a 32GB 95mb/s in my Canon 70D. I erased all pictures and formatted the card and still not able to film a video for more than 5 minutes. It's recording only for 8 seconds. Please advise. Not sure what else to do. Thank you in advance!
Does your card say "Ultra" on it? If so, that's the issue. You need a different card. This would get the job done nicely and at a great price podhelp.me/Trans32UHS1_90Zon
I don't see the word Ultra. But this is the direct link from Office Depot, Lexar® microSDHC™ High-Performance UHS-1 Memory Card, 32GB Item # 380576 95Mb/s www.officedepot.com/a/products/380576/Lexar-microSDHC-High-Performance-UHS-1/?cm_mmc=PLA-_-Google-_-Cameras_Camcorders-_-380576-VQ6-155515518920-VQ16-c-VQ17-pla-VQ18-online-VQ19-380576-VQ20-271575500153-VQ21--VQ22-177839036-VQ27-35273413665&adpos=1o1&creative=155515518920&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=Cj0KEQiAh4fEBRCZhriIjLfArrQBEiQArzzDAUTKJRQ-2Lepd0kwLlqsjQ8R_ilw_uExOwY95_25HOYaAisB8P8HAQ
I checked the link you sent and it's the same style of the one I have (I sent you the link above). With the "U" symbol. I don't know what else to do Ray :(
Bummer. I haven't used the Lexar cards before. If reformatting does not work (reformat in the camera itself) than it just might be that the card won't work. Fortunately cards are cheap these days. Also, not sure why you have a "micro" SD card. This takes regular sized so perhaps the conversion is the issue.
Hello, um, my Canon 80d is unable to adjust shutter speed in Tv mode, and it is stuck at 1/30 of a second (which is too slow for video). Is there a way to fix that?
In video, shutter speed, aperture and ISO can only be manually adjusted/selected if you are in M manual mode. Any other modes are fully automatic for video. However, you could set cam to M mode, select shutter speed and aperture as you want but leave ISO in auto ISO if you prefer.
Hi Ray! Do you know why during filming the video is changing the color? I'm using a beauty ring and set it up to a warm tone and when I play the video on my computer it goes from warm to cold undertone. What could it be and what should I change in settings for the video to remain in the same undertone? Thank you in advance!
Only thing I can imagine is that the white balance is set to auto (AWB). Go to manual white balance and set it for the color temperature that you are using.
Wow! Absolutely fantastic, Ray. Thanks for putting this up it's really appreciated. I plan to get the 80D as a B-roll camera for my C100. Do you ever use ND filters and if so, what would you recommend?
Thanks! Nice combo you'll have there;) The ND filter I have podhelp.me/fadernd77 is discontinued but I love a "fader" ND because it has different levels of ND to choose from just by turning the ring. There should be others like it, I made a video about it here: th-cam.com/video/fW6YstY1pOg/w-d-xo.html A tip I can give when looking for others is to choose a size that has the largest thread, so in my case it was a 77mm which I then could adapt to any lens small than that just by purchasing cheap thread adapters.
Thanks so much for the fast reply, info and the links. The advice about getting a large ND + step rings makes perfect sense. My largest piece of glass is 77mm so I'll be getting the same one as you. Great!
Ray - with that 24-105 on the 80D, do you get the super loud autofocus sound when it shifts? I know mentioned it briefly, but mine is obnoxiously loud when the autofocus shifts.
I don't recall but probably yes. Most lenses outside of the newer STM are fairly noisy in AF. Another great reason for external audio. But if you're vlogging, an STM lens is the way to go but even then you have to find the right one. Some are completely silent while others make some noise.
Hello Ray. Great video. Been following your channel a while and you put out very informative and well planned videos. Thank you for that. I noticed you have the Sony a6500 as well and I was wondering which you'd recommend? I need a camera to record myself and 4k isn't a priority even though I might downscale to a 1080 timeline if picture quality is that much better. The convenience of the flip out screen is nice as I see you have to attach an external monitor to the a6500 when shooting yourself. My questions is regarding what you consider to be a better package. If you have to keep one and sell the other, which would it be? Thank you so much!
Thanks, Miguel. For most people I'd probably recommend a Canon. They are easier to work with and if you don't need 4K then you can save some money. I think the best deal in DSLRs right now is the SL2 amzn.to/2Jupmok it's kind of a hidden gem and is an 80D in a body with a few less features such as top LCD screen but better internally. Easy to vlog on too cause it's small but if you're 'in the studio' you can still use the flip out screen and the AF is best on the market. Of course you can get the 80D if you want a better body but the SL2 could also clear up some extra money for a nice lens
As always great video Ray..👍 I have one big problem with my Canon 80D. While recording video in .mp4 format I'm not getting 59.94 fps recording option in video format menu? Why is it so? Else everything is correct.
Hi Ray, your channel is one of the best shot and most informative ones I've found. You present clearly, concisely and with a nice friendly touch. Big thanks for that, I find others can be a little annoying, especially when their own video is overexposed or poorly framed! I would really appreciate your advice. I have been wrenched left and right by a decision on what camera to purchase. My intention is to film for documentary style journalism, travel style videos for corporate and personal projects. I'm still torn between going full camcorder like a canon ax20 or DSLR such as Canon80d. What do you think would serve me best? I suppose I want the most range of shots I can get from one camera.
Wow, thanks AJ! Choosing a camera is always tough cause you almost always have to compromise something you want. You definitely aren't going to beat the look of a DSLR just because of their large sensor and interchangeable lenses but if you need to record really long run times 30 minutes+ in a single clip, or want to plug in pro mics (XLR), or need ND filters or lots of manual control on the camera in the form of buttons instead of menu diving or a smooth aperture ring, then all of those things would push you towards a traditional ENG type camcorder. I hope that helps a little.
Should most video be shot at 1/50 shutter speed, or is that just your preference? Couldn't you also select Av (aperture priority) and let the camera select the shutter speed to match?
1/50 is the standard for film when shooting 24fps. It's really 1/48 but 1/50th is what you get on a DSLR. This is what we are most used to seeing in terms of motion blur because most movies have done it this way forever. You could let the cam decide but in that kind of setup, I like to set the shutter using shutter priority and let the cam pick aperture and ISO when you need a setup that does it for you such as a vlogging setup.
Thanks for the video and all the great explanations. When you mention in the video about the possibility setup for vlogging, you said using the TV mode with the 24fps at 1/50th sec. shutter speed. However, I couldn't figure out how to change the shutter speed for this situation. Mine is stayed at 1/30th and won't let me change it. Any ideas? Thank!
When I set it for MOV it greys out the movie rec.size and only gives me FHD 25.00P. When I tap on the Movie rec.size anyway it gives me the message Not available because of associated setting -Video system... what did I miss?
What are you trying to set it to? If you're looking for 60fps on 1080p then you need to be in MP4 format. Also you are using PAL. Use NTSC if you want 24fps
can u please explain me the exposure compensation in video mode which is given in canon 60d in 3rd menu i can never got a chance to understand that option?
Exposure comp would work if you were in some form of auto mode such as shutter priority which I like to use for vlogging. In auto modes, the camera will decide the proper exposure. Exposure comp is your chance to dial that auto setting down or up based on what you see the camera doing. Some cams will overexpose skin too much for my liking and in that case I would dial the shutter comp down a couple clicks. I talk a little about it in my a6500 vlog settings video th-cam.com/video/PcIQpkA20X4/w-d-xo.html around the 3:30 mark
Great video Ray. My question ist, why all the helpfull things like the histogram or the exposure peak are not visible while recording. Especially for the exposure it would be nice to see right away if there is something blown out and not only after having shot the take. Is that function disabled by software or aren't DSLRs generally not capable of giving that information while recording? Thanks.
Thanks for a great setup video. You're explaining everything in perfect tempo.
Thanks! That's actually very helpful since I plan to make more of these and have made others in the past which I've learned from and tried to incorporate the feedback here. Appreciate it!
100% agree. Perfect delivery.
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know of a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my login password. I love any help you can offer me
@Marley Yousef instablaster =)
Thanks, Bill. I really appreciate the kind words. Have fun with the 80D!
First time shooting video with my Canon 80D. I like the step-by-step to shoot high quality video. This is an especially important occasion, so I needed all of the specific details. Thankyou!
Congrats, Veronica, you'll improve every time you film! Glad this video helped.
@@veronicajrorrer-miller3184 Good luck and I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter!! Stay well.
@@RayOrtega Thankyou.
Thanks, Jacob!
Ray, you're the best!
You taught me how to use my Canon 60D at its best, years ago. Now that I finally upgraded to the 80D, you taught me to use that one at its best too. I so much appreciate all your well explained informations. Thanks! ;-)
6:45 for frame rates and quality. 9:14 for audio. Great video.
Thanks, Eddie.
Still a great and relevant video being 3 years old, thanks a bunch.
Thanks, TyRon, I appreciate the feedback.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! Thank you for your time and great instructions! 🙂
Thanks, Eva!
Thanks for your video. For years I used my camera only to take photos, but I never used it for video. I did not know that my camera had so many functionalities. Greetings from Spain.
That's great to hear, Alberto. Congrats and enjoy!
Great job. All settings explained in short, crisp clear terms. Thanks a lot for this. Hope to see more.
Thanks!
Everything you need to know about the 80D! Great video on settings.
Thanks, Ben!
But
seriously, outside of the stuff I've tested for myself, this is mostly
manual based content. But I'm glad that many seem to enjoy consuming it
this way. I know I do, so it's probably why I make these vids. Always
excited to hear when it has helped someone. Thanks for watching and the
kind comments.
Thanks bro. Tod in Vegas Subscribed!
really really starting to enjoy videography and doing vlogs... just upgraded from a Canon T5i to the 80D and can't wait for it to get here.. i can tell this video is going go help a lot!!! thank you
side note.. if you get a chance to see any of my posts and have any corrections or information that could help please do! very new to videography/photography
Good luck and have fun! Nice upgrade;)
Ray Ortega 👍🏻
I'm old school ENG and love this 80 much better than my 60. Great vid thank you brother!!
This was great. Got my 80D yesterday after replacing my t6i and it was nice that you went trhough literally ALL the settings very quickly and efficiently. Thanks again! liked and subbed!
Congrats on the 80D and thanks for the compliments and the sub!
@@RayOrtega it was so good😂 I had to stop, go to walmart and buy a little notebook, so I could write everything down you were saying😊
you are the best tutor, you just unpacked me me because i ddnt put the M on the mode dial while watching another tutor so it ddnt show me all options and i thought my camera is fake, but with you i have been able to find it just easy, now i should tell you that i have almost set my camera for video settings as you have done in this video, i am going to watch more and more this video until i fully understand to make my own settings. i wish you also had the canon 80D photo menu settings. i enjoyed this.
Best video on the whole of TH-cam for how to use an 80D. Just excellent 👍
Thank you for such a thorough inventory, have a nice day, and we'll wait for your videos.
Awesome, thanks!
Thanks.
Thanks. When a monitor is plugged in and you press record, you unfortunately lose the image on the LCD, it's monitor only,
I just bought an 80D and was thinking I had to find a good video for the setup. Good thing i was already subscribed to your channel!
Where did you buy yours?
Congrats. Happy shooting and thanks for the sub!
bought it at a local shop. paid a little premium, but happy to support local business and their expertise!
Yes, so when you are editing just compress it and you get it! That´s my understanding. 60 fps + 1/120 shutter speed.
you know what ? I almost watched most of your videos, and im doing great with the 80D in this short period of time, i really took amazing shots and i was wondering how did i do that ?? its because of you sir, I really appreciate your work and efforts, thank you again.
Cool, thanks Mazen!

Stellar video! Very informative about the camera and your delivery is Toastmasters perfect!!

You're welcome, thanks for watching.
thank you so much for this video, I've had my camera for like 4 months and i keep on getting overwhelmed by bad tutorials, but this was perfect, thank you!
Glad to hear it, thanks, Jenny!
Thank you for explaining all of this in a easy understandable way!
You're welcome, Chris. Thanks for watching.
One correction I'd like to make is what you said about the histogram. In the blue section no. 3 there is histogram disp. You can change it from brightness to RGB and back again and it will make no difference from the setting that is established on the screen.
To actually set the histogram you have to go to the wrench (yellow) no. 3 to "button LV display options."
There under "histogram" you can make changes that will actually appear on the screen.
I don't see why Canon has made this unnecessarily complicated. Very unCanon-like IMO. Usually Canon menus are pretty clear and straightforward.
Great video Ray , I'm just about to buy an 80D for mainly video, this is so helpful. Love your channel. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! Appreciate the support. Enjoy the 80D!
thank you for taking the time doing this tutorial.
next, can you show us how to shoot in low light? my videos in low light look really lousy. i get bad colors with lots of noise even in manual mode.
Thank you so much! Thanks to your video I can get the best out of my new 80D for shooting!
Thanks, good luck with your vids!
Bought this last night, this was the first place I stopped. Thanks!
Congrats, great cam, have fun and thanks for the sub!
Nice video Ray. Didn't you already make a video like this ?
Thanks! And yes. I made one for the 60D and the 70D but this one is more focused on this specific menu whereas the others focus more on settings that are common to most manual cameras. So between them all you get a real good overview of shooting manual on Canon cams.
Oh and I made an overall review of the 80D. That may have been what you were referring to;)
Hi Ray, thank you. Thoroughly enjoyed this class. I'm not so mad at my camera anymore. Lol...

Thanks, I have community contributions turned on and I tried enabling Spanish but I don't think it translates/transcribes automatically.
Thank you, this video was really helpful to me for setting up my new 80D
Awesome and comprehensive video. I have a few questions though that I hope you can help me out with:
I am sure a lot of us folks here could pick your brains when it comes the above so please, get back with answers :-)
Cheers
Paul

Great video packed with a ton of info, nicely done!
Thanks, Andre!
Extremely helpful for a beginner ( ME ).
Thanks, Ray. And the quality of this video is superb. I want to create short films and have only one lens: 24mm 2.8
What lenses should I buy to get started?

Thank you greatly, I appreciate it.
I thought I was gonna have to own at least three general or "must have" lenses.
Thank you for this. I cant wait to try some of the things you suggested. It really helped.

Excellent! Do you have a video specifically for aperture and ISO?
thanks for the great video! just a little question - when i go on to movie rec quality, I can't select to shoot in MOV because it says 'not available because of the associated function's setting - video setting'. what does this mean?
Make sure you are in Manual mode on the dial in addition to being in video mode. Also, .mov is not an option for all frame rates, so make sure you are shooting at 24 or 30fps. Let me know what worked for you
You are AWESOME maaaan!! But what could be a very good configuration to film in places like discos?
Thanks! Discos will be tough cause of flashing lights but just set your exposure for the subject you are shooting, keep it in manual mode and film. have fun!
which one lens is very good for Video Song recording????? in Canon 80d?
Maybe check out some tutorials on timecode with DSLRs.
ok thanks!

Haha jumped the gun! You covered that at the end of this video. Disregard.
Thanks, Ged. You're in PAL setting when you see 50fps. Go into the menu and switch to NTSC and you'll the options.
Thanks I’ve looked everywhere for this answer
TV & AV mode doesn't work in video mode in the 80D as you reported in this video. Do you know something I don't know?
Hmm, what does it not do?
My experience is, when I set the camera to TV, in the video mode, I cannot set the shutter speed. The camera sets it automatically. In photo mode the camera acts as it should in TV mode. I just use the manual mode and set the ISO to auto, to get the same effect as TV. When I first realized that TV didn't work in video mode, I thought the camera was broken, but the manual confirmed that it would act in P mode or automatic in TV. I have a 7D Mark ii and it does work in TV in both video and photo modes.
Is it okay to use full frame lenses in 80D in order to save money in the future🤔....plzzz have a video on that...
super useful thank you.
The 80D should handle both nicely. Have fun!
Very informative video for someone just picking up the 80D. Well done!
Thanks, Gus!
Gold!
Thanks for sharing. What's the settings would you recommend for filming fireworks? Thanks.
Helpful great video. Thank you.
Thanks!
Im having trouble finding what the white balance is to use for reference when in auto WB. I went into the info screen after I recorded a video but it just says AWB please help thanks
I am looking for this too. Have you found it?
Hi Ray! I am using canon 80D since last year and with certainly all precautions such as 180 degree shutter rule, but still my panning jitters, what to do? Have tried most solutions but not working.
Shoot 60fps;)
Does Lenses could be the problem? I shoot on 18-55
Not unless you have image stabilization turned on. Otherwise I don't think so.
Hey Ray, Great Video...Can you tell me what are the video options we are missing in 77D in comparison to 80D?
I do not have the range for movie option when picking ISO speeds on my 80D menu?! @1:42 .....mine just says ISO speed/ range for stills/ Auto range/ Min. shutter spd. ANY IDEAS?!
Just traded my 5DM3 for an 80D. Thanks for the informative video!
Must of wanted/needed that flip screen;) Congrats and enjoy!
Thank you so much!!! But how do you turn on TV on vid mode? I can't turn it on my 80D...
But this is the direct link from Office Depot, Lexar® microSDHC™ High-Performance UHS-1 Memory Card, 32GB Item # 380576 95Mb/s

I will buy another SD Card to see if it works. Thanks for your help Ray! I appreciate it.
Great video, would have no idea how to use my camera without it
Ray Ortega thank you so much for your response. I'll give it a try!
Your videos are always awesome. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks Brad!
Thank you so much!!

As always great video Ray..👍
I have one big problem with my Canon 80D. While recording video in .mp4 format I'm not getting 59.94 fps recording option in video format menu?
Why is it so?
Else everything is correct.
Have you checked your SD card is fast enough?
Awesome _ Informative
Thanks!
Ray Ortega Thanks for the information!
Is the 80d better then the 90d for shooting video? I see many complain about the 80d have better video options.
can u please explain me the exposure compensation in video mode which is given in canon 60d in 3rd menu i can never got a chance to understand that option?
Thanks.
