That is about THE most comprehensive common sense video i've seen on this. I had no idea my camera had so much adjustment. After watching this 2 or 3 times, i'm frankly amazed that I got the great pictures I did in Alaska back in July. Most of that was done in full auto mode for every setting, this will give me the confidence to play around with the manual settings and eventually get some better pictures
Hi Grant this is probably the best youtube video explaining in detail about the various focus modes and customisation. Keep up the good work especially for the 80D.
Great video Grant, very impressed with your "plain English " way of explaining what each function/adjustment does & why you do/don't use them. Thanks A+++
Thank you so much Grant for your informative, very clear explanation of each custom autofocus settings and how you use them for your shooting style. I was so confused with my 80D settings until I found your channel. I’m now a subscriber. Please keep up the great work.
Just purchased a secondhand 80D I am dipping my toe in the Canon water. Thanks for that it has given me a good insight into the autofocus system. I am guessing your accent is SA, if so it is a beautiful part of the world.
Thanks David, yes I am from South Africa and am lucky to spend time in wild places there as well as Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania using my Canon cameras
A really helpful video Grant - I find myself rewinding the video time and again just to make sure I've got things clear in my head! Thank you for your time, effort and for sharing your knowledge!
Just yesterday I was looking at CFN 11 autofocus and wondering what all the options mean ... and then I found your videos ....I have an 80D so found all this a great help .. many thanks for your easy to follow descriptions
Thank you Grant for your videos. I enjoy taking photos even though I’m not completely sure how to work any settings that are manual. I just bought a canon 80d and am thankful to come across your videos.
Excellent video. I was considering selling my 80d and getting a 7d II with itr.. But I'll give this a whirl and see if it's still worth keeping. Thank you again for the awesome video!
Grant your 80D tutorials are very informative and easy to follow and learn from so thank very much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us all. I would love to be able to purchase these tutorials on a DVD so I can watch them at any time and anywhere. If you are able to offer a tutorial on DVD please let me know. Thanks.
I'm enjoying your videos Grant. Keep it going! I have 5 d mk3 with 100-400 for birds (and aviation shooting) but am trying to decide between 7D mk ii and 80d for more reach. Part of the issue is that the 2nd camera will be my wife's and she will prefer the 80 d by far. So I am hoping it will do a reasonable job with its servo AF!
Hi Grant. I love your vidoes .your webpage photographs are outstanding.... I have just purchase 80d, I really do like this camera..My may interest is wildlife. I'm practsing Birds in flight very much hit and miss...I'm not sure I actaully understand at the moment Auto Focus Menu's Maybe you could do an Idiot proof sheet for this old person... I use Al Servo/Manuel select Zone. Auto ISO. I think I'm doing some not quite right at the moment... Any chance of your expert help.... Would appreciate it very much...
Hi Lorina, glad the videos are useful. About the Birds In Flight, it can be frustrating because it is not just about camera settings. However, if I am using the 80D for bird in flight photography, I will use Single AF Point (i find it locks on better), Tracking Sensitivity set to Zero or Minus 1, Ai Servo, Continuous High frame rate and perhaps Ai Servo 1st Image and 2nd Image priority set to Release and Speed respectively. But even with these settings and lots of practice, I miss many more shots than i keep. I have no idea of your experience nor where you are trying to get the birds in flight, but it is worth looking for any well known hotspots to go practice in, even if the birds are common variety. What helps just as much or even more than settings are getting close enough, having birds that are not terrified and always flying away, and learning or taking advantage of any kind of behaviour that can help you to follow them with some predictability. Like sitting beside the only waterhole in a very dry area or waiting close to where birds may fly in to a feeding station ?
@@MrElldee200 it can also help me to know what lens you normally use for birds in flight? For shutter speeds, I like to work at 1/2500second for really fast flying or moving birds like bee-eaters or flycatchers or swifts and swallows. For larger slower birds like pelicans or herons I can work at slower shutter speeds, maybe 1/1600sec or 1/1250sec. I can only use those fast shutter speeds if there is enough ambient light of course, and they represent ideal conditions. I do have a few sharp bird in flight shots at speeds as low as 1/640 sec but my keeper rate of properly sharp images improves when i use faster shutter speeds.
Hi Grant Love your videos after purchasing a Canon 80d. We are going to Kenya and Serengeti for thirteen days this weekend. As we will be travelling by land on the special safari buses do you have any tips to ensure I bring back some amazing photos please. I am quite a novice with DSLR cameras and sometimes find my photos are blurred. Many thanks Mo from UK
Perhaps put your camera into TV mode and make sure that your keep the shutter speed at least 1/500 second where enough ambient light exists. Or you could use M mode with Auto Iso and ensure that the shutter speed is between 1/500sec and upwards to 1/3200sec in bright situations. It seems to be slow shutter speed that most often cause blurry pictures. Use the Single Point focus option and place the focus point on your subjects eye or face as best as you can manage.
Great video, and awesome pictures! There is one thing that is killing me @Grant Atkinson and I can't find the answer anywhere! I am trying to get the Manual AF menu up on the live view lcd screen, but when I press the af buttons it says "This action is not available during Live View shooting". How did you enable this menu on the LCD? Thanks for any tips here!
Hi RoboYak, I am on a travel day today so cannot check exactly what you mean until tonight, although, if you are in Live View, and you press the "Q" button, that will bring up the three AF options on the rear screen. Pressing 'Info" button will cycle through other options? Let me know if that is not what you where looking for?
Hi Grant - love both of the Autofocus videos for 80D. They have really helped me set up my EOS 80D. I noticed you use a lever on the quick release plate & gimbal and being challenged with dexterity issues myself, I'd love to know what that equipment is that you use. Can you help please?
Hi Paul, the support equipment is a Slik tripod, fitted with a gimbal head made by Gimpro. www.gimprogear.com/ The model of gimbal head is called Mark 2. The earlier version had a screw type adjustment for mounting the lens plates but the Mark 2 has a locking lever, similar to those made by RRS.
Fantastic video on this subject. I am looking to replace my 700D body with either the 80D or 7DmkII. Does the 7DmkII have the same auto-focus options as the 80D that you describe in this video?
Hi Psycleracer the 7Dmk2 pretty has even more autofocus options when it comes to setup (including more button configuration customization) and an even more sophisticated AF point grid, with more grouping options to choose from.

Hello Grant firstly I think your tutorials are great appreciate the information Thank you.Yesterday I was in single point focus and tying to focus on a big Dragon fly on a large stick. Camera kept focusing on the stick instead of the insect even though the focus point was clearly on the Dragon fly which adjustments to the Auto focus would you recommend to fix this problem.
Hi Shayne, sometimes there is not enough contrast to help the autofocus point 'find' the part of the frame that you want to be 'in-focus' easily, so then i might try change my angle slightly to see if a different angle makes the dragonfly stand out more. Other things to try are to use the Single AF Point, and try use the middle one as it is most sensitive. You could also switch to One Shot Focus, and try that way. When having that kind of problem, i sometimes let the camera get focused (using a Single AF Point) on the stick, then gradually move my composition along the stick until the focus point is on the dragonfly itself, that can work if there are not other obstructions along the way
Hi Tony Lewis, so I feel it is important that I am familiar with as many of the Canon cameras that I think are relevant to the kind of shooting that I do. Cheers Grant, and let me say I really appreciate the work you put in to your instructional videos. I have learned a lot. I only asked about the 80D because I recently sold my 7D and G1X MkII and purchased the 80D as a travel camera with the EF-S 15-85 as a walk around lens. I have the 100-400L lens also and use it for birds etc. I agree the 80D seems a compromise for wildlife however having sold my G1X (compact) I wanted the smallest and lightest setup possible. So far I'm quite impressed. Cheers and thanks.
The 80D is still a pretty good choice, and you get the benefit of Canon's best APS-C image quality along with the advantages of that swivel-screen and lighter weight for walking around. It is nice to have choices :-)
To be honest Grant, I went the 80D way for all those reasons. I'm an old bloke now and my knees have seen better days so the articulating screen is a godsend. Thanks Grant for video!!!I need help with the 45 point focus its blank and I am not able to select a single focus point within the 45point as shown on your camera
For shooting and selecting the single focus point whilst looking through the viewfinder, you should press the shutter release button lightly halfway to 'wake' the camera, then press the small black button which is located right beside the shutter release button, it has a small symbol of a t-shaped grid beside it. Pressing that button will shift you through the different focus point options, one at a time.
Hey Grant, I have a Canon 80d with a 50mm 1.8 lens, every photo I take with the freehand either it comes with a blurry or shaky picture. I am really struggling to keep the objects in focus. what can be done in this scenario?
you can just touch the lcd screen to choose whatever focal point you want to use, no messing with dials, no need to maneuver around all 45 points, just touch and go
My 80d is continously focusing on an af field without pushing the af on button. I think this is an issue. I got servo ai and flex field enabled. In c1 or C2 I have to push the af button to focus. In All other Modi the 80d focuses automatically, why?
@@DJBastor so just so i fully understand. Camera being used for viewfinder autofocus, not Live View right? So I don't fully understand what is happening with your camera but on several occasions when I have seen a Canon 7D or 7D Mk2 have a problem with the focus point getting 'stuck' in the viewfinder, we solved the problem by resetting the camera. The menu option in the 80D menu is in the Yellow Menu screen "SETUP 4" and the option to choose is the third one down the menu screen "Clear All Camera Settings". If you do that you might have to set up your camera again but if it is helpful to fix a viewfinder/focus lcd problem it may be worthwhile?
