It covers the how, when and where of focusing which includes basic operation, Auto Focus Modes, and how to manage focusing squares. I also cover recomposing, as well as back button focus.

That right there is how to do a tutorial. No annoying music or time wasting fluff to start the video, clear annunciation, great content, short but informative... Nice job Michael, thanks!
You are so right --- I have given many "tutorials" a thumbs down and even blocked them on YT for exactly that crap
Finally! Someone who succinctly explained how to properly focus. Thank you, Michael!
This is the best Canon AF video I have seen. Great content.
excellent video, clear sound, no background noise, no stupid distracting music or gimmicky cross fades, etc. i watched several videos on this subject, this was the best. i'm sticking with this guy
You have no idea how much you just helped this beginner. I was getting extremely frustrated. Thank you sooo much!
Just got the 70D crash course DVD video in the mail. I have been shooting for over 8 years and I learned some fast easy ways to get the shots I was looking for from this video. He really took his notes and time to make this video and It's worth paying for and supporting people like this. Thanks again Michael
8 years on and I'm just learning the 70D now. Very helpful tips ... Thank you :)
As a new owner of a 70D and new to DSLRs in general I have to say this is the best tutorial regarding auto-focus that I have seen. In 8 minutes I now feel that I understand so much more about these settings.
Michael is a great teacher he has help me through his dvds and digital downloads. Thanks Michael
Thanks Michael, I bought the 70D and I shoot birds with a 100-400 as well as other types of shooting, and other lens. I get beautiful results. my kids also bought me your video for one of the holidays, if anyone needs more basic information that that, they need to go back to a point and shoot in my opinion.
I was getting so frustrated with my new camera thinking there was something wrong with my camera or I simply couldn't take a photo cause I was getting blurry results, Nothing was in focus!. Your video really helped me A LOT!!! Thank you!
My pleasure! :)
Got this canon dvd with the camera for my girl, ended up watching it 4 times my self, must admit there's so much info it's crazy but anyone who thinks it's a bit pricey for a tutorial you're in for a surprise, it's not just about camera, it's about everything you need to understand what it takes to shoot a great fotos, best DVD I've seen hands down.
Congrats, amazing job and looking forward to purchase more tutorials
This is one of the most awesome photography tutorials on youtube. It's really hands on
I just picked up a 70D kit......my first DSLR! I figured it was going to take me months to wade through the manual and figure out all of these settings and menus. Based on this video, I purchased your "crash course" DVD download. Thank you so much! After just one run through the video, I feel like I know this camera thoroughly now. You have a knack for showing the meat and potatoes in a clear and concise method, while not straying off the point you are making. I recommend your training videos, and will be ordering the one for Canon flash units soon!
Custom controls AF point direct selection and continuous manual AF point selection pattern - you just doubled the value of my camera! Your videos are awesome - Thank you!
This is the most effective youtube tutorial on canon auto focusing mode ! spot on ! appreciate it !
6:00 - YOU sir, are my hero. This has been driving me crazy.
Thanks a lot buddy! I've been searching the way to fix the focusing button without no result in years, but now thanks to your video I've been able to get it! appreciate it!
that customisation to change focusing points has saved my life! i was trying to figure out how to move the points because i just switched over from a nikon
probably the best explanation of how the focus works!
Good stuff Michael, I'm ordering the 70d 18-135 IS STM and your 70d crash course first thing in the morning...err...ahh... late morning cause I'm retired and taking full advantage of it. Thank you for sharing your wisdom sir.
Great video! Ready to purchase an advanced user course on the 70d when you have time to create one.
Thank you! I’m new to canon and this was a perfectly clear explanation of how to fix all of my settings without having to read hundreds of pages of manual!
Just bought our 70D yesterday and we are a bit over whelmed right now (at least I am, hubby is having fun finding out what some buttons are). Its only day one and we have a long way ahead of us to learn this sophisticated camera. Thanks for sharing your tutorial with us, I know this will help get us started in the right direction. (PS what a eye opener in how far cameras have come since we stopped using our Canon FTB all manual camera) ;-)
I'm a beginner photographer and this video was very helpful. Thanks Michael!
i dont have any camera , but i m still watching photography tutorial bcoz i want to be, and now after long time finally i understand what is ai servo.. thank you so much for this great tutorial .. really appriciate
Thank you so much for posting this video . I was so frustrated with going from a t5i to a 70d . I was reading my manual so much that all of the instructions were getting jumbled up in my brain . I am more of a monkey see monkey do type of person . I blame it on ADD . I can read something over and over and it doesn't sink in until I see it done first hand . I pretty much ruined my friends wedding photos by using my 70d without understanding how the single point focus worked on it . on my t5i it was much different . I only had 2 days with the camera before her wedding . . that was a huge mistake on my part . I should have just used my t5i and waited until later to try out my 70d . she didn't get the fabulous shots I wanted to get for her but she did get enough to have decent memories for her album . I am now your #1 fan . Thanks again .
Michael,
Thanks for the Focus crash course for the 70D Coming for a 9 pt 60D I found some of my landscapes were out of focus. will try these tips for improvement
Your youtube videos are very easy to follow and very useful. Thanks
This was great! I’m going to make a ‘cheat sheet’ outline on this. The camera user manual is so overwhelming and complicated.
Best 'how to' video presentation I've seen so far, hands down. I'm signing up!
Best text/motiongfx work out of all camera channels. Subbed!
Just order your video from Amazon cause get free shipping. Comes tomorrow. Wow you were the 1st to make a How to on the 70D. I will make a review on your DVD after i watch it all.
Wow, one of the best tips I've had since owning my 70D, and now 80D. Thanks VERY much appreciated!
Very informative video. Much better than reading from handbook.
Just purchased the 70d and really appreciate your videos. Clear and helpful. Thanks!
can you please help me
70d has any complaint?
Just bought it also and loving the camera. No complains for now
This is really helpful despite how old the video is. Thank you.
Wow thanks man, that gave me a huge help cause i hate reading the manual book.
I bought this camera few days ago and i was stressing about the focus.
Thank you.
Subscribed, great tutorial thank you. After 5 fluff videos found what I was looking for.
Extremely well produced video! Subscribed
i have 70d and this video helped me a lot understanding focus . thanks
I just got the 70D yesterday. your videos have been a great help. Easy to follow and great recommendations.
Great video!
Thanks Michael happy that I found you.
You do such a good job of explaining things in a clear and concise manner. Thank you this video is much appreciated!
Thank you very much; I have a 80D and your video is great to understand basics settings easly! Thank you and congratulations again! 👌
Great video just switched from Nikon to Canon so got to get use to Canon. 👍
I'm gonna try these things the next time I shoot.
I bought the 70D around 9 months ago but due to the season I haven't been able to test it properly until now and I've felt like screaming and crying each time I had a look at the pictures when editing... It's such a huge differens between the 70D and my old 550D when it comes to focusing and I really hope this will give me a chance to get back on track. Haven't been able to feel proud of any of my sports pictures since the purchase in august.. Keep your fingers crossed :P
Wow, I have been looking for a great tutorial on focusing. This is by far the best. Glad I found your channel.
Thank you man finally someone helping us.
Hi Michael. Thank you very much for this tutorial. I've recently switched to the 80D from the Nikon D3300. I was able to change the focusing squares with ease on the Nikon but was struggling big time with the Canon. Thank you for helping me unlock the power of the 80D 🙌
I just bought the full Canon 70d video and it's amazing! Such good value and so much in depth advice and explanations. I wasn't sure but for $38 it's a bargain to really know all your camera can do and it's helped me so much to tweak the imperfections I had. I'm currently watching it on my Apple TV with my camera in hand. Thanks Michael.
you are good. presentation was straight forward and Clear. liked it
good vid - you're clear and easy to understand. No BS !
I bought the videos about the 70D -and what an awesome way to learn! .. both so instructive! (even an old non-english guy like me makes it) -and relaxing!..:)
Beats reading books and manuals big time I think .. Good stuff!
Thanks for the tips, I just got the 70D today and it's my first DSLR. The last camera I bought was a Canon Elph SD1000 about 14 years ago. I look forward to more of your videos and learning more about the 70D
Best tutorial I have seen on this camera. Thanks Michael. You answered so many questions in such simple terms. Awsome video.
Thank you! I upgraded from the 30D and a lot of my photos have been coming out blurry. I am so happy that you helped me figure out how to manually decide what I want to focus on! Great explanation!
Dear Michael, I was recently struggling with some focusing issues and this article of yours has helped me out a lot. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing this. God Bless.
you are a wizard at being clear and concise! great tutorial!!
Excellent work Michael.
Thank you i thought this was a very good video and am sharing it with a student of mine who has a Canon 70D.
I just bought a Canon 70D... THANK YOU for sharing this video. I have been looking for something easier to understand and your video was perfect! Now I just need to figure out FLASH!
Which one do you have?
I have the Speedlite 430EXII. There's several tutorials out there but still struggling. Mainly with low light environments. I increase my ISO and it's grainy, flash makes it over exposed, etc. The struggle is real! Photography in manual mode is not as easy as some folks may think. Thanks again.
I have a speedlite crash course you might be interested in:canontrainingvideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=23
Thank you for the video! I am learning every day and hope after many practise to be a better photographer. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Very nice explanation. Can you also cover what cross type focus is?
I have had some occasional random soft focus issues with the 70D, but I have had my focus mode set at AI Focus most of the time thinking it would give me flexibility. I am going to try One Shot for a bit and see if there is a difference. I rarely use screen view for stills; may try that to after watching one of your other videos. Thanks for the insights - clear, concise, and informative.
Thank you so much for the excellent explanation on Focusing with a Canon70D. Great video and work!
Great tutorial, right pace, easy to follow. Thanks, so helpful.
This is a great video. I've had my 70d for a few months and was convinced I had a "lemon" after everything else I was reading about the camera. I had a Rebel DLSR for years (and film version before that), so definitely wasn't my fault, right? Well, after watching this video and practicing, turns out I did have a lemon--behind the camera. Thanks again for all this great information! It's really helping me to take my photography to the next level.
Quite a good explanation about using the focus options... pretty well done!
Thanks that was brilliant. Better than the manual!
I want to purchase the Rebel T5i with 18-135 lens, these Video tutorials are very informative for a new owner, keep them coming.
Thank you Michael, this helped me with my new 70d purchase.
I was looking for the how-to about the back button focus. "You'll never go back!" they say. Well looks like I really don't need that now. Thank you.
nice using for my 70D in 2022
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU SO MUCH! You explain so well and I've been having issues with focusing. Now to practice this tonight!!
Thx so much you just helped me out while i’m done searching for how to move that point directly
Wow, explained very well which I was looking for...
Thanks allot.
Hi Michael,
Your my hero I bought the 70d and there are just to many things which I didn’t (and don’t) understand. Obviously the AF was one of those things. Also thanks for the tips, great work. One thing I’m still not sure of, is how and when to use the four AF’s (AF live view/ FlexiZone’s/Quick). A tried but it didn’t do much different. I would buy your Crash Course, but I prefer it in Dutch because I am afraid that I will be lost in the technical stuff. Anyway thanks again.
THANK YOU!!!! YOU SAVED MY LIFE BUDDY HONESTLY THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! ALSO IS THAT GRETA AT 2:45???!!!!
Great video especially the part on moving the focus points. I was so used to my 40D plus the manual didn't seem to explain much that I was confused. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this video. You have answered so many questions I been trying to get figured out on my new camera. Wish I had found your video awhile ago. Now subscribed to your channel. 😁
Thanks for the video - just a caution note, that focusing and recomposing, can lead to subject soft focused or out of focus
Super helpful! Thank you! Would love to know more about back button focus.
omg thank you so much :D I have my 70d since 1 month... really helped me a lot!
I always found much difficult to move my focus point, so I almost never done it. Now, I'll be able to play a lot with them ! thank you very much ! ( how/why didn't I see this video before ??? ... )
Great video Michael!
This was great! Is your training video similar? It says for beginners but I've had my 70D for almost a year. Wondering if its going to be more of what I already know?
ITS ALWAYS GOOD TO KNOW AND TO HAVE SOME ON HAND EXPERIENCE INSTRUCTOR, LIKE YOU MICHEAL THANK YOU SO MUCH. :)
What an excellent tip. Thank you!
Hey Mike, what about some info on the different metering modes. Which works the best in different situations? Thanks much.
Just bought your 80D course, I have been shooting for 3 years but I have gaps in my knowledge, I hope the course will iron them out.
I will be very interested to know what you think! Thank you for your support!
Thanks so much for making this video. I was really struggling with my recent upgrade to the 70d. I am hoping these new settings will help.
Thanks so much for showing how to choose the AF point on the 70D directly! I switched from a 5d mark iii and canon did a few strange changes, and I really miss having a joystick, but I'll cope with it and do my best
Wonderful video Michael ! Thank you !
Thank you Michael. I really appreciate your comparison! I'm still torn a bit and that is because of Canon's touch screen. I wonder how D5300 compares to Canon 60D? Does it worth to pay extra for the built in wifi and gps? Is the 60D much better than the T5i?
I love love love your videos! I too bought the Canon 70d and was instantly hooked. I have a question - I am hoping to dabble into the world of weddings and should I have purchased a full frame camera instead? Like a 6D or 5D Mark III? Please advise me! Thank you so much!
Your are explaining very simple 👍
Great video and thank you for making so easy to understand - I don't feel like giving up today!
It does, thank you very much. Have a great day!
