    Be careful when buying a ticket for the Schnellbahn S7. I went to Vienna last week. I ticked the senior ticket as I am 66. I was told by a ticket inspector that I had the wrong ticket. I apparently should have had a Vorteilscard. Which I wouldn't have known about as it was my first visit to Vienna. I got fined 105 euros. The inspector wasn't interested that it was accidental. The only place I saw an inspector was on the journey to Vienna and at the end of my holiday back to the airport. I feel there is an element of catching the tourist here. On the way back to the airport there were 3 German speaking guys who had the wrong ticket. The inspector didn't fine them but told them to get off at the next station. Be warned. Lovely city though!

    We are leaving Vienna today. One thing I feel is left out of most of these videos is the S7 line as an add-on to any ‘all access’ tickets you may have bought. I believe if you have any 24hr + pass you can get an add on for just 2 euros one way! But you have to get it from the OBB app or machine or counter. You can’t buy even the full 4.80 S7 ticket from the WienMobil app. And the airport transfer add on the city card is way more. I had to have some help to figure out the add on/discount in the OBB app, I wouldn’t take the chance of picking the wrong discount - the OBB app is more confusing to use than the WienMobil app for tourists. But if you want the cheapest way and have already bought some kind of transport pass within Vienna I was told with the machines it is easier to use because in the right hand corner as you are purchasing your ticket there is a choice for ‘city limit’ of some kind and that will give you the correct discount.

      @@gretetheaustrianguide well - it’s probably more complicated than most people want to attempt 😁. We just ubered from the airport since there were 4 of us. It’s not too expensive compared to many other cities in Europe when it is divided between more than 2 people.

    • @gretetheaustrianguide
      @gretetheaustrianguide  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Excluded are airport buses, the Westbahn, and the City Airport Train (CAT). Within Vienna you can use all lines, such as buses, trams, underground (U-Bahn), Badner Bahn, ÖBB trains, and most regional bus lines. But take care: If you cross the city boarder you will have to pay extra for these lines (eg ÖBB & S7).

  • @WrldVoyagr
    @WrldVoyagr ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It would be helpful to highlight the further price advantage of S7/ÖBB over the CAT in that the ticket allows further connections within the Vienna zone on metro, tram and bus. For CAT you would need an additional ticket.

    • @WrldVoyagr
      @WrldVoyagr ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@М.М-х7ю Yes, if you stay within the city zone. The ticket has a time limit (I think 90 minutes). You can select your destination from the ÖBB ticket machine at the airport if you want to be absolutely sure about the price and validity.

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@М.М-х7ю Yes (albeit the price has increased to 4.40€ by now).
      A single ticket for two zones (Airport-Schwechat is the outer tariff zone, from Schwechat everything is the Vienna city zone) is valid for one trip in one direction, including changes (but not going backwards or in circles).
      You can even mix a single-trip (to get into the city) and eg. 24-hour ticket (within the city); there should be options on the ticket machines if I remember correctly. (Else: just get single ticket to "Schwechat" and an eg. 24h for the city zone.)

    Or is it better the CAT ?
    After one of the trains I must take a taxi to drive me to the hotel.

    It should be added that if you have the Wiener Linien all-day ticket (which can be purchased online or at the airport at the ÖBB desk, and which is valid on all public transport services in Vienna), a ticket for the Schnellbahn is even cheaper, less than €2, up to the first station within Vienna, Wien Kaiserebersdorf - payment for the rest of the route is included in the Wiener Linien all-day ticket.

    Hi! Thank you so much for your informative videos - they help al lot in preparing my upcoming visit to Vienna :) do I understand correctly that even if I buy a 72h ticket for Vienna for 17,10 euro, I still need to buy a separate ticket for S7 line if I need to travel from an airport. I see on a Streckenplan that the last 2 stations of S7 before a Flughafen station itself (starting from Schwechat) are marked as Eigener tarif, so I need this ticket for 4,2 euro anyway, right?

    • @gretetheaustrianguide
      @gretetheaustrianguide  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, if you have the 72-hour ticket for Vienna, you'll still need to pay for the distance between the city border and Vienna Airport. When purchasing the ticket to the airport, select the option indicating that you already have a ticket for Vienna, and the fare will be deducted from the total price.

      This is a bit complicated: The airport is outside of vienna. If you take the S7 you obviously have to pay for the full distance. If you already have a ticket or travel pass for Vienna you only have to pay for the small part of the route, that is outside of vienna. At the ticket vending machine you can select the option, that you already have a ticket for Vienna. This will reduce the price for the ticket to (or from) the airport.

    • @gretetheaustrianguide
      @gretetheaustrianguide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a booth where you can buy a SIM card in the arrival area after you exited the luggage pick up (not sure which provider, though). But mobile communication in Austria is very cheap anyways and the coverage of all big providers are very good in Vienna aswell. So you will get very good value for your money no matter which SIM card you buy. Just make sure to ask for a "Wertkarte", which means "Prepaid SIM". Alternatively you could buy your SIM card at some supermarkets like LIDL or Hofer or at a telecommunication shop in the city center. All Major Brands have Shops at Kärtnerstraße or Mariahilferstraße (which is directly in the city center). Enjoy your time in vienna!

    Hi. Thank you so much for this. Please make more like this, its very helpfull.
    Can you tell me, how to best go from hbf to the natural museum. I simply don’t get how to get the right tickets and lines. Will it make sense when we arrive? And also, is 2 hours there even enough. We are coming in by train at about 12.30, from Kufstein, and are flying from Vienna airport at 18.45, so not a lot of time unfortunately. We need to leave hbf at 17.12 I think. Then we have an hour and 15 to find he plane. We have prepaid for “pre check in”. We have 2 children with us, and I know they will love the museum, but if you have other recommendations it’ll look into that.

      Hi! I recommend to search for the connections in google maps. I think its the easiest way to navigate in Vienna. There are different connections from Hauptbahnhof to Naturhistorisches Museum. But I would probably Tram Line D, which is a direct connection.
      Also your schedule is pretty tight. I think it can work but it will probably be a bit stressful.

    Great video Grete, we are coming to Vienna in April via train from Budapest, will we be arriving at the Hauptbahnhof Wien?
    I’m pretty sure, my question is, one ticket non stop to the airport from our arrival point and do they have the same machines at Hauptbahnhof Wien? It was great to see your video at a time when I had this question, thank you 🙏

    Tank you lovely girl . I’ll arrive at 2 in Vienna airport , does BBO work ? Or the bus ?

      As far as I’ve seen, only one bus operates around the clock: the Vienna Airport Lines Bus 1 (VAL1), which connects the airport to Wien Westbahnhof train station. For more information, visit this website: www.viennaairportlines.at/en/informationen/unser-streckennetz

    Hi. Is there one app that you recommend for me to use for all transportation for the three weeks that i plan to stay or do you think ill have to use multiple apps? Thanks!

    • @gretetheaustrianguide
      @gretetheaustrianguide  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! If you only stay in Vienna, I can recommend the Wien Mobil App. In this app you can search for transportation and you can also purchase tickets for the public transport in Vienna. I also made a Video about this App. th-cam.com/video/DsUQeHBFtCA/w-d-xo.html Alternatively you could use Google Maps. Google Maps is also a good option, if you plan to travel outside of Vienna. Enjoy your time in Vienna!

    Thank you so much! very informative video and straight forward. Do you maybe have any recommendations to travel from Vienna Airport to Salzburg. I was looking into the OBB train, should I book the ticket before hand on their website? and I my flight should arrive at 9.30am and the train leaving at 10.30am, is there enough time ? Thank you!

    Why not select “exclude city fare”, then add a 3 day or weekly pass most would get anyways?

    Hi, thanks for the very nice and informative video. I have one thing that is unclear: if I buy a weekly ticket, which costs €17.10, which additional tickets do I need to buy in order to travel from Vienna Airport to the city center, and vice versa, on the first and last days of my weekly pass and how?

    • @gretetheaustrianguide
      @gretetheaustrianguide  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The weekly ticket will only be valid for the city of Vienna.The airport is a little bit outside of Vienna, so you have to buy a ticket for this part of the connection. As mentioned in the video, you can go by bus, ÖBB train or CAT train. You have to buy these tickets separately from the weekly ticket.

      @@gretetheaustrianguideHi again, so just to be sure, I have to buy a single ticket of €4.20 apart from my weekly ticket if I travel by S7. And I can buy that in WeinMobil app. Thanks.
