When I saw the last "Hobbit" in the cinema and heard this song at the credits, I cried like a baby. The Tolkien world has been such a definitive part both of my childhood and adulthood. Those stories will stay with me forever, the movies will continue to have a special place in our home and the books will probably become favourite bedtime stories to my future kids.
As long as this guy's here, Middle Earth hasn't actually gone away. We just had a brief visit, but returning is easy. You just need to know where to look. Stay strong my my fellow riders of Rohan
This version is obviously a little rougher than the studio recording, but I prefer this one BY FAR. There’s so much raw emotion in Billy’s voice and his face, I literally get goosebumps every single time I watch this. Fucking brilliant.
Absolutely. The studio version took 430 takes and was literally cut into 1000s of pieces and rearranged for the movie version. This is raw....and lovely. He has so much talent.
Over 400 "takes" in the studio and more than 9 hours straight on the final day. Nothing but respect for Billy Boyd and his singing and many other talents!
One of the most touching and meaningful arrangements I've ever heard. But it's Billy Boyd's spirit which truly makes this song what it is. There is no one else that could have brought such purity, sincerity, and authenticity to this piece.
I could listen to this on loop for the rest of my life. I don't know about others but when I realized Billy was singing this for The Hobbit was the greatest thing. The perfect voice and song to bring it all to an end. Meeting Billy a few years ago was one of the best moments of my life.
What is it like, as a musician, to know you've made a song so great, so powerful, that it's still being demanded everywhere you go? The lyrics are like the painstaking walk from a funeral, the vocals a haunting companion, the instruments echoing the sound of the heart. This is the greatest song in history. What is that like for a musician from a relatively unknown band to hear?
I love this song so much. I am a hard core Tolkien fan and this song was perfect for the end of the story. I’ve told my kids I want this song played at my funeral because I fits my life as well. Bidding a fond farewell to those friends and family who have shared in my adventures and walked with me through life. Also the line about taking the path not knowing where it goes. It’s such a beautiful image. Thank you Billy for the gift of this song.
I thought the official version was absolutely perfect, but this one is 1000 times better than the official version, so I do not know what it is - some divine revelation!
I don’t know why Hobbit trilogy got so much hate... i mean, obviously the book is a lot better... man, but the movies bring me on tears, and that means so much
some of the Story lines and production were kinda squeezed and forced, but honestly wasnt as bad as people say they are. The story was still very powerful, middle earth was still shown as great as it is.
I think because they are off a lesser wuality then the first trilogy. The thing that made lotr so beautiful is that most of it is practical, sfx make up, paintwork for backgrounds and mostly blue screen and scale models instead of the huge amount of cgi used in the hobbit. Idk I always feel like It looks more fake then the lord if the rings films. Love the story of the hobbit but the the quality of the films were a bit of a let down compared to lotr
I really liked the first one, but by the third movie they were more concerned with forced love triangles and trying to shove in characters from the original movies that they completely forgot about bilbo, the other dwarves, and the heart of the story. The production was a mess so it’s not surprising. I do love this song, it’s the best thing to come outta that last movie. Aside from the brilliance that was Martin freeman as Bilbo, the quality of the hobbit trilogy just couldn’t stand up to the other films.
I agree the hobbit was great just not as good as the LOTR!! And about the quality ya the hobbit was a lot of CGI and the original trilogy was not and actually weta workshop and everything handmade apt more time to make form scratch! The hobbit was forced time wise and did what they had to do but both were amazing and my favorite films of all time them all combined
I just love this .... I can't tell you how much I love this. Billy, you cut right at the heart. When I leave this earth (and I have to face up to my own mortality these past two years with some serious illness) this song will be my last farewell.
I saw the light fade from the sky On the wind I heard a sigh As the snowflakes cover my fallen brothers I will say this last goodbye Night is now falling So ends this day The road is now calling and I must away Over hill and under tree Through lands where never light has shone By silver streams that run down to the Sea Under cloud, beneath the stars Over snow and winter's morn I turn at last to paths that lead home And though where the road then takes me I cannot tell We came all this way But now comes the day To bid you farewell Many places I have been Many sorrows I have seen But I don't regret Nor will I forget All who took that road with me Night is now falling So ends this day The road is now calling And I must away Over hill and under tree Through lands where never light has shone By silver streams that run down to the Sea To these memories I will hold With your blessing I will go To turn at last to paths that lead home And though where the road then takes me I cannot tell We came all this way But now comes the day To bid you farewell I bid you all a very fond farewell
I got the privilege of hearing Billy Boyd sing live once. There were a lot of technical problems going on that day with the sound system, but he still performed like a champ. There is a haunting beauty to this man's voice that no recording is capable of capturing. I hope before he stops performing that technology can catch up and truly reflect everything that he is doing with is voice if for no other reason than I selfishly want to be able to hear it any time I want to hear it.
I remember hearing this the first time I saw TBOFA at the cinema. I think I was a bit shell shocked. From the combination of delight of recognising Billy's (Pippin's) voice singing, to the sudden real sadness in understanding the message "I bid you all a very fond farewell" as 'there won't be any more Middle Earth films from PJ and family'. How I wish we could all go back. I know Amazon are doing their thing, but it won't be from the people we love.
Amazon sadly took what could have been an amazing experience, and turned it into a butchered creation. Shame on them. They do not deserve to call it LoTR or anything related to the title. Nothing will ever get close to the magic and emotions the movies and books brought to life
@@InYourFace2day Very well said. Once in a while I look up PJ on the internet with the slightest hope that he's going to be doing something in Middle Earth again. But he keeps quite a low profile online and, really, it's just a fools hope.
Me again......what a peaceful tone of voice...Timeless song for the harsh times we are living! I hope everybody will feel the warmth of this song in their hearts.
Me too, this song is my favorite song of all time. I was so surprised when it appeared at the end of the Hobbit, I was bawling by the time it was over.
I got goosebumps🥺 This song was amazing, still is and will ever be! Tears are dropping the floor😅🙈 So stunning, I can't express how much I love this fandom, family and home.
Ayyyy... no puedo evitar emocionarme... los recuerdo a todos sin excepción... y sus largas travesías....LOTR una de las mejores cosas que llegaron a mi vida 🍀🍀🍀🍻🍻🍻💜
I managed to not cry in the theatres, at age 9, during all of BotFA. And then I heard this, which I immediately recognized as Pippin's voice. I couldn't stop balling. It took a lot for my parents to usher me out of the theatre that day, lol.
Saw him a week ago at the Orlando Mega Con. He sang the song at the end of a panel. Very amusing and likeable fellow. Was worth the Con price, just to meet him.
After I read all from the Simarillion, the books of the lost tales, History of Middleearth, the Hobbit and the Lord of the rings, I watched all six movies, missing the movies about the Silmarillion, all of the stories: Ainulindale, Valaquenta, Narn i Hin Hurin, Lin Leithian, The Fall of Gondolin... I listen to this song and then I'm back in Middleearth...
I am from Holland I can beatbox been a dancer all My life 3 years ago started singing father of 3 boys been a fan off lord of the rings as long as I can remember this is the only song I cAn sing with passion feel this song in My bones one of the greatest songs ever Made in my opinion
It's 3 years later and I still think this song should at least be nominated for an Oscar.
Wait what? This song didn't win an award???? That is completely ridiculous.
I agree
5 years later, and I'm too
Same
Vesna Lukic I agree.

Agree 100%. Still tears every time for movies & books! My son is 7, almost ready to start the books, I can't to share my love of Tolkien with him!

Your comment hit my heart, we’re still here just as strong, just in our hobbit holes enjoying in solace
That's actually really deep bro thank you. God bless.
Forth Erolingas !
... and u have my axe!
6 movies, 2 trilogies that will go with me to the grave. Thank you Peter J.

We may be stuck with the luck of the Irish, but we were blessed with voice of the angels.
no irish has ever disappointed me yet, and I am chilean * - *
i was there when he sang this song... easily one of the best cons i have ever attended, and made me bawl my eyes out every time ilook back on it...

Perfectly stated. I echo your feelings and this is my wish at my own final farewell. It’s a perfect song for that occasion

I just adore this tune (Mr Boyd there is no other singer who could do this beautiful song as perfectly) just wonderful, Keith Wignall,L,pool.
Billy's smile took all my anxieties away.🌸
beautiful I listen to this nightly as a part of a chorus before bedtime

Night is now falling
So ends this day

Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea
Under cloud, beneath the stars
Over snow and winter's morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell
Many places I have been
Many sorrows I have seen
But I don't regret
Nor will I forget
All who took that road with me
Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away
Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea
To these memories I will hold
With your blessing I will go
To turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell
I bid you all a very fond farewell
