They packed the local small clubs like the "Sail Inn" (maybe it was called the Albatross, but now a county library anyhow) by the ocean lagoon; at Riverside Inn,located in the then not so seedy Lower Ocean/Barson Streets neighborhood, and a place called "Steamers", in Harvey West Park area I recall. And of course, "The Catalyst." We would find out at the last minute, through the local grapevine. Some of the most awesome nightclub party music ever! This all of course from memory fogged by beer at those bars on those nights.

I live in Santa Cruz, and the rich history of Neil and The Ducks are still talked about a lot amongst the locals who were there when it happened. (I didn't move here until 1991). I used to live about a block away from the funky old house that Neil stayed in during the summer of 1977, which overlooks what was then known as Castle Beach, because there used to be an actual castle on the sand. Apparently, Neil used to ride a bike around town, and went to see Star Wars a bunch of times at the Del Mar Theater, which is still there. (I met Neil there once when they were showing the Greendale film). Some of the places The Ducks played no longer exist. The Old Sash Mill is gone, and one of the bars eventually turned into a public library near the Pleasure Point section of town. The Catalyst still exists, of course, but it's a shell of its former self. The only music they have there now is hip-hop, death metal, and electronica. If you ask the people that work there now about Neil, they look at you like they have no clue what you're talking about. Sad, but true. I saw Neil & The MG's at the Civic in 1993, but I can only imagine how cool it would have been to see The Ducks there back in that great summer of '77. I'm envious of those who were lucky enough to be there.
As a local santa cruzsan you couldn't help but bump into them playing somewhere. I took photos of when they played in Salinas. Because I wasn't using a flash on my camera Neil bent down and gave my a great shot of he's face.
I've been listening to this medley for years in terrible sound quality from a multi-gen cassette recording that I traded for in 1996. I love hearing this in close to source form. Thanks for posting.
Jeff Blackburn, Johnny Craviotto "C" , Bob Mosley and some tall lanky guy from up the coast...and then the Ducks flew away..never to be felt again..... Where are those magic tapes ????????
Yeah , I remember playing at the ALBATROSS , a girl comes up on stage , and says to me - ME, YOU , SEX ON THE BEACH NOW!!! that doesn't happen much any more in Santa Cruz, at least for me.

The Ducks tapes I've heard are great. Wonderful songs and Neil really cuts loose on Old Black!
What an incredible story. And time. Playing small night clubs? Incredible.
