  • This has always been a favored Neil Young bootleg. Songs here include:
    Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
    Wonderin
    Sugar Mountain
    (along with snippets of other songs, some that will sound familiar to hard-core Neil fans)
    Recorded at KQED Studio, San Fran, CA 1970 (that said, there's been debate if this show was actually recorded at KQED Studio, some think it may have been recorded outside, but, who knows?)
    According to Pete Long's Ghosts on the Road, the full setlist is the following:
    Neil Young
    KQED Studio
    San Francisco, CA, February 19, 1970
    1. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
    2. Everybody's Alone
    3. Dance Dance Dance
    4. On The Way Home
    5. Wonderin #1
    6. Wonderin #2 Instrumental Noodling including
    - Out On The Weekend
    I - Don't Want To Talk About It
    - Helpless
    - Country Girl
    - Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It
    7. Sugar Mountain
    notes: according to Ghosts On The Road - thanks Pete
    date and venue for this still remains unconfirmed
    What is Ghosts On The Road?
    Well, it's the ultimate Neil Young concert setlist archive...
    www.ghostsonthe...
    The first edition of Ghosts On The Road was published in 1996 and immediately became recognised as a valuable resource for Neil Young enthusiasts worldwide. The updated and revised edition will be published in early 2007 and will contain additional chapters relating to the years 1996 through to 2006 together with considerable expansion of many previous chapters. Author Pete Long has spent a good deal of time revising particular sections of the book and his work on the Buffalo Springfield box set and an article in the NYAS magazine Broken Arrow regarding the Time Fades Away tour in 1973 bear testimony to the expansion.
    The author says "I could only justify offering a revised version if it contained sufficient extra information. I did not want anyone, particularly those who already had a copy of the first edition, to feel that they were not getting a significantly improved book."
    With over 520 pages (the first edition ran to 282) the book has a number of additional features. While the basic layout and style remain unchanged there are now areas included for nearly all shows performed post 1969. Virtually all missing or incomplete set lists from 1983 onwards have been completed although we would love to hear from anyone who has information related to a number of items listed below. In addition song charts for all the major tours have been included as appendices.

Neil was the beginning of a journey and awakening that changed my life. i now live in a place called loveland colorado, i have a wife and 2 kids living my own american farmers dream. yes im still hear with Neil along side while im walking my or rollin my joint.

      You were raised well, I can tell. Give your parents a spiritual hug from me, I've been playing Neil Young songs on the guitar for 46 years now and I will until I take my last breath.
      Enjoy your magical mystery musical ride with this Prodigy of a man, a music humanity gift crossing two centuries and still going strong.
      👏🏻Keep on rocking in the unfree world little man, there's nothing like Neil Young to keep a soul young with song.

    I saw him in Stratford Conn. solo no band in 1968 at the Filmore East twice with Crazy Horse at Woodstock with CS&N and then at Carnegie Hall in 1975ish. Every time he was fantastic and the Carnegie Hall show was beyond unbelievable. I love Neil Young he's up their with Dylan and the Beatles for me.

    Thanks for these recordings in 1970. Your retrospective photos of Neil thoroughout his career were awesome too. These were "raw recordings" showing the scope of Neil's talent shortly after "The Buffalo Springfield" years. I caught Neil singing "Do I Have To Come Right Out and Say It". He probably should have sang the lead to that song in 1966. Richie Furay did a great version too. In the early years, Neil's unique voice was untapped.

    Been a Neil Young fan since I first heard the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere back in 69 or 70 too long ago to remember. Love all of his music. Some of it I can't Listen to anymore since it saddens me too much. He's a poet whose words touch our very souls. Harvest Moon is one of those that I have a hard time listening to all the way through,reminds me too much of the way my life used to be.

    I'm reading Neil's Biography "Shakey" by Jimmy McDonough. Jimmy did 50 hours of interviews with Neil and they are copiously reproduced, Neil is uncompromising and tough minded about his vision, and we are lucky he is, the Corporate Music Machine and Money destroyed many lesser individuals, but Neil never bends or strays from his Art; we are the lucky recipients!

    APRIL 1969 (51 YEARS AGO)
    Neil Young: "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" b/w "The Emperor Of Wyoming" (Reprise 0819) 45 single is released in the US.
    Written by Neil Young from the album of the same name and backed by Crazy Horse.
    __________
    SONGFACTS
    Despite bearing the same title as the album it appears on, "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" wasn't generally considered one of the standout songs from Neil Young's second solo effort. "Cinnamon Girl," "Down By The River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" all were more popular and enduring.
    Still, "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" is an interesting song in its own right, and even more so when viewed as part of Young's broader catalog. It's also intriguing to ponder why Young chose to name the album after this particular tune.
    Young was living in southern California when he wrote this song. That's the environment he's describing with its "day-to-day running around" that he needs to escape. Young's conflicted relationship with the entertainment industry has marked his entire career, and it's seen even here at this early stage.
    While Young laments the hectic Los Angeles pace, he assures us that despite all the allure, nothing worthwhile is to be found there. As Jimmy McDonough wrote in Shakey, "'Everybody seems to wonder what it's like down here,' Young muses, his caustic tone making it clear that for him, the entire Los Angeles scene might as well fall into the sea."
    +++++
    In Young's previous album, he was already yearning for the simplicity of the countryside with "Here We Are In The Years." Those feelings have carried over here, and in fact, continue to carry over throughout Young's career.
    At the same time Young's feeling that the life he's living is leading nowhere, friends, and family back home are fascinated with the scene he's in. "Everybody seems to wonder," Young sings, "what it's like down here." The choice of "down" is telling, because it confirms Young's talking about his people back home in Canada, with Los Angeles being south of (or "down" from) Canada. That confirmation is nice but not necessary because the content of the rest of the song makes it easy to infer.
    +++++
    The LA lifestyle has lost its shine for Young in this song, and all he wants is to "take it easy" back home where it's "cool and breezy." This romanticized version of home contrasts with the version seen in "Helpless," which was released less than a year later with Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young.
    In "Helpless" we see a place that is rather melancholy, even while Young still views it as a sort of sanctuary. We get none of that in "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere," where things are idyllic and perfect for relaxing and "just passing time." The song itself has a country-like aura about it. It sounds like a song that'd be played on the front porch of a country house in Young's childhood town of Omemee, Ontario.
    The fact that young named the album and this song the same suggests that the sentiments expressed in this tune are part of the album's theme.
    +++++
    The song's lead vocal track wasn't originally meant to be released: It was a scratch vocal sung through a low-quality talkback microphone on a mixing board. Young liked the way the sound contrasted with the rest of the songs on the album and decided to use it in the final product.
    +++++
    At 2 minutes and 26 seconds long, this is the shortest track on Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

    Interesting comment by Neil how he loved Danny Whitten’s song, “I Don’t Want To Talk About It,” but Danny never wanted to play it. I wish Neil would have played it live or recorded it. Just that little snippet he did sounded great. One of my favorite songs made popular by Rod Stewart.

      Sound8Vision not sure if any additional songs from this show are out there in the public. There’s always been a question as to location & date of what I’ve posted here. Regardless, it’s a very unique live Neil experience!

    "What would Neil Young do?"? Wonder why the bar stool in the studio suddenly became empty.
