  • Were back in the North Island and our first trip away was for one of my favorite rocks, Obsidian. Just off a quiet bay on the shores of Lake Taupo is the Ben Lomond volcanic dome Ben which was formed about
100,000 years ago. The Fe2O3 concentration in the Mahogany Obsidian is the same in both of the black and grey varieties, indicating that the red colour is not due to higher iron content but to the oxidation state of the iron. (Fe2O3 is the chemical formula for ferric oxide, also known as magnetite)
I love working obsidian and have made many pendants and bowls from it. At the end of the video I have included a short clip of some of my current work.

      Yes it does.
After my accident it was rock carving that helped in my recovery and got my brain working again as I shaped and polished the rocks.

20:28 almost looks like there's some fire or color in that shinier piece in the middle. That sure would be something. Really cool. Thank you. I really enjoyed this video & learning about NZ obsidian.

Thanks for watching, good spotting. I had a look and yes it does appear so but I think it is just the reflection off the red brick wall of our house

    Great video.
I've carved a few pieces of obsidian and really like it.
I've been after a large clean piece to carve a bowl.

There are only a handful of locations where obsidian is found here mostly around the Taupo Volcanic Zone and a location in Northland. It was a traded commodity in days gone by

The volcanics of the North Island are pretty cool and I do enjoy them just as much as the South Island rocks we recently discovered

Yes it is a private farm, club access only and is only open every couple of years for the club. One of the benefits of belonging to a local rock club

We ended up going through 3 loan cars over 6 weeks before we got ours back from the shop, the second one sold so we were given another to use. It wasn't until I washed those pieces that I saw the spirulites, pretty happy with them

Hi Gordon, firstly congrats on your 1000 subscribers. I think i met you in the stationary shop when it was in Kawerau. I have been loving your videos. We are going on a road trip next year to the south island and have been eagerly scouring your videos to find all the good spots. I didnt know there was a rock club here. How do you go about joining. I have been collecting shells and pebbles all my life. Only off Northland beaches and Ohope so far. Didnt really know much about them. Have learnt so much fyom you. Thank you. Its just made our road trip so much more exciting!

The rock club is in Tauranga google
      Tauranga Gem and Mineral Club.
You will love the South Island

The roadcut on Poihipi Rd has been thrashed by people taking literally ute loads of if to sell on Facebook marketplace. Last time I had a look there there was only small pieces to be found. The other place where one can occasionally find good pieces is at Kinloch beach go to the right towards the cliffs it also gets washed down the streams there.
