- Last day of our South Island trip due to a ferry cancelation meant that we were under the gun to find that elusive Pounamu before time runs out.
Serpentine Beach lived up to its name with truck loads of the green stone littering the beach.

My mum was born and raised in Hokitia. All her gorgeous siblings also. She is the last one standing and loves being back home over looking beautiful Hokitia 😍
Super Good ! great video my friend. see you
Love the calm manner of your dialogue, it makes for easy listening, and thanks so much for the education - may get to some of those places one day too.
my auntie and uncle were prolific greenstone hunters in the 50's 60's and 70's around the Hoki and Marsden area. ive got photos of them with giant boulders of greenstone being wieghed up in Hokitika that they found . I donated them to the Hokitika museum 2012
Thankyou for sharing your interesting trips
Have enjoyed your series! Testing the specific gravity would be really educational.
Thanks I've enjoyed making them, and yes I'll do a short video on testing specific gravity, it's really easy to do.
Such a beautiful place we live in.New Zealand 🇳🇿
Thanks Josh for your ❤️ 💙. Stay safe& thanks so much for being so awesome 👌 👏 👍
I've found some amazing pounamu in various places near hokitika. if its grainy, it green quartz. most of what you found was serpentine. Take a knife. if you can cut the stone, its not nephrite jade. traditionally you rub it on your face to get some oil on it to check it out.
Really enjoyed all of these videos.
Shame that the ferry changed your plans.
You found some nice pieces, and beautiful results
We were thankful to get a ferry crossing when we did as so many had up to a month to wait until the next available booking.
@@NewZealandRocksDownunder yes it was quite a mission to get ferries with all the cancellations.
I can't wait to go back.
Great video. Great to see bits of Hokitika again. Haven't been over there for years but, spent a large part of my childhood in Stillwater and a trip to Hokitika was always a big day out and super exciting. The magnet bit was really interesting, l had no idea pounamu was magnetic. Would love to see a specific gravity test too.
I can't wait to go back such a beautiful place. I have done a specific gravity test here is the link

@@NewZealandRocksDownunder Brilliant. Thanks. Will check it out.
I hope you find some greenstone next time and get to see your son. Are they still slashing tyres?? I'll make sure I don't stop there!! 😂
Amazing video!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching!
😯 just a giant green stone plopped down on the sidewalk. I love it!
They certainly were impressive and felt soooo nice to touch
Beautiful video guy's ❤
Just a heads up, New Zealand Nephrite ranges from around 2.94 - 3.05 specific gravity. If you were getting 8, something is drastically wrong. Serpentine should be around 2.6. Semi nephrite may be up around 2.8-2.9. I’d suggest having another go at the testing 👍
You are correct 2.8 is what I meant my recall memory is not that great at times since my head injury. It was the 8 I remembered.
Thats a great beach to walk. Loads of serpentinite, and lots of other green rocks, which can make it a bit confusing. There are green jaspers, schist and even green quartz. I live just up pastGreymouth at Rapahoe and find the odd bit of pounamu here too.
I like watching Gold Pan Vids, you need rock cutters for greenstone backup. I thought about printing Tshirts in 2002 for a Winz Business Grant,
I like gold panning vids also but that is one addiction I don't need, rockhounding is bad enough lol
Can you show us the gravity test please? I have some stones i collected and im now confused after watching your video! Urs look just like pounamu!
I've done a specific gravity test video

Hope this helps as a lot of serpentine looks like nephrite jade but isn't
That was all serp including the big rock on the street
Almost, the fountain is Pounamu Greenstone. Love how the serpentine polishes up.
@@NewZealandRocksDownunder true didnt see that bit of the video, i can get you on to some good spots
@@ReaganTalijancich Thank you for the kind offer, though I'm unsure of when I'll be back down that way
Do yu watch Dan Hurd vids in Canada?
Nearly every episode
Weeellll Wellcome , such a great personality .
Thanks for sharing. I'm coming over from Perth to the NZ West Coast and promised my daughter I'd find her a piece of NZ Greenstone. Is anyone allowed on that beach? Thankyou
The beaches on the West Coast of the South Island are free for anyone to fossick. Good hunting. Some of the Greenstone shops have beach finds on display to give an idea of what to look for, some will identify your finds if one asks nicely.
@@NewZealandRocksDownunder Kia Ora bro. Thanks so much for your help. Can't wait to get there next month
Its a shame you couldn't spend more time with your son but lucky you could get back over!
It was a real concern the whole trip that the ferry would be cancelled as it kept breaking down stranding thousands of people and vehicles. When we were offered the earlier booking we snapped it up.
What you can carry out is the law,
locals should respect that,
i thought it applied to river beds?
i have only been to Burnham, n Tekapo for the bang bang Hobby, in 1981,
If they don't want you to stop why would they slash your tyres? Sounds kinda... moronic.
I guess putting up with decades of people stealing your stuff some may be a bit upset with it apparently continuing. I mostly certainly do not condone that extreme action but do understand
Hard to understand much the native dialect, something about looking for punani?
It's Pounamu, NZ's Greenstone.
I think you are trying to interpret the word Pounamu (Poe nah moo) the Maori indigenous word for a selection of green coloured rocks that include nephrite jade, bowenite, and serpentines
Dont ask about Custard Squares,
@@greggiles7309😂😂😂
Only Ngai Tahu are allowed to take Pounamu from rivers. And no one is allowed to remove large pounamu . It's law and it's ethical
Isn't that what I said?
@@Smitty55888 that hasn't been the case since the late 70s it's the conditions for the treaty settlement. If you follow the news a couple of guys have just been convicted of stealing Pounamu
