My Rockhounding Experiences in New Zealand
I live in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, and have to travel to other areas for older rocks that contain interesting specimens. You can expect to accompany me as I find interesting rocks, fossils, and uncover some of the interesting insect life here in New Zealand.
Look out for my attempts at cutting and carving the rocks that I have found as I get the gear together to do it.
I own a local retail business, well my wife is the boss, originally in Kawerau for 19 years now we have relocated to Edgecumbe after our building sold, We have been in business and been serving our local community since 2003.
A head injury resulted in my Motorcycle Training School of 13 years being closed down in October 2020. Our retail shop has a great selection of crystals and gemstones that fuels this passion to fossick, which is squeezed in whenever I can, going AWOL without getting in too much trouble with the Mrs.

Goldminers Rejects Acid Cleaned

We were invited to explore a hidden Gold Mine near Kuaotunu in the Coromandel New Zealand. Researching the history of this mine unearthed some interesting facts like the rock holding the quartz reef is actually Greywacke a sedimentary rock rather than the volcanic rock normally associated with gold. We found a small amount of quartz in the form of a pseudomorph in this case it is quartz after c...

Pleistocene Fossils Matata NZ Day 2

Another stream and more fossils. My initial plan to access the stream proved a bit unworkable as was plan B, finally easy access from the beach opened up a bonanza of Pleistocene-aged shells with some pretty cool concretions hiding their prize until broken open. There was no need to venture very far upstream, but that would be for another day. #thefinders #rockhound #pleistocene #fossils #matat...

Cut Bigger Rocks with a 18 Inch Rock Saw
มุมมอง 3996 หลายเดือนก่อน
I finally purchased an oil bath 18" rock saw, and now I can cut bigger rocks. The first mod I did was to replace the drain tap with a valve as the tap kept blocking up with the sludge when emptying it, I empty it after each session due to a number of little leaks. I've cut a fair bit of rock as you do with a new saw and love the way that I can get consistent thin parallel slabs with each cut. I...

WoW! That’s Incredibly Awesome! I Loved it! 🤩❤️✨
Thanks for watching, yes an amazing fair
Beautiful work
Thank you
I just came across your video on my main feed (I like rocks 😊), I painted the whale mural in Riverton! It made my day seeing it pop up in your video! ❤
Thanks for watching, you are so talented that whale is amazing I just had to video it.
@@NewZealandRocksDownunder aw thank you so much! I've painted in Bluff and Invercargill too. I'll be heading back down from the Bay of Islands to Invercargill this November for another! Great video! Keep it up 😊
I've found some amazing pounamu in various places near hokitika. if its grainy, it green quartz. most of what you found was serpentine. Take a knife. if you can cut the stone, its not nephrite jade. traditionally you rub it on your face to get some oil on it to check it out.
Was so happy when the music stipped nni could hear ya but rhen it came back again 😅... Ty for ur knowledge tho ❤
I think I get better with the sound as I make more videos, thanks for watching
I hope you find some greenstone next time and get to see your son. Are they still slashing tyres?? I'll make sure I don't stop there!! 😂
On my bucket list!! I found some beautiful coloured stones on the beach near westport and took them home on the plane with me but they were stolen from my backyard. A guy showed me a pathway he'd made out of tons of coloured stones. 😊
That's not good so sad having things stolen
@@NewZealandRocksDownunder I need to go back for more. I've just bought a little vintage caravan so hopefully I'll get back to the south island 😁
Thankyou for sharing your interesting trips
So glad I stumbled across this, I really enjoyed it and have subscribed so I can learn more. I'm always picking up rocks 😅 I just like them. I went to Gem stone Beach a few years ago but alas it was a howling Southerly, 2 box trucks were blown over heading out to Bluff so yeah far from hospitable 😂😂😂 Maybe I'll get back down there one-day when I have a few days to while away. In the mean time I'm busy walking the Northern West coast beaches with my faithful hound 😊
Did you bring some midnight lace obsidian and tiger tail back over? Ill purchase some
Only had so much room lol. Unfortunately not this trip
Wow Some beautiful minerals over in aussie. So jealous lol
That Tiger Tail... gorgeous ❤❤❤
That Tiger Tail... gorgeous ❤❤❤
❤❤❤
Thank you for showing us around. I hope you had an allowance for the excess baggage cost!.
Heaps of allowance purchased 40kg weight for the bags, ended up with several KG's spare
Where are all the stones I have never seen sand on that part before, it was thick with stones. We pick up the very wax stones
thanks for a great video - I learned a lot. Also loved the soundtrack - who is it please?
Thanks for watching, the soundtrack is a royalty free track from the Filmora Wondershare video editor that I use. "Violin and acoustic guitar chill time"
That was all serp including the big rock on the street
Almost, the fountain is Pounamu Greenstone. Love how the serpentine polishes up.
@@NewZealandRocksDownunder true didnt see that bit of the video, i can get you on to some good spots
@@Ray00gun Thank you for the kind offer, though I'm unsure of when I'll be back down that way
🌻
The carpark above the beech is on top of an old landfill. It is slowly eroding back towards the road and I have found some cool stuff scratching around in there
Thanks that is interesting to know, find any old bottles there?
Hi up by Cheviot on the coast ,would be good to get ur information on those fossils, .and how they where formed my guess a lot later .
Great content
Wow that place is amazing! Thats the worlds coolest rock garden!
What a Zen jewel to visit. Blows away any museam visit.
As a Kiwi whanau living in the Gold Coast, it warms my heart to see you both here finding treasures. I enjoy your adventures. Great content. Your wife is a gem too on your travels. 😊
Glad you enjoy our content, I certainly could not do this without her she sure is a gem for sure
Pleased I found this. We lived in Orepuki late 50’s to 70’s. Special place, tho a tad chilly.🤗
Thanks for the post from kerikeri very interesting i would like to beachcomb there oneday cheers
Great finds!
I would be looking at the driftwood too. It's a very satisfying pass time and nature always has a gift or two for those who are looking. The rivers offer brilliant stones and rocks also. Expressing your gratitude aloud will always be rewarded.
Love the colour mix, soft stone to tumble too.
Takes a very nice polish, the stone is a lot more pinkish than shown.
I heard the little gold mining shanty town was named 'Canton' and was a bit of a wild west. It was on the other side of the road more towards Monkey island. Thank you for putting this up for bringing back memories of living in Southland.
Canton was the largest Chinese town in NZ, it was at Round Hill.
Thanks Gordon great clip 👍, I've been doing not the correct way so long I've worn out the motor 😂
Nice fella!!!!
Is that a normal angle grinder? Where can you buy the pads
The grinder is a variable speed polisher from Bunnings and one can purchase the diamond pads from any of the online platforms like Trade Me here in NZ or eBay etc
I really like the polished & then un polished pieces.Being able to see the complete difference is fantastic
Love your hat Love your attitude & most of all love your videos.
Love your choice of a energy food at that very moment.I would have done the exact same thing for my pick up food snack 😋
O my goodness I am so jealous right now❤
My Grandparents lived at Orepuki. Grandad was a farmer and gold miner. Spent many hours fossicking at Gemstone Beach as a kid in the 1950’s and ‘60’s … not so many people back then! I always go back for a look when I’m in the south, you never know what you might find. Not telling where the Ruby sand deposit is though! JohnnyZ
I sure is a special place
I believe they still prospěch in the iron sand on the beach.
Love your second worm rock!!!!It looked special
Soooooooooo happy you found such a awesome worm rock hunny.
Thanks Josh for your ❤️ 💙. Stay safe& thanks so much for being so awesome 👌 👏 👍
Such a beautiful place we live in.New Zealand 🇳🇿
My mum was born and raised in Hokitia. All her gorgeous siblings also. She is the last one standing and loves being back home over looking beautiful Hokitia 😍
Beautiful video guy's ❤
Great content Man, thanks, makes this North Islander even more keen to see the Mainland. cheers
We drive on the left hand side of the road. Which means the drver is closer to the centre line & the front passenger is closer to the curb. The filming is from the passenger side. 🤗
Correct I can no longer drive due to a traumatic brain injury so the filming is from the passenger seat
Only Ngai Tahu are allowed to take Pounamu from rivers. And no one is allowed to remove large pounamu . It's law and it's ethical
Isn't that what I said?
@@paulleary8594 that hasn't been the case since the late 70s it's the conditions for the treaty settlement. If you follow the news a couple of guys have just been convicted of stealing Pounamu
Good on ya mate, it was a very informative and interesting video. I hope you had a great time....
Every day out is a great time, I take the opportunities when I can. Thanks for watching I appreciate your time taken to view this
Thats a great beach to walk. Loads of serpentinite, and lots of other green rocks, which can make it a bit confusing. There are green jaspers, schist and even green quartz. I live just up pastGreymouth at Rapahoe and find the odd bit of pounamu here too.
