  • I take the train to Lostwithiel and walk beside the River Fowey alongside the former passenger line to the town of Fowey in Cornwall.

    Nice video Paul, but I think you need to issue a correction about what you said at 4:14

      Ah, yes, well spotted! 👍I guess you mean it is not Diamond then? Sorry, I haven't watched any of the Jubilee celebrations, or attended anything. Is it Gold or Platinum? Why can't they just use the number of the years as a royal leader. Thanks for watching and commenting. It is much appreciated. Cheers, Paul 🙂

      I have pinned your comment to add as a correction - perhaps someone can clarify the type of metal that equates to the number of years as a Queen? Thanks again, Paul 🙂👍

      @@westcountrywanderings I didn't notice and would have probably made the same mistake as you Paul ! We didn't have any celebrations in our village here in North Wales and didn't watch anything on TV. We knew there was a Jubillee though :) Thanks again for this 👍

      Thank you Faith! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the medieval bridge crossing the River Fowey in Lostwithiel is beautiful isn't it? Amazing to think that it has survived all those years.

    Hello Paul - greetings from Poland.
    That was a most enjoyable walk. The amble through Lostwithiel, and the photographs you took was superb. Coulson Park and the riverside walk were lovely. The historical and factual information about the Fowey Branch Line was very interesting. And that gigantic viaduct - Wow! Your video was superb with a lovely commentary to go with it. Thanks Nicole for your help and assistance.

    Beautiful section of Cornwall Paul, the viaduct looked interesting and that old medieval bridge looked pretty cool too, stunning country park 😊

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Stephen and Yhana. Yes, I think it has just celebrated its first year of existence - replacing an older iron bridge, which had become rusty. The medieval bridge is indeed a rare survivor - mainly 11th Cent, but with some arches added later. Yes the park (and nature reserve - of which I was previously unaware) is a lovely setting by the river. Thanks for watching and commenting, take care, Paul 👍🙂

      Thank you, yes, I thought that too. All of the tracks by the former Fowey platform have now been removed too since my last visit - maybe less China Clay traffic nowadays? Lovely new Fowey Viaduct thought - thought it looked smart! Thank you for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul 🙂👍

    I had absolutely no knowledge
    about the medieval bridge
    A rare survivor indeed
    This forgotten corner of Cornwall
    features prominently in the novels
    of Daphne Du Maurier who lived nearby

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Stephen - indeed it does! Daphne lived in four houses around the Fowey area at various times. 'The House on the Strand' (set in Twyardreath near Par) and 'Jamaica Inn' are two of my all time favourite books. It remains one of my favourite places in Cornwall (along with the Roseland Peninsula and The Lizard). Thank you so much for watching and commenting. 👍🙂 Take care, Paul

    A passenger train did run between Lostwithiel and Fowey on that one line certainly in the early 1960's and so I presume in the '50's and before. It was a small steam engine train with, if I remember correctly, only one or two passenger cars. It pulled there from Lostwithiel and it pushed back as there was no turn turntable at either end. As a child I made the journey several times, passing through Golant which is about half way. I also walked from Lostwithiel to Fowey and back using the track, which runs by the river. Wonderful days.

      That's a lovely memory to cherish! Thank you for sharing this. I seem to remember that GWR's (the current one, not the original) predecesors (possibly First Great Western, or Wales & West Trains) ran some specials at the end of 1990s, and early into this century from Lostwithiel to Fowey, when there was speculation that the line could reopen. The trains were massively over subscribed (you had to book in advance). The track is used by (almost) daily china clay trains to the port, and I think that they (the china clay company) objected to the line reopening for passengers. Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers, Paul.

      @@westcountrywanderings I didn't want to write too much, but My brother and I rode in the cab a couple of times...on the plate, in the engine where the fire was stoked and fed by the fireman alongside the engine driver. No doubt they were not supposed to have us, but they did, and we were thrilled. Lostwithiel really was a very sleepy little town in the winter but, of course, was packed with through traffic from 'Furreners' as the old people called visitors from anywhere that was identifiable as non -Cornish. It was all very beautiful, and all very, very, behind the times. Clothing fashions were 3 years behind London...and there was a good reason for it...there was no contact...TV was a new thing and that was the only contact with the outside world...REALLY. Think about it. I am going to delete this in a day or so, as I wish to guard my privacy. Please write back, if you feel inclined to do so. It is 4:25 am where I am now, and I am going to bed. @@erepsekahs Wow! That was a priviliege indeed. Yes, I moved to Cornwall in the early 1980s, when I was in the RAF. I remember it was a bit like that then, but it changed rapidly by the end of the decade. My ex-wife was Cornish, and I remember her grandmother talking about growing up in the 1930s and 1940s in Cornwall in Redruth, and her showing me photos of those times - all so very, very different nowadays. I wish I had taken copies of those photos. Thanks again, take care, Paul.
