  • A quick look at the Kodiak Amphibian in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking it for a quick flight from Whalsay to Out Skierries in the Shetland Islands. Who knew a float plane would be this much fun ?

    Such a very nice sea plane. I don't have the wheeled Kodiak but probably get this float version. Lately I really been into flying the classic flying boats and sea planes too. Something about landing and taking off around remote tropical islands, the serenity is priceless.

    Love the Kodak and welcome the float version. Haven’t considered this part of the world so will check it out for future events in the “Floatiak”. Thanks for the Video.

    That hill after the lighthouse would be awesome for plane spotting ! Takeoff was never in any doubt :) The cowboy bush pilot in me would have left the flaps up for more acceleration then thrown them out to push the plane off the ground at VR, I guess that's why I'm only allowed to fly a sim not a real Kodi 😀

    Looks nice. I haven’t brought the kodiak yet, but hopefully they release a bundle deal for the original wheeled and float versions together!

      I hope they do release a full package.
      I have both, and together, they are the most complete bundle of planes to fly basically anywhere in the world.

    At one point during the ahrs alignment, you said something like “keep the wings level? It’d be bloody impossible to tilt them on the ground.” Just fyi, you can have need to do the ahrs alignment while airborne, not just on the ground. I saw it on one of the missionary bush pilot vids where he was with a copilot and they deemed it to be misaligned and he redid the alignment in the air. I wasn’t sure if your comment implied that you thought it only occurred on the ground, so if it did, now you know :)

      Heh - I'll have to look out for that video.

      @@jonbeckett I'll link it if I come across it again. I believe the criteria is level flight with no acceleration for the duration of the calibration. Can't imagine its easy and it makes me curious as to the tolerance for error. I was thinking about giving it a try in the Kodiak, pulling the fuse for the G1000 and relying on the ESI500 while I get the AHRS calibrated. I'll link the vid of that too if I end up doing it.

      @@jonbeckett Found it as I watched back through my history. At 6:20 in this vid, they get a AHRS failure from one of the bumps on takeoff and he had to redo the initialization on their departure in the air. Interesting. Also interesting is that during my tour though my history, I saw another time where he got a flap failure on the g1000 during his checklist which was interesting. Anyway, here is that vid:

    That’s cute thanks. Of course I put the wheels down. Oddly if I pause the game and then unpause, it slams it back down. I also couldn’t get any power at full throttle.

      There is a prop latch you have to release on the Amphibious version of the Kodiak. It's there so that the plane isn't pulled forward in the water when idling. You do so by moving the prop pitch lever to feather and then back to full forward position. It can take a couple attempts to get the timing right.

    If you go to the Juno airport they have docs with people standing on them awaiting seaplane arrivals. Plenty immersive also. I love the Kodiak but I’m not sure I will spring for the float version. I love my zodiac with floats. I can get in and out very small lakes and streams!!!

    So ignition isn't necessary? I always do Fuel pump > Ignition > Starter on startup in the Kodiak II

    • @Profolly
      @Profolly ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. I would also have thought that ignition was required…. 🤔

    • @Part_121
      @Part_121 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ignition is only required when you use the starter in "lo" mode. In high mode, the ignition switch is not required. What I don't know is if ignition is in some kind of auto-mode when doing a "high start" or if there truly is no ignition required. I also think the real-life rule is that the first start of the day should be done with high mode but subsequent starts, assuming the engine is still warm, are done in "lo" mode.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      That reminds me of a story about the 737 and Airbus. I *think* it's true of both of them. You know how you start the right engine first on the big jets typically? The right engine charges the hydraulics for the brakes. There's a real-world accident report where a pilot started the left engine first on a morning and the plane rolled into the tug, damaging it - because the hydraulics didn't get charged up :)
