What Makes This Singer Great? Steven Tyler - Aerosmith
When speaking of great singers, Steven Tyler certainly has to be included in the conversation.
A true rock star through and through, on top of being an unmistakable character, he also has written some of the most timeless music of this generation.
Steven was called the Screamin' Demon in his early Aerosmith days and his onstage energy made him one of the most recognizable frontmen in music.
Tyler had to undergo throat surgery like many other well known artists and after having to go through extensive training to get his voice back, he’s singing better than ever.
In today’s montage of performances, we’ll look at a great example of how he is able to walk into any situation and command the room.

I'm from Boston and I grew up in Plymouth MA. I've met Steven a number of times at the mall in Kingston. The first time we were in line to get tickets at the movies and he and his wife were in front of me and my buddy. My buddy is a HUGE Aerosmith fan and started fanboying like crazy and was like "dude should I ask him for his autograph?". I had to talk him out of it because he would end up causing a scene when Steven is just out with his lady for an afternoon at the movies. Steven overheard our conversation, turned around thanked me and shook my hand. Oh and he ended up giving my buddy his autograph too. Great guy!

I love that raspy, airy quality of his voice in general, but *wow* he has such a high range. And he's so underrated. I also love how his voice has changed so much over the years, but he can still belt and it sounds amazing! Take care of those pipes, Ken. I wanna come back to this channel in 2040 when you have more subs than Pewdiepie and hear you belt out the classics for us!

Steve Perry also. I mean you can tell it's still him, but what happened? Age?damage?his album "Traces" is mostly bad, and I'm a huge Steve Perry fan, but I caught myself skipping ahead trying to find where it got better, it mostly didn't. I don't think I've listened to a whole song on the album.

I met him once! Nicest and funniest guy, and such a character. You can’t take your eyes off him, he just commands a room. I was also very surprised by how humble he is in person. He seemed really grateful for his success. Super proud to have met him.

Ive been to many many Aerosmith concerts was so close i had the tassels from his mic in my face.
Oh the good old days of no assigned seating.

That’s been my favourite version always.... by far... the band sounds so theatrical with the orchestra and Tyler sings his head off in that one. I think that’s when his voice was at its very top, top peak. He still kicks ass now though

I have a huge crush on Steve! His insane vocals and distinctive wild screeches are beyond human cognition. He's a perfect example of charisma and immense style! Not to mention his hilarious on-stage acrobatics. He's absolutely ageless and looks even better with each year. Steve still can hit those incredible notes and sounds sensational. True legend. COOL SHIRT!!! Steven Tyler’s voice is amazing. Just last week I went down a rabbit hole listening to isolated vocals of various artists. His was actually mind blowing. For me, isolated or acoustic vocal is where the rubber REALLY meets the road. Nowhere to hide.

Perfection! He aways compose and record the songs with the maximum effort possible, paying close attention to all the details. His dedication and talent are admirable. He is also charismatic, funny, smart, his songs are deep, funny, there are just, so many qualities, he is certainly my favorite hard rock vocal.

Hope I'm not repeating but I saw a tv commercial with him once. He is entering a restaurant in all his gloriousness with his entourage. Walking thru the tables. Lunching ladies spot him and slowly slipping off their chairs! He never notices. Rock on ST!

Yeah I’ve noticed he’s struggling a little bit with that lately too. He can do the higher pitched “Dream Ons” and then struggles with the long scream. I can’t imagine the Vegas residency performing numerous nights a week for months straight has helped him much. Hopefully lockdown lets his chords rest a bit.
@@Newsonix the breath space is quite reduced in that segment to have rest to the long note in pitch ..
He was on Joe Rogan's podcast recently. He shared his story of how he started using distortion to sing. He recalled Aerosmith's first album with regret, and said he took inspiration from Janis Joplin to start singing with more soul and character afterwards. Great artists inspire other great artists!

From what I understand, Steven was trained in Bel Canto. It’s really interesting how his sound changed and expanded as time went on… somewhere in there he changed his delivery and that’s when we got his iconic sound… would love to hear your take on it, as a vocal coach, and tell us what that change was…

Hey Ken u really nailed stevens profile as u've seen from my previous comments I grew up through the 70's n 80's era.Steven is one of those unique voices as well as he was none 4 his humour n nuttiness,he was class clown during some of his skool yrs.There were actually some fights in the skool yard over which band was the best,I can never pin it down 2 just one band,my luv of musical versatility won't allow it,I did follow Aerosmith huge in high skool but still never can pick just one band.Ken I could make a list but of all the singers I like 2 here u critique but there isn't enuff page lol!but for now heres some great talent that doesn't get enuff recognition. Rik Emmet from TRIUMPH, one of the masters of the double-neck guitar and the electric acoustic I luv listening to the electric acoustic it reminds me of a voice through the microphone,u get that loud crisp sound that echos.I send some more later Ken.

So many things he does are uniquely Steven and that is why the music lasts..its also chiefly important to believe the singer as they tell their story through the song..and you can clearly see the story is in his soul, that the songs come from his heart, to this day. I also enjoy seeing you enjoy the singers performances as you comment along the way. C.J. Snare from Firehouse and Joey Tempest from Europe come to mind. There are so many. Thanks Ken!

what first comes to mind when i think of Steven Tyler is legend. I couldnt describe him as well as i would do in spanish because i dont know how to translate the specific words i want to say haha. But definetly i love his voice since his first albm w Aerosmith to his last solo album. He is a living legend, even at his 70s age he stills rock more than ever. I absolutely love his performances on the stage, his falsetto, his lyrics, his personality, everything. And i'm very happy to be able to enjoy his music at least through videos on TH-cam!

I'm impressed with the lyrics: "Every time I look in the mirror, All these lines on my face getting clearer" because Tyler starting writing "Dream On" as a teenager. When he was a judge on American Idol, he told Haley Reinhart after she performed "House of the Rising Sun," "Sweet and sour, raspy. I can really relate to that."

I love this song and his voice.
He's always had a great sense of humor and surprisingly kind hearted, couldn't be the mean judge on idol to save his life and there were a lot of them that came in there where I just had to turn the volume off.
Went back and checked out your video for Dream On (saw it before a long time ago) and was again enthralled by it, but it led me to a question for you: I’m sure not ALL of your video’s are one-take wonders, and I think it would be fun to see a video compilation of your singing bloopers... like a blooper reel after some movies! I never understood how anyone could hate Steven Tyler after seeing him on Idol. He is not a jerk and there are so many stories of him being an awesome person. He is a good person and has raised a lot of money for Janie’s House.

I love Tyler, I used to not be a big Aerosmith fan even tho I liked a couple of songs, but their show at Sweden Rock 2017 Tyler just blew me away, couldnt believe he was going to turn 70, one of the best shows I've ever seen. Happy I got to see such such a legend live along with many other metal singers, Dio included :-)
