    All his amazing power and range aside, the first thing that comes to my mind about Chris is his soul-touching expression. His unplugged performaces really bring out all the character in Chris’s voice. His acoustic cover of I Will Always Love You sounds like the man was crying. Absolute greatness.

      I agree with you. I'd add that he had a masterful use of irony in his songwriting that added emotional depth. For ex., "When I'm Down," especially some of his live performances, always piques my interest and emotional investment. Apropos: "I only love you when I'm down... But one thing for you to keep in mind is I'm down all the time."

      Yeah, I don't think people realise how quietly Chris is singing. It sounds like he's really pushing hard, but you can hear all the consonants and the vowels aren't much louder. Even when you're hearing him raw through a camera's mic. It sounds like he's using the air really efficiently, even though he's not really known for long screams. I see people cover him and their face is red and their neck is bulging, and that's clearly not what he's doing. He's not constipated!

      It is a shame. She is claiming that songs that Chris wrote with members of Soundgarden were actually songs he wrote for himself rather than SG, despite in many interviews prior to his death he said that he was writing for SG. You see, she doesn't get any royalties from SG songs, Chris' first wife Susan Silver does as part of that divorce settlement.

    Chris is one of my favorite singers. I remember the 1st time I heard him on the song Jesus Christ Pose from Badmotorfinger. I was like this guy is a power house. Temple of the Dog is amazing and Chris's vocals are amazing through out this album. I always try to push my vocals when singing and Chris is an inspiration for me. I miss him he was so talented.

  • @HarlemRain75
    @HarlemRain75 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Power, range, songwriting ability. Who can ever forget the long curly hair and long black shorts with no shirt look? The other-worldly vocals in Jesus Christ pose. He said that no-one ever really complimented him on his songwriting ability until Johnny Cash covered Rusty Cage. So many classics he wrote with SG, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and as a solo artist. The post-humous grammy as well for a stellar song (When Bad Does Good). Too many classics to mention, but a few of my favourites are Spoonman, The Day I Tried to Live, Cochise, Hunger Strike, Say Hello to Heaven, Call me a Dog, Like a Stone, Show me how to Live, & Fell on Black Days. Then his solo work... wow.... Nearly Forgot my Broken Heart, Murderer of Blue Skies, and Sweet Euphoria. Then there was his stunning rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares to u". His beautiful friendship with Chester Bennington was a highlight including when they performed Hunger Strike together on stage and Chester did Chris' high parts while Chris sang the Eddie Vedder bits.
    Undoubtedly his most important work with the movie "The Silent Children" will never see the light of day. Gone but not forgotten, a great loss to the world on so many levels.

    Temple of the Dog, if I'm correct, actually came about with Chris Cornell wanting to pay tribute to Andrew Wood, and Eddie Vedder only came in because Pearl Jam (back when the band was named Mookie Blaylock) were recording in the same studio as Temple of the Dog, and they were leaving as Temple of the Dog came in. Eddie stayed behind and heard Chris struggling with the lower notes in Hunger Strike, and that's how that duet came to be.

    Hey Ken, I always love your material. Chris was great with half steps, and he could really transform his own songs with some pretty unique phrasing choices with the notes he had to work with. Besides his range and color this always impressed me the most. Might want to check out and do a review of the singer Kelly Hanson. Now with Foreigner of course, but he had great power and range in Hurricane. The songs 10,000 Years or Spark In My Heart are two very good examples. He could get and stay up there that's for sure! Enjoy, and thanks again for what you do Ken!

    I tried something myself with the "AHH" vowel but with actually singing a line from a song in a low note and gradually going up and it helped a lot, the song was granade from bruno mars and I was surprised with how easy it was to increase my range this way.... All thanks to Ken and his tips 👍

    I’m not a singer, can’t sing a lick, and don’t know what notes are sung in any songs. However, my favorite singer is Gregg Allman and I would love to hear, from a singer’s perspective, what makes him great. I couldn’t tell you why I like him so much other than I really like the way he sounds. Never having sung or played a musical instrument myself, I’d love to hear your perspective on how someone like Gregg stands above. Sure, I can can tell who can sing and who can’t, but there are certain artists who just sound different. Gregg Allman is one of those singers to me.

    Huge Soundgarden fan. On the back story of Temple Of The Dog if you aren't familiar with it. Chris was Andy Wood's room mate and after he passed, they formed Temple Of The Dog with members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden to pay tribute.

    Very interesting how you describe everything in such depth. I enjoy analyzing his lyrics but hadn't really thought about how he actually sang his music until I came across your channel. (love all your shirts, btw). I'm still so sad he is gone, but feel very blessed we have his music to live on in our hearts. He is truly my favorite singer of all time. 🖤🖤🖤

    Great video! In my opinion, Chris's unique vocals is what made him stand out amongst the others during the 90's (Seattle) grunge era. Any chance of doing 'RICHIE KOTZEN'? His voice is by far the most underrated but yet powerful! Cheers.

    Please listen to Chester Bennington singing Hallelujah at Chris Cornell’s funeral. I think it is the most heartfelt presentation of the song. In the final chorus I hear his voice going through shock, rage, depression, pleading and then to acceptance on that final hallelujah. Chester, as you surely know, ended up taking his life only 3 months later on Chris Cornell’s birthday. I would love to hear a video about Chester in this format. Chester’s voice was at once delicate, ferocious and always full of emotion.

    Ken, I love your work and I bought your course and everything is going awesome, but I just wanted to help you out with one tiny thing: a "takedown" is where you drag someone through the mud and sully their reputation, and a "breakdown" is where you examine them closely. You say you're going to do "takedowns" of more singers, but I think you mean breakdowns!! Again, besides that, great video, love Chris and very thankful to you for your course!
