I am amazed at the longevity and stamina of Steven Tyler. He seems to just have an incredible love for rock music and a passion for singing it, that it just permeates through him.
And a particular love for boogie-woogie and swing grooves… The band writes everything around the core of R&B feel rhythms. Lots of triplets in there. Very few hard rock bands do that quite so much.
Ken , you must admit that Dream On is one of the best lyrics in a rock song ever Steven knew how to write a great song lyric and then construct it in a way that is a hit song
I love this. This is one of those songs that will always stand the test of time. It's amazing to hear the nitty gritty of what is happening vocally. Thank you Ken!
I am kinda sad only to find this channel after so long. I broke my voices every now and then after singing the high note. Scared the hell out of me, rested for a week, my voice is back. Thanks god. Your version is more wild and powerful. Love it.
I really enjoyed hearing this one! I'm 100% with you on the whole, "remembering this sounding bigger"! I was surprised at how much the naked vocal came across the way it does in the track! In many (if not all) the other isolated vocals videos I've seen, it usually shows a lot of subtlety that we don't otherwise hear! I also really liked your take on the fry/scream! Very cool!
This is actually the first of this series I've been able to watch. What a great idea! You are teaching us such an entertaining way it's almost like just sitting around wasting time on you tube. Except, you are teaching anyone who watches whether they notice or not. Thanks for a fun, informative, entertaining video. Now I'm going to go watch more in this series!
This is a great analysis. I also think the very light voice support and the slightly unstable vibrato both contribute to the feeling of vulnerability that makes this vocal track really unique among all Aerosmith’s (and all other) songs… It’s the character that stands out, even with the technical imperfection. Cheers! Can’t wait for you to do a vocal analysis of something off “Frank’s wild years” or “Rain dogs…”
I remember the 1st time I heard Dream on, goosebumps.....I think I like the quality of his voice....it's like comparing a great top of the line guitar to a cheap one. You can play something simple and it sounds great. He's got a great instrument.
During the first album he wasn't confident in his voice so he made it sound different. Not to say his voice didn't need work he's definitely improve over the years. Crazy to think he wrote this song in his teens
Omg I needed this. I’m actually singing this some among 6 more guest January 11th at Motorheads in Springfield Illinois and this definitely gives me insight. Dude you rule man. I can’t wait to get much better with your class.
17 when he actually wrote this song, can't remember what I was doing at 17 , but it wasn't writing hit songs. I saw them live in 2002 and he still sounded great, I know he's had his off moments like every singer, but Steven will always be one of my all time favorites.
He revealed the massive compression he uses on American Idol - IMO. Still. I don't know anyone who screams as attractive as him. Weak or not, he makes an amazing sound.
Per your request for feedback: Dream On is a brilliantly engineered song. Tyler’s warbly / unstable vibrato sets the tone for the song’s opening, which is of painful remembrance and wistfulness of all the things in life one cannot control (such as change, and time). Then, as his voice gains strength with “Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay” - you sense he’s gaining emotional fortitude from his camaraderie with humanity (i.e. his realization he’s not alone in feeling this way / we’re all in the same boat). By the time Tyler assertively beckons us, “Sing with me” - he’s gained strength, having reached a point of resolution with the past and acceptance of the human experience. As to the reverb (which I also recall being quite pronounced) - while one could say it enhanced Tyler’s singing, I think it’s more apt to note it enhanced the song. Reverb makes the lyrics more haunting - akin to how Tyler is haunted by the past - thus driving home the message of the song. It also creates an atmosphere of being in a big space (denoting how large the future is, and possibly the size of audience to whom Tyler’s addressing). From this accrual of strength and energy, Dream On reaches hope for the future and encourages us to fight for our dreams rather than dwelling on the past, “Dream until your dreams come true.” Had Tyler and Aerosmith NOT chosen to underscore the lyrics in the way they did, I actually doubt Dream On would have made the emotional impact it did, much less become the iconic anthem it has. Thanks for reading!
Easily my favorite era of Steven's vocals. This and Seasons of Wither are two absolute gems of vocal delivery. They don't just make Steven Tylers every day... ☺️😄
I just figured that was the Boston accent coming through in the way Stephen sang. Think about when you hear people from the Ha'buh ta'k some ending syllables are slurred or missing. JM2C
You can only imagine how much this is helping my karaoke... People now just curl their upper lip (Billy Idol) with a confused look instead of sticking their fingers in their ears😉 thanks Mr. Ken!
Aerosmith is awesome always loved them and Steven Tyler dream on their biggest song of all time or one of them anyways love Steven Tyler screams on them he nails those screams with his awesome tones and techniques his vocal abilities he rocks big time he is awesome live for the most part Ken what I've heard is awesome he rocks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The screaming side of Steven is absolutely because of Janis.... his melodic sense is very influenced by the Everly Brother...obviously the Beatles, Yardbirds, Zeppelin.... I love Steven.
@16:18 - Yup. Totally laid back with fry. That scream is iconic for a reason. Laid back with control is good, not bad. Smothering the vocal track in even more reverb, when it already has tons of reverb on it already, is not what I'd be doing with it, but to each his own :)
I love this fluttery vibrato here❤ I know It's not considered good technique, but I actually think it is a nice tool to use for effect. It makes a vocal really vulberable and intimate because it's so unstable.
Would be cool if you could make an isolated vocal analysis of Last Child, one of my favourite songs. By the way I enjoy your videos so much, keep up this great work! ;)
The first time I heard this song I thought that the singer was Joe Perry, because Steven Tyler sings different than his common style from the other songs, then I knew that this song was from his first album and over the years it can change and/or improve.
Ken his voice is so different than the original recording , I’d be interested to hear your comments on a newer live version. Aerosmith is my fav ......
Oh my gosh Ken I laughed out loud!! ME TOO! As a teenager I always thought he was saying “women” in that part too! Until I bought the cassette tape album (aging myself lol), looked at the lyrics and saw that it was “with me”. 😂 Great analysis Ken!
And by the way anyone that knows anything about Steven knows that he sang the bulk of the first record, including Dream on, in a purposefully manipulated voice. He thought he sounded too sweet and angelic, so he put on this blues voice attempting to sound like one of his black idols. Which is why if you listen to the first and second records, even though they’re only record of the year apart, he sounds completely different on get your wings.
Fantastic.. I tried to scream the final part for years.. till I did it.. now I'm discovering it's more a fry and softer voice than a scream... I think I will use some software to isolate vocals and try to study naked vocals before to begin to study a song. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials
I love this isolated vocals series you do and find them very interesting. The one that stands out to me was the analysis of George Michael and Elton John "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". Everything you said in there, I had to wonder if I was holding a cue card for you because you said everything I'd thought before hearing you. When it comes to Steven Tyler, I've always really loved his voice. But if I was given the choice between listening to him or you, I'd hands down easily pick you!
Steven Tyler for me is simply the perfect singer, his voice is amazing, nothing to compare. Later versions of Dream On sound better, and I think his voice is just got better with age.
Watching your videos pushes me to compare what you’re saying with singers that i know, this happens automatically 😊! Dio did a version of "Dream on" with Malmsteen so it's a bit different, i found your version more similar to his kind of sound. Thanks 🙏
Great video as always. I have a cute little story......a musician I'm subscribed to (Brian Barnhouse), posted himself practicing his "head voice." I had suggested him checking out your channel and website for some possible input. He replied that he bought your lessons and subscribed, and loved that I knew about you and suggested you to him.👍
i think he mostly ends his words with vowels like "tears" to "teays" to relieve tension. I've tried to emulate his style, and it relieves tension in your throat
If you're not that familiar, Isaac Hayes actually did some rap that predated Walk This Way. He had two great records in the early '70s called ...To Be Continued and Black Moses with a set of 4 songs on them called Ike's Rap. You may know him for doing the Shaft soundtrack. Really provocative stuff, and his records have great soul and r&b as well.

@@j_freed Yes! I agree.
Joanne beautifully said!
He's a thoroughbred...
When I first heard his voice, I was absolutely in love. Steven Tyler is an amazing singer who can make you feel what he's singing.
Ken , you must admit that Dream On is one of the best lyrics in a rock song ever Steven knew how to write a great song lyric and then construct it in a way that is a hit song
Absolutely epic!
This song, and Kings And Queens are timeless tunes!
Thanks a lot Ken!
Wow... Steven's voice was so clear like a glass. Thank you for this! 🌹
Love it.
hes unique as heck. Hard 2 duplicate his quirks.
True, when you hear him on, you know it's Mr. Tyler. He's one of a kind
My favorite singer
I’m really loving these. I’m a 50 year old guy, always believed I was stuck in baritone range. You’re an absolute inspiration. Don’t ever stop.
Great choice of song again. Probably my favorite from Aerosmith one of my rop 12 favorite band. Old Aerosmith were awesome.🤘🤘🤘
Stevens voice is amazing and so unique. Love him.
I really enjoyed hearing this one!
I'm 100% with you on the whole, "remembering this sounding bigger"!

I like the effects you added. Your version is fantastic!! I listened to it 4 months ago and again today!👏 👏 👏
Glad you like it!
Their best song, in my opinion!
GREAT SONG VOCAL choice. Yup, the screamin demon. Always wondered this so very cool. Thanks
Amazing song and legendary artist, and as always great thoughts Ken :)
I prefer his voice here in the begining the most. I found it to be very a nice sound. I wished he sang more like this.
I always enjoy your vids. Great review
Glad you like them!
Love his voice, flaws and all. After the way he took care of his body for over a decade, it is amazing that he can sing...
Thanks Ken ...I am learning but I still have many Questions and many trick to learn from you ...Don'ts stop making videos ...
More to come!
Congratulations on 1 million subscribers! So well deserved! Keep rocking!
Thank you so much 😀
During the first album he wasn't confident in his voice so he made it sound different. Not to say his voice didn't need work he's definitely improve over the years. Crazy to think he wrote this song in his teens

Nelly xx :)

Thanks Ken! You are right about the humanity / character aspect. The "fragile" aspect of his voice really fits this song nicely. There's a balance✌
17 when he actually wrote this song, can't remember what I was doing at 17 , but it wasn't writing hit songs.

Maybe it sounds weird but I was drawn in by the imperfections in his vocals on this song. As though it drives home the point to dream on.

Perfectly said. So true.
I could agree more.
This response was actually the breakdown and reaction I really wanted to hear.
Thank you.
Great choice and Great Analysis. 👍My fave Aerosmith song.He was only sixteen when he wrote this song.it is absolutely incredible.
Incredible!
One of my favourite singers of all time🤘
Cool breakdown. You've got an amazing voice. Tyler is timeless though . He's incredible.
YOU ARE SO SO SO INFORMATIVE. Oh and by the way I always love the way you add those effects in the end. I just have no words!!!
Glad you like them!
Easily my favorite era of Steven's vocals. This and Seasons of Wither are two absolute gems of vocal delivery. They don't just make Steven Tylers every day... ☺️😄
Ken i just listened to your version and I think you sound excellent!!awesome
Thanks you!
The effects you added made it sound so haunting omg
Very educative one Ken, and technique is King !!
That's one of my favorite songs
Yeee....That's it!Very good analysis Ken💫🎙🎤
Rock on🤘👍😉
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations on 1 million! Love this series, looks like a lot of others do too!
Thanks a million! 😊
I just figured that was the Boston accent coming through in the way Stephen sang. Think about when you hear people from the Ha'buh ta'k some ending syllables are slurred or missing. JM2C
I was having a rough day, I needed one of your analysis ♥
Awesome singer
You can only imagine how much this is helping my karaoke... People now just curl their upper lip (Billy Idol) with a confused look instead of sticking their fingers in their ears😉 thanks Mr. Ken!
Awesome!
Man, this makes me miss old Aerosmith. I wish they'd do one more album like they did in the 70's: more raw, few overdubs and the like.
AAAAAAA I was waiting for that! Still waiting a Mike Patton analyse 😘🇧🇷
👍
Wow I didn't know it was YEARS and TEARS. I always thought it was singular!!! Love the rap imitation. LOVELY!!!
His daughter is beautiful liv Tyler she's a great actress as well
Wow you can sing everything. 🤗😮😮❤❤
These isolated vocals videos are so enlightening. Great points on the light fry singing (and the lines on the face getting clearer hahaha).
Glad you enjoyed it!
He sounds so young, I always thought this was a unique piece, cause he used to sing very different after this. very intesesting
Who wants Gabrielle to cover "Dream On"
The screaming side of Steven is absolutely because of Janis.... his melodic sense is very influenced by the Everly Brother...obviously the Beatles, Yardbirds, Zeppelin.... I love Steven.
I agree!! I love all those bands!
Some of Steven’s vocals remind me of some seventys female vocalist
@16:18 - Yup. Totally laid back with fry. That scream is iconic for a reason. Laid back with control is good, not bad.
Smothering the vocal track in even more reverb, when it already has tons of reverb on it already, is not what I'd be doing with it, but to each his own :)
Yes, the original is completely slathered with a very generous sheen of reverb.
I love this fluttery vibrato here❤
I know It's not considered good technique, but I actually think it is a nice tool to use for effect.
It makes a vocal really vulberable and intimate because it's so unstable.
Indeed Ken, you have an amazing 'Dream Scream'.
🙏🎶 Dream on my favorite Steven Tyler song
Awesome!
Another analysis worthy of 👍👍! Steven Tyler's voice is so unique it's unduplicatable, for lack of a more proper word.
Big hug from Brazil!
I love this videos brother
Grande abraço from Brazil!👏👏
Would be cool if you could make an isolated vocal analysis of Last Child, one of my favourite songs.
By the way I enjoy your videos so much, keep up this great work! ;)
I remember Steven saying in an interview later in life that his screaming part is the easiest part of the song. Even at his age! Legend!
The first time I heard this song I thought that the singer was Joe Perry, because Steven Tyler sings different than his common style from the other songs, then I knew that this song was from his first album and over the years it can change and/or improve.
This song Absolutely rocks! 🤘🏼 always
Hey ken!
Good one…and your version is cool too
Thanks for lesson .
You bet!
I've been waiting a long time for this!!!!
Ken his voice is so different than the original recording , I’d be interested to hear your comments on a newer live version. Aerosmith is my fav ......
Great suggestion, John!
I agree 👍
I agree also
Ken seems like a great engineer , producer also , I would love to work with him one day …. Just dreaming on .
Ken, one of your CCM compatriots, Greg X. Volz was my introduction to this song, what a cracking version.
Oh my gosh Ken I laughed out loud!! ME TOO! As a teenager I always thought he was saying “women” in that part too! Until I bought the cassette tape album (aging myself lol), looked at the lyrics and saw that it was “with me”. 😂 Great analysis Ken!

Thanks for weighing in!
Absolutely correct. He speaks if this in his book.
KEN welcome Back. Yey
😊
Good very good
Thank you Ken for the analysis of Steven Tylor.Greetings from Berlin.(Fechi's design factory)
Thanks for watching!
I loved it the effects you added would that be.part of a remaster? Thx
As I recall, Greg X Volz has a pretty stellar cover of Dream On on one of his solo records back in the 80s.
Oh wow
Fantastic.. I tried to scream the final part for years.. till I did it.. now I'm discovering it's more a fry and softer voice than a scream... I think I will use some software to isolate vocals and try to study naked vocals before to begin to study a song. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials

There is an awesome video on TH-cam of Steven singing this song with the late Willie K and it is amazing!
I'll have to check that out!
Steven Tyler for me is simply the perfect singer, his voice is amazing, nothing to compare. Later versions of Dream On sound better, and I think his voice is just got better with age.
DREAM ON!! ♥️🎶😃
Till the Dream comes true!
omgggggggg i loved it

Oh my! Thanks teacher!!!
You're welcome, Igor!
Ken, your latest videos have been amazing! Been subscribed for a couple of years! I would love some Isolated vocals from the Scorpions! Thank you!
I've done a video on that.
This is crazy...I remember this song sounding an entire octave higher...
Me😃: (expecting a hyperbolic praise for Tyler's finale)
Ken: He's not killing it.🧐
Me: (questioning all my past judgment calls)
R.I.P. Elvis. Died 8-16-77. THE KING.

Despite a few flaws in his vocals he's still one of the best front men in rock history
indeed!
i think he mostly ends his words with vowels
like "tears" to "teays"
to relieve tension. I've tried to emulate his style, and it relieves tension in your throat
Check him out at the Kennedy Honors doing a Beatles medley.
Love to follow your isolated vocals because I cant sing at all. Only listen nice music💗
