He actually isn't completely correct about this. I have an Infiniti Q50 with a 3.7 liter V6 from the Nissan 370Z and so far I have siphoned about $8,000 worth of repair work out of them and it hasn't even been a year yet. If I dumped the policy right now, I would be making away like a bandit, literally. The only reason this works really well is because I have a super cool service advisor that works with me in order to get my claims put through. Just had my display control unit (2200) and backup camera (800) replaced yesterday, and I didn't even need to pay the $100 deductible which is required. In the claim, he requested throttle bodies in order to try fixing an RPM-dipping problem I have, which doesn't throw codes, so he put a check engine light and throttle body codes in the car to get the inspector to be convinced that they needed to be replaced. In the end, the failure of the throttle bodies couldn't directly be proven, which I understand. There is no way to tell, but my advisor tried for me, even though those throttle bodies aren't even excusable given there are no codes and I am suffering a condition that is essentially a needle in a haystack. But my DCU & camera issue predated my warranty adoption by 30K miles, yet the advisor still got them to replace it! I also brought my own special oil with me and asked for an oil change, but without my own oil filter, and he sent me out the door without charging a single dollar. Real good guy. Not everyone is out to get you, some are very good.

When I worked at a dealship in the service dept, we would get customers with those warantees, and they would ask us VERY specific questions, such as,"is it dripping ON THE GROUND?" Because if it qas leaking, but not on the ground...they weren't going to cover it. (In the military we classified leaks like this, Class 1,2,3,etc., class 3 leak is bad) So, I would have to walk to the technician abd say, is it leaking on the ground? Of course he knew what was up, and he wiuld say, Yes, its leaking on the ground. Fkn ridiculous that we should be expected to send the customer back out on the road with a leak, kniwing that very soon after they were destined to have a failure from a class 3 leak. So, we just played the game.

It isn’t the valve shims that wear. The valve seats and valve faces wear, effectively allowing them to be pulled up by the springs slightly closer to the rockers, thereby tightening the clearance. That’s why they get tighter with wear.

But like with hot rods n hi po stuff you get better performance with solid lifters or followers whatever the case may be, all be it more maintenance. Having said that, hydraulic followers and lifters do work very well. But Honda being a performance oriented company like to do mechanical and I get that, and even being a Ford guy I still have alot of respect for the Japanese technologically, they do a darn good job! • @s13gouf60
      @s13gouf60 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@429thunderjet2 I assume the mechanical valve adjustment needed on the very rare occasion is offset by the fact that unlike hydraulic lifters, it wont seize up or need oil pressure to be in proper adjustment making cold starts closer to right reducing wear. The decision not to use a shim bucket system probably has more to do with their valve train design. The I-vtec head is a pretty cool mechanism if you're a gearhead.

    • @429thunderjet2

An example of planned obsolescence is the radio/infotainment system gets outdated and the auto manufacturer won't update it. They just stop supporting it. For example Toyota's before 2019 have the old version of their audio system called Entunes Audio 2.0 which doesn't have Android Auto and Toyota won't update it or offer an upgrade. Only the newer Toyota that have Entunes 3.0 get updated. It would be nice if could replace the 2.0 head unit with the 3.0 unit, but Toyota won't do that.

I agree. Had a 2003 Accord that had 195,000 miles on it that developed a valve tick. All valves clearances were in spec except 1 - due to the cam lobe being worn. Ends up Honda had a heat treatment issue for a batch of cams and lucky me, I got one of them. If it wasn't for that, there would have been no need to even check the valve clearances.

Probably nothing. Valve adjustment is only done when excessive ticking is heard from them being out of spec, a noticeable rough running/rough idle condition, &/or the obvious related check engine light.
Good to check when you do valve cover gaskets since that's obviously the only way to access the valves, but j series don't grenade themselves if the valves aren't adjusted at a specific interval.

Scotty, I appreciate your insight and shared experience. My wife has a 2017 Hyundai Tucson (4 cyl.)and upon changing the spark plugs I noticed on cylinder 4 that the gas line runs just above the cylinder. In order to get the ignition coil on plug out, the gas line needs to be removed. I completed this even though I thought it was a horrible way to engineer an engine. Taking the line off led to gas dripping from the line all over the place. What kind of asinine engineering is this???

My parents’ credit union had a power train warranty on a 14 Sentra that they basically got for nothing, knowing the CVT would go out soon. It went out at 95,000 and the credit union paid for a brand new one and labor. Everything, no problems at all. The warranty was a bit expensive upfront, but saved them $3,500 in the end. Our credit union is Alabama Power Credit Union though. So I’d only get one from a reputable credit union, bank, or even company, that has a good record of paying out. Just take your time and research before buying.

I have a Honda Element. Went to two independent mechanics to get the valves adjusted. The first mechanic, when my car was at 80,000 miles, didn't think it was necessary since I didn't have any problem. So, I believed him. Car gets to 112,000 miles, now I have hesitation and rough idle with spuratice engine dying at red lights, etc. Now I know it must be the valves out of adjustment. Go the second mechanic for a quote. They don't like to do valve adjustments because it takes too much time! Thankfully I go to the University of TH-cam and learn how to do it myself! Took me a couple of days since I cleaned the Throttle Body and air valve (which was frozen due to carbon). Now it runs like a sewing machine.

I bought a warranty (repair contract) in 2015 on a 2007 Ford Ranger. I made money off of it. I had 4 repairs done; lost money on first 2 and saved more than than I paid for the policy on the last 2. The third repair I paid what the parts would have cost so I broke even and a professional did the repairs. I had to take it to a friend that is a mechanic that worked very carefully to fix everything possible for the last repair. What I saved just on parts was more than what I paid for the policy. The credit union changed the repair contract company soon thereafter to one that is well known to not fix anything. I got lucky. I don't recommend them now.

Hey Scotty, I love your videos! I'm just north of ya in Southern Illinois and I just bought another 1998 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 with 233,XXX miles on. When I test drove it, it was very cold snowy. I drove it around the parking lot in every gear and it worked just fine. Brought it home on a trailer and parked it. It has now warmed up and when I try to drive it the thing will only go for about 30 - 45 seconds and then nothing, it won't move anymore in any gear. It has a 4L60E automatic transmission in it. Should I fix it or should I replace it? I only paid 2 grand for the thing but would hate to have to put that in a new transmission. PLEASE HELP! Thank you and keep up the good work!

My CRV 2005 was within .0015 loose on exhaust at 118,000 miles. My Honda 2007 Civic was about .002 loose on exhaust at 170,000. (you could hear it slightly)
Now a question. 2004 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 4 cylinder. I'm the original owner. 70,000 miles. Well maintained all by me and garage kept. Looks and runs like new. For the fourth time, it won't start. Really strange since it's the only time I have ever heard it crank since as soon as you hit the key, it starts.
The first time, it made just a little microsecond like it was starting and then just cranking like crazy. Three of four tries. No deal. Figure I must have flooded it. Came back later and it started.
This was years ago. Now it has done it twice more. Once warm and I had turned it off not 10 minutes ago. It started on the 4 try. A few days later, cold, did it again and it would not start after a few tries. Cranking like crazy. (Good Max Everstart battery)
Checked for codes with blue reader. One on rear heated oxygen sensor stored (Only mechanical repair I have ever made and that was due to the heater burnt out on that oxygen sensor.) No other codes. The truck started and did not repeat the code.
I swapped the power outlet relay with the same EFI relay in the engine compartment after I checked both relays. I added a grounded spark plug on top of the valve cover so I can pull the number one coil pack off the engine spark plug to check for spark next time.
Note on the vehicle that there is no fuel pump timer to charge up fuel pressure like most cars. What is even worst is you can't even her fuel pump with a full tank. The EFI relay drives the Circuit opening relay in crank mode. Once running, the ECM sees that from the crank position sensor and then grounds the coil on the circuit opening relay in the on position then and only then.
I checked the circuit open relay under the dash that is power by the ECM. Even jumped it there and that is when I realized you cannot hear the pump as a check. I did attach a wire to the relay tank wire side. Now I can attach my meter to that and ground. I can key on and see no voltage. Crank and it becomes 12.8 or so. Starts and let off starter at ky on and see the 14. or so running motor charge.
What is my problem? It's so hard to catch. The 70,000 is 95% city. Has all the red lights actually put 200,000 miles on fuel pump and it's worn out? And occasionally not running? Is it the ignition switch? Both these are a pain to just guess at.
