Intense, exciting, and more. There's never a dull note, and despite a lot happening, the textures are so clean. The crescendos arrive at the right moment, and that's the magic. One feels an innate rhythmic pulse throughout - this is Karajan. In the 2nd movement, the cellos seem to have a life of their own, and the timpanist is uncanny. The 3rd movement is beautifully phrased - he's rightly called the emporer of legato. The last movement is exquisitely balanced - the strings are never drowned by the chorus. Karajan is light years ahead, and the Berlin Phil is musical to the nth degree. I had to continue listening till it was over.
Beguiling from the onset. The crescendos arrive at the right moment and enhance the impact. In the 2nd movement, the cellos have a life of their own, and the uusuai timbre of the timpani adds another dimension to the experience. The 3rd movement is so beautifully phrased. Karajan has worked his magic yet again, and the Berliners are musical to the core. I have never heard anything better. Thanks for the uplifting experience, Toscanini.
this along with toscanini's 40s cycle with NBC will never be surpassed for probably another 2-3 centuries. If one prefers a more analytical/slower tempi, then Klemperer's version with Philharmonia should be the #1 on their list.
Where are the younger musicans in the orchestra 1977? Only older and midleaged men there. No women there, only in the choir because they need the sopran voices. It's good that times have changed. The first woman in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra was Madeleine Carruzzo. This was in 1982. Google her name. th-cam.com/video/FHlfr69MYFE/w-d-xo.html
Didier Belmondo.
Recordings that are better than this recording are the Chicago Symphony Orchestra recordings of the ninth symphony in 1972, 1984, and 2014 (each recording is available to view and listen to on You Tube)

This 1977 performance is the recorded all-time best.
Furtwangler...
This was one of the worst karajan performances I have ever heard. The tempos were far too fast. They killed the beauty of the composition

The greatest performance of this I ever hope to hear. Epic, thrilling, titanic!
Thank you!

Leon Spierer and Thomas Brandis as concertmasters. It was amazing concert.
Love it very much !! ❤
Thank you very much for sharing this great performance! Simply perfection!
If you listen to this at 1.1x speed it's almost the perfect interpretation.
Oh! That's good idea. It would be Toscanini's

Grazie
I much prefer the 1963 studio recording, for this and all the Beethoven symphonies.

I also really enjoy Toscanini's 1948 performance and Otto Klemperer's live performance on November 15, 1957!

I learned that there were female members in the Berlin Philharmonic even before Sabine Meyer, thanks to you. Thank you.
So what? Berliners had that sound in those years, nowadays their sound is nothing special
I prefer the Kleiber VPO record.
