Beethoven once told a Prince, "Prince, what you are, you are through chance and birth; what I am, I am through my own labor. There are many princes and there will continue to be thousands more, but there is only one Beethoven." So I'm of the opinion that were he to be asked on his thoughts of his music being played and celebrated nearly 200 years later, he would say something to the effect of "As it should be!"
I found a brand new appreciation for Daniel Barenboim after watching this. I have always had a great admiration for him but I am extremely prejudice when it comes to Beethoven's 9th after years of listening, watching and twice attending live in Berlin and Chicago, with Herbert Von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein. Beethoven 9 is the epitome of music, the embodiment of the human nature; joy, happiness, sadness, suffering, passion, indifference, brotherhood, betrayal and just about anything that makes human life so significant and cherished despite how useless we are in the grand scheme of things... In my opinion, this piece will always be the most genius work any person has ever created - period. Beethoven; the hero who won victory in his battle against destiny and fate - truly transcending above the limits of mortal passion...❤
I cannot agree with you more. Pure genius, and *the* most beautiful piece of music everwritten. This performance moved me to tears. Long live the brilliance of Beethoven.
Wow! What a great summary. Can’t think of a better way to try and describe this masterpiece. Sometimes words are not enough but you got very close. Bravo!
Barenboim has issued a statement saying that he is stepping down due to having been diagnosed with a severe neurological disease. It broke my heart to see a legend make such an announcement. God bless you Daniel.
Barenboi will always be remember as one of the greatest conductors of all times, after all his interpretations are always so beautiful and historically accurate.
To anybody reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting you or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the dark thoughts, the overthinking, and the doubt exit your mind may clarity replace confusion. may peace and calmness fill your life. ❤
I was visiting the most beautiful tropical cloud forest in Costa Rica. A place that will die out and turn into a desert land in about 30 years due to climate change...And I became a sad man...Randomly I came to see this video, read your comment...Why should we live in despair? We got lucky to see the beautiful thing the universe gifted us for this very little time we are living. I can go in peace knowing that the world will continue its course of creation an destruction and creation again...Without me, Without anyone of us...Without humanity because we are not needed at all
From my childhood, the 9th symphony always my sources of comfort, encouragement, my enchilada of emotions. Now a 70 years not so old man, sick lying on bed, giving me the most relief from sufferings, with even more HOPE for me and all humanity.
Musician/comedian/etc Bill Bailey mentions this in one of his comedy shows. Everybody remembers these songs. People who survive a plane crash and are stranded in the mountains for months aren't singing trash pop by [Generic Boy Band]. Even stuff as recent as Gloria Gaynor has more lasting power than what you hear coming out these days. But this? This wasn't just some ear-worm cash-grab in its day. This was a genius showing off. Which I'm okay with, really.
Our daughter is 8 and has severe autism. She almost non-verbal yet she seems to understand this piece. It helped her redirect from having a loud screaming behavior. This piece expresses so much about the human condition without words.
Autism is hard to deal with. Might I recommend when they are screechy or clearly overwhelmed, a dark quiet room can help. Because on average autistic people persevere 8 times as much stimulation. So lights and sound are the biggest enemy. Hope this helps.
My son is at the severe end of the autistic spectrum and is non verbal with behavioural problems. All you can do is be patient with her so that her anxiety level don' increase. It is hard, I know, Ondrej is nearly 18.
@@Alan-r6r5n It's great to hear from another autism mom, especially one farther on the journey than us. I've been doing homeschool with Amy and it's beautiful to see her learning and loving to read. She's singing a lot now and loves music as much as ever. Patience is key like you say. It's a form of love. Best wishes to you and your son!
On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven s 9 th symphony premiered in Vienna which is considered a magnificent work and which is relevant for today s time. Today, the entire musical world is commemorating the 200 th anniversary of the release of this magnificent work
Did not realize that. It means the volume control will be set on "11" for this today. Have sometimes wondered if the first audience, listening to the first 40 seconds or so, thought they were hearing the orchestra tuning up.
What an amazingly happy world it would be if people all over the world could sing Beethoven’s 9th “ Ode to Joy ” all together holding each other’s hands with the feelings as honest as children, Unite their hearts as “One” and live in peace …….
It does have that effect. I was trying to write something like that but I thought I better scroll through the comments first in case someone said it better than I could. Well I found your comment in about 2 seconds. You articulated it rather well I thought.
The most incredible thing about the Ninth Symphony is that, after so many bad TV commercials, so much stupid advertising, so much misuse that has been made of it, every time you listen to it again the miracle occurs of getting excited as if it were the first time. time you listen to it.
I feel that about the 6th. The Ren & Stimpy cartoon show liked to use its 4th movement a bit for hilarious effect LOL. I love the 6th but you can't go past the 9th - it's a masterpiece. Remember when Audi were flogging Vivaldi concertos?
Did you guys realised that the conductor Daniel Barenboim has NO Music note front of him that means He is memerized the whole Symphony , Every single music note is in his heart in his mind 👍 only Genius can do🙇♀️
Keep in mind that the musicians will keep playing almost no matter what the conductor does. It is almost as if you were waving a stick in front of your stereo. It is a common misconception that the conductor is somehow "playing" the orchestra like a piano. The conductor's main job is as a rehearsal coach. By the time you get to the concert his job is mostly done. Many of them put on a good show at concerts and some of them are inspiring the musicians to play their best. Most of them have oversized egos and take as much of the credit as people will give them.
@@TreeSymphony52 Are you a conductor? Or have you worked under many different conductors or attended rehearsals with some of the great conductors as I have? My point is that most people overestimate the importance of the conductor. They usually have the biggest egos and will take all the credit and are not necessarily the most accomplished musicians. Your"wrong answer" response lacks nuance and shows a lack of experience with the orchestral dynamic.
@@TreeSymphony52 One of THE most impressive conductors I ever witnessed was Claudio Abbado. He had real leadership skills and possessed humility, which was unusual in this big ego field. His approach brought out the musicians dedication and love of the music, and they worked together to bring about amazing performances, with everyone on board to bring about the best possible performance. This kind of synergy is rare in the human experience and when tapped into is transmitted to the audience as a rare, uplifting and entrancing experience. There are only a few conductors that can bring this kind of intention to their work, inspiring their team to create magic.
Beethoven is mesmerizing, not only to the audience, but to each and every member of the orchestra and chorus. Hats off to Daniel Barenboim who founded this orchestra, integrating Israelis and Arabs, all united by the power of music.
It's such a beautiful moment @ 1:01:50 when the conductor relaxes for a few seconds and looks over the orchestra with such happiness and pride and peace like all of the rehearsals and hard work and years of practice and joy, sweat and tears - everything - everything came together at that one moment, that culmination of the beauty of humanity and it's just such a cool thing to see. 🙏🏼
The conductor was definitely tense. The orchestra and choir did a phenomenal job with a complex, emotional piece, culminating in " Freude." Magnificent job.
Agree with you. By the way, Just listening to that last 20 minutes doesn't seem to make me feel the magnificence of this music that I always play from the very beginning.
I’m a 23 year old guy and now make habit of listening to this music more than secular music 🎼 🎶 it brings a great peace to my heart and my ears are dancing. Thanks for making this music available 😊
you may have a spiritual experience listening to this symphony (as many of us do), but it IS secular music. It is not religious music. It is music about the triumph of the then revolutionary bourgeoisie over the ordered and preordained forces of musical classicism and socioeconomic feudalism.
Beethoven's ninth is one of my all-time favorite classical pieces. I have listened to Ode to Joy frequently during the past year and a half as I have battled cancer and other health issues. It has helped me through some rough times. I could listen to the 9th every day!
Hy David I trust you will win this fight. If I had to give words to describe the Gran Finale of 4 th movement 9 symphony the world woul be. -A request made with all the soul for humanity to unite to become like brother'. A request where he ask with all his strength. Listen it my friend when you need Power
This is THE BEST performance of Beethoven's Symphony 9 I have ever heard. This composition is my life's anthem. Since 1976. I'm 64 now. Incredible. Who says Germans aren't emotional? Jesus, this video blows that misconception away.
Maestro has two sons. One is first violinist in this orchestra, the other one is a famous DJ in the Berlin night life. And he talks so proudly about both of them 😂❤️
I do, too. Every. Single. Time. I remember listening to the piece in the car on the 10th anniversary of the Berlin wall coming down. I was then, as I am now, in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never wanted to be home in Berlin as much as I did at that moment.
He heard in his head. When asked how he thought up all this music. He said "I don't. It comes from the heavens." He also had serious drinking problem. Over 200 yrs. Later everyday someplace in the world someone plays his music.. thanks Ludwig ! Love you
What an amazingly happy world it would be if people all over the world could sing Beethoven’s 9th “ Ode to Joy ” all together, unite their hearts as “One”, and live in peace
I loved this performance of "The Ninth" for a few reasons. First, the music by Beethoven is brilliant. Second, the performances by the musicians and singers was fantastic! And third, I so very much enjoyed the camera work that showed the emotions of the all the performers - especially the conductor, Daniel Barenboim.. That is really living in the moment. Thanks for sharing this wonderful music.
He was very deep - transported, and in an altered state by the finish. I have never seen such devotion to a piece in a conductor. As if it was only ever to be performed once and this was that one performance. Exquisite.
"At a certain place in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, for example, he might feel that he is floating above the earth in a starry dome, with the dream of immortality in his heart; all the stars seem to glimmer around him, and the earth seems to sink ever deeper downwards." Friedrich Nietzsche

The world is in such turmoil now. Everywhere there is hate and anger. Beethoven promised a better future but only if people would just stop and listen. Here, there is no hate, no injustice, no war, no anger just joy and peace. It's a reminder of what we are in essence when we listen to our hearts. It's a reminder that we still have some way to go but in the meantime, I can sit here and listen to this beautiful majestic music in peace knowing for this moment that future is now.
I heard this whole thing just thinking that if I were asked to show anything to describe humanity to an alien, I would show Beethoven's Symphony no. 9. Beautiful!
What a fantastic orchestra, the enthusiasm, dedication and virtuosity is a tribute to how people from such different backgrounds can overcome everything just for the love of music.❤

Beethoven's 9th is timeless. It is a like an absolutely clearest diamond that sparkles with unmatched brilliant colors. God saved Beethoven's 9th to be his greatest accomplishment.
Scherzo: Molto vivace - Presto [17:54] III. Adagio molto e cantabile [29:59] IV. Ode to Joy [47:12]
We can only suspect how hard it was for Beethoven to compose this masterpiece symphony without hearing any notes. He presented his finished score to friends only to tune the volume of the various instruments.
However, he heard the pitch of all the notes in his mind. Volume is only to make the balance between notes better, but the sound itself is the same, whether it's loud or quiet.
@@silverlinings3946 Just imagine having to orchestrate so many instruments, balancing the French horns and percussions, yet keeping violins expressive throughout the adagio's musical phrasing.... A true masterpiece: a first choral symphony which could not fail ! As an example, consider the same difficulty in painting. Late in his life, Monet lost part of his vision, due to cataract & glaucoma. Yet, he still had to paint to make ends meet. His colours became more agressive and weren't as delicate as those of his youth. Somehow, he did not managed his visual handicap.
It is impossible even to imagine that such a Grandiose Musical Composition could have been born in the mind of a completely deaf man... What a truly Grandiose, amazing and beautiful kind of mind it was... no, not "was".. - it is. 1:01:30
As a professional musician , I can tell you , it's NOT that impossible to imagine. And even more - when you become deaf , your inner hearing becomes sharper by far, cz nothing disturbs you from the outside. You can write, sitting at the table, going somewhere in chariot and even sleeping - you just need to listen to your inner voice. And some composers who didn't have such a problem, still didn't need the instrument to compose the music - for example Mahler used to write , when he walked in the mountains.

One of the greatest musical works ever composed. Never ceases to amaze, the scope and imagination of Beethoven, who had long since lost his hearing. What a remarkable human being he must have been. Growing up with a bullying, drunken father and looking like a neglected boy at school, piano prodigy, early compositions, already head of the family aged 18, the deaths in infancy of four of his siblings, being a young court musician, the mood swings, the denial of love in order to dedicate himself to his music, the battle for custody of his nephew, the political upheavals, the deafness. A genius who is my co-favourite composer with Mozart. This Symphony no 9 once discovered early in life becomes a lifelong friend. I also love the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th symphonies and the piano sonatas, the later ones take us off on a spiritual journey. Would love to hear what everyone's favourite Beethoven works are, in addition to this one of course !
Hi. I really resonate with your answer. As I just found out about Beethoven and his inspiring, magnificent and beautiful legacy, I really love to hear sonatas and symphonies I didn´t hear before. Right now I was totally amazed by this piece, sonata no. 23 (appassionata) and the Moonlight Sonata. I also started to play the piano and the first piece I learned was "Für Elise" which I also enjoy. I am thankful beyond words to have the possibility to enjoy his genius masterpieces. It´s amazing to see that one can overcome great difficulties in life and use all of his suffering and pain for something greater and good. Thank you for sharing your opinion and your impuls. I wish you all the best. Erik.
Bravo!!! This music is forever and always the epitome of mankind has to offer. The brilliance of what Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and all the others brought to us is surely a gift. Brovo again to the West Eastern Divan Orchestra and Conductor Daniel Barenboim. Thank you. Peace to you all.
I am sure that Beethoven was very proud of these musicians for performing his final symphony. Beethoven's 9th Symphony is one of my favorite masterpieces I have ever listened to in recent memory.

Agree entirely. The 9th and WAMozart Rquiem can truly separate the soul from the earthly body and take us directly to heaven, magically, peacefully, wonder and float before gliding down like clouds, rain and fog to settle us back to ground in harmony with the universe, and yes, the rain is mixed with tears of agony and joy.

We had the pleasure of listening to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim for many years. We love Muti, Barenboim was something special.
Yes, Muti could bring out so much of the CSO. I went to two performances of Mozart piano cto #23 and Mahler 5th sym. Stunning, it sounded like two distinctly different orchestras between the pieces!
This was an amazing performance. But prefer the Orchestra's version during the 2012 BBC Proms. For one thing, the choir was almost 3 times as big, lending a lot more power. IMO (But the 1st flute is the same.)
@@spikespa5208 Our CSO was also blessed with Georg Solti for a number of years until his death. He took a second-rate orchestra and the rest is music history. But Barenboim was the consummate teacher.
I absolutely love what this orchestra can do for music and for humanity. I hope these young musicians realize what role they can play in bringing peace to such a troubled part of the world. Daniel Barenboim is a visionary genius. I remember seeing him conduct the Berlin Philharmonic and then walk across the street to a different venue and play tango. It was brilliant.

My mother was a violinist in orchestras in 3 counties and several states. I’ve been to countless concerts. France, S.Korea, Ohio, Michigan, England, and this is the best I’ve heard, My mother always had a love/dread relationship with this piece.
The dialogue between Daniel Barenboim and his musicians is really wonderful : one can feel their mutual understanding of the music and how to play it !

Oh that great. Would you tell us which specific segment of the 9th that she likes?
Beethoven's Ninth is an expression of philosophy with music, and only a comparatively part of it is words.

Could be the best performance of Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 ever.

A very nice thought indeed!
@@leeingram5187 How to spot the communist.

We can only suspect how hard it was for Beethoven to compose this masterpiece symphony without hearing any notes. He presented his finished score to friends only to tune the volume of the various instruments.
Fantástico coro e orquestra. De arrepiar!
👍

West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.

My mother was a violinist in orchestras in 3 counties and several states.
I’ve been to countless concerts. France, S.Korea, Ohio, Michigan, England, and this is the best I’ve heard,
My mother always had a love/dread relationship with this piece. She loved to hear it, and while she loved playing it, she also dreaded the time it took to practice, and perform. Between the changes, the length. And the choirs, is was a major work out.

May 7 - 2024, 200 years!! The great Symphony 9....
Woohoo! 🎉
I can watch this over & over, conductors to me are fascinating especially Daniel Barenboim
The dialogue between Daniel Barenboim and his musicians is really wonderful : one can feel their mutual understanding of the music and how to play it !
Too bad that fame got to his head and now he postures as an antiZionist jerk.
I wonder what it must have been like to hear the very first performance of this masterpiece. Just imagine it - using vocals in a symphony was a brand new thing back then and then Beethoven comes out swinging with the greatest piece of music ever created
Happy Birthday, Beethoven! He is my favorite (by far!) composer. His 9th Symphony is transformative. It’s an absolute MASTERPIECE! (IMO/for me) it is the most powerful, amazing, magnificent, complex pieces of music ever written. Listening to it transports me into another world…brings me to tears, takes my breath away, etc. It is truly an experience!
Thank you for posting and sharing this beautiful performance.
We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I fully aggree. It takes me to Heaven!
EXCELLENT, how Daniel Barenboim performed with this international mixture of musicians and the DIVINE 9th symphony of BEETHOVEN 🤩🤩🤩
I would love to attend this symphony orchestra classical music. I'm asking myself how one man can compose this sophisticated music? Amazing. It's so rich. My brain is composing all kind of motion pictures while this music is playing in the background. Peace, happiness, misery, love, heartbreak and victory over evil. I don't know Why I am crying?
It moves me every time a listen to it. How can a man write an one hour symphony like this being virtually deaf? It is amazing and a testimony of his sheer will and mastery.
¡QUE VIDEO TAN DECEPCIONANTE!!!...una GENIAL obra de L.V. Beethoven (9ª.
Not virtually deaf. Deaf. By all accounts.
"Deaf" to the earthly but very much attuned to heavenly sounds!
Word is he was faking it for the clout
Transcending time and space and races,
No9 is prodigious, and immeasurable and off the charts
Thanks to Daniel Barenboim, the orchestra and the choir! Great! 👏👏👏
Classical music is an art, not science. God gave us classical music to see how our world can come together through music.
Classical musical orchestration is proof of diversity where its beauty is through many components working together to make it magical! Classical music rocks!
What a performance! Bravo!
Thank you for your comment. If possible, please comment in English next time so that more people can follow the discussion. All the best!
MUCHAS GRACIAS.
Con mucho gusto! Nos alegra que lo haya disfrutado! 😊
I am feeling it all on his behalf. 😊
Es una exquisites de orquesta. Demasiado buena.
