Forgot to mention re: the silence. It was Blomstedt’s masterful keeping his arms extended and not lowering them until HE felt it was time to applaud. He conducted the audience’s silence. Bravo, Maestro.
The respect and love Maestro Blomstedt has for his musicians is unsurpassed. I was fortunate to live in San Francisco when he was the music director. I learned so much from his tenure. His Dvorak, Sibelius, Brahms and Bruckner are without peer. The world has been blessed by his music.

Amazing. Blomstedt is 97 years old. He is conducting without a score and even joins the chorus in singing!! I know he can conduct this in his sleep but still this an achievement. Just f...king amazing!!
One of my little daydreams for when the pain is breaking through is to imagine (with no visuals, I have aphantasia) going back in a time machine and giving Beethoven flawless ear transplants/implants/whatever at least so he could hear his 9'th performed with perfectly clear hearing. He deserved it. Such a troubled life brought about this music, we owe him our thanks.
@@b43xoityup. It helps them keep up with the choir without having to pay as much attention to them. Beethoven is hard without the choir. By singing in their head they can pay most of the attention to the orchestra. (My mother was a Violinist in orchestras)
Well, at the time of this filming + recording, Maestro Blomstedt was _only_ 88. I was to attend his concert conducting the NHK Symphony Orchestra in October 2023 in Tokorozawa, Japan, but he cancelled it due to ill health. He was 96 at that time, which has already surpassed Leopold Stokowski (who died at age 95) and must enter the Guinness Book.

Herbert Blomstedt is the god damn man. I'd love to play in a violin section for him. It took me a few minutes to pick up on his cues, and once I did, I could see how much he is commanding this orchestra. Good for him to have that much stamina and energy at that age. You can tell he's done this five thousand times.
I just love Beethoven, I used to rock out to Queen and Pink Floyd and now I rock out to Beethoven! I know the whole No 9 symphony by heart and joyfully sing out both the men's and women's singing parts, but I have no idea what the words are, but it makes me happy! I find myself putting this video on a loop so I can hear many times. My very favorite Beethoven symphony is No 7 Mvt 2, I can't get enough of that one. What a genius Beethoven is!

Allegro assai: Freude, schöner Gotterfunken
Andante Maestoso - Allegro energico, sempre ben marcato
Please, no commercials during the symphony
Sensacional!
Thanks for posting. The soloists really should learn their small parts from memory since the chorus and the conductor himself don't need their scores
The female soloists are non-native speakers of German (i.e. speakers of Slovak and Japanese), which of course serves no excuse for the score in hand.
Even the maestro is reading, or turning pages...
The performance is magnificent, but holding back the ovations after the final chord makes no sense after this joyful, outbursting finale. Be brothers, embrace each other, feel the energy of being human. And not: sit back, hold tight, overthink...
Increíble está hazaña del máster Beethoven...aún predilecta de los mortales.....
This phenomenon of joy is the expression of immortal humanity!
Don't interrupt with your ads. Put them at the beginning. This is now unlistenable.
