I've done a lot of training with my dog. She's very smart and picks things up pretty quickly. Yesterday I decided, for something to do during shelter-in-place, we'd do some more training. I thought we'd start with a high-five. I sat on the floor with her for 20 minutes, with a treat in my fist. She sniffs, licks, pushes with her nose, but not once did she raise a paw. We tried again this morning. Still no paw action. How do I encourage her to use a paw?
Hi there, Jean. We would recommend following the steps highlighted in this video. Repetition is the key. It's important to allow your pup time to pick up your command. Also, to be rewarded when they respond. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns that we can help with. She'll be raising her paw in no time!🐾🐶
Start with shake - and make try directing her paw into you hand that way first - with praise :) worked for my lil malteser!

I taught her with one paw BUT how do I get her to high five with the other paw. I need her to do both (one at a time) as directed by my vet for active range of motion due to arthritis in her elbows. Thanks!

What's the difference between this and paw?
It's a different command word, same trick! Use whichever you are most comfortable with.
I’ve used this video alone to teach my puppy to shake and to high five! If you want to teach them to shake just use the first stage and don’t put your hand up at all and teach them to keep their paw in your hand to shake before you reward them!

When I put the treat in my hand and make a fist my dog just sniffs and then waits. He know lots of trick like how to spin in his back feet and how to walk on his back feet so I thought he would be able to do the pretty quick, but he doesn’t do what you said they should do.
Don't give up, Emma. When dogs are very food motivated they can get distracted. Keep practicing!

You can try gently lifting their paw to do the high five and then reward them with a treat. After a few rounds of doing this, your dog should start to associate lifting their paw for the high five with receiving the treat. Practice makes perfect!

It can take a lot of patience and training. If your pup doesn't get it right away take a break or try again the next day. With repetition your pup should be high-fiving in no time.

I tried to do this but it did not work :( my dog just kept on going crazy and licking my hand but he did not put the paw.
With practice, it's possible!
so what should one do if the dog just keeps licking using his mouth and never lifts his foot, and after some time he got bored and moves away.
We would suggest moving your hand away from the pup showing them the treat again and then closing your hand again to regain their attention.
Thanks! What ended up working was initially manually lifting one of his paws onto my open hand, kept supplying treats on there and repeating the keyword “shake hand”. It took one day like this and then next day I tried your suggestion (closed hand with treat inside) and he lifted his own paw!! Thanks.

If you dog gets confused show him where the treat is and give him time to learn.
I did try that but now I’m showing him the treat in one hand and him giving me his paw to see if that works

Hey there Celine! Don't let your pup have that treat until after they've lifted their paw. If your pup doesn't immediately lift their paw, you can guide them and then mark it with praise.
