  • Having your dog be able to close a door, a cupboard or a drawer is a pretty handy trick to teach your dog. But what if you could teach them these things plus Shake-A-Paw, High-Five, and Wave all at the same time? In this video, we will show you how to train your puppy to high five and each of the tricks are all in the same shaping progression, and they are actually really easy to teach to your dog! How helpful would it be if you could just ask your dog to close a door for you? Or shake a paw then wave to your friends and family members as they leave your house? Talk about an impressive series of tricks right? In this video, we will show you how to teach your puppy how to shake a paw, then we progress to teaching your puppy how to high-five. The next step is to teach your dog to wave, then simply transfer that trick to teaching your dog to close a door or a drawer or cupboard! Teaching your dog tricks is a great way to build a relationship and boost your dog's confidence!

    I have been trying to teach my boston terrier shake her paw for two months no way, my dog just looked at me. I watch this video, my dog was giving me her paw in one day. I was so shock. I have learned so much watch McCann dogs. Things I use everyday with my dog, like using the house line, which is a very practical application, that is worth knowing.

    Thank you for also communicating with us so clearly. I didn't know that I shouldn't say NO if my puppy didn't do the trick correctly and the reason why I shouldn't say No. I will follow this humane way of training in all of different training I do from now on. You are brilliant!

    Kayl - I've been learning SO MUCH from your McCann Dog Training channel and appreciate every teaching video you all share. I started recording my training sessions with my 5mo old GSD as a learning tool for myself, and have noticed that I say "yes", "YES", and "YAAASSS" in the same excitements and tones as you! LOL!!! I never noticed until I started recording! Thank you for sharing your ways!

    Hello Kayl, I watched this video on how to train my pup for a pawshake. Your method worked. I did it together with him for 20 minutes and he started to lift his paw. Not perfect yet but it is progressing well. Thank you for your video and sharing it.

    I wish you would show this with a dog that has never learned how to shake a paw at all. This dog already knows this and that makes it a lot easier to teach to shake the other paw. My dog won't lift his paw off the floor no matter how I hold the treat above his head. If it's too low, he lies down and gives up when the treat is not released. If it's too high, he jumps up and almost bites my fingers off. I'm at over a dozen treats with no progress. My previous dog I was able to teach this very easily.

    Hello and thanks for all of your videos. You all seem like a great bunch of folks. I've been searching for a vid to address and issue I'm having with my newly adopted Hank (we've been together nearly 2 months now and it' going pretty great so far). When I'm sitting anywhere and petting him he eventually will put one paw up on my leg, or arm, or the furniture. He's not the smallest dog, so sometimes his paw lands just right and it hurts or scratches the heck out of something. That's no real big deal, but the problem is after that first paw lands, the second is sure to follow. After the second paw lands, his entire upper half is laying across you. Believe it or not, from there he tries to get further into your lap. I have continually tried to correct the behavior, and that means starting with telling him no when that first paw comes up. How do I stop or transform this behavior? I feel like I'm rejecting his affection, because that's all he seems to want. He's a lovable dog and I feel like Cruella for putting the brakes on some good petting/cuddle time with my dog. Sorry about the long message, but I hope to hear from you! Thanks soooo much.

    Kayl help! I was hoping to find an off switch for this. My dude Bruce was a jumper until we watched Steve's video with leash pressure. But it doesn't stop him from pawing and he does that all the time. I give an 'ah!' when he does, and say off, and I try to prevent those chances but he still finds a way. Often I try to give him another position to be in instead, like go lay down, but then he will still paw me then just head towards that position

      Hi there, Enakoii! Be careful that your lure isn't too far up above your puppy's head. Make your lure a slow deliberate and easy to follow guide into the correct position. Happy Training! ~Ken

    Hello, you seem to be a very skilled & effective trainer however a bit of constructive criticism, you speak & go so quickly that I couldnt even figure out exactly what you were doing. It went from shake a paw on the left (?) paw then to touch on right? Or I dont even know. Now I am from the East coast, Jersey to be specific, & I constantly am being told I speak very fast but, i have to say, you went so quickly i was lost within the first 3 minutes. Please, please know I found you very appealing to watch & you seem to be very good at what you do..I only comment because I would like to learn from your videos, just found it very difficult. Thank you for all the time you put into teaching!! Have a great day!!

    So i have a 6 month old Dane who needs to learn to paw. I tried this method but it was very slow going and he kept standing or as soon as he lifted his paw and i grabbed it, he would flop to the ground. Is there any way to combat those things or a different way to teach shake?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As adorable as Dane's are when they're growing, they do take a little longer to develop good body awareness, and sometimes coordination during their growth phase. Position of your lure over his head will take a little more precision, to avoid him standing up onto all 4 feet. The other thing you'll need to do, is mark the moment he lifts that foot. Use your "yes" as soon as he lifts that big paw off of the ground and reward him for it. Don't be in a hurry to take hold of his paw. Even a pat onto your palm may be enough for him to begin to understand what he's being rewarded for. With your good placement of your food lure, and great timing with your "yes" when he`s lifting that paw higher each time! If you'd like to try another exercise where he can focus on body awareness, you could try a shaping exercise! You can be as creative as you'd like, and you could even focus on having him use his paws in a unique way to teach him to focus on that body part. Remember to start simple, and keep it fun. Here's a link to a shaping video you can try. In this video we is a small basket as the target, but you can accomplish the exact same thing with a towel placed on the ground! th-cam.com/video/qG0i176vTUk/w-d-xo.html
      Have fun with it! Happy Training! ~Ken

      They use the word "yes" instead. I do this now too. Clickers get lost or forgotten but every person can say the word YES to mark a dog's correct behaviour. Plus it's more interactive and fun!

    What you said about not lifting their paw to teach them to give their paw is incorrect. I’ve done it with every single one of my dogs 7 of them I’ve never had to use your strenuous way of teaching them it seems you do a lot more than you have to

    • @mixedmedialife7916
      @mixedmedialife7916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have trained 100,000 dogs and owners over the years. Their methods may be different than you use, but can't really say they are incorrect! One of the rules of operant conditioning is to reward a behaviour that is offered naturally or on its own. So much comes from this.
