Most Imperial Admirals, Moffs and Generals were selfish, ambitious and greedy. This is what Palpatine played off of by pitting all his minions ambitions against each other. It's why the Empire dissolved so quickly into Warlordism after Endor. I'd love to see some videos on the big Warlords like Kaine, Zsinj, the Teradocs, Delvardus and Harrsk

He kept them busy scheming against each other for his favor so they could supplant him that they seldom got to act against him personally. It wasn't efficient at all from a governing standpoint and actively hampered military and civil coordination against the Rebellion. It was designed to only function with Palpatine at its head FOR Palpatine. This led to the Imperial Civil War and later the Imperial Mutiny. Zaarin's Insurrection, The Grand Moff coup, Motti, Jerec and Jax all were results of the Sith way of running things.

I'm sad that Thrawn: Treason does not use any of the known Grand Admirals as a rival for Thrawn, like Zaarin or Tigellinus. Instead, a new one called Savit is created.

Compared to the cunning and tactical prowess high-ranking officials and top brass of Imperial Navy demonstrated in the Legends, First Order seems to be merely play-pretending war. They even got costumes (mostly) right.
Tarkin had similar thoughts in the EU/Legends novel, Death Star Then he realized that Palpatine probably had this covered, either by a self destruct button that only had access to or a version of Order 66 for the personnel on the Death Star that only Palpatine knew about

Motti attains control of the DS, Vader is off doing an errand for Palpatine,few days go buy and he's having dinner, Motti remarks about a dif spice on his meal and asks what it is, the server says 'little something from our emperor', Motti collapses dead. We have to presume there were safeguards in place along many ppl serving Palpatine to remove anyone trying to take control of the DS. We should also presume Vader had a way to enter the DS covertly w secret codes that'd grant access to any of his shuttles or fighters, once on board Motti would be dead within a few hrs at most, Vader would def cut him down the saber. If Motti managed to get to a shuttle or TIE Vader would have it blown to pieces, maybe compromising a critical system by force alone and BOOM. Hitler and Rommel had ppl in place just in case.
My thought is that he would quickly go mad with power pushing everyone away because in his mind they wanted to take what he had for them self, and thus be quickly destroyed by the rebellion
I wouldn't be surprised if Palpatine could remotely self destruct or shut down the Death Star as a fail safe or if he had hidden agents on the station ready to be activated and kill any coup leader.

The Imperial Fleet would be mobilized to retake or destroy the Death Star then. As powerful as the Death Star is, it cannot fight off the entire fleet for long. The Empire likely know of more weaknesses than the one we all saw or things that can be a weakness. They have millions of proton torpedoes Luke's shot was 1-1,000,000. Even without the Force one would get through. They also have millions of boarding craft and endless troops. Wouldn't take long to either cut a hole in or take advantage of the many access points for ingress and egress. The fleet has the numbers and resources to do the job.

In deleted scenes for A New Hope, there was a subplot of Vader keeping an eye on Tarkin for the same reason.

Hyperspace lanes where massive and could fit multiple ships. The navi computer onboard ships made the calculations needed for safe passage.
