I would believe that a better explanation was he felt safe where he was, that he thought Vader wouldn’t choke him because of his position and job in the Death Star
2 things- First, Vader was right about the Death Star. "This technological monstrosity you've built pales in significance next to the power of the Force." The Death Star was destroyed by a force sensitive pilot using Jedi or Force Focus to bullseye 2 proton torpedoes down a 2 meter shaft- indeed, the most powerful weapon ever created was destroyed by the force. Second, they need a fan made caption in that scene in the movie where Motti first starts choking with the caption reading thusly "It was at this moment that he knew he had f*cked up!"
Let us not forget the shot would have been impossible if not for the force being used. It was an exhaust port, as in it blew out air from the core. More importantly, it was THE exhaust port, and about two meters long. Air pushed out parallel to the Death Star, therefore there is a bend for the exhaust port, of 90 degrees, and pumped out all the exhaust from the furl source of perhaps one of, if not the, largest engine ever. Correct me if I am wrong, but the core should be producing exhaust as it burns up fuel in order to run the generators, which are massive, to power the entire station. If not for the force, the torpedoes should have been pushed back, or at least hit the back of the bend in the port, and created a hole, possibly taking out the top of the port. You would need at least two ships, both being orthogonal to one another, to take down the ship, one to destroy the port, the other to shoot a torpedo down into the core.
Don't forget it was an exaustion pipe of which everything that enters the hole would be blown out and the end of the exaustion pipe is bent becouse of a protective thing over it. The force is just too powerful to mess with.
The actual quote is: Don't be too proud of this technological terror you have constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is i͟n͟s͟i͟g͟n͟i͟f͟i͟c͟a͟n͟t next to the power of the Force.
You have to love the fact that Motti and Han both didn’t understand the force exists, despite them both appearing to be over 20 years old (at least old enough they would have lived during the time of the Jedi and order 66).
Also, he's an admiral in the most powerful military force at the time, I'm sure that got to his head. The galaxy is a big place so even hearing "reports" or "rumors" of Vader's power would be put off as Solo would say, "Simple tricks and nonsense".
You failed to mention that he was the nephew of Tarken and while Vader held a vague position as the emperor's enforcer Tarken was the one in charge of the deathstar and so in Motti's mind put Tarken above Vader. The radio drama of New Hope also has Motti whispering words of ambition into his uncles ear. Telling him that not even the emperor could do anything to oppose them.
Thanks for explaining Admiral Motti and his miss judgement of Vader's ability . My assessment of the relationships is one of so much arrogant attitudes in the Empire the left hand does not know what right hand is doing.
Ironic that Vader pittied Motti. If he had been force sensitive, Motti would have theoretically been the perfect Sith apprintance. His raw seething temper, coupled with his lusrlt for power would have seen him under Vader, rather his temporary force punching bag in episode four.
Now you got me curious: What if Vader encountered force resistance from Motti in that moment, and that was why he allowed him to live? What if he then decided to make Motti his apprentice, for whatever reason?
Its worth pointing out in the original 1976 novelization Vader is describe as a General, loyal to the emperor but not necessarily Palpatine's right hand man. This is the original reason Vader is taking orders from Tarkin the local viceroy. So all the other Generals and Admirals are Vaders peers officially and its not shocking they might talk back to him, even if he is personally closer to the Emperor and can get away with chocking someone in a heated argument. Its not till empire strikes back when all the senior officers are dead Vader chokes subordinates left and right.
Its been a very long time since I read it but wasn't it implied that the Emperor was weak and that Tarkin might supplant him since he held the real power as commander of the Death Star?
@@mikedeck8381 Yea! or rather he had really stepped back and was letting his the Tarkins of the galaxy run things. I like to think that after the conference, Tarkin took Motti aside and said, "if you ever disrespect my lead enforcer again, then the next time he chokes you, I won't stop him. Do I make myself clear?"
Everyone remembers Motti, no one ever remembers that one subordinate Vader had who openly questioned his competence without even getting a verbal response from him.

Even discounting all of his obvious physical advantages against an unarmed opponent, Vader could just have had him shot out an airlock in the night. Nobody would ever ask any questions.
There's also the simple film explanation that the audience had to see the power Vader could wield and so constructed a scene with a cannon-fodder mook lipping off.
@@pyxl666 i partially agree, it's interesting to build up characters as much as possible to make them seem realistic. Take Maul, originally intended to simply get rid of Qui Gon, making Obi-wan the master of Anakin, before dying in the film. He went from a silent forgettable character to a unique tragic antagonist.
There is certain protocols to be followed in a council meeting, particularly against physical altercations even if using "space magic" , you're supposed to use your words, not your fists.
It was a good moment narratively to show off Vader’s skill, foreshadowing the fall of the Death Star, ANd demonstrate some of the petty side of the Imperial Military. But an in universe explanation is nice too. :)
Also, the Emperor had put Vader *under* the command of Grand Moff Tarkin. Subsequently, when Tarkin told Vader to release Motti from the Force Choke, he had to. Make no mistake, if it weren't for this, Motti would have died where he sat.

Apparently, he didn’t know the POWER of the light side either! Ironic that Tagge escaped, and was actually Vader’s boss for a bit!
7 minutes to simply say... Motti was angry with Tagge, and his anger got the best of him during this debate, but he only lashed out at Vader the way he did because he wasn't fully aware of Vader's command of the Force.

It is interesting to see just how far Vader's character has changed over the years. In the original movie, he has some precognition and telekinesis, but in most recent comics, he's a walking superhero who can take on Battlestations alone and on foot. The description given in the novel Death Star is based off the old version of Vader, so it's not really comparable to his current status
The issue here is the inconsistency between the "old" Star Wars and the "new". Remember - Jedi are almost forgotten and the force seen as religious dogma at best, and as tricks at worst. This was before later movies made Vader out to be a constantly force-choking baddie that every imperial officer knew of and understood. More to the point, the scene was a part of the movie (along with Han's comment on "hokey religions" and Obi-Wan's telling of the recent history) showing that the Force was all but forgotten, and the Jedi and Sith passed into legend. Motti simply didn't believe that Vader had "magic" any more than we would believe that a local priest could call down god's wrath with a lightning from a clear sky (or any sky for that matter). It is kind of odd, of course, considering that Motti should have remembered the clone wars and the fall of the jedi order, but then all that wasn't thought out yet. So, inconsistency in storytelling. ;-)
So, interesting correlation on this subject in Disney's timeline. The book "from a certain point of view" is episode 4 told from the perspective of side characters. The force choke is told from Motti's POV. He actually files a formal complaint against Vader for forcing his religious views, for Vader's admonishing them for being proud of the DS, and go so far as to point out that Vader had to take several steps towards him in order to choke him.
Not everyone has seen a Jedi or know what they can and were capable of doing before the clone wars and even lesser know what a Sith even is. Which brings up a good point how many people in the galaxy know about the history of the past. Like there were no museums on Coruscant or holo shows that talked about the galactic past on a galaxy wide broadcast? in layman's terms Star wars in universe the History channel.
I only watch Legends lore videos these days, and yours remain some of my favorites. Idk, I just do not care about Disney canon anymore personally. Either way, great video. Just recently finished reading Death Star myself, and absolutely loved it. I found all characters to be interesting to follow, especially growing to like Nova Stihl and Atour Riten. The only thing that took me out of the book ever so slightly was when Vader switched from his book dialogue to his movie lines. It just felt... a bit off to me for some reason. But I loved how much it added to ANH and the Death Star in general. Speaking of novels, you plan to do more reviews? Hell, I'd watch an unscripted video of you just giving your thoughts and feelings on a book. You just come across as a huge fan of the books and I would love to hear your thoughts on more of them. Keep up the good work!
To think that some 40+ years ago George Lucas and/or whoever else was involved just wrote the whole thing as "let's have one guy get lippy with Vader so he can demonstrate his choke thing".
I know at the time they didn't know if there would be anymore movies after A New Hope but I would have loved to see Motti as the commandant on the second Death Star. A more humble and submissive man who saw the error in thinking Darth Vader was a joke....
at 2:50 or so, it just awesome to think of the immense size of the death star as our narrarator mentions how they meet in the main conference room. look at the ships outside even with elevators, think how long it took to get from one corner to another in the death star
The Galaxy was advance in many ways and archaic at the same time. The archaic came from information transferring was lacking behind most things, information corruption and manipulation was high, and most living beings in the Galaxy didn't know what the Force actually was about. During the thousand years of peace the Jedi where in whole only in the 10,000+ range which compared to Old Republic era is dramatically less. Most only know very basic stuff about Jedi in that they where warrior monks, philosophers, and later military leaders. By the time of the Clone Wats most of the Senate representatives didn't know what Sith where or the difference between them and Jedi. This in part was also a failure on the Jedi. In their efforts to stop and eradicate the Dark Side and Sith they would publicly redact all information or knowledge which in turn helped the Sith out in the shadows. It's also how Palpatine was able to end the legislative laws that prevented Sith and Force users from entering politics during the time of Darth Bane. It's also a way he set up the idea that the Jedi would try to take over since it meant after a thousand years they could have political power as well. The common belief during and after the Clone Wars was that Jedi had some kind of foresight and where skilled to an inhuman level with their signature lightsaber. It's possible Motti never actually witnessed the feats of Jedi and to many after the Jedi where denounced and hated all the amazing feats where believed by public as Jedi propaganda.
@@austinchandler3079 The other thing to take note of during and after the Clone Wars is Palpatine was propagating the lies of the Jedi and their false religion of the Force. Anyone who was found Force Sensitive after the Rise of the Empire where seen as like demonic beings or witches. Family, close friends, neighbors, and etc where rewarded for bringing forth Force Sensitive and Jedi while those that didn't would be slaughtered by said Jedi/Force Sensitive according to Imperial News. Motti was a somewhat younger brash moron compared to his peers in the same room who had more previous contact with the Jedi and Force Users. Motti also was the worse kind of ass kisser to the Emperor in regard in believing the lies without actually having any thought put into it. In that room he would been seen as the most inexperience and new generation of Imperial Leadership that only cared about themselves by betraying others and appease the Emperor.
Might be worth mentioning that despite it being only 20 years since the fall of the Jedi, the limited exposure to the force that people would have had would all have been from the light-side users, the Jedi, as the Sith were still in hiding. This violent application of the force likely would still surprise anyone who had only previously seen the force applied by a Jedi.

Back in the 90s, I wrote a star wars fan fiction centered around Thrawn, called Champion of the Empire. In the above scene with Motti, I wrote Thrawn into the it. He was right behind Tarken and Vader when a private called attention. He wasn't that loud, because only Thrawn stopped to read the new reports from Tantooine, while Tarken and Vader entered the room interrupting Tag. Thrawn, upon reading the updated report, dismissed the junior officer, and took his seat at the table. Upon Thrawn's entry, Tarken threw him a glare and that followed him to his seat, while settling his officers. "The regional governors now have direct control of their territories." Once Thrawn took his seat, Tarken resumed. "Fear will keep the local systems in line, fear of this battlestation." Motti then interrupted Thrawn before he could relate the updated search for the DS plans.
You gotta love a guy who does his own wetwork. Vader is a real hands on manager (that was a pun, for he doesn't actually have to touch anyone in order to force choke). He doesn't stay on the Executive ship. He goes down on the transport, boards the rebel ship, and demands results. He goes down to the Hoth base himself. I love that about him. Vader does his own wetwork.
It's interesting to look at this through the long lens of 'canon' and backstory that was filled in much later, but it's still a retro explanation of his motivation. If you didn't have the 'canon' explanation, why would he do it?

This was so early on that it seems to me that Vader didn’t have the same high position that we see in empire strikes back. I don’t think Vader had any authority over the admirals and generals as he was just the enforcer until governor Tarkin went down with the Death Star and it seemed that this allowed Vader to take his place and do as he so pleased! But yes he didn’t know the power of force nor understand it. I found it interesting that tarkin ordered Vader to release him, so he wasn’t in any real danger it would seem.
I think these videos work because you incorporate the highers echelons of the Empire - we get to hear what Tarkin, Motti, Tieg, Veers, Ozzel and Piett are all thinking. You actually give some credence to Vader as well.
Can you do planets in the Star Wars universe that forbids and despises Force Sensitives and Jedis entering it or living there please? I'm pretty sure we might did not see any info covered it.

@Nazik Adam It was a paraphrase, and the gist is the same. Dude was talking sh*t to the wrong person.
The actual quote is:
Don't be too proud of this technological terror you have constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is i͟n͟s͟i͟g͟n͟i͟f͟i͟c͟a͟n͟t next to the power of the Force.
I like it when Vader walked toward Motti like, "Okay, here we go..."
I know why he did that. He found Vader’s lack of faith in the battle station quite disturbing.
Ray
Too bad Vader would have killed him in a way to secure his position.
Now you got me curious: What if Vader encountered force resistance from Motti in that moment, and that was why he allowed him to live? What if he then decided to make Motti his apprentice, for whatever reason?
@@theguybehindyou4762 Motti was spared because Tarkin outranked Vader so he had to do what Tarkin said, and Tarkin said to stop

@ImperialistOpinions LOL!!!
The actor that played him was at a comic book store opening near Atlanta about 10 years ago.

Do I make myself clear?"
because he was too proud of the death star to recognize the TRUE TECHNOLOGICAL TERROR IN THE ROOM.
He was lucky that was all he got! A Sith will suffer no fools within in circle!
I'm sure he'd made a hell of an example of Motti if he'd dared do something like that again

Everyone remembers Motti, no one ever remembers that one subordinate Vader had who openly questioned his competence without even getting a verbal response from him.
Who and where?
@@marrqi7wini54 When Vader first meets Leia on the Tantive, when he was done talking to her one of his subordinates basically read him the riot act and he just shrugged it off instead of attacking him.
@@ZontarDow I heard it was the guy's, Daine Jir, job to remind Vader of potential pitfalls that could harm the Empire and he also remains respectful the entire time and it's condescending like Motti and it more asking Vader what his plans are to prevent the Senate from learning about the attack on Leia's ship and reminds him that she's going to be a hard nut to crack and Vader then instructs him to make it seem that they only were answering a distress signal from Leia's ship and everyone was dead when they arrived.
It all boils down to him being completely incompetent
You never talk back to Vader under any circumstance
Even discounting all of his obvious physical advantages against an unarmed opponent, Vader could just have had him shot out an airlock in the night. Nobody would ever ask any questions.
Motti was a fool to disrespect Vader. His lack of faith is offensive.
Vader got all triggered. 'Did you just assume my faith, you force-o-phobic bigot? Reeee!'

There's also the simple film explanation that the audience had to see the power Vader could wield and so constructed a scene with a cannon-fodder mook lipping off.
Yep and that's the complete boring, non-lore explanation that everyone knows and nobody cares much about. So good job :)
@@pyxl666 i partially agree, it's interesting to build up characters as much as possible to make them seem realistic. This is one of my favorite scenes. I only wished that Governor Tarkin, wouldn't stop Lord Vader from killing him.
There is certain protocols to be followed in a council meeting, particularly against physical altercations even if using "space magic" , you're supposed to use your words, not your fists.
[ Vader enters chat room ]

It was a good moment narratively to show off Vader’s skill, foreshadowing the fall of the Death Star, ANd demonstrate some of the petty side of the Imperial Military.
But an in universe explanation is nice too. :)
Also, the Emperor had put Vader *under* the command of Grand Moff Tarkin. Subsequently, when Tarkin told Vader to release Motti from the Force Choke, he had to. Make no mistake, if it weren't for this, Motti would have died where he sat.
You love making these videos. We love watching these videos. Motti doesn’t know the POWER of the dark side! He did briefly, until he was obliterated in the Death Star explosion.
It's obvious Motti didn't watch Rogue One
That was my favorite scene of rogue one.

@@streetkombat6088 Yes! I love Star Wars Theory too. He is a cool dude!
Juan Catalan Oh yes indeed!
This extra context makes that scene so much deeper now.
For despair.... man, this video was awesome. I loved it!
So, inconsistency in storytelling. ;-)
Motti disrespected Vader. He mocked Vader and got rightly slapped down.
Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing
Admiral: harder daddy
Vader: What
Motti: 😳
It's safe to say after that choke he didn't have any lack of faith
Because he thought because he got away with not going to your reading club
Before the force choke, Anakin used the force poke. It was Padme's favorite.
So basically, he was pissed off and clueless.
Never a good combination.
Personally, the best part of the scene is how Tarkin talked to Vader.
Right, or it was a device in the script to show the audience Vader’s power and lack of patience for insubordination.
How do so few people just years after the jedi's collapse not really know about the force??
@@VanTesla Very interesting and that makes good sense.

"The regional governors now have direct control of their territories."
Once Thrawn took his seat, Tarken resumed. "Fear will keep the local systems in line, fear of this battlestation."
Motti then interrupted Thrawn before he could relate the updated search for the DS plans.
Guess everyone in the room but Admiral Motti knew Vader could force choke people. He sure was choking them out in Empire.🤣
Where did you get that awesome pic at 5:10
Thanks again for sharing the excellent video.
Can someone explain to me if the Death Star was able to travel at light speed? Like the ships?
Otherwise isn't the whole weapon kinda pointless??
All these years, I had no idea he was an admiral.
This video could have been 10 seconds. I've seen some padding in videos before but this one is on another level.
It's interesting to look at this through the long lens of 'canon' and backstory that was filled in much later, but it's still a retro explanation of his motivation. If you didn't have the 'canon' explanation, why would he do it?

I love Wilhuff's face while motti's getting.. "oh shit vader"
I guess you could say he underestimated his power
I recall before A New Hope, Vader spends his time doing odd jobs for the Emperor (e.g. bringing down a big mob boss). Motti might not have been around Vader much.
The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the high ground.
