When I do the apps for face recognition I usually get Jeanne Tripplehorn, Jennifer Morrison or Marcia Gay Harden . I don’t know how much that helps for actual body type but there might be an indication.
I like how you're moving away from the Kibbe terminology as your philosophy does differ a bit from his and using the same names he uses can cause confusion. I've tried to learn by being in the Strictly Kibbe groups on Facebook and taking his personal instructions but I keep going back to your channel. What you offer is just a lot more clear, to the point and easier to grasp.
I agree this helps. The Kibbe system is amazing but there is always room to evolve . At this point I find that body type system more of a starting point but it does get confusing. His early examples fit the terms he used but many have the lines but don’t necessarily fit that image or personality. I think it’s good to move away from that and concentrate on what our actual bone structure is . You could be the same type in Kibbe from another person but have a different style and personality. It gets confusing so following the lines is better.
Hi, Im he owner of Style by Nature and I just want to say that Kibbe is good in many ways, but his system is incomplete because two essences are missing: Ethereal and Ingenue. Maybe that is one of the reasons why he was so bad in typing celebrities. There is nothing wrong with the names of the essences, I think. I still use his names. But if you want to figure out your style type, don't take any tests. They don't work. The best way to do that is to take a picture of yourself and compare it against pictures of different clothes. If you can be objective you will see what lines and shapes will harmonize with your natural lines of your face. For instance, you can use my style boards for this. www.stylebynature.fi/style-types
You just took something quite complicated and made it really easy to understand. That's the hardest thing one can try to do. Well done! The difficult thing is to train the eye to see how the bones look. It just takes practice, trying to look at the bones of as many people you can.
I think it was Albert Einstein who said: ”If you can’t explain it simply maybe you don’t understand it well enough.” Certainly Merriam has a remarkable ability to explain complex and subtle nuances clearly...and illustrate everything with such great real world examples. A joy to follow and learn!
I really love these new names for the body types, the newer names really fits the modern time because i feel awkward calling myself a theatrical romantic and so might others with different body types ❤️
ah yeah I remember when I was first starting out, TR was one of my least favorite names because I'm an introvert and aim to be the opposite of theatrical! It's just not how I'd identify.......can skew things! Anyway I ended up not being TR, but I thought about it like everyone does when they start!
I'm glad you took basics from different systems and made a cohesive and original theory... bravo! :) EDIT: It's like you have taken people out of boxes by nudging them to see what they have instead of what they don't.
The more I think about kIbbe and body typing and the more I think you're system is actually more objective than kibbe's and makes more sense, I wish you would post more on TH-cam like before 😊
"Beveled" is such a perfect way to explain Natural bones (I mean really, are other bones UNnatural??) Thank you for all your work. Took me forever to see (& accept) I'm FN (or Beveled/Sharp). Love it. Thank you
I was really looking forward to your first video on body geometry, so it really put a smile on my face to see it pop up in my feed! To be honest, I'm having a really slow and burnt out day, but your videos really inspire me, so it came at just the right time. :D I especially love the analogy of a fruit salad vs a fruit smoothie for explaining the mixed vs blended body type, and I like how you mentioned that the mixing can come in all sorts of different ways. I feel as if it can be easy to get caught up in the idea of mixed body types always being quite short and childlike, so then you get people who are mixed but don't feel that way, so they're confused about which body type they have. I'm looking forward to future videos on body geometry! :D
I’m definitely the first one. Long narrow bones. I’m short though, 5 foot 4. I’m going to check out your channel to see if you have more specific tips for that body type
This is why it’s important to me so I can wear the lines that are more flattering. I feel better that way. I like the new terms . The fruit salad vs the fruit smoothie is perfect. My vertical line is basically a V shape . My shoulders are broader than my hips although not drastically different . My waistline is little to no definition. So it’s little confusing! But I look forward to the future videos.
I could be as well. I know it’s funny when I stand next to a taller person I can feel much shorter but next to someone shorter or similar height I can sometimes feel much bigger due having a larger frame.
@@kellie8468 It helped me to look at a photo of myself next to one of my friends, who I know is a classic, and see how much LONGER my bones were. We're the same height, but my limbs are longer, my shoulders are wider, and I look taller / more present than she does, even if we're standing next to each other.
That’s a good idea. Thank you. I know I can tell the difference easier when comparing to others. I walk into the supermarket and automatically start recognizing the differences with other people.
Mine too, V. I'm short but look tall. I'm wide but my bones are tiny. From a distance people guess me 6" taller while up close I'm always getting told what a tiny thing I am.
Looking at group photos helps with choosing your Kibbe type. In a recent photo I noticed that I don’t look my best on tight clothes. Not because they don’t fit - it’s the right size and naturally thin. But my bones look too big, like I’ve outgrown my clothes. I also noticed that I would better in clothes that complement my longer vertical line, so no crop tops or ankle jeans for me. I also think I would look better in monochromatic looks. Sounds like I’m some sort of beveled body type. I’m 5’7” and I have some soft facial features so maybe rounded beveled?
Yay I’m a beveled beauty! This was so clear and concise to understand. It’s very helpful when dressing and curating a stylish closet that will be in harmony with my natural bone structure.
CONGRATS dear Merriam on your own Style System! 😍💜 As a longtime fan, I'm really proud of and happy for you! This is wonderfully fresh and SO much better... You metamorphosed the archaic Kibbe (et al)! Ha ! Fantastic job :) Thanks very much for this fascinating journey. It's excellent and hopefully far from over 💜💜💜
The question I have is how do we determine the bone structure when we are not skinny. I mean our bones might be sharp but the smooth skin on top might look like it’s rounded
Same, I can’t see my bones at all it’s so confusing because then I think I’m this type and try the styles that are supposed to look good and I just look off. I just don’t know what my bones are up to under there. Celebs aren’t good examples tbh they look nothing like real people do.
I mean..being at a healthy body weight should be able to determine what it is. Don't have to be skinny skinny but if you really can't feel where youre bones are at
This is a really good explanation, thank you so much. The change of the names was a great idea, it is so much better to understand without the noise of the old heavily biased names. I love that the types aren't connected to character traits or ideas of femininity/masculinity any more! I'm pretty sure I would have figured out my type much sooner, had it always been like that! :-D
I think this is your best video ever! Well, you do have some amazing ones in the Club too! Like the one on Lip color for Cool and Delicate Skin Undertone, and the one on jewelry for Cool and Delicate, where you so intelligently explains the art of color analysis and theory applied. I really recommend the Club, everyone! 😊👌💜
Great job!! I like this a lot. Those categories are very easy to understand. It would be nice to have pictures with side-to-side body type for different body part. Like a scale of 5 for the shoulders or hands.
I'm thinking of a Tinker Bell / absinth fairy cos for Halloween. Do you guys think it's a good idea for me as a TR?? If only Merriam did a video on costumes for body types 😉
i think it would be fabulous! just stay away from the disney version of tinkerbell and go with your own flowing and curvilinear lines! i love the idea of the absinth fairy!! with your coloring soft greens, lavender and a touch of pink with organza type fabrics would be beautiful!
yes that would be lovely! also as an addition, you can go for pure R lines to bring out your delicate angularity as TR, and in R lines, TR looks more cute if you want to go or that (and everything that Georgia said would be an amazing idea, the colors and everything!). In my rachel mcadams video I talk about the TR wearing R effect a tiny bit I think.
I spent hours and hours watching videos and explanations on the kibbe system, and I finally understand why the recommendations are made as they are. Duh…but finally I get it. It needs to match the style of the bone structure, matching is key.
Hey Merriam I am your long time fan. I really hope one day you can make video about plastic surgery and changing your facial bones etc. Because I am considering couple of surgeries and I am curious! Thanks for this video 💐
Can you make a video for style rules for people with ingenue essence? I narrowed my type down to Theatrical romantic and that's genuinely my type, but I look dorky, immature, and awkward when I debut in my theatrical romantic outfits. I was confused as to why I looked so silly despite studying for so long and narrowing down to TR, but Ive now realized I have ingenue essence and those style rules incorporated really suit me and fit me and I actually feel comfortable.
Hi Merriem , I think you look so pretty and your skin is glowing in cool and bright color( I believe this black top you are wearing is bright) than in muted colors. when you wear muted colors you look a bit dull. Just a opinion
I found your video on Brigitte Bardot very helpful in conjunction with this one. I'm a theatrical romantic with a couple of extra A answers than outlined in Metamorphosis, but your description of the mixed type doesn't fit either. After hearing what you had to say about Brigitte, I added long lines and extra dramatic elements to the delicate ornateness of TR and voila - perfection. You are a real talent! This is hands down the most helpful style channel I have ever come across.
Very interesting but hard to follow despite the examples (models). Maybe you can do a video comparing two structures and what they can wear (do’s and don’ts) eg: sharpened vs beveled
This was so informative, I'm glad you brought up mixed bone structures. My body is definitely sharpened (I have long limbs and look a little pointy) but my face is very round. It never felt like my head matched my body and I finally have some answers.
Thanks for this video! I've finally realized I'm mixed! That's why It was always hard to find my body type, cuz I have a little bit of everything. It wasn't obvious to me somehow haha. Great video!
Can't wait for the other videos! Also, on a side note, does this mean you'll be doing the videos where you type subscribers again? Because that would be awesome and super helpful!
This is an excellent video ! I think I am rounded bone structure type though I maybe mixed or blended .....trying to figure out. I’m 5 feet 4 inches tall with a pear/triangle shape. Do you have any videos on what to wear for runners/mixed/blended types. I’ve made a mental note on the recommendations that you have mentioned in the video but I think I need to figure out which type I am ...rounded/mixed/blended.....
I have such a hard time figuring out my body type, coloring etc...and I actually have a hard type figuring out anyone's type or coloring unless it is something obvious like a really short and stocky person or a very tall and thin person and coloring unless they are pink toned. I think that I will have to enlist your services on your website because I'm at a loss and have taken wardrobe courses and body type tests for years.
I love this new terminology! It’s more clear and easier to understand. Still have a hard time with typing myself, though... Will you continue with your consults through your website (it now says something like Kibbe typing)?
Would you say I am the mixed one? I have a big head and long arms with long thin hands and a long torso, which makes my legs look short. My legs are the same height as people who are shorter than I am. When sitting I look taller than I am. I have high cheekbones, but my flesh on my face isn't taut and doesn't look extremely angular. I have a small chest and abs show on my stomach. When I put on weight it always goes to my lower waist-hip-thigh area which makes me then look pear shaped.
Apart from changing the names (which you have warned us about before), this is probably the clearest video you have on the subject. Now I just need to understand why Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie are not SD's - ahem, sorry I mean softened sharpies, and I think I might be able to find my type. Leaning towards FN more and more now. Or, sharpened bevels, I guess it's called now?
At 4:15 I can see the difference much easier than I did before. Julia for sure has a width that someone like Tyra Banks does not have. Julia looks stronger (in bones) than Tyra imo.
@Periwinkleeyes70 It's not easy to see that difference, though... Especially since both Julia and Angelina has had some surgery, giving them more softness.
@@starminoui Oh that is a good example, thanks. I think Julia doesn't look all that wide on her own, but perhaps next to SD's, she will look obviously different. I can sort of see it in her shoulders, and definately her wide smile, but that's about the only places I do see it. And I have the same problem with myself. Angelina is even harder to see has some width than Julia does. I can agree Angelina doesn't have the obvious sharpness of a Dramatic (sorry, sharpie), but that's where the softness comes in, isn't it? Even Keira Knightley's face is lacking some obvious sharpness, she has it more in her body.
@@FannysLoA Search for a picture in swimwear of Julia, I think you can see the long and beveled bones and strong figure there. Same with Angelina, her skeleton does look quite long, strong, and blunt. Both of their cheekbones are pretty wide as well... Keira's face isn't that sharp, like maybe Tilda Swinton's, but squarish, which is also a "Sharpened type" ("Dramatic") feature. It becomes more obvious for me, if I compare different people with each other. Not only celebreties, but also if I compare myself to my friends in pictures next to each other.
@@sophie1766 I think Julia looks quite long and sharp in a swimsuit. She lacks a bit of waist definition (straight down from ribs), but I don't think she looks very strong on her own in a swimsuit. She is fit, but so is most of Hollywood. It's somehow very hard to find a swimsuit pic of Angelina where she doesn't pose heavily to exxagarate her waistline, so it's harder to tell with her, but it's the same thing with her, she looks somewhat sharp to me. I mean, certain Naturals of either category (or beveled now, sorry) look like they can take a beating with no problem, which is why I guess we see so many of them in sports. And I think both Julia and Angelina would fall over quite quickly in any kind of physical contact sport? I mean, compare them to Christie Brinkley, and you can easily see that Christie has wider bones and more muscles appearing in the flesh, even though she has a more defined waistline and probably more godgiven curves. I am able to see the types in some people, who fulfill the stereotypes (like Christie, for instance). But there's still quite a few that seem to confuse me. Like Julia, Angelina, Taylor Swift (despite Merriam's excellent video on her), and a few more. Also, some seem to have almost changed type with age which probably shows how confused I am.
This video explained a lot to me as it is so precise and simple to understand. I've always struggled with the Kibbe types as it was hard for me to answer the questions from the quiz. I mean I am composed of two bodies so to speak - I have elongated and thin bones in my upper body, but my legs, thighs and hips are wide and shorter. My hands and feet are also very long and thin. I've done the quiz many times and got different answers mainly because it's hard for me to tell if I have elongated bones or short ones. Because I have both :D According to Kibbe I fell in the Dramatic classic category, so I started incorporating more of that lines. But it didn't really work for me - I look plain and super stiff and serious. I didn't like myself. Simple jewelry doesn't work as well. But when you said Mixed bone structure in this video something clicked and I was like Finally, that's me! That's closer to gamine, I assumed previously that I might be some sort of gamine, but I was not sure as I don't look short (at least from my perspective). So thank you from the bottom of my heart for the clarity! Keep the good job! Love ya! ;*
I'm kind of lost with any body typing system by now whatsoever. All I know is that I'm more on the petite side and overly ornate, thick/structured or shapeless clothes make me look fat or emphasise my shortness. I'm not fat or thin, just average with a rounder bum. So I like my airy, lightweight bottoms and shoes that don't cut me off awkwardly above the ankle or mid-calf. I know what clothes I like on me. That's it. :)
Hi Merriam! Given this new typing system you have, do you still give consultations? I’d love to know someone’s opinion (besides my own) of my type. Thanks!
I think i am a rounded/kibbe romantic! I always wanted to look long and lean and slim and now i am starting to embrace my roundedness and shortness 😄 it's a journy but informing myself definitely helps appreciating my own (and every other) bodyshape more!
I love where this channel is going! So, are you narrowing it down to 5 types? Instead of theatrical romantic and romantic, is it just rounded and rounded, but with some sharpness?
I am a Theoretical Romantic (by the process of elimination). I think that I am a blended bone structure. Does that sound about correct? It's quite difficult to guess at the bone structure when you can't see the bones. Perhaps by xray.
Could you give a hint in which direction to go based on my description? Im 170cm tall, I dont look tall but not short either. I have long arms and legs and they look wide. My hands and feet are small and wide. I have straight kind of wide shoulders and wide hips but my waist is defined. Though I am normal weight im kind of fleshy and soft. I have a long slender neck, wide cheekbones and a bit blunt chin and my nose is kind of wide and small but rounded. My facial flesh is full and soft. Clothing with patterns overwelms me and loose unconstructed oversized clothing dont look good and I dont know why but blazers looks weired too. I guess im a blended or mixed type? I have high contrast in my natural coloring, dark eyes and dark hair but quite light skin, warm undertone and delicate coloring. Is it even possible to be a mixed type if patterns looks wrong? I think soft classic is the one? I dont know? It is confusing. 😕
You know those screen pens that football commentators use to draw on screen to show the passage of play.....Could you draw on the celebrity example photos that you use to illustrate what you mean visually? No I don’t mean draw fake moustaches! I mean for example when you say “sloping neck to shoulders”, show us what exactly that means. I need to see it to get it.
I was here driving myself positively MAD because I couldn’t find myself in any kibbe type, I love overall classic but my eyes and lips are romantic and my lines are very long even though I’m moderate height. I have thin bony hands and feet but they are quite long! There’s so much going on and all this time I was just blended wow...
Hi Merriam! I wonder if I get a consult from you, both in color and body, would you be able to find clothes that suits me both in style and colors and the clothes will be from Europe?
Is my body is sharp?if i have a theatrical romantic body type and i am short not a tall women ,and most of my answer is “A” on a body geometry test ? Or i must be a tall to have a sharp body ,i just can’t determine is i am a mixd or sharp because i am not tall ?
I feel like I have mostly beveled and blended lines but they are not long, if anything they are moderate length, however my bone structure tends towards width
I have long hands, medium length legs. I am chubby so I feel like it’s hard to tell if my bone type is one way or another. I am 5’5-5’6 ish. Roundish face Maybe I am blended?
Hi Merriam, If you remember, you got the impression that my body shape was a TR, I was ok with that until I received some disapproval from the long followers of this approach. Well this push me to consider SN as a safe zone to be. Now with your interpretation, Where I will fall if I have soft flesh over a mixture of Beveled and Rounded bones? Should I consider the Mixed body type? Thanks
Oh yes, I wanted to be sure it was you, your picture is small! It's all about whichever lines look best on you, and what you feel your best in. You could consider mixed, the way I see it, TR to SG isn't a clear line, and sort of, as you add more beveled shapes to the bone structure, you can handle more fittedness and sharpness to your silhouette.
ive really wondered for a while how body typing applies to trans people like would you be the same after transitioning? I use to think using kibbie that romantic and gamin men would be some type of natural as women but if we look at it like this Idk if it would make sense to say that someone with rounded or mixed bones would look bevelled if looked at differently. like I wonder if rounded, beveled or sharp men and women are just as sharp or rounded in bones
I think it wouldn't really change the main type for most. It could add softness vs tone though. It's hard to say how many changes some of these ladies went through, but I included some trans people in the video and I can see maybe their type could have changed within a subcategory. I think it also depends on the specific person though. If they're already kind of straddling two types, maybe a nose job or something like that might put them more into another (just as with anyone). But usually it's not the case. And with trans, I'd say it would just move them around within the subcategories (either softer or more muscular depending on the transition direction!).
I agree with Merriam on this question. As a stylist, I’ve helped style quite a few transgender women in regular (non-drag) women’s clothing. I use the body type dressing guidelines exactly the same as I would for a regular woman e.g. unstructured clothes for a bevelled body type, structured composite clothes for mixed body type, and so forth. The lines are super important, because wearing the wrong lines for the body type can easily emphasise the “masculine” components of a transgender woman’s appearance- just the same as it does for any woman - and that is definitely not something that a transgender woman is aiming for. Do transgender women lose their body type when they put on female attire? especially when they gender- modify their face and body shape with hormones, surgery and fillers? If a man has noticeably wide shoulders, that feature is still there when he becomes a transgender woman. But as I’m sure you would have seen, many men do NOT have noticeably wide shoulders (the shoulders may still be wider than the female average, but they don’t LOOK wide - which is the important thing. Their body in its natural male form may appear more ”boyish” or “feminine” (e.g some men with Asian heritage) so they would be classified in other body types. Shoulder width is one example of a number of body features which don’t and can’t change in gender transition- one’s height, neck width, depth of ribcage, limb length, size and shape of hands and feet - which mean that the core body type will stay the same. Where do transgender women fall in the circle of variation WITHIN each body type? A transgender woman will usually use hormones, implants and fillers to increase the “soft flesh” on her body so that its appearance falls within usual female parameters. She may also have bone surgery on her face and other body parts to reduce the “sharpness” or "bevelledness”of her skeletal lines. However as she still has a predominantly masculine skeleton and proportions, she would tend to be classified within either the sharp or bevelled sector of her body type, rather than in the rounded/ soft sector. But there are exceptions e.g. a transgender woman who is born with (say) a rounded body type, and then undergoes very far-ranging face and body modifications in the direction of a more feminine silhouette. After full transition, her body may not appear “slightly sharp” or “slightly beveled” so she may fall into another sector within her body type. Hope that make sense Elijah- and that I’ve used the new body type terminology correctly :).
I know you asked this forever ago, but as what seems like a soft/short ftm thank you for asking this, I was hyperventilating. there isn't much on body typing for men.
@@kodyghost i know what you mean, after all this time just applying the lines that go with your body type as male or female gives the same amount of harmony, like as a TR male if you look at my youtube and see how I look though you could probably put my hair or anything I wear on a TR female its just as harmonious on me
I know this is not about Kibbe but I feel like I can see all types in it, apart from Natural and Soft Natural. As a SN myself I don't see how I'd fit in any of these options.
You describe super well the ways of adjusting lines and color to account for slight variances of yin and yang in the main categories, but what if you can't stand the base style of your category? It may just be the examples I've seen, or it may be my inability to self analyze my features in comparison to others, but I honestly despise so much of what I am recommended to wear. Do you have a video I've not stumbled across yet, or perhaps some more specific advice to this problem? The search for answers is very fun, but is gradually causing me a bit of distress as every potential seems wrong. Especially as I witness so many ladies with an "ah ha!" moment on why they were always drawn to certain styles.
I have spent the last seven hours in one of my typical research frenzies, and I am HUGELY relieved to have stumbled across your Taylor Swift video. I'd completely eliminated Gamine as an option because I am on the tall side, and then I went through a TON of old pictures, recent pictures, my entire closet, and a bunch of articles/forums. At the very least, I am comfortable enough with rocking the Gamine style to lay this to rest and stop going crazy for a few days. Probably will return to inspect it again.
I'm confused about whether I have blended or mixed features. I think my shoulders are broad, but I can't wear deconstructed clothing. I like fitted clothing, but it's hard to find fitted jackets and sweaters. I guess I do look fine in boxy jackets because they're clearly oversized.
Do you prefer wearing a lot of detail - or minimal detail? What design/which lines are you searching for in jackets and sweaters? Short, long, structured, flowy, ...? If boxy jackets look fine on you, I'd consider Mixed + sharp. How about a tailored clean shift dress?
@@sophie1766 I tend to like minimal detail, but I do love perky gamine patterns. I can never find jewelry I feel comfortable in and I have to be careful with necklines. I know large and rounded shapes look the worst on me, while sleek looks the best.
@@bunnyteeth365 Okay, that sounds more like Blended + added sharpness to me. Which necklines work best for you and which don't? I see why it's difficult, I have a similar problem... I wasn't sure if I'm Mixed or Blended for a long time either. It was a process of elimination as well as understanding, that Blended types basically can incorporate a lot of elements "of other types" to their look. Ultimately it's about what looks good on you, not if you're Blended or Mixed. Their recommendations have similarities, but what tells them apart IMO is the amount of details and the cohesion of the look.
@@sophie1766 I've been complimented on V-necks. I think scoop necks look okay. I guess what's most important about necklines is that they're sleek. I can't have too much fabric. I like having a mix and match look and sometimes wearing a lot of colors. Maybe I'm a blended type that can borrow from mixed.
@@bunnyteeth365 Maybe look into the recommendation for Blended+sharp (Dramatic Classic in Kibbe's system)? Aly Art has some really good advice for this (these are the timestamps for DCs but maybe look at regular Classics too), I think it correlates with your description. :-) th-cam.com/video/hkf33PHuD-c/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/vPcATRoZPJE/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/TzTlQJlDLfw/w-d-xo.html (there are also more specific videos about dresses, coats, pants, sweaters, jewellery...) I can also recommend the channel "Elyssa", she has some good advice, too.
I still can’t work it out 😂 I’m average height, but have a slightly longer vertical line. I have long legs, because I’m short-waisted, but I don’t have any bluntness or width in my face. I don’t have sharp features either 🤷🏻♀️
If you don't have any sharp, blutn or wide features, I think it's unlikely that you are a mixed type. They're, well, mixed, a mix of yin and yang, so you should really have some visible sharpness or bluntness (bevelled) here and there. I am a pure gamine or pure mixed type myself and while most of my features are kind of blended-tending, they still have some visible sharpness or length about them e.g. my nose, cheekbones, long legs and arms. If you'd be a soft gamine, you'd ahve some visible softness. I think it's likely you are classic, if you don't think you ahve anything visible yin or yang about you. Or you could link some pictures of your self (if you can't becoem aprt of the club), because maybe YOU don't see the sharpness or softness. Most people tend to see themselves more blended than they are, or just less blended than they are.
What if my arms and legs, hands and feet, torso, neck and even face are really long and give me the appearance of someone taller (even tough I’m petite, 5’3’’), but I don’t see sharpness in my facial bone structure? Can I still fall under the ‘sharpened’ category? I’m confused. Maybe I don’t see sharpness in my facial features because I’m still young and facial fat won’t go away any time soon. But could I still have a sharpened skeleton? Another thing that’s important to have in mind is the fact that my shoulders, elbows, all body articulations aren’t really pointy, just like with my face. I don’t know anymore. Help
I took your test for bone structure and I got "rounded" I lean more towards a natural body type..would I still be considered a natural even with a rounded bone structure?
THANK YOU, this is much more understandable than the Kibbe types and I knew immediately with this where I stand (in the contrary of the Kibbe Test ^o^""). I'm rounds, rounds, all rounds, and only fitted clothes feel beautiful on me.
Merriam, please I need your help, what if I have the beveled face of Solange Knowles and the figure of Beyonce or Helen Mirren. The difference is that may be my arms are not so flechy as Beyonce ?I would be very happy if you would help me.
All I ever can figure out for sure is that I am not in whatever category Kiera Knightly is in 😂
but are you reaaaaaaaally sure :D
same here. I just know my body shape/structure looks almost exactly like Emilia Clarke (got-daenarys)
Same, girl, same😁
When I do the apps for face recognition I usually get Jeanne Tripplehorn, Jennifer Morrison or Marcia Gay Harden . I don’t know how much that helps for actual body type but there might be an indication.
osita linguista she is a dramatic i think
I like how you're moving away from the Kibbe terminology as your philosophy does differ a bit from his and using the same names he uses can cause confusion. I've tried to learn by being in the Strictly Kibbe groups on Facebook and taking his personal instructions but I keep going back to your channel. What you offer is just a lot more clear, to the point and easier to grasp.
aw thank you Swoopiify, I'm happy my channel has been useful for you!
I find the Strictly Kibbe group so difficult to read. I'm not a native speaker and the way he writes hos essays is super hard to follow...
I've made a subreddit for that very purpose! R/MerriamStyle!
You just took something quite complicated and made it really easy to understand. That's the hardest thing one can try to do. Well done! The difficult thing is to train the eye to see how the bones look. It just takes practice, trying to look at the bones of as many people you can.
thank you yay! and yes agreed, it's not what people are used to looking at, but can sometimes be the key!
I think it was Albert Einstein who said: ”If you can’t explain it simply maybe you don’t understand it well enough.” Certainly Merriam has a remarkable ability to explain complex and subtle nuances clearly...and illustrate everything with such great real world examples. A joy to follow and learn!
You are very pedagogical and talented in teaching 🥰 What a nuanced analysis!
I'm glad you took basics from different systems and made a cohesive and original theory... bravo! :)
EDIT: It's like you have taken people out of boxes by nudging them to see what they have instead of what they don't.
I'm Kierra Knightly from the waist up and Beyonce from the waist down. And that sounds a lot cooler than it really is lol.
Same! 🙋🏻♀️😆
Romantic?
@@burgermister7580 definitely not. If I was romantic, I'd have some boobs.
@@ClaraBell3452 I'm sure there's a few flat chested romantics
Veronica aaa romantic would not have shoulders like Keira knightly
As a 5’7 person who looks best in soft gamine lines, you helped me understand where the shortness/petiteness comes from 🙏
The more I think about kIbbe and body typing and the more I think you're system is actually more objective than kibbe's and makes more sense, I wish you would post more on TH-cam like before 😊
"Beveled" is such a perfect way to explain Natural bones (I mean really, are other bones UNnatural??) Thank you for all your work. Took me forever to see (& accept) I'm FN (or Beveled/Sharp). Love it. Thank you
Make way more sense than previous names!
I was really looking forward to your first video on body geometry, so it really put a smile on my face to see it pop up in my feed! To be honest, I'm having a really slow and burnt out day, but your videos really inspire me, so it came at just the right time. :D
I especially love the analogy of a fruit salad vs a fruit smoothie for explaining the mixed vs blended body type, and I like how you mentioned that the mixing can come in all sorts of different ways. I feel as if it can be easy to get caught up in the idea of mixed body types always being quite short and childlike, so then you get people who are mixed but don't feel that way, so they're confused about which body type they have.
I'm looking forward to future videos on body geometry! :D
Aw thank you Rebekah, that means the world to me.
I’m definitely the first one. Long narrow bones. I’m short though, 5 foot 4. I’m going to check out your channel to see if you have more specific tips for that body type
I'm glad you went with bevelled as opposed to blunted in the end! :)
Me too!!! Yay, a pretty word for us!
It actually a pretty word . I like it.
I agree! "Beveled" is the perfect word.
Bevelicious
this is so easy to understand, I'm excited🥰 also body geometry is the CUTEST name omg
wlw for hot girl meg Body Geometry is such a great name!
Same, re: shoulders and hips. I wound up a Soft Natural due to my long, wide bones.
Ha ! Fantastic job :)
Thanks very much for this fascinating journey. It's excellent and hopefully far from over 💜💜💜
Very helpful.
The name change makes it more clear and easier to understand.
The question I have is how do we determine the bone structure when we are not skinny. I mean our bones might be sharp but the smooth skin on top might look like it’s rounded
Probably, you can't really tell that way
Same, I can’t see my bones at all it’s so confusing because then I think I’m this type and try the styles that are supposed to look good and I just look off. I just don’t know what my bones are up to under there. Celebs aren’t good examples tbh they look nothing like real people do.
I am very skinny at the top, so I look more sharpish but am I really that?
I mean..being at a healthy body weight should be able to determine what it is. Don't have to be skinny skinny but if you really can't feel where youre bones are at
Lose the weight - you're probably overweight and that's unhealthy.
Not saying you are but to anyone else who might ask this
This is a really good explanation, thank you so much. The change of the names was a great idea, it is so much better to understand without the noise of the old heavily biased names. I love that the types aren't connected to character traits or ideas of femininity/masculinity any more! I'm pretty sure I would have figured out my type much sooner, had it always been like that! :-D
yay, thank you for your comment.
omg thank you!!
Great job!! I like this a lot. Those categories are very easy to understand. It would be nice to have pictures with side-to-side body type for different body part. Like a scale of 5 for the shoulders or hands.
Yes I think visuals would be very helpful.
Congratulations, Merriam! You explained it so well, the terms you use are just perfect and make the idea easily understandable!!!
@@georgiaclapham8080 Thanks 😊 You're very nice!!
yes that would be lovely! also as an addition, you can go for pure R lines to bring out your delicate angularity as TR, and in R lines, TR looks more cute if you want to go or that (and everything that Georgia said would be an amazing idea, the colors and everything!). In my rachel mcadams video I talk about the TR wearing R effect a tiny bit I think.
@@merriamstyle Thank you, Merriam!!! I always follow your advice :) Gonna be sketching my costume while rewatching the Rachel McAdams video :D
Amazing job of eschewing the old terms and replacing them with your own. Love this.
Honestly, I have completely revamped my style and finally got better understanding of what suits me, thank you SO much for your concise videos ❤
I spent hours and hours watching videos and explanations on the kibbe system, and I finally understand why the recommendations are made as they are. Duh…but finally I get it. It needs to match the style of the bone structure, matching is key.
Please keep the videos coming! With each video I understand it a little more, but I still have a long way to go.
Ty. This is so much simpler! I finally know my body type. Yay!
omg yay!
Hey Merriam I am your long time fan. I really hope one day you can make video about plastic surgery and changing your facial bones etc. Because I am considering couple of surgeries and I am curious!
Thanks for this video 💐
yes that's such a good subject!! and thank you for your support of course I remember you've been around for a while now.
Thank God David Kibbe did me in the 80s I design clothing so watching your channel gives me insight on proto types
Love it! Fruit salad vs. fruit smoothie.
Hi Merriem ,
I think you look so pretty and your skin is glowing in cool and bright color( I believe this black top you are wearing is bright) than in muted colors. when you wear muted colors you look a bit dull. Just a opinion
I like the new body classifications. Great descriptions. Another Great video!
This is hands down the most helpful style channel I have ever come across.
yay!
This is an easy to understand explanation 🌹🌹🌹🌹 Thank you for the great work 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I think it would help if you described yourself in this so that we may make a better determination! Thanks for your help.
5:29, Julia rocking a trench coat ! (See merriam ‘s video on shopping for trench coats; Julia is “flamboyant natural” in that video’s categories )
So sharp + beveled sounds a bit like flamboyant natural (: that’s me! This makes sense
I hope you are coming back to You Tube...I’m missing your videos
That was wonderful. Love your new categories!!💕
Really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these videos! Wish you the best for the new year xx
That's it. :)
Love the new naming convention
You're very smart and talented. Good job on your own nomenclature system.
Once again: You are a genius. You really "get it", better than Kibbe in my opinion. Thanks.
Hi Merriam! Given this new typing system you have, do you still give consultations? I’d love to know someone’s opinion (besides my own) of my type. Thanks!
yes, i still offer my consultations as they are! I'm thinking to update them eventually, but for now they're still up as they are. :)
@@merriamstyle I did it! So looking forward to your analysis!
You actually really helped me figure out why it never looked right on me when i tried to copy celebrities styles so thank you!
oh awesome! do you know which one you are? I also have a video called the bone structure test if you aren't sure. :)
I think i am a rounded/kibbe romantic! I always wanted to look long and lean and slim and now i am starting to embrace my roundedness and shortness 😄 it's a journy but informing myself definitely helps appreciating my own (and every other) bodyshape more!
Oh and i've seen that video (of course 😄)
I love where this channel is going! So, are you narrowing it down to 5 types? Instead of theatrical romantic and romantic, is it just rounded and rounded, but with some sharpness?
I am a Theoretical Romantic (by the process of elimination). I think that I am a blended bone structure. Does that sound about correct? It's quite difficult to guess at the bone structure when you can't see the bones. Perhaps by xray.
Love this approach!
You explain it so well! Really helpful.
This is such an excellent channel ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Suggestion: layering for the body types 🍁
You know those screen pens that football commentators use to draw on screen to show the passage of play.....Could you draw on the celebrity example photos that you use to illustrate what you mean visually? No I don’t mean draw fake moustaches! I mean for example when you say “sloping neck to shoulders”, show us what exactly that means. I need to see it to get it.
That's such a great idea, I'll put it on my list to get a hold of one of those pens/figure out how to draw on the screen
I feel like this approach would make it really easy for men to use as well :)
oh wow did not expect to see trace lysette in this!! great job!!
Just subscribed after watching a few of your videos. I find it all very intriguing!
oh no! can’t decide if i’m mixed or blended 😱
Roundish face
Maybe I am blended?
Hi Merriam, If you remember, you got the impression that my body shape was a TR, I was ok with that until I received some disapproval from the long followers of this approach. Well this push me to consider SN as a safe zone to be. Now with your interpretation, Where I will fall if I have soft flesh over a mixture of Beveled and Rounded bones? Should I consider the Mixed body type? Thanks
Why don't you email me, did you submit your photos for the photo call a while ago?
Merriam Style, yes I did. I am in your R/TR instructional video.
Do you have a video on mixed and blended type
ive really wondered for a while how body typing applies to trans people like would you be the same after transitioning?
A24-45 Awsome answer thank you!!
I know you asked this forever ago, but as what seems like a soft/short ftm thank you for asking this, I was hyperventilating. there isn't much on body typing for men.
@@kodyghost i know what you mean, after all this time just applying the lines that go with your body type as male or female gives the same amount of harmony, like as a TR male if you look at my youtube and see how I look though you could probably put my hair or anything I wear on a TR female its just as harmonious on me
Can you do the same analysis for men?
I know this is not about Kibbe but I feel like I can see all types in it, apart from Natural and Soft Natural. As a SN myself I don't see how I'd fit in any of these options.
Is it possible that a former DC is a Mixed now?
It should be noted that I am lost again.

(there are also more specific videos about dresses, coats, pants, sweaters, jewellery...)
I can also recommend the channel "Elyssa", she has some good advice, too.
Very clearly presented! Thank you!
I still can’t work it out 😂 I’m average height, but have a slightly longer vertical line. I have long legs, because I’m short-waisted, but I don’t have any bluntness or width in my face. I don’t have sharp features either 🤷🏻♀️
It’s so frustrating that I don’t seem to be able to be objective. Mixed is the only body type I haven’t considered, at this point.
Have a look at my site : www.stylebynature.fi Maybe you can figure out your style type there!
Help
I have a beveled bone structure for sure
Is Elisabeth Moss mixed? I thought she was beveled. Now I don't know in which one I fit in.
I wish there were names for different mixed "types".
I am 19 years old .*will my bone structure change as I get older?*
I am going to become taller? will my hands and feet become larger? 🤔
i dont get it isnt this just the same as kibbes system but with different names
This was great, thank you!
I took your test for bone structure and I got "rounded" I lean more towards a natural body type..would I still be considered a natural even with a rounded bone structure?
im either blended or mixed.
So if the Kibbe test says you’re a dramatic classic which one is that on her description. I’m so confused!
A sharply blended type, i guess.
Cíntia Andradde thank you so much. 💕
