      That' s why foundations in MAC seem to work all the other way compared to the rest of the world😅. A C (for Cool) is an olive since it has green. A W (for Warm) is a pink or orange since they have red. Once they explain the 🟩-🟥, it makes total sense😉.

    Olive being caused by a yellow overtone makes a lot of sense to me. Especially because I change so much when I tan, in the winter my skin is more radiant but summer comes and the yellow overtone enhances +++ and I look super tired and sallow, it’s as if there are two tones in my skin fighting with each other

    • @Lucysmom26
      @Lucysmom26 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

      That's fascinating because it's the exact opposite for me. With zero tan I look sallow and tired, every time I have even a light tan everyone is complimenting me, telling me how healthy I look etc. (and they never perceive that it's the tan, they just think I've got a new flattering hairstyle or sth).

    My yellow skin has fooled me for a while that I’m warm. I’ve had a colour analysis and I’m winter. There are times when I’ve gone pink and white, and I do look really well then. Mostly I look yellow, which does make me look at bit sickly. I look good in purples and royal blue. So, yes. What you’ve said on here makes sense to me and I think I’m a cool and radiant very pale olive.
    When I was little my Mum had a lipstick. It used to make her look swarthy - darker and more yellow. I checked it out recently, made sure the colour hadn’t been changed, and it was very coral! So I know where I got my colouring from now. I’m the same with that type of colour.

    I was so lucky that 35 years ago, I had a hairdresser who recognized that I was cool olive - long long before anyone else was talking about anything like that at all. I didn’t really understand the “olive” part for a long time, but it saved me a lot of time and probably money because at least I understood that I was cool……makeup consultants at stores continued to try to sell me warm toned products for years until I just stopped listening to their opinion. I’d appreciate hearing more from you about, though, because so many people still seem to assume “olive” means “warm”.

    Your explanations of skin tone and color are by far the most logical and accurate I’ve found. One thing I’ve wondered about is how to understand a “cooler” orange and a “warmer” purple, especially of they still come across as fairly saturated. Who can wear them and why. If they look equally good on someone, what would it suggest?

    • @Jennifer_Ann
      @Jennifer_Ann 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      In terms of color theory, you cannot make orange that much more cooler, it is a purely warm color. To make colors cooler you add blue to them, that makes orange into brown. Warmer purple you add some red to it. Purples are fairly easy for a lot of neutral people to wear since they fall between warm and cool colors- but purple itself is always a cool color

    • @sparkleyard
      @sparkleyard 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Jennifer_Ann yeah I get that skin tones aren’t all just congregated in the center of the color wheel, that we’re all essentially shades and intensities of brown.. but if we look strictly at paint color theory, blue is strictly cool and yellow is strictly farm. I feel like red and green are neutral. If that’s true then orange (yellow +red) is the same degree of warm as purple (blue +red) is cool. And adding more red to either would bring them each closer to a neutralized tone. Does that make sense?
      I can’t tell if I’m literally fulfilling her “blind leading the blind” comment 😅

    Im pretty sure I'm a warm olive. I can wear cool colors too, but nothing very cool such as true blues, blueish purples/pinks. I can't wear super warm colors either, so I must be "warm and delicate". Some of my best colors are: (always soft and deep)persimmon, mustard, burgandy/maroon, teal and neutral olive green etc. But, I look like death warmed over in bright/pure oranges and yellows/yellow-greens. But, never just assume that your cool or warm because your olive. I wore the wrong cool colors for years before I watched Merriam's olive skin videos. I am so very grateful that finally us olives have a color artist that thinks out of the box!! Thank you Merriam !❤

    This is me... I know that there are cool olives that exist, but in my case it was very confusing because I look yellow on the surface... Like my skin tone has yellow in it but underneath that is a lot of blue and pink undertones. So overall I look green because green is a mix of blue and yellow and therefore Olive. However, because of the yellow on the top, many people just assumed I was a warm olive. However, the colors that flatter me are muted cool blue, green, burgundy etc... I only realized this much later in life... When I wear warm colors It looks doesn't look bad but it looks as if it is sitting on top of me, it's not in harmony with me.
    In short, I think I am neutral to cool, although not very very cool

I am sure many dark-skinned people have the same struggles, if not worse, on finding information that can be easily applied to them.
    I have been trying to find out the reason behind colours that the usual charts recommend for me are different than my real life experience on what looks good on me (both based on compliments and my own feeling). You're always right, Merriam!! I think you really hit the nail on the head when you describe her as giving a LEMON yellow cast. It's true that yellow is a "warm" color, but as a painter we always describe a "lemon yellow" as a cooler yellow--ie it leans more toward green than to orange. That warm red lip isn't terrible on her because ultimately it's not so much a color clash but rather that emphasizing lemon yellow is not super flattering when it comes to skin! The cooler reds, as you mentioned, help her look more pink and alive. Love your videos!!

    Love this! This video helped me make sense of why I looked so lemony yellow when I wear warm colours. I was fooled into thinking I was really warm toned but was confused because I look best in vibrant cool colours like fuchsia, royal blue and burgundy (and when i wear those, i don't look remotely yellow). Olive skin is just to baffling and it took me ages to realize i was even olive at all until a friend who was a pure warm tone put her arm up against mine and said "girl! you are GREEN that's why" when i complained about not finding decent foundation matches.
    One of the banes of my existence is looking like a corpse when I wear nude lip colours that don't have enough red in them (I'm looking at you peachy nudes!) and mauves looking waaaay too bright pink

And shape shifting- I don’t look good when I tan as I am soo yellow/ sallow. I didnt like gold a few years back but now I like gold that’s not too yellow, and I like neutral leaning slightly warm make up tones (pink/rosy/tan) vs super cool make up that looks too much and garish. I think this is because of too much contrast on my overtones not looking good.

    I was well into my 30s before realizing I was olive. To this day, it's confusing (not the olive part, I'm definitely olive, but what type of olive specifically). I'm very fair, and have spent my life being typed as 'cool/pink' by SAs and then looking like total hell in whatever they've specifically recommended, lol. I'd say my natural skin looks - and this is a word people shy away from because it has a negative connotation which, sure, true, but in my case it's just true - sallow. The most flattering colours on me are a very dark and saturated navy/ink blue and true neutral saturated red. Both blue-reds AND orange-reds look awful. I also look good in saturated peacock. Most colours look like hell on me. Most blushes and lipcolours also look like hell. Purple blush can be extremely flattering and natural looking, or terrible and clown-like. I also don't fit neatly into any of the colour seasons, although I think I'm some kind of winter, possibly dark winter. Yikes. About to go check out your other videos now...thank you for the good info on this, it's surprising it's still so little-known!

Sometimes my skintone has a murky, browny (and definitely greenish) tinge to it and I think that I'm a pale cool olive delicate. But I don't gravitate to those more muted colors and I can't do a nude makeup look. It just makes me look blah. But yet sometimes I thing I'm pale cool olive radiant because the colors that seem to make my face light up are the jewel tones and in makeup, I need those fuschia, magenta blushes to make me look alive. But again...I have that murky, brownish tinge underneath my skin, so am I olive delicate??? It's just so confusing. More videos on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

      Same here. It's too confusing. All I know is that I look best in saturated colors, especially tomato red, forest green, royal blue, navy blue, or bright coral. So contradictory. My best lipstick is L'Oreal British Red. I thought I was cool olive, but nope, I am too pale to be cool olive. Who knows? I give up. Just going to stick with my red lipstick and bright colors because they take years off me.
      Pastels look hideous on me, so sad because they fit my personality better.

    As an *olive OIL* (olives come in lime green, eggplant or even glazed black😅, we are like the top quality oil) skinned person, being able to shapeshift is a total win, personally. Having military green eyes and chestnut brown hair, I can make the yellow dots pop, leave my hair dry so the oranginess shines and become warm and lovely or make my iris lean to grey, wet and slick my hair until it' s almost black and be a cold bish. Let' s be honest, I' m a MUA, I assume it helps a bit🫣...

    I always felt I was a cool tone for almost a decade before I finally allowed other women and female relatives try to help me pick makeup at stores. They all told me I was warm. My sister only buys me stuff an autumn would wear because she's an autumn, and she likes her colors on me. Honestly, it never felt quite right.
    I recently tried Ulta's makeup apps to find my foundation shades and other makeup. I tried two different window locations during the morning, and it became obvious that the app thought I was neutral even after 2 hours. I'm a real neutral. A neutral medium olive with peach undertones. Neither cool or warm (or rather, I'm both at once).
    Now I'm annoyed and feel gaslighted by people who tried to help me but wouldn't listen to me. The problem is probably the fact that I'm neither cool or warm, but in-between, so it's probably confusing. I'm still stuck between dark winter and dark autumn. What if I'm wrong about both? I imagine I can play with more variety since I am neutral? I think it's easier to just be cool or warm. I'm not sure.

      Having watched Merriam's videos for many years: olive is neither, is just another factor, undertones are either warm(yellow) or cool (blue), and both can be either pink/red or olive/green. In photo editing the magenta/green spectrum is named tint, while blue/yellow is temperature, we'll something similar happens with skincolor.

    1. Contrary to the conventional belief, Very yellow-based foundations like mac looks too yellow compared to your actual skin
    2. Orange-based foundations and orange brick bronzers look off on you. The color of our tan isn’t orange

That olive skintone was specifically in the middle of the fair-deep spectrum, that it was literally impossible for a fair-skinned or a deeper skin-toned person to be olive. Not true, and as soon as I figured that out so much immediately made sense 9especially my struggle to find a foundation that worked and wasn't either too pink or too orange).

      @ayalashoshani986 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      She has a great video that explains how to tell the difference, I can't remember what it's called, but this is the method she presented there: 1. Examine how your face looks next to a pure orange color, then examine how your face looks next to a pure blue color. If your face looks better with orange - your are probably warm olive. If you look better with blue, your are probably cold olive. If both colors look fine on you, even good, and neither one looks definitely better than the other, then move on to the next step. (Miriam emphasized that there is no point in continuing to the second step if you received an answer in step 1). 2. drape a cool baby pink fabric next to your face, then try warm peachy pink fabric. Which of them looks better on you and your skin will be in harmony with it? If the baby pink - you are a "cold and delicate olive" and if the peach - you are a warm and delicate olive. This method is the only one that helped me finally realize that I am a warm and delicate olive, because the baby pink is so opposite to my skin tone, it really highlights all the yellow in my skin. On the other hand, the peach doesn't do that for me, hence it suits and flatters me better.

    Love your videos! It is a little confusing. Are we moving away from theoretical color theory and into practical skin color analysis? Green is described by you as having inherent warmth because it contains yellow, unlike pure red which can be truly neutral (contains no yellow). So are you saying cool olive is still on the warm side, but almost contains a teal green (blue green) undertone, making it harmonious with cool red lipstick, silver jewelry etc ? Perhaps I answered my own question…

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I have always described green as being neutral if half of its value comes from blue, and half of its value comes from green. Have you watched my video called 'olive, we need to talk', there I describe this.
      Cool olives DO have more yellow than cool rosy tones, *however* they also have more blue than cool rosy tones. this is because they have more *green* (blue+yellow) than rosy tones do. cool olives are just as cool as cool rosy tones. truly cool with all the bells and whistles and certified cool.
      All skin tones have *some* yellow, otherwise we would be literally purple (the complement of yellow). that doesn't mean that all skin tones are warm. sure, I guess they have 'some warmth' if you want to see it that way, that's alright. but the point still stands, the cool skin tones simply have more blue than yellow.
