@@eeaa4067 they had 3 chassis, for two drivers. While other teams usually had 6-8 chassis. One was wrecked so they use the backup chassis and Button ended up using one chassis for the whole season. That's why their performance declined in the late stage, because the chassis has wear down so much due to usage for the whole season.

As part of the cost saving measure to retain him as their driver, Ross Brawn wrote in a clause in Button's contract that should he win the drivers championship, he gets to keep one of the frame. He would dearly love to keep gp001-002 (the one he win the championship in), but that one is claimed by Mercedes.

That was the craziest F1 season I’ve seen in my lifetime and I’ve been watching since 1988. McLaren’s awful start, Renault caught race fixing for the season before, double diffuser controversy, Felipe Massa fracturing his skull with a flying spring, Mark Webber winning his first race after so many years trying, but the Brawn GP story was the stuff made of dreams. A fairytale, should not, could not happen, but against all the odds they did it under the most strenuous of circumstances. I don’t think any genuine F1 fan could feel anything but genuine delight that Jenson Button became world champion and Ross Brawn won the drivers and constructors championships in his own car, not somebody else’s.A great season with drama and excitement which is slightly missing these days in F1

Jenson Button was my favorite driver for some time before Brawn GP ever existed. My reason for liking a British driver who did not win a Grand Prix until 2006? It's actually very simple, his style of driving, being light on the car, not flicking it around and wringing its neck, like some drivers do, was the way I was taught to drive a racing car way back at Jim Russell Racing Driver School, in the mid-1970s. Smooth was our goal. Take as little from the car as you can, preserve it, and the tires, as much as possible. In a few words, "drive like Jim Clark", was our true goal, though of course, no one can drive like Jim Clark drove. In a little Formula Ford, with a 1.6-liter engine, you have nearly no power and therefore, you need to learn to conserve speed and carry it through corners as much as you can. That is the way Jenson Button raced, I did have a very good understanding of driving that way and I appreciated his style. He was, well, gentle with a car, especially compared to so many of his opponents.
Another thing I appreciated about JB was his manners. JB was, and is, well mannered, but with a great sense of humour. One need only read one of his books and discover that sense of humour quickly. In particular, read "How To Be An F1 Driver" and you'll get a laugh for certain. His "tongue and cheeky" style of writing suits me to a T. My wife likes it so much that she's asked me to read it to her. We've been having a lot of trouble finding the right book for me to read to her, but thanks to JB, we've got it covered now. Oh and yes, she can read herself, she just likes hearing my voice, LOL! Also, I've read the other two books Jenson has written and they're excellent too and I heartily recommend them to any and all F1 fans and even those who aren't F1 fans but would like to read about a person who has set their goals high and worked hard to achieve them. Considering the number of people who dream of getting into F1 as drivers, there are damned few who actually achieve that lofty goal. Just getting a seat in an F1 car is hard enough, but to become the F1 World Champion is other worldly.
This was a very nice video to watch, seeing JB in that car and then watching the emotions pour out of him and Ross Brawn together. They made quite the team and it was quite nice to see them together for this little jaunt around Silverstone.
Many thanks to Sky Sports F1 for putting this up on youtube for us all to enjoy! Cheers!

Totally agree! You'll be interested to hear I also went through the Jim Russell racing school in 1975 at Mallory Park so were you there? It also taught me how to drive smoothly, keep momentum up and not scrub off speed with jerky inputs to the steering or brakes. I still enjoy the occasional track day today and love showing supposedly faster cars the way round!

@Chris Blackshaw How has TH-cam not notified me of your comment a year ago? I am frightfully sorry, Chris! No, I was not at the Jim Russell school. I went to Jim Russell at what was known then as Sears Point.
What a coincidence, though. I think you will agree with me that Jim Russell Racing Drivers School provided excellent training for anyone looking to go racing. Unfortunately, in my case, the Racing I did amounted to a partial season Racing Formula Fords and a partial season Racing sports cars. A few years after this, I was fairly well off due to Internet stocks with the company I worked for, so I found a Formula Ford Racing league, but just as I found a great car, the Internet stock bubble burst. Dammit! The good news is that I had not bought the car yet, so I was saved by checking my email just moments away from signing on the dotted line.
So, Chris, do you race today?

Can still happen, just less likely. Potentially with the new regulations in '21. They found a way to make the car faster than the competition and that can still be done by any team in theory. Brawn GP lives on through Mercedes, they wouldn't be as dominate if it wasn't for that purchase

    • @canicetang8837
      @canicetang8837 5 ปีที่แล้ว +184

That 2009 season was very interesting. Brawn GP almost didn't even made it to the grid because they had to secure an engine after Honda pulled out. For sure, had Honda stayed, the car wouldn't be right. Mercedes engine gave them the edge despite the last minute change to the rear package of the car. Also they ditched the KERS system which might not be all that advantageous with the extra weight. It was a good call.
Or course, the double diffuser was their key to their success. Brawn got it right but somehow Williams and Toyota did not with a similar concept. Budget was a concern and the team had to layoff more than a third of their staff, plus Ross with limited funds meant not a lot of upgrades. Hence there were only 3 cars being made. 1 car for the entire year for Jenson, 1 for Rubens and 1 spare.
Meanwhile, the other teams caught up in the mid-season and beyond. But the early dominance by Brawn meant that Jenson just held on from Seb's late charge to win in Brazil.
Mercedes bought Brawn outright rather than trying to do the same with Mclaren. However, they know that Ron Dennis will veto anyhow. They thought by bringing in Michael on for the second comeback and Nico with the all German team. This would be a cakewalk. Not so. They didn't put enough into developing this winning car and the new Silver Arrows were actually struggling so much that Daimler's own shareholders were talking about selling the team in 2012.
It wasn't until Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda bought into the team. Totally restructure the management and getting the right people on board in 2013. Including Aldo Costa on the engine side from Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton in the transition phase, along with other important personnel to tackle the brand new Hybrid Era F1 Formula of 2014 early. Only then the dominance started.
Same as Ferrari, this actually took 4 long years to succeed.

@@canicetang8837 Thank you for the rundown. For me, the allure of Brawn GP is the fairytale behind it, a script worthy of a movie. It was all about the will and faith of a few people and the resilience of what's left of Honda. Brawn's success was more than just its double diffuser. It was as much about its innovation in front wing design as the entire package.
More often than not, we hear more about the failures than the successes. That's what sport is. The success tastes so much sweeter when the struggle to get there was harder. That's what Brawn GP is to many- An allegory to never give up.

When he left the pits after the penalty stop, he went into the Senna curve and lit up the rears. You could feel his anger and frustration in that moment. He then proceeded to drive through the field, AGAIN. And won the race on the last lap. This is one of my favorite F1 cars, if not my absolute favorite chassis of all time. It just has a special (for lack of a better word) glimmer to it...the design, the color scheme, and the fact that it was a rare Cinderella story in F1.
