Jamal, I COMPLETELY AGREE with you. I've made these same arguments and more. One thing you did not mention is that we took Stephen to World's 2022 in this very same scenario and faltered. Stephen fell and got a 12.9 something in TF and also failed to get a World's medal in EF.
Another thing - just because Khoi fell on PH in TF, a 13.8 was a great score to get with a fall. Plus, Fred had one of his elements not get credited due to a pause and muscle up at the beginning of his PH routine. So that also is what brought down our PH score at World's. We made that up and more in the VT rotation with Khoi, Asher's big scores, Yul's huge PBar routine and solid scores from Fred on each of the other events.
The value of adding one score on PH is not enough to justify leaving off Shane, Khoi or Yul. I love Paul so I'm glad he is going after being shafted on his spot last time. But Khoi should be there as a World Medalist and one of Shane/Yul needed to be there.

Blame the FIG, Both teams should go back to 6, I will say at worlds stephen rocked quals. Stephen knew he made the team, there was math and thats why he did downgraded routines, he can do a 6.5-7.1, he absolutely can win gold, not likely but Max Whitlock looks cashed li chi kai did not make it, i predict ryhs will win. A computer chose the team, they decided it would always. Stephen still trains alot even though hes one event. He trains as much as the guys train aa because its so hard. interesting point though, im crushed for shane but brett the coaches and athlete alkl knew the math. highest scoring team was always being picked. I love specialists

I know the USA MAG chooses this program, and the program chooses the team, but there is clearly a huge bug in the program. Next time they should require specialists to add at least 1 - 1.5 more than the non-specialist scenario. Like why are there strict requirements for all-arounders to be top 3 on 3 events, but there is no requirement for specialists to lock a spot? Japan would never replace all-arounders by one-event specialists.
There are way more specialists than all arounders in MAG, but all arounders are backbone of the team. China often loses to Japan because they historically trash all arounders (ZBH was voted off by the team in 2021, and karma struck at Tokyo Olympics). Now, ZBH (88+ AA) has not recovered his leg events, and the prospect of them isn't good at all.
Stephen needs to bring a 14.6 - 15 that locks his spot in team final, not a 12-ish he brought in 2022.

@@cocoroni1031 I agree with this wholeheartedly. Or if they are an event specialist, they should be able to put up scores on at least two other events as an insurance policy in case someone were to be injured. We saw this in 2012 on the women’s side with McKayla Maroney and earlier with Alicia Sacramone. Alicia was a vault and floor person, but she could also be used on beam. McKayla was a vault specialist and only vaulted in London, but she could put up respectable scores on both floor and beam. The point is these specialists could contribute elsewhere if something happened (it did in Beijing) and Stephen isn’t able to.

Thank you for saying the same thing I’ve been trying to tell everyone else!!! Steven wasn’t a great choice. At least when Marta took McKayla Maroney, she was a vault specialist but she could be plugged in on beam and floor. What are they going to do if the same carnage that happened on the women’s side to the men? Steven can’t go up anywhere else.

My team was Fred, Brody, Shane, Khoi, Asher. I think that you could make a good case for Paul if he gets the YDP back and based on his PH and HB scores. He also can be really strong on FX and SR, though the same thing is true for Shane, who was more consistent. I also think that even though Yul didn’t do great, you could’ve really made a strong case for his FX and PB potential. I’ve noticed that the US really left a lot at home in terms of PB by overlooking Curran, Yul, Khoi, and Shane. I do think that a Brody-Asher-Fred PB rotation will be great, but I don’t like that Paul is the only backup there. I also love the potential of a Paul-Fred-Brody HB rotation, but I’m really worried that Asher is the only backup there. Like you said, this is a real boom-or-bust team.

Same! I'm more confident for a team medal with this team, than the actual team computed by a flawed program (and TBH, no one can guarantee a hit for PH). Japan doesn't want team members do 5 - 6 events if possible. It's not possible for all team members to do 4- events with the actual team.

I know that the team was the picked because they were the highest scoring team over four competions however, Stephen hasn't been consistent at all. He has not hit at all in team finals for international assignments. I think that if it had gone to committee selection, the team might've been different ie. Khoi over Stephen. I like Khoi, but unfortunately he had a really bad meet and he isn't at his best right now due to his patella injury. I would have picked Shane over Paul. Shane had a great meet and was the highest scoring all-arounder for night two of the Olympic Trials. I like Stephen and would love to see him bring home a medal on Pommel Horse. If the goal were to have someone bring home gold on an individual event, Curran Phillips on Parallel Bars would have been the way to go for that though. I would like to see the team number increase to six again. I hope team USA does great in Paris.

Trials wasn't the only consideration though. Champs and trials were both used in the calculation. And Asher had a bad Champs and just an okay Day 1 of trials. So I don't see how 1 bad meet keeps Khoi off but it doesn't for Asher when both were supposed to be weighed equally.

I really don’t understand putting Steven on this team without Shane at all. I think with a 5 person team needing to put up 3 scores on 6 events is already a tough thing, so if you’re going to bring a true specialist like Steven who can only do one event, then in my mind you need to bring the top 3 all around scores from trials, no exceptions. Because if you can’t put 1 of your 5 gymnasts up on 5 events, then you need to have 3 gymnasts you could confidently put up on all 6 events, that would be the top 3 from trials (Frederick, Brody, and Shane). How Steven made this team at the same time they decided to leave Shane off is beyond me. Personally my team would’ve been Frederick, Brody, Shane, Asher, and Khoi, but what do I know. Honestly tho I’m rooting for Steven because let me tell u if he falls on horse during team finals then all we do is pray for him because the Twitter hate train is going to be brutal.
