    There's nothing more beneficial for the mind, body and spirit than being in nature. It looks lovely your neck of the woods, and cooking and eating the wild edibles you foraged under the shelter of trees is time well spent. This is my third year of foraging, and my son and daughter enjoy it. We are steadily building up our knowledge.

    I knew the information in this video would be good when you showed the movable ring on the Parasol mushroom. This has fascinated me since my childhood days. Also the brown "scales" on top of the cap come right off in older mushrooms, they are also not properly attached. WTF, who put that half assed falling apart mushroom in the woods? They do make a lovely companion for grilled chicken breast and pasta though. Also surprisingly tasty as a dried mushroom in sauces. And here in Germany we love to harvest the whole cap and fry it like a Wiener Schnitzel in a coat of breadcrumbs.

    Thank you so much for sharing this important knowledge with us. There is nothing like going out in nature and being able to bring home some food to cook. I have learnt a lot. Although I have to say I am a little nervous when it comes to mushrooms and haven't ventured there yet, but hope to soon. Still at the looking stage and seeing if I can identify any.

    • @UKWILDCRAFTS
      @UKWILDCRAFTS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes it took me a few years of learning before I started picking mushrooms to eat. It’s best to start with a few easier to identify ones like hedgehog fungus. But you’re doing it the right way. Learn first, eat later 😁

    • @georgequinn721
      @georgequinn721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I regularly take my 3 and 10 year old foraging. Even the little one can now identify at least 3 edible mushrooms(and how to know whether to discard them). I can easily identify 30+ edible species in the UK at a glance and know how to disregard the look-a-likes. Be not afraid! It's all about educating yourself over time. There is no way you could get me to eat a mushroom at 3 years old but because I'm including my 3 year old in my foraging journey, he and his older sister can't get enough of them! Free mushrooms on toast for the win!

    • @takesallkinds22
      @takesallkinds22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@georgequinn721 That's great, a wonderful gift & education you're giving your children, to be able to learn and identify what is basically around us, they won't go hungry and just being in nature is so beneficial.

    I have found that practically every beech nut I have collected didn't contain any nut in the shell. Then I read this,
    "When you forage beechnuts in the woods, much of your harvest will actually be empty shells. Part of this is due to the beechnut diseases that cause the trees to produce blanks, and a part of it is due to insect pests.
    Often, you can tell if a beechnut shell is a “blank” before you even open it. The shell itself will be a bit concave or collapsed in on itself because there’s no nut inside."

    Ok , Some time ago, i bought a book about foraging for mushrooms in the UK ! It had full page fotos, of , on the one side ....Edible UK Mushrooms , yet the opposite color photo , showed an identical mushroom that was poisonous ! Scratch test was not mentioned ! The book explained, that if you do not know, what you are doing ! Then find a draught free area, in your house , then place each individual mushroom, on a sheet of white paper !
    if the spores dropped by the mushroom, were. black ! it was. poisonous , if the spores were white , it was good to eat ! Yet on the initial part , of your video, about that particular mushroom ? You do not mention , any similar looking. but. poisonous ones ? Are you saying that. that. one particular mushroom, has no. poisonous look alikes. ??????

    Cutting a bolete mushroom or bolete-like and it turning blue doesn't mean necessarily that it is poisonous. There are nearly no toxic boletes.

      True, but I said ‘if it turns blue it’s possible you have a poisonous bolete’. Not that it ‘is’ poisonous :)

    If foraging in September doesn’t include getting utterly f****d on Liberty Caps, you’re doing it wrong.

    Your videos are brillaint brother only thing i would ask is when you compare the mushrooms to others maybe you could show a quick picture of what they look like that would be super helpful thanks again and keep foraging 👍👍👍
