      My folks had a Coleman pop up when I was a kid. No AC. No fridge. No toilet or shower. It sucked trying to sleep at night with no AC and only a small oscillating fan to move the humid, heavy summer air.
      That said, when I was looking at getting into trailer/RV camping last year, I was looking at pop ups with AC. That's when I found they now have fridges, toilets, and showers.
      Personally, I have no issues using the campground facilities. However, the wife quickly vetoed that.
      Also, I'm not real keen on the idea of doing your business three feet from where you cook your food and wash your dishes.

    I really really like that first one. It looks like it has hard walls instead of tent material like most popups.. but I actually really enjoy using the pop up campers because like you said, it’s like sleeping in a tent but your up off the ground and have a few more amenities!! But that first one for $11,000 is absolutely perfect for me!

    I like the hard shells. I know that they add a little to the price tag but that added protection from wildlife (bears, in particular) is worth it if you want to spend much time in the mountains.

    I really like the slide-out model popups. After being stuck inside a small popup (no slide) during a weekend storm with my wife, two kids and their grandmother, interior room does matter! The rain was blowing sideways, so sitting outside under the awning was not an option on that trip... We had to dash to the bath house to use the toilet. A shower/bath is definitely on my list also! We ended up getting a refund for the remaining two nights and renting a cabin onsite. It took awhile to convince my wife to go camping again (I took her tent camping on our first trip after I met her). The popup was a compromise. If your spouse doesn't like roughing it, get a popup with all the bells and whistles (just trust me on this one). Some are now prewired for Solar!

    I found my perfect pop up. A 2010 Coleman Evolution E4. It has a walled shower/toilet combo. Dinette slide, bigger than normal fridge for a popup and a deck on the front to put our golf cart or motorcycles on. In a little less than two years our retirement adventure starts.

    Very good reviews of the pop ups. We currently own a "A-Liner" 2015 and had many trips. For 2 people it has everything we need: heat, ac, toilet, microwave, stove, sink (in smaller versions). We are now looking to trade up. Very good advise to rent first before you buy. See if you like RV-ing first and what type of camping RV-ing you want to do.

    This really surprised me because I never knew pop ups have bathrooms. When I was a kid we had a pop up camper and it didn't have a bathroom. We had a portable toilet. Our pop up camper was a 1995 Coleman Rio Grande. After that we bought a 2001 Sportsmen camper. Now I have a brand new travel trailer. I bought a 2022 Jayco Jay Flight 224BH after we sold the Sportsmen camper to a guy who has custody to his kids. Thanks for sharing that information

    I love pop-up "tents" not a hard-side - the best floorplan of a pop-up is one that has a u-shaped galley at both ends with drop down tables - so you get two separate seating / eating areas (not sure anyone makes this floorplan anymore) - the toilet shower is in the middle with the sink stove and fridge - make sure to get A/C

Thanks, I think we are going to look for used because a lot of people buy a pop up then want something bigger. They go fairly cheap. If it doesn’t have a bathroom, my dad can put one in. IN 1986 we bought a colman pop up camper made by fleetwood called the plantation model It had a solid wall shower/tub and toliet area and there was even a window in it. Oh how I loved that trailer !! 3 burner stove and oven, refrigerator hot and cold water plus a furness. 26 ft opened gross vehicle weight 2750 pounds gross hitch weight 250 and ofcourse electric brakes. That was pop up luxury !!!!

      I liked the A-FRAME. What is a cassette toilet?

  • @WillN2Go1
    @WillN2Go1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. I'm on and off interested in RVs. The trucks and vans are all too high profile hauling around empty space that has absolutely no use until you're parked. And most of the units I see featured at shows are fancy, heavy, expensive and not very smart. I think the industry is stuck (and they just copy each other.) Pop up campers on the other hand were smart back in the 1960s when my neighbors had one and are still smart. The addition of cassette toilets is a huge plus. The prices seem amazingly cheap compared to all other RV campers. Maybe I can haul one when I get a Cybertruck in a couple of years, not sure my Model Y LR can do it. (I barely made it across the Navaho nation between chargers. I live in California were places are a lot farther apart than say back east. This might make a good video topic if you haven't done it already. Let me know and I'll rent a pop up and see how far I can get in California, send you the video.)
    These units have only three (possible) issues. 1. They're trailers, trailers have a level of complexity (but you don't have to haul around your 'home' after you're set up. 2. You can't use the bathrooms unless you pop it up (a nice convenience but not a deal breaker) and 3. The soft sides need a bit of extra care. (The Sunbrella bimini on my sailboat is 20 years old, but probably needed replacing ten years ago. It's over the cockpit, not my bed.) Alleged negatives: But the bears will break in! They won't bother*, and in some of these you get those huge zipper windows. (A few years ago I realized that I wasn't camping in Ireland, I was in a tunnel that happened to be in Ireland. Now all lightweight backpacking tents have two big mesh sides.) The trend of stealth camping and privacy is in my experience absurd. I've camped in the backs of cars, everywhere, for years with no problems. No one cares, no one looks, and even I'm surprised that in decades, no rangers or cops or anyone have ever tapped on the window.
    What I'd want with the shower curtains is a way to take the whole thing down to hang it outside to dry (or to shower outside). slot on one side, pivot catch on the other, carry it out... (I've got snap buttons all over my boat - nothing but an aggravation.)
    *Tip for the critters that gnaw on stuff. Spritz your exposed wires, hoses and tires with ammonia (Windex). This dries but as soon as any critter licks it, it's like licking a bar of soap. Raccoons were chewing up my friend's garden hose. I fixed it, then spritzed it and they've not touched it since -- and the ammonia has to have washed over over the years.

    That was a really great video I loved and enjoyed seeing all the different models that you showed I just recently got a used pop-up camper it is a 1995 Thor Skamper and it has the bathroom in it and shower like the one popup you showed and I'm very much looking forward to taking it camping next summer it might even go with me on a winter vacation out west this year
    I guess I have gone a little green as in more Back To Nature for camping because originally I started out with a popup work my way up from small travel trailers to a class C motorhome and now I'm back to the popup again :-)
    But like you said you can't beat the feeling of it's like you're outdoors in a tent but you're not and you're up off the ground and you can enjoy the scenery and the sound of the nature but you still have your RV conveniences

      Hi Enano,
      My best advice is to rent an RV or popup BEFORE you buy one! Then you will see what you like and don't like about it so when you are ready to buy you will know what to look for.
      Also - don't buy new right now. RV sales are through the roof right now and prices are high.
      In the show notes I have a link you can use to rent an RV from Outdoorsy and you can save $50!
      Hope that helps you out!

    I'm interested in the Rockwood A214HW or the A194HW which also has a wet bath. The Aliner is great but the cost is daunting... I still don't understand why campers have microwaves. I really want someone to explain why it's a "great" feature. It's not like you have to heat something up real quick and you're supposed to be more in tune with nature. I barely use the one I have at home to consider lugging one around. Personally I would rather have an oven like the A194HW than a microwave.

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kharizmah,
      We use our microwave for heating up leftovers, frozen veggies, potatoes and sometimes defrosting meat or chicken. But not everyone uses the microwave. Luckily most microwaves are built in so they don't take up much space. Ironically - we rarely use the oven in our RV. So everyone is different in how they do things - that's what makes the world go round I guess.
      Thanks for watching and sharing your comment.

      The Aliner despite being twice the cost has the smallest fresh water tank at 11 gallons. All the others are all made by Forest River and have 22-26 gallon fresh water.
      The Aliner and Forest River models with cassette toilets have no black/grey water tanks. Otherwise, I think they're about 11 gallons.

    Mike & Susan thank you so much for videoing the pop up campers. I did have to start considering them for towing reasons. I already liked the A-liner's as they offer the same as a small trailer like tear drops & mini max's, except the bathroom is not enclosed. However the first A-liner that you showed, kind of had a somewhat enclosed b/r. I just don't like the regular tent pop ups actually because of privacy. I love your very informative videos including pricing and everything, a lot of videos that I watch will not give a price and that is discouraging. Thank You for this information. I'm just beginning to research small trailers vs pop-ups and find your videos most helpful. Will definitely take your recommendation of rental first before buying. I wasn't aware that was possible. Makes so much sense, especially since my hubby isn't sure this would be his ideal way of adventure.
    Are you aware of a website that lists types of trailers able to be towed with types of vehicles? I have a 2019 Honda CRV, would like to use it if possible.
    Thanks again for your great videos

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rena,
      There isn't a website that I am aware of that shows every vehicle type and how much it can tow. To find out how much your vehicle can tow you should look in your owners manual and there is probably a chart you need to figure out. For example, if your CRV has a tow package it will be able to tow more...but every vehicle has different engines, transmissions and tow packages so it can be a little difficult to figure it all out.
      If you get really stuck - go to the website and shoot me an email and maybe I can help walk you through it.
      I hope this helps.

      Hi Rena. We bought our pop up from Beckleys RV ( it was in this video. #4. ) We were really lucky to buy from there because the salesman was so informative. I'd find an rv center that has great ratings and great staff. Then come with questions and more questions! A good salesman with plenty of knowledge can let you know what weight your vehicle can tow.
      We haul a Rockwood pop up with a slide out. It's on the heavier side. Our Chevy Traverse handles it well. We did have to install extras like tow bar, tow break,wiring harnass, ect... stuff you wouldn't think of like voltage, plugging in to a electrical source at some campgrounds. Our is 150 not 220. Hoses, cords. I wouldn't have thought about. I really felt overwhelmed but our salesman talked to us and answered every question. I went from doubtful to telling folks that our pop up was the best investment we ever made

      HI Mr. Bullard,
      Great question and popup campers and travel trailers are different animals in my opinion. Some folks like popups better and others like travel trailers better. A great compromise is a hybrid camper. Has all the benefits of both. Check out our video about them!

      For us it was size and amenities. I don't mean glamping. Lol. But bathroom and little bigger kitchen space. We have a Rockwood with a slide out. We also have 7 young grandkids and 2 medium dogs. We can comfortably sleep all of the kids in the pop up and us. The bathroom is needed. A/c is a blessing- no whinning. Lol. And we can tow it with our Chevy Traverse while also fitting the kids.

    Would like to hear about the Rockwood HW 296 and the flagstaff HW 29sc. Both have bathrooms and are also pop up campers. I know they're similar but would like to know the differences between them. I've got a family of five so we'll need one with enough sleeping quarters and my wife likes the idea of having walls around the bathroom. I'm interested in possibly purchasing one but would rent one first. Thank you

    Thanks for posting this..My question is this..I am getting tons of conflicting info regarding towing. My vehichle can pull up to 3500 max range and I am told I can only pull pop up or small bunkhouse such as coleman lantern 16b , wolfpup, jayflight model similiar but then others say no I cannot, I do not want to make wrong choice and experience problems. Also this....if there is no rain to get inside how well does the pop up retain heat or cooling ? and finally if not at a hookup how might I run the features in a pop up such as plugs ac etc with a generator or any solar options??? if I stay within my towing capacity including gear passengers etc will I be ok to tow? some pop ups weigh clpse to same as travel trailers so I am very perplexed on this. if a pop up weighs 2900 & so does a small travel trailer why would I be able to haul one and not other?

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cheryl,
      You should never tow more than 85% of the tow vehicles capacity. As for the other questions, it would all depend on the camper you have. These may be better answered by a sales person that knows the specifics of that particular RV. :)
