    In this video I restored an old german Nail puller, which was built between 1891 and 1945.
    You will see welding, sandblasting, painting, cold bluing, turning steel on the lathe and more in this video!
    If you are willing to support me feel free to leave a comment, subscribe and share my work!
    I hope you will have some fun watching this video! If you have further questions on tools, my work or the chemistry behind the methods I use like cold bluing or removing rust, don’t hesitate to ask!
    Attention! Disclaimer:
    The experiments are only for educational purposes and serve as entertainment.
    I am experienced in handling the used substances and I advise everyone who is not a trained professional not to imitate the experiments I show you. Do not try this at home!
    For experiments which could cause potential danger I will not tell you which chemicals I am using to prevent imitating. Those who know what is happening, know the chemicals anyway and probably are trained professionals. :)
    I am not responsible for personal injury or property damage if the experiments will be imitated.
    I hope you understand.
    Music at the end: Allégro - Emmit Fenn
    Until next time!
    Much love, Dr. Hut :)

    This movie remembers me to my father who passed away 2 years ago, he was 89. When i was a kid (now 65) i used with him the same tool to remove nails from scap wood to reuse the wood. 50 years not seen it but i found it back when making his barn empty. I only cleaned it and it is still working and still use it, now only for fun.

    Are the jaws are supposed to dig in? the handle has a big weight on it at the end. Place it over a fully driven in nail and slam the sliding end in to dig the Jaws into the wood so it can grab the head of the nail. Then lever off the lever attached to the jaws.

    They are not for pulling nails out but fencing staples out and you roll them out using the tang on the second beak of the jaws. In Australia where we have very hard wood especially when it has been holding up a fence for better than twenty years you need something strong to pull the staples out of the post. I have my Great Grandfathers set which are almost the same make made before 1890 and they are almost the same, I was using them last week on an old post which a tree branch had fallen on and it loosened the staple with ease. Hope that helps.

    I realize this is an older video. However I actually have a similar nail puller like that but mine is forged steel built. Once you understand how to use it, it is an invaluable tool to remove nails that are even with, or even sunken into any type wood. I pulled hundreds of nails using such a tool. No other way to get them out without totally destroying the wood...

    I still don't understand how it works. Are you pulling the inner part to pull the nail out of the wood? If so, what's the lever at the head for?

    • @DrHutOfHandcraft
      @DrHutOfHandcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can either do that or you put it on the lever and bend it over to pull the nail out

    • @georgecurtis6463
      @georgecurtis6463 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You put the jaws on either side of the head of the nail. Then pound down using the sliding hammer. When sufficiently in you bend the whole thing sideways one the lever. This forces the jaws to grab the nail and also lift or pull the nail out. If not enough you then use a hammer. I used the japanese version in the 50s as a kid.

    Zodat de punten er net onder komen ,dan hem lang maken zorgen het korte handvat stevig tegen het hout staat dan aan het lange deel trekken tot de bekken
    goed om de spijker zitten ,nu met twee handen het lange deel over het korte handvat heen trekken !!dit creëert een goede hefboom met een verassende kracht .!

  • @Crocophant572
    @Crocophant572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Restoration was fine, but the test was a joke. That's not how you use a nail puller at all. You use it to get out nails that are completely buried in the wood. The jaws are shaped that way so you can get them into the wood and under the head of the nail. You then use the long arm as a lever, with the short arm resting on the wood. Just like a crowbar, but you can use it on nails that you can't get hold of with a crowbar.

      @@DrHutOfHandcraft OK, I guess they're not very common. I don't have one either, and have never used one. Sorry if I came over a bit crass. But they're still made by companies like Bahco and Hultafors, so you can find their versions online. If you do, you will see that the modern ones are much shorter than your old one. That's because the new ones are not meant to be used alone (as yours obviously is), but they have a bolt at the end so you can use a clawhammer to get better leverage.

      @@DrHutOfHandcraft I agree with one shot that you use it like a claw hammer, with the handle extending to give more leverage. The curved foot rests against the work surface and rocking the handle back makes the jaws pinch tighter the harder you pull.

      I wrote it in the subtitles. I cut it of because I wanted to replace the rod at first. But then I decided to keep all parts original.
