Have another one for you while you are at it. Take that same type of heat gun and a plastic scraper and remove your old window tinting if the need arises. That is my LIKE button for you.
Mine add already bubbled up so i took a sharp egdge to cut into the bubbled chrome and started to peel by hand then i took my power washer and sprayed grill to lift up more chrome and start peeling again. Took about an hour and a half.
That chrome veneer is just terrible. It bubbles and splits and looks like someone tried to cover the plastic with aluminum foil. Thanks for showing how you removed it!
was litterally trying this earlier (2015 mustang gt) every other piece is covered in the chrome stuff, i hate it, but turns up i just wasn’t holding the heat gun long enough, thanks :)
A side question that is not related.. If I want to cut a piece of chrome trim molding to shorten the length, will cutting crack the chrome on the surrounding resulting in peeling. Want to cut a piece of chrome plated ABS molding that is not specifically for my car and want to install it on mine.
wish i'd watched this a couple of hours ago. i already own a heat gun, just never occurs to me that i should use it. maybe i scuffed it up enough? already painted it, but it's toyota, so at least they did it right, and it only had two small bubbles in it to start
Thanks man! I have a chrome grill on my Tundra and I hate reapplying Plastidip every few months, and painting over that chrome is impossible! I’m doing this and then painting it with color match paint for sure!
Awesome I tried everything to get the chrome off with no success. I thought about heat but wasnt sure if it would warp the plastic. I'll give it a try.
It definitely can warp the plastic. There's always a sweet spot where you have enough heat to get the chrome to lift without melting the plastic, so take your time and don't apply too much heat in one place, even more so on thinner plastics. Let me know how it works for you
It's a 1200 watt gun my man, and you're only running it for a few minutes. I have 2 1500 watt space heaters plus a 4200 watt unit when temps go below -20c going all winter long and my bills are well under $1000 for two months, so settle on down now
No, chrome paint is just very shiny paint. Factory chromed plastics are actually chromed, typically they'll coat the plastic in copper and nickel to make it conductive and then electroplate the chrome over that. When chrome peels off plastic usually it's because the base layer that the chrome adheres to has failed.
Honestly haven’t been around Fords long enough to realize but my family keeps buying GM and every single piece of chrome on any GM vehicle at any time is bubbling up or rusting.
You could try it with the grille on but I wouldn't recommend it, it's a lot easier to do with it off and there is the chance of damaging your paint and headlights with the heat. It's not hard to remove
U must value ur time at 3 bucks an hr. 200 bucks is 1 days work... for a brand new real deal job is 200- but u think it's smarter to "save" 200" come out with junk and spend two to 4 days work on it to end up with crap- plus all materials and pure crap in the end. Some kind of special.
It takes more than 10 seconds so it takes too long? I'm sorry but it does not get quicker or easier than this. I've stripped chrome manually before, spending 2 weeks and hundreds of dollars on abrasive materials fits the bill of not quick or easy.
Yea- this is a great idea if u value ur time at 3 dollars per hr and have no issue with it looking like pure crap when ur done painting and u don't compare ur time to the cost of a new grille. " easy as it gets" words from a man who can't even value his time and in the end paid less than 1 per hr to end up with junk. Embarassing 😢
“Ford especially seems to have perfected doing the worst job possible” 😂 😂 😂
Lol
Love it
Made me so nervous seeing you grab that chrome plating with your bare hands. I’ve filleted myself a few times on that stuff. Sharp as a razor

I have also been searching for the best way to do this. Thanks for the help!
You're welcome!
@@backwoodsbuildingandfixing9223so basically any plastic that is chromed you can do this process?
I'm 63 and have owned many Fords in my lifetime. One thing i can say is the quality has continually gone down. Great video

Possibly a dumb question... Would using a spray bottle of water to speed the cooling change the results of delaminating the plastic?
Jesus in that first shot i was thinking either we were looking at a lunar lander or Thanksgiving leftovers.
great video... good call on recording while it happens and uplaoding that part at 4x !!
That is why I bought my 21 F150 with the sport package. No fake chrome.
That chrome veneer is just terrible. It bubbles and splits and looks like someone tried to cover the plastic with aluminum foil. Thanks for showing how you removed it!
Appreciate the candor.
So the heat gun is accelerating the suns job of removing the chrome?☀️
Up here it's the cold that does it, get a bit of moisture in there through rock chips or such and -30c pops that chrome right off
was litterally trying this earlier (2015 mustang gt) every other piece is covered in the chrome stuff, i hate it, but turns up i just wasn’t holding the heat gun long enough, thanks :)
It warps the hell out of some flat peices
Yeah it does bad on my dodge, gotta buy a new grille now

Almost looks like you could just fix the chrome with the heat gun
I thought the same. Thought he would try smoothing it out
@ZubaireQ I tried it on a part on my motorcycle. It works a little bit, but not completely.
This is the comment I came to find. Thinking of trying that for couple little pieces.
Worst case, it all gets removed and replaced. Lol

Great for the places that are bubbled already, but not so great for the adhered!
i was thinking of this method to de-chrome my running boards on my ram truck . this will work perfect then i plan to spray paint them
Don't do it
This works, but be careful as the chrome material is like a very thick, stiff foil and it will easily cut you.
If you sand blast it off will you damage the plastic?
Wear some gloves my friend. That plating can cut you. I had the same thing happen to me with some plastic chrome plated Honda door latches.
This is true. Mind you if shedding blood was bad leeches wouldn't have been the standard for medical care for centuries, amiright?
By the tome your done with rhe heat gun your electric bill will be a $1000 with the utility power rate increase

Is chrome paint the same thing as was on there from the factory? Or is it like dipped or wrapped?
