The way these wishes can be twisted is the real danger of the Wall of Wishes and the Ahamkara.

I think there's 2 people you're forgetting, Byf. Osiris and Saint-14. Osiris certainly yearns for the Light again. Saint-14 certainly wishes for Osiris to not face a final death. Imagine such a wish. Imagine Saint-14's light and Ghost being torn from him and given to another. Keep these two far from the Ahamkara AT EVERY COST.

When you consider this explanation of the power of wish magic as the space between the world as-is and the world as-desired, it makes a lot of sense why Ahamkara canonically appear in the wake of the Traveller.
The Traveller itself - as far as we can tell - has no unrequited desires. All it's ever seemed to want to do is to breathe life and light into every system it can touch, and as far as we've seen there's nothing else in the universe that can do that better than it can, so why would it want for anything?
The same however can't be said for all the other life forms that the Traveller touches, from the Witness itself all the way down to us. We've all wanted something *more* from the Traveller that what it provides as this unrestrained force of chaotic life. The being that would eventually become the Witness wanted the Traveller to give them meaning and purpose; the Eliksni wanted the Traveller to stay with them forever; Gaul wanted it to annoint him as worthy; and we want it to fit our moral definition of *good*, so that through weilding its power our actions will always be justified.
Deep down - even subconsciously - we're all *wishing* for the Traveller to give us a sign that we are special to it, and that it chose us for a reason - not just because we happened to be another stop on its flight-plan - and it seems that solace is the one thing the Traveller never grants to anyone. To an Ahamkara, that universe-spanning wake of unrequited desire must be like a trail of blood in the water to a pack of sharks.
Yeah. The Traveler leaves behind an all-you-can-eat buffet for wish dragons.

In a sense, The Traveler uplifting and granting it's powers of Light and life is in and of itself a double-egde sword.
The fact of the matter is that life does still require some hardship, challenge, and even suffering to grow. It gives context, understanding, and accomplishment as one rises above said challenges and grows stronger. The rewards for overcoming adversity and challenges become appreciated more and less taken as granted.
In some ways, there is hints of truth to the Sword Logic. Yet more so the Darkness itself.
Compared to powers of the Light, things like Strand and Stasis were not freely given. They had be earned through understanding what these powers actually were and represented. Strand especially tested and required a different mindset to use.
The Veil didn't freely give it secrets or power to the likes the Ishtar Collective, likely nor The Witness. To me this makes sense considering the Darkness represents the more metaphysical side of the cosmos. There is a reason the Darkness powers ask us to look within. It's the deep and hard questions about what it means to be conscious, to think and feel, and why. Where we fit in the grand scheme of things. Difficult questions to answer but nonetheless integral to a conscious mind.
I really hope we get an ahamkara themed ghost (like how we got the Pharmakos one this season) and it makes a baby dragon noise every time you take out your ghost.

Calling it now. Our wish at the end of the season will be "for a guide and safe passage through the veil" and that's gonna manifest into Cayde being resurrected inside there
ahamkara twist: he cannot leave...and we close the veil for good. (because bungie would do that)
The leak shows that Cayde isn't "alive" as it were in the real sense, more a "we go back in time and he's there". He also acts as a "guide" for us in non-physical form, kind of like Toland on the Moon.

Close the Portal through the traveler or cut the link between the traveler between the veil is more valid then closing the veil
Bringing back cayde as a somewhat ghost tho isn’t twisting it. Twisting it would be we are granted passage into the traveler but we can’t safely leave. We will need to find a way to make the wish without a twist like the wall of wishes that made it so riven would grant wishes but couldn’t twist them

If Zavala wished "to be reunited with old friends" can also be interpreted as a wish to finally die and join them in the afterlife. In DUNE, the Baron Harkonnen killed Yueh after the Baron recalled Yueh wished to be reunited with his wife. Yueh didn't realize she was already dead.
since byf was wondering how many possible inputs the wall of wishes had, its 17 to the power of 20. the math comes out to 4.0642314e+24, or 4,064,231,400,000,000,000,000,000 combinations. needless to say we are never gonna brute force the wall

WOW that idea with the inputting of wishes to impact the seasonal activity is so cool. we can "wish" for certain loot from the activity. kinda like the chalice from opulence but cooler. and it could scale as we progress the season being able to get more specific wishes. maybe we can guarantee certain features of weapons and armor. sort of like a training arc building up to wishing to enter the portal.

Perhaps the dueling dragons of light and dark could lead us into the story and episodic structure after the final shape. A wish dragon, so far as we know, feeds on the gap between what is and what is not. That's a hollow feeling. Let's call that a "yearning." What if a dragon were raised on the light beside the Traveler, never wanting for friendship, never needing to twist and decieve? Cruelty may be in their nature because we perceive them that way. What if it's first wish granted were to not feed on a yearning? What if a dragon were surrounded by hope and instead fed on the gap between what is and what _can_ be? Let's call that an "aspiration." Guardians are nothing if not human at their core. Some aspire to do good. Others yearn for a past they cannot know. Others want to inspire. Some just want to be paid. I foresee a time when Guardians become directionless after defeating the Witness. Idle minds and hands. Dueling dragons doling out wishes of similarly-aligned Guardians would, TRULY, be an epic proposition to entertain. Remember, monsters are real. They live inside us. And sometimes, they win.

I wonder if humanity will take after the Harmony and create a coalition with the Ahamkara. Maybe it would allow Guardians to wield Wish Magic as a power against our enemies? Would be a funny way to bring Riven back from our subconscious.
And, possibly lead to the next subclass
Bringing Riven back via our subconscious would bring Riven back as a taken still since we only ever knew Riven as the taken version
I like this. I personally think ahamkara less as adversaries and more as power that should be respected and used responsibly. Just look at mara sov and the harmony.
All power has risks. Doesnt mean it should be shunned entirely.
Riven wouldn’t be a good one to return. She’s taken and much more powerful than a normal ahamkara. The uncorrupted egg is the only way to bring back the species and make some form of alliance between us and the wish dragons.
Ik this will probably get lost in the comments, but do you think crow will have something to do with this season? He’s been awol for a bit, and it makes sense for him to want amanda back in the same way he wished for fikrul to return. May also be a bit of narrative significance in, just like how amanda found out that crow isn’t uldren, that amanda became a new person too. Just a thought
He will if it’s dreaming city related 100% he also just hasn’t shown up at all this year so it would be weird if we went quiet right now.

Defiance was disappointing and forgettable except for Amanda’s death. The previous times crow had shown up the season and story involved was interesting. (Lost/Mindscape season/ even hunt was a little more interesting and that was his first appearance as Crow.
I keep saying this other than lightfall and the aftershock were still feeling and suffering the consequences from...the game is great currently! Best dungeon, raid difficutly back, great narrative and shake up in seaosnal model.
I wouldn’t say the best dungeon difficulty tbh. Ghosts isn’t actually hard they just have so much hp. Need slightly harder mechanics with slightly lower hp. Crota tho I was busy that weekend so Dk how hard it really was iv heard was actually hard

Yeah, the game is actually n a good state and has been since Lightfall. The Lightfall story was definitely disappointing, but there have also been a ton of improvements thru this time period. And the seasonal content has been slowly getting better over the last couple years imo as well.
I think a lot of ppl r actually just burnt out and think the game is getting worse when it’s actually just that u eventually get tired of everything. Which is y I’ve always taken breaks periodically. As soon as it starts to feel like “I need to get on today” instead of “I want to get on today” I start playin somethin else. Then I come back n a couple months and things feel better.
The game is certainly objectively better than it used to be. Way more content. More complexity, tho maybe not much more. More QoL implementations. More progression goals and ways to show achievements off. Lots of good has come from this past year or 2.
Based off the way I understand it (thanks to you and others), an ahamkara might twist Zavala’s wish to join old friends, in a more direct manner. Like what if his wish were twisted so that he joined them…in a final death. Joining them in death and the afterlife if there is one.
for the sake of keeping everyone awake at night there's a lore tab on an exotic armour that mentions how the ahamkara "see through" the guardian and them having a desire to cross into our world.
Biff mentioned Mythrax being a possible wish maker, but I feel he had an oversight with Eido. Eido is younger and more naive, and could make a wish by accident
Musing about Ahamkara gets me thinking about doppelgangers in Destiny . When we interact with the darkness we often do this in whispers or interactions with our own physical sounds or form. It's not been spelled out anywhere, but shapeshifting could be a tool in sniffing out a being's wish. It could be as simple as having a conversation with yourself .... or the doppelgangers of a trusted confidant or lover. I seem to remember (though the source escapes me) that an Ahamkara spoke the phrase "I am your salvation" or the like. I'm probably wrong on this
Coincidence? the Ahamkara have followed the Traveler. Not as a ally, but more of a parasite more akin to an ally of the winnower... is there there a a connection to the flower game?

This next season will be a replay of the human dramas that we saw involving the nightmares in season of the haunted. It was some of the best content. Combining that with anything to do with The Dreaming City turns out to be Gold.
hopefully Bungie doesnt fall into some of the same narrative/creative mistakes the MCU did post-EndGame. Their narrative setup for after the final shape has the potential to do irreparable damage to Destiny's story/lore
I think Bungie has a lot more lore to draw upon for future stories in Destiny.

This is the most hyped I've been for a season of destiny before. Ahamkara are by far my favourite part of the universe and my biggest fear is that Bungie is just going to turn our egg friend into just another villain or worse, have it be killed off at the end of the season, manifested only to give us entry to the traveler and then killed off because it's served it's purpose. I really hope our new ahamkara has a lasting impact on the story, even if it doesn't become a main character and is just relegated to the side, I pray that we actually get to see it after the final shape.
I'm surprised how little time you spend on Cayde being wished back. That could be Ikora's wish since she misses him, and it might explain why she seems to be the first one through the portal when we see her talking to him in the trailer

I feel like theres a difference between the story being good, and the lore being good. Story being good keeps people playing who don't read lore tabs. Lore being good keeps us nerds around. The story needs to be told in a better way. While the lore from this season was on point, the story being told fell flat in the end and that drives people away.
Yup. Let's not forget how the aftermath of the seasonal cutscene was hidden in a lore tab, with Ikora referencing the end of the lore tab and not the cutscene directly after, before most people would have even read it.
They need to convey the essential story beats better, at least not in a confusing manner as they did in this case.
@@3ndlessL00p Exactly. On top of essential story beats, they need some cool side story beats in cutscenes as well. Like when Saint beat the ever living light out of Savathun and killed her countless times while having Immaru revive her. That one cutscene could have redeemed the lifelessness of this season. I will never forget what they did to Sagira offscreen as well...
Not gonna Lie i have taken a break from destiny 2 for 3 - 4 weeks now, and I am hyped about this next season. i really hope they nail this next season.

This may be a bit obvious, but I think I may have untangled the big “why” of why Ahamkara twist wishes. It’s not out of cruelty or spite, and it’s not merely a necessary byproduct of wish magic: it’s sustainability. If you make a wish, and you get what you want, the space between reality-as-is and reality-as-desired contracts. But if the wish goes bad, suddenly you desire things to have gone differently. “Oh, I wish I hadn’t made that wish!” The distance expands, more fertile ground for the Ahamkara to feed from in the future.
I think this is going to get really, really in depth. I think that Mara, Xur, and The Nine are going to come together for the wish.
The Nine and the Ahamkara have history. Mara and The Nine have history. Mara and the Ahamkara have history. And, of course, Xur works for The Nine.
I not only think this would tie together a lot of "loose" ends and give some more lore on The Nine.
The Nine and their existence is tied to ours. I think, honestly, if The Nine are left out of this season (and they don't have a solid, already planned out story for them) that it's a major missed opportunity.

Crow's hand let off a mix of ash and cinder as many hunters before him have done before. All that was left of an ambush of scorn was the remnants of solar energy that came from a paracasual gun. It reeked of burning, rotten flesh. However, the young ahamkara shivered with glee! Such malicious violence in their name!? Any beast would relish in the violence...and the casualty that echoes from it.
"oh [Prince] mine...Your light burns as you step on ancestral land. Fury of a by gone life...and the consequences you left for your people. You are no child...no Whim...I can see this. I can see that your heart yearns for another."
Crow watches in disgusted silence. He was warned time and time again that even thinking of a change will lead to a wish. He knew it was wrong to think it but... [How He Wished of a Different Outcome.]

Mithraax may be hesitant to use wish magic. He wasn't exactly eager for us to use those vessels of Nezerac. Speaking of Nezerac, he too seems to transcend his own death like an Ahamkara. Perhaps, this new dragon may decide to take the wishes from anyone that can get its ear, even in its nightmares. Although it may defy the sword logic, Xivu Arath's forces may also scramble to have the dragon restore some of her power if not un-bannish her from the ascendant plane.
Good stuff as always! Personally, as I read through the lore I came under the impression that Wishes getting twisted was less of an inherent trait of that magic but more of an active choice by the Ahamkara. I can't remember the name of the specific lore tab, but in it Riven describes how with certain Seekers, you craft the Wish in a way that they'll return- a sustainable way to gather more sustenance and power- take care with these ones, to keep them coming back. Naturally, for someone as old and powerful (and with good reasons to harbor some spite) as Riven, this tactic makes sense.
Alternatively, there's the plain fact that, well... Ahamkara are alien. Sure, we can communicate with them, but they aren't social creatures like humans are, don't have the same notions of morality or ethics that we do, so a young Wish Dragon granting someone a scuffed bargain could well be more out of genuine misunderstanding than active malice. But then the Hunt came around, and there came *plenty* of excuse for active malice
Imagine asking for something like a jar of spaghetti sauce from an ahamakara, like a Guardian found a super old cook book from the Golden age and really really wants to try spaghetti so he wishes for it, could the wish dragon's twist a wish like that?

Despite the doom and gloom, I am looking forward to next season and it's story and content. If this game can get through the Curse of Osiris, the DCV, and the state of the game 2023 post, we can get through this situation because all of those have something In common, we all say the game is dead during those times.
Shaxx (to Mara's delight) stated that the story about Mara and Sjur talking about love and godhood was simply not true. We don't know what part of it was actually a lie, but from what Shaxx said it seemed that Sjur couldn't care less about someone being or not being a god. So she and Mara were already together, there was nothing more to wish for in that regard. Furthermore, Mara could have tried to get Sjur back while Riven was still alive, but she knew better than that.
The actual wish she will likely make is to lift the Dreaming City curse. The City was cursed with a wish and it's likely the only thing that can help us to get rid of the curse.
Im begging, on my knees hoping we get an Eliksni guardian or a Cabal guardian, who knows we could get a new Vanguard comprised of a guardian from each allied faction, Cabal for Titans, Fallen for warlocks and Crow finally do something.
god if we're raising the baby ahamkara on the wishing wall we're basically doing the wish dragon version of giving a cat a bell. it learns to hunt with the bell then if it ever gets the bell off its like it removed its training weights and is insanely cracked at it
So glad we weren't forced to dick around with the wish wall more. The amount of times I've put in the Shuro Chi wish since the raid came out...
The teaser shows a Taken Ahamkara, so clearly Mara's one hatches or already has, and Mara knows how to make the wishes more effective, and we have the inputs from Savathun to use on the Wall of Wishes. So no doubt we will be spending a lot of time in the Dreaming City, and Mara will be a focus again. AND she consumed the Worm let's not forget...I still can't decide who's side she's on.
She didn't consume the worm. The worm is in our Parasite grenade launcher.
Also, I keep saying this, but I'm still not sure if the teaser art is really showing a taken or albino Ahamkara, as it will appear in-game, or if it's just a stylistic color scheme for the art of the season. I think we will have to wait and see.

theres one way for the seasonal story to go right but with wish magic and the players in hand the potenial for it to go wrong is massive well time to see where this leads up next week

383 centuries to test every combination on the Wall of Wishes with each combination tested every second.
Don't get me wrong, I *totally* want to see Sjur return in any sort of capacity. But I think, with the Mara case, you're missing one other important point of wishful weakness. She still has some very conflicting feelings surrounding her estranged brother Crow. He's been out of the limelight for a bit here, and Mara's desires to be reunited with her brother could be what brings Crow back to the stage. And of course, there's no shortage of ways for an Ahamkara to twist that wish to devilish effect. We could even potentially see old Uldren return, should that magic really go awry.
(Sorry for length. I'm just thorough with my thoughts is all.)
I had thought/theory a while back about future power gains through the elements/subclasses.
If the new baddies are going to be the ascendant beings that once lived in the ascendant plane (theory being they've been trapped in The Deep as prisoners whispering and influencing through the metaphorical/metaphysical bars), it's been a wonder for me about the elements and their existence as a whole. Solar, void, arc, stasis, and strand and things were "created" from or as a byproduct of existence, tied to life and creation.
In the future, it could be a realization that the elements do have a form of sentience that's been limited, cut off, since the The Deep prison was used. Opening that prison could reveal that while we've been using the elements as tools, we haven't been able to utilize their full potential as companion entities and have a campaign to regain the abilities (and then some) with cooperation with the elements.
A path opening up where they fight with us against the new big baddies. Elemental beings who don't just give buffs and personal abilities, but take on forms to defend and attack enemies as companions with additional buffs to take on the ascendant beings.
It could also tap into the history of the Vex. In a way, they were maybe influenced by elementals in the beginning. Vex could be responsible for life that spread across this universe. Most evolved differently, mutated, changed, adapted, all life in the universe seeded by the original Vex. Some falling onto plants in comets and asteroids very soon, while other spend millions of years before planet fall. Their evolved substrates resulting in all the different designs and traits of lifeforms across the universe. The reason why radiolaria helps stabilize Exos is because it's the genuine basic, original genetic/metaphysics block of all life in this Universe, made of both Light and Darkness, created similarly to how the Awoken were created during the beginning of Light & Darkness war. Add in that using Clarity to create Alkahest adds enough darkness energy to effectively balance everything out.
I think its safe to say nobody knows how wish magic works. But I'm not sure Eido could be made a guardian by wish magic.
Last time someone made a wish to ressurect any eliksni, we got the Scorn.

My current idea is that the Traveler doesn't bring about the Ahamkara.
It's that the Traveler (and by extension the Veil) are the result of the wish of the Gardener to change the Game.

I feel like the sacrifice might be the destruction of the Tower, or something similar, because why would Ikora and Zavala be coming through? Wouldn't they wait for us to do everything like how they've always done?
Since it’s the end it could be there going to be venders along with cayde in the new destination. Even just coming with us this time as it’s supposed to be all or nothing in final shape

He’d need to specifically say he wished for them be be revived or something around that. Otherwise any ahamkara would see that as him wishing to die

I’ve been thinking about this for the last few videos on the Ahamkara. I don’t have solid, concrete like “this is true” proof, but I feel like Wish Magic could fall under the category of “Darkness” based off the Lightfall cutscene where Osiris lore-dumps about Light and Dark powers. These Wish-Magics, for lack of a better term, just sound like they tick every box Osiris laid out in that cutscene. Now, could Wish Magic be something completely and utterly different from Darkness, yes. All this is, is kind of speculation and a feeling more than anything else. But if true, it would mean Guardians might have used the powers of Darkness since long before we got our first subclass, and depending on the timeline, even before those major events of the lore. And those Guardians would never have known it was Darkness. Again, only IF we can accept Wish-Magics as categorically and definitively, Darkness.
Darkness is all about the subconscious; the metaphysical. Light is about the physical universe. A wish dragon’s ability seems to link the two. They take the subconscious gaps between a person’s desires and expectations, and manifest physical changes in the universe.
There’s been hints that the Ahamkara are related the the Worm Gods. If the proto-worms (like Ahsa) are light-oriented, and the Worm Gods are darkness-corrupted. Then I’m eager to see if we get explanation on how the Ahamkara fit in.

@@Razzy-sr4oq Could you elaborate? I was under the assumption that the Veil was related to the darkness. Like the Witness isn’t *the* darkness, just an entity that uses it, whereas the Veil is like the physical manifestation do the actual darkness. It’s like the “mind and memory of the universe” or something.
@@mose3775 Just as the Veil is a physical manifestation of something intangible, the wish dragons feed on the gap of what is and what isn't. They're empowered by the intangible. Their magic makes the intangible and unspoken become reality.

Just a thought about wish magic: taking desires and thoughts (aspects of darkness) and brings them into reality (area of light), couldn't this be considered a conduit between light and dark? And by learning about that transfer of energy we will be able to safely pass through the portal in the Traveler
Imagine throughout the season more and more of friends discover the existence of the egg and everyone wants their hands on it and we have keep the egg away from our friends before a wish is granted that will cause irreparable harm

I don't think Caiatl will want to truck with an Ahamkara now of all times - especially with the news that Xivu Arath can be killed like any other hive. Hell, just the *idea* if being able to fistfight Xivu and kill her with her bare hands would probably have Caiatl frothing at the mouth - why would she spoil that with some supernatural mumbo jumbo?
I was already expecting Eido to be risen as the first Eliksni guardian aince Season of the Plunder, I was expecting her to perish at the end of the season and later be brought back where seaaon of the deep started or something
Hey mr. Byf, all this wish magic talk made me curious, if you have ever thought of categorizing the tiers of power in the destiny universe. Surely, even if wish magic is strong, it cannot displace something more powerful than itself. For example, you can’t wish to see the Nine from an ahamkara, right? If we are wishing a pathway inside the traveler from a wish dragon, does that mean its power is strong enough to exact that wish?

All of your "what if..." cases for the wishes are very interesting BUT you forgot to focus on our still outstanding enemies; what if Eramis, or Xivu, or even Savathun get access to the wish wall for just one wish. The results could be problematic to say the least. I'm also wondering if we'll even be using the wish wall in the raid. That one might have been specifically made for Riven. What if next season we have to build our own in the last part of the HELM and use it to teach the new little dragon how not to be a menance.
