I've been doing some research and it seems that Apple has applied a coating to the leather that prevents it from forming a nice patina. The sharp edges of the iPhone 12 and 13 create uneven wear compared to the iPhone 11 with its rounded edges. You can remove the coating by using 400 grit sandpaper, wiping the case with alcohol wipes, or applying acetone/nail-polish remover.
