Stupid console wars! The PlayStation and N64 were both winners. During no other generation was there such a diverse and awesome take on gaming by two very different companies, with boat loads of great games on both sides. Lots of pride in this generation.
+Phantom1op But during this 5th gen was an explosion of all types of games, mostly from the PS side along with Nintendo's well known properties. The Saturn's early demise probably was a huge factor as well. Otherwise the Saturn would've shared games with PS, I theorize.
White Knight 5 maybe, but we have to admit that at least it is still remembered by Sega's fans unlike the Jaguar (which is sad because i actually kind of like the Jaguar) which is only really remembered because of the AVGN review.
+Phantom1op I'd argue the Saturn was a better console, hardware wise. But that's another story. I remember the Jaguar. Not too fondly since my buddy only had two games with it: Zool and some 3D flight game. I fondly remember the 32X add on for the Genesis.
It was very unfair to give the point to the Playstation for 'Innovative Features'. The N64 introduced the rumble pack, joystick, Expansion pack, Microphone and the Gameboy transfer pack. You gave one example about how the Playstation used CDs instead of cartridges but the Saturn and Sega CD were doing that before the Playstation was. It was hardly 'innovation'
finsfan90 All companies inspire each other (Sony's Eye toy came out years before the Wii/360 Kinect), which is fine. But you can't claim 'innovation' if you've basically done something another company has already done
+CornishCreamtea07 Yeah, Nintendo's never really been good with 3rd party developed games, one of the reasons I prefer Sony, as they've always done good with both.
+MetaMarc Most of the N64s titles were crap over priced PSX ports that had features like video and audio removed just to fit it on to cartridge.Take Tony Hawks series and shadowman for example.
I know I'm late but I mean come on dude Nintendo since the Wii has tried to be different like look at the Switch it's so different from the other consoles it's why it sells so well
+Martin Nguyen i had both and i never owned a sega until Dreamcast came. and i still get nintendo and playstation but after wii i went all Sony. still waiting for a great nintendo consol
+Martin Nguyen I wish I still had mine and remember when I first got it along with the first 2 PS games Twisted Metal and Disney's Tarzan. I remember that I wanted N64 instead but my parents told me that we were getting PS1 instead( I thought that was a total bummer) cause I think they said it was cheaper? Idk but I fell in love with it anyway and I still own the PS2 and a PS3.
+Artyom Bogomaz a lot of good games to mention lol, rayman 2 is another.. for PS1 and N64, the PS1 version of rayman 2 was absolute garbage but N64 version was amazing.
+David Wirtzwirtz Tony Hawk was much better on the PS1 because it actually had the full soundtrack, lyrics and all. Plus the controller was better for it.
+randumo24 actually the Saturn was a great system, it was best at Capcom 2D fighters. I used play my neighbor everyday with all the Capcom Saturn ports and they where head and shoulders better than the Sony versions.
Yes, there was actually a time when Nintendo had the most powerful console on the market as far as hardware goes. They had the lead in that area until the Sega Dreamcast launched. Odd considering that now Nintendo is known for always having the least powerful hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles.
N64 was never more powerful overall than ps1. Ps1 had fmv, and actually had one of if not the best soundchip in its generation. The n64 literally is a step back from the snes since n64 literally had no dedicated soundchip. Storage space sucked on n64 and ran cartridges. Ps1 ran cds and played movies known as vcds. Only thing the n64 had over ps1 was more controller ports, less loading times, and had better looking true 3d games i would say. Overall ps1 was graphically more well rounded and had better hardware features. Plus the controller was better too since it literally has the blueprint that has been followed up to the ps5 with obvious improvements since the ps1.
@@angrymobsters1599 By raw specs the N64 was more powerful than the PS1. The N64 CPU was a lot faster that the PS1 CPU (93 MHz vs. 33 MHz) which is almost triple the speed, and the N64 also had double the amount of RAM as the PS1 (4 MB vs. 2 MB). Also, the N64 GPU was capable of trilinear filtering which the PS1 could not do. There were some things the PS1 did better, but overall the N64 had the more powerful hardware.
@@pauldavis5665 all that hardware just to be crippled by storage limitations. Imagine current consoles being limited to games 1gb or less in size. Kinda pointless.
@@robertsrt True. Nintendo staying with the cartridge format rather then embracing the CD-ROM was a mistake. That was a pretty big bottleneck for the N64 and prevented developers from taking full advantage of the full hardware capabilities. But I still think games looked better overall on the N64 over the PS1 even with that limitation.
I think it's because the N64s format inhibited the console, put constraints on its ability. Nintendo were still in the 80s, using cartridge based technology, while all the other competitors were upgrading to cd. Graphics were superior on the n64 but they suffered from ghosting fog, pop up and soundtracks were limited. The PS1 indeed won the console war and had a 10 year reign -although this was mostly down to clever marketting, competative pricing, a great software catalogue and a superior storage format.
+RedWolf316 I'm pretty sure N64 was more powerful than both. I believe Saturn and Playstation were roughly equal when all's said and done, but I don't remember the exact specs, so don't quote me on that. There was a nice article on this exact topic, comparing the three consoles (as well as a few others, I believe) somewhere on the web, but I can't remember where for the life of me; I saw it a long time ago and never bookmarked it.
+CAX 117 powerful doest mean better games. Same as 3ds and vita. By the look of it, nintendo will create a powerfull game using the NX but i think ps4 and xbone will remain.
+triforce1980 what an awesome game, I didn't want my comment to be too long but I could have continued all day listing off great games on the N64. Wave race, body harvest, perfect dark, starfox, pilot wings etc etc. I have such good memories of it.
LaurensGaming agreed its like comparing an playstation to a Nintendo switch like the switch is so good that they outsold Nintendo Switch in a minute but when it comes to n64 vs ps1 I love Nintendo 64 the most not because of some sort of console war it’s just that I love n64 like I grew up using n64 and GameCube I know GameCube wasn’t the best but I loved it like I return to GameCube and Nintendo 64 so much that I don’t even know
N64 was so much more revolutionary. It introduced a joystick on the controller, rumble pak, demonstrated how to properly translate a 2D game into a 3D game(Super mario 64), and gave us 4 player split screen
@@sonicman9910 Besides using discs which provide more storage the PS1 was inferior in all technical ways to the N64. The N64 was released 2 years after the PS1 so it was in fact the stronger console.
@@kuromifan10 Yup, we would have seen FF7 on N64 and more 3rd party games. Nintendo went for the cartridge thing in order to avoid piracy, but we know how that went :/ .
PS1 takes this easily. It had a lot more variety of games that were incredible. It was a combination of quality AND quantity with solid, classic titles like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3, Spider-Man, the SmackDown! games, Colony Wars (a fantastic yet criminally underrated game), Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy 7 etc, Chrono Cross and so on.. N64 had some good titles too, specifically the Mario games, Conker's Bad Fur Day and WWF No Mercy, the Rare games, but they weren't all that big in the library and couldn't beat the PS1 games IMO.
***** The PS1 does that shaky thing because the PS1 builds its game graphics using a thing called Integer-Based Arithmetic meaning not every 3D graphic angle could be made so to make up for it, it would "shake".
+ivanthelovehammer barely few games had aged well on either system N64 Ocarina of Time Star Fox 64 PS1 Crash Bandicoot Spyro The Dragon pretty much every other game on either system didn't age well, GoldenEye, Metal Gear Solid, Donkey Kong 64, Tomb Raider, etc
Baigandine L I don't think so, definitely Spyro looks better, although that may not be fair. Mario was a 96 launch title, while Spyro came a couple years later.
ACACE10 Maybe you're right. The speed is impressive. The texture is a bit minimalist when compared to something like Banjo. But these are cartoons anyway.
I remember being presented with this choice when they first came out. My sister said, "Get a PlayStation", my friend at the time said, "Get a Nintendo 64". After playing Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Tekken, I went with the PlayStation. I'm glad I did. Still, my friend had the Nintendo 64 and I did have fun with that too. But I'd still go with PlayStation.
+Matt “Spider-Matt” Thornton ? terrible titles, you must have not played supemario, zelda, banjo, mariokart, supersmash? really the only thing ps1 had was finalfantasy that its evyerhting else was trash. not nowadays no comp ps4 obvioulsy shits on ninendo, man i feel sorry for u
+vickg9218 hey, I'm not dissing Nintendo 64. I played Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie and Zelda. They were all awesome. I was just at that age where I played Oddworld, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider and preferred the maturer stuff. Both consoles were amazing.
@@vickg9218 PS1 has: Metal Gear Solid Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Resident Evil 1-3 Final Fantasy 7-9 Mega Man 8, X4-X5(It also had X6 but that game was horrible) Crash Bandicoot 1-3 Spyro 1-3 and so much more
I actually bought the Nintendo 64 BEFORE I got the PlayStation back then. But, the Nintendo 64's games were overpriced and there were FAR less N64 games than PlayStation games. That is, for every 1 N64 game there 10 more PlayStation games. The only games I liked on N64 were Mario 64 and Mario Kart. I think that Nintendo shot themselves in the foot and missed the boat by not making N64 CD-ROM based when they were thinking about it and had the chance. If they would have done that, the PlayStation generation would have probably been short-lived. After I bought PlayStation, my N64 ended up collecting dust and I ended up playing/buying A LOT more PlayStation games than N64 games. And I wasn't the only one! EVERYBODY liked PlayStation. This includes most of my friends, neighborhoods, relatives, college friends, girlfriends and most non-gamers too. People were impressed with the fact that PlayStation games looked or ran like movies; I could also upload my own audio while playing a game; PlayStation had more sports games and PlayStation not only could be used as a game system, but it could be used as a CD player as well. So, the PlayStation was used at parties too. PlayStation was simply a win win win. And that is why everybody liked it! After maybe Mario, hardly anybody played N64. PlayStation simply had A LOT more to offer with games and everything else. And Sony STILL do now with PS4! And a lot of people STILL like PlayStation products!
@Risen General The case about GoldenEye is the fact that it was one of the first FPS on consoles. GoldenEye was very important, on this case, for console industry, to help to take this kind of games from PCs to consoles. And the fun about this game is the four players mode. One of the best memories from my childhood, about videogames, is playing "007 - GoldenEye" with four friends, everyone trying to stole the golden gun from the others. Nostalgic!
@Risen General (Hi! Sorry to response too late. I was busy by these days). I agree ("Turok" was/is amazing, although I think "Goldeneye" was amazing too). And, in fact: It was difficult to have to pay so expensive in a cartridge, while CDs were much cheaper.
4:19 The DualShock was actually not the first PS1 controller to have the 2 analog sticks. The more obscure (but still 1st party) Dual-analog was actually the first to do so, predating the DualShock by about a year or 2
My n64 never got played. I hated the controller. I guess I was in my early 20's and nintendo just didn't appeal to me. Ps1 was just better. MGS, Crash, Twisted Metal, FF 7, and 8. Tekken, The list goes on. Even now my n64 want list stops at around 10 games. PS1 had millions of good games it seemed.
+Jk K millions and somehow someone always brings out fucking ff VII when final fantasy tactics came out in that console, the playstation had a lot, and i mean A LOT of terrible games things of the likes of disney games and army men.
MANNLIERMANNCO ha and Nintendo fanboys always get all butt hurt when you say another console was better than theirs. N64 games I care about: Mario 64, the Zeldas, Mario kart, rogue squadron, Conker, Kirby, f zero, star Fox, dk Racing, banjo games, Smash. Paper Mario. That's about it. And no I don't care about the ancient fps games on it. Killer instinct was better on snes. No other good fighters or rpgs. Who needs old racing games? No metroid, no punchout. And everything else was pretty much on ps1 and cheaper too
+Jk K "ha and Nintendo fanboys always get all butt hurt when you say another console was better than theirs." Same can be said with Sony fanboys. They always try to defend Sony and the PS1. See how stupid what you said is ?
Yeah, the first time I held a Nintendo 64 controller I felt it was a perfect fit for the games you played on it. Everything clicked. I had no problem picking up and playing Super Mario 64, Goldeneye or anything else right off the bat. Granted the Gamecube controller was a better design later on.
PS1 Games I liked Spyro 1-3, Crash 2 & 3, Crash Team Racing, Street fighter ex plus alpha & EX2 plus, Street fighter alpha 2 & 3, Tekken 2 & 3, GTA 1 & 2, Smackdown 2 Know Your Role, Parasite Eve 1, Resident Evil 1-3, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, Einhander, N20 Nitrious Oxide, Metal Gear Solid, Time Crisis 1, Fighting Force, Megaman X4 & X5, Strider 2, Raiden Project, Megaman Legends 1 & 2. N64 Games I liked Super Smash Bros, Starfox 64, WWF/WWE No Mercy, Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 I respect the N64 for what it is but the PS1 wins for me.
+Tristan D for ps1 dont forget bloody roar 1-2, vanguard bandits, final fantasy 7-9, xenogears, twisted metal, bushido blade 2, oddworld, armored core, soul blade, wwf attitude, dynasty warriors (the fighting game), romance of the three kingdoms 4 n64-golden eye
@Zachary Collins Omg that was one of my all time favourite games!!! I'm trying to think of the perfect word to describe that game! It was genius! And I can honestly tell you that no other game has ever made me feel or care as much as that game did! Majoras mask for the N64 was a true masterpiece!!
I bought both at the time. But exchanged my ps1 for a Japanese import n64 as soon as available. Sold it when years flew by, but the nostalgia kicked in and today I own 5 n64 models and 3 ps1's.. And a lot more other consoles, accessories and games. Things I couldn't buy at the time or for other reasons. I like the n64 a bit more, because of the cartridges and more fun gameplay. No loading times and way more reliable hardware. Also the controller of the n64 suits me more.
Sander K That’s awesome. I own a crystal red, blue, and launch model N64. I only own 1 PS and 1 PS One; they’re kinda irrelevant since I own 1 silver PS2, 1 white PS2, and 2 black PS2’s; I also have 3 launch day 60GB PS3’s.
I remember buying the 64.... getting home and HATING the controller! what a waste of money i thought. 3 days later....... OMG this is the BEST controller ever! to this day maybe apart from the Wii it was such a leap forward. loved both consoles and owned both consoles. BTW these were a few years apart so not reallt a comparision. maybe 64 v saturn
They're both GREAT consoles with amazing games all around! :) I found myself replaying a lot of PS1 games, some from my childhood, and some that I've never played before and they really got me hooked in for hours on end. Especially Silent Hill and Colony Wars. N64's Smash Bros. is still sick! come on guys, stop the hate and just enjoy all the memories they've both given us. We're all winners here.
Nintendo should've stuck to the numbering system of the N64, calling their next console N65 and so on. By today their newest console would be called the Nintendo 69.
N64 games are still holding up alot better in the mid to late 2010s over ps1 one games, the games were fewer on n64 but way way better, and critically acclaimed and again n64s games just play and look better in 1996 and even 2018 over ps1, n64 is winner in my option, even if it had a M shaped controller and no Cds
As a kid i would agree but today im older and want something deeper the collect 120 stars to save the princess and metal gear is doing just that had my first playthru this year and enjoyed it a lot! The super smash bros titles are going to be my all time favorites next to the mass effect trilogy
@D core thats right 🙈 zelda is deep and a good game final fantasy 7/8/9 are also deep dont forget castlevania symphony of the night and not deep but challenging are the megaman X 3-6 titles
zelda foxx no it doesnt but what i meant was that sony and nintendo had great games but sony had more gret games. The n64 struggled in its later years to deliver such good games.
+zelda foxx well no matter how good they are if your keep playing the same theme, the same characters, the same format it will soon become pretty stale. PS1 had A LOT of a games and A LOT of them are Great. They have something to offer for everyone... Kids can play Spyro, Crash, Gex whil adults can play Resident Evil, Thrill Kill, Metal Gear.
I agree with you but the first time I saw Ocarina of time...Wow It was so magical!Yes thats the better word to describe my feeling back in the day man,It was simply magical...(And Im a Sony boy)
When I was little my mom made me choose what system I was going to stick with, The PS1 or the N64 I chose the PS1 and I never regretted that decision since, That was in 1995 and today I still have my original grey PS1 with all my games in mint condition
Niklas K. Yup those games were the best, I had Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo 1, Bloody Roar, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil 1-3 and I had WWF Smackdown 1-2, I had WWF Raw Is War but lost it
How is it overrated? That's a pretty retarded thing to say. The PS2 deserved its praise and it's the most sold console ever. Also, the N64 is not the best. The PSX has better games and a better controller.
I would have disagreed based on Ocarina of Time being one of my number one games of all time. But... It was included on the Gamecube version of The Wind Waker making the Gamecube the console that I actually played it all the way through on. We also had Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin on GC so... you do have point.
What about FF7, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Crash, Castlevania? Are you crazy? Those games I named usually get a spot in top ten games of all time.
I was fortunate to have both growing up. Being around 14-15 when they came out I honestly remember the n64 being more impressive. And without a doubt it holds up better over time. I still to this day have buddies over and we play some GoldenEye and Mario kart. With some adult beverages of course haha. So if I had to pick 1, the n64 is superior.
i remember being taken to the store to buy a ps1 when i was 7 years old. its 1 of the best memories ever . i got resident evil 2 and the tryhard worker tried to talk my dad out of it lmao. called my best friend over and we played ps1 the entire night and didnt go to sleep until 6am haha..then christmas came around and my mom got me and my bro a n64 cuz hes a couple years younger than me and she wanted us to have more kid friendly games but 007 was one of the games we got 1st🤣🤣👍👍.
+Ronin Jeremy Yeah, bought my playstation myself. Even though I was in jr high I saved up with odd jobs and christmas/birthday money. I picked the ps1 because of doom 2 and the cd factor.
+Ronin Jeremy I guess the assumption was that most gamer with their own expendable income would have been PC gamers anyway, which used to be quite expensive compared to consoles at the time.
I can see that, my income as a young teen was just not high enough income for a PC. Worked all summer just for a playstation. 60$ a week was rough lol.
What I like about this generation is that both consoles were different enough so that both consoles were worth it in the end. N64 had the strong first party support, 4 player support of the bat, better graphics, and better performance but the PS1 had its improvements with increase in space, higher quality from music and sound, FMVs, and stronger third party support from the bigger boys like Konami, Square, and Capcom. Really no winner in terms of system performance, quality, or even library imo.
Too true. individual aspects may see one console over the other, but all things considered they really do tie, which is weird considering how massively different they were.
the wii u is not. the only difference is processing power and graphical capabilities, Activision basically ported over the Xbox360 version of BO2 to the Wii U
@@denis-florian_0.57 They both have a d-pad on the left, start and select buttons in the middle, 4 buttons in formation of a cross on the right, and trigger buttons. The only thing the ps one controller added was another set of trigger buttons, and handles(although handles already existed on other controllers, the snes controller didn't have that.)
just a note; Resident Evil was not a PlayStation exclusive, it was released on the Saturn too. Tomb Raider was actually released on the Saturn first, about a week ahead of the PlayStation, in the UK at least.
budal15 The PlayStation was popular and lots of people remember these games from playing them there,... but that's not invalidating my point. Even the first two WipeOut games weren't PlayStation exclusives, the series only becoming exclusive to Sony when they bought the developer, Psygnosis.
I'm surprised they didn't mention total sales figures. N64 - 32 million PS1 - 102 million. I enjoyed both consoles for different reasons but I wonder why PS1 sold so much more. Was it cheaper? This is a real question btw...
Discs are cheaper to produce than cartridges. Which gave the PSX an advantage in sales numbers. Other than having some good titles.. Btw I owned an N64 back then and still do.
The major problem of the n64 was the use of cartridges, the big limitation was responsible for the fact that we never saw the maximum power of the n64's hardware
ELVISFX there is nothing wrong with carts in fact I like them better and I'll tell you why. Carts load faster, disks are easy to destroy regardless of you being an adult or kid, they last waaaaaayyy longer,in my opinion they look cooler, and disks glitch more.
Wouldn't it have been possible for them to make a system that used multiple cartridges at the same time? That would have been smart. Even the game cases could have been designed so that they didn't take up so much space.
PS1 is a clear winner in my heart because that was my first gaming system that is high tech and innovative at the time. Oh I miss my childhood, playing FF7, FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, Resident evil 2-3 and many more.... Thanks Sony!
@@m.devellis had both, at the time, I enjoyed the depth of the games on the PS1 but, times come when you just want a bit of fun on the console and that's where the n64 kicks ps butt. Also for that reason, the PS1 doesn't do deep story games well at all by today's standards but the n64 is still fun. There was no right or wrong machine in the 90s but now if I were to get 1, n64 all the way
I had a PSone. I like n64 for the mario's and Goldeneye, perfect dark etc. but PSone had like, 10 exclusives for every 1 exclusives and third party support out the ass. N64 had hardly any 2d fighting games and like, 300 titles compared to psone's over a thousand
+randumo24 Backwards compatibility on the PS3 almost destroyed the PlayStation franchise. The system sold terribly because of how overpriced it was, and that was with Sony taking a $300 loss on each console. Taking backwards compatibility away saved PlayStation.
+Constantinos Michael My PS one broke after 4 years. My PS2 broke after 2 years. My second PS2 broke after 2 years. My third PS2 has hardly been touched. My N64 still works perfectly.
KiWii Dash exactly. ocarina of time was an amazing game, and it was the one saving grace for that mediocre console. ps1 on the other hand had so many classics to even start naming. i donno... i would have thought this would be a no-brainer
@@bartsimpsongoatbootleg682 speaking from fact. The plethora amount of first party games also supports my "opinion". It had the better line up period. It sits at number one for a well and deserved reason.
Playstation was alot better than the Nintendo 64, it was a much better console with CD-Rom technology, while Nintendo still relied on the old junky cartridges that would end up not even working in over time and plus the Playstation had much better games at the time like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil and not to mention the N64 console itself was crap also
That's strange, my N64 that I got back in '96 still works to this day. None of the games or the system have broken yet.. While I like the Playstation, over time, the laser optics or the CD motor will have to be repaired. Playstation had a superior library and video quality, but not built to last.
+liveswired that they will, and besides you can't pick up your ps1 today and play for two reasons. One, the disks are easily scratched and I would totally support a Cartridge console today. And two, the games are forgetable, once you finish them there's no replay value, but the n64's games are still beloved today
@Mammoth Supremacy 55 Yes, pretty much everything the PS1 did, the N64 also did, crash bandicoot = mario 64, mgs = goldeneye. Except N64 has Ocarina of Time, which is widely considered one of, if not the best game of all time
I love both systems, although when it came to playing Nightmare Creatures, Forsaken, Army Men, Command & Conquer and others games on both systems, it seemed like the N64 offered more. Yeah, the PS one had more realistic video clips and all, but the N64 would offer you more weapon options, extra multiplayer options, no memory card required most of the time, weapons that would double your health (Nightmare Creatures final sword for example), extra levels, longer levels, etc.
Sony PlayStation is the clear winner. Metal Gear Solid, RPG games, Medal of Honor series, Legacy of Kain series, Strider 2, Fighting games, Silent Hill, Resident Evil series, Tomb Raider series, Racing games, MDK, Shooters and a huge amount of 3rd party support. The N64 can't touch the PS-X in terms of support/games. But the N64 does have some classics. They are the Zelda games, THQ/Aki wrestling games, GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. Personally, it is a tough choice to choose. I personally love the N64 for personal reasons but if I really had to choose, I'm going with the PS-X.
N64 had a much better exclusive lineup, and much better hardware. All the PS1 had going for it as a console was the use of discs (although that came with it looong load times, so its not even much of an advantage).. and it was the first to have dual analogs, but they really stole the analog stick from Nintendo so.. :P It's not even a competition, really, N64 wins when you get down to brass tacks.
+Daniel Roberts I'm sure he doesn't care and also who you meant it for, I wasn't being a smart ass but seems like everyone's stuck with multiplayer now a days. Turok was pretty much an exclusive that would destroy any PSX exclusives.
+Yunis Rajab I did love me some Zelda. But FF7 is the game that sold the Playstation. Not a coincidence that within 2 months of that game's release, PS1 sales skyrocketed.
The story is much, much deeper than most people give it credit for. There are many subtle details abzout the story that make it really come to life. Also, Cloud was awesome before the spinoffs made him emo
Yet I’m a kid and I have fun playing frickin NES games. Plus, I wanna be a video game console collector someday so that might give me a chance to get a PlayStation and N64. Whenever I see these types of comments I feel like I just have to reply to them.
I loved and owned both. I tended to play N64 on my own a lot because I loved the AKI wrestling games, OoT, and Mario. I loved FFVII and MGS, but mostly PS1 was my go-to when I wanted to play something with a friend because it had such a vast library. I think a tie is pretty fair.
Calling the round of exclusive titles "very, very close" is ridiculous. If Nintendo has only one thing going for it, it's that it's exclusives are untouchable.
Happy to see this as a tie. Both systems were just too good to pick one. I grew up with the N64 but played PS1 at friends houses. Games are the main reason to pick a favorite console imo and both had such good games that are still some of my favorites of all time. So in this case a tie feels justified. Where is the Sega Saturn on this list?
Here's one to tip the scale in ps1's favor and that is, that it supported pirated games which made games much more accessible to a broader audience than N64. Back in the days the rivalry between those 2 was real, but majority of people that I know decided to go with sony instead of nintendo just because of this fact. Just ask yourself, would you rather have 200+ games at your disposal or 5 to 6 games :D
TheDuckClock Wasn't really aware of that, before ps1, I owned sega, SNES and NES and all of them used cartridges and couldn't be pirated, so coming from that I concluded it would be the same with N64, after ps1 I've switched to PC...
+Stefan Petrovic you got the point right, I lived this generation on my teens. PS1 was chipped easy, compared to ps2 in older versions you could switch a orignal game to the pirated and you could play the pirated without the special chip, not 100% working and in later ps1 bios you really wanted the chip. Nintendo lost the battle because of piracy, the N64DD should be better or the N64 from the start.
Fehtry Dick Nnnot so hard to say. Let me correct this shit properly: Graphics = N64 Controller = N64 Loading = N64 Scenes = N64 Games = N64 Like you can see, overall, the N64 wins.
I said the exact same thing lol. That clown holding the N64 controller was holding it like a moron, claiming it was awkward while holding the analog handle AND the D-pad handle. Id like to know exactly what game required that specific config, because I'VE never seen it. Then turns around and says the PS1 controller was innovative, while the narrator literally says its a copy of the Super Nintendo design. N64 by a mile, and its not even close.
@@RedRaider14 Actually, holding the Analog and D-pad handle is great for FPS games! Use the D pad to move and the analog to aim, Z to shoot. Feels super comfortable! N64 controller was a case of wasted genius, people rarely realize how cusomizable it is.. You can hold it multiple ways for different games. It's really fun. I kinda hate how controllers are all homogenized now, basically all rip off the basic 360 shape over and over again, even the switch controllers..
I had both back then (and still have them) and I must say I spent playing N64 more. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Doom 64, Conquer, Mario Kart, Banjo_&Kazooie...honestly those games were so much better than anything on PSX that my PSX was mostly waiting and I played only RPGs on it. I loved Xenogears - my favorite PSX game and it was on par with N64 games I mentioned.
+TheGrandRevo I wouldn't say the Xbox sucked, it had some good stuff (Morrowind, Kotor, Halo) but not anywhere near as many as the PS2. And I know people hate hearing this but its true, the Wii really was just a casual gaming system (hence why it did as well as it did). When you compare the quality of its games (especially 3rd party ones) to what the PS3 and 360 had there really is no comparison.
Anyone that says N64 was better clearly hasn’t played Final Fantasy VII, Suikoden I-II, Street Fighter Alpha 1-3, Breath of Fire III-IV, Tales of Destiny, Warcraft II, Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV, Arc the Lad, Diablo, Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Dragon Quest VII, Lunar, Tekken 1-3, Marvel vs Capcom and many more amazing titles for the PS1. No need to come at me with “but N64 had Mario 64, Zelda, 007 and Killer Instinct Gold”. Nope, none of those titles hold a candle to the first 10 games mentioned in my list. I’m sick of reading Nintendo fan boys saying the games for PS1 didn’t age well because saying Suikoden I and II, Tales of Destiny, Street Fighter Alpha 1-3 or pretty much any RPG (even the best game of all time, Final Fantasy VII aged wonderfully contrary to the moron opinions I’ve read all to many times) for the PS1 didn’t age well is equal to you saying “I’m on crack and I’m a retard” about yourself because clearly you are if that’s what you think. Suikoden I and Suikoden II are like buttons (something in no need of improvement). The same goes for Street Figher Alpha 1-3, as those games were beyond astonishing. Also, the looks of older style 2D RPGs are gorgeous and preferred over the newer style 3D RPGs in today’s standards (don’t get me wrong, I love today’s 3D RPGs, but there is something about 2D RPGs that are just mind boggling amazing). Also, PS1 clearly has the best controller between both consoles as spoken, but what wasn’t spoken about was the audio quality! I know I’m not the only one who agrees that music is literally half the game, and let me tell you, PS1 Games have some of the best music ever composed in the history of mankind. The dude from Watch Mojo mentioned “I know this seems like a cop out” and let me tell you, it really was a cop out. They didn’t want to stand up to all the N64 fanboys who can’t the see quality PS1 provided to where it actually won, but see, those of us who prefer PS1 over N64 (I love them both, but PS1 is just leagues ahead) don’t need confirmation from anyone to know PS1 is the winner. The sales spoke for themselves.. the PS1 out sold the N64 do to its library being so damn great.
Loved them both but wow man slow down. Yes Sony had the ultimate RPG selection. Same could be said for anything multi player on N64. These two consoles are a product of a divorce. Sony got all the step kids but Nintendo kept it's bloodline. Mario 64, Mario Kart, Zelda OoT/MM, Star Fox 64, Smash, Paper Mario, along Rares KI Gold, Blast Corps, Sin and Punishment, Donkey Kong, and Perfect Dark. Also the best wrestling games ever by THQ/Aki. Great Racers, Platformers, and Shooters like 007/Perfect Dark, Turok, Duke Nukem, Doom, Forsaken etc. Kanomi couldn't top there Sony stuff but Goemon, Castlevania, Hybrid Heaven were all still fun. Resident Evil 2 made it and was solid. Top games had sales the same as Sony, Sony sold faulty consoles for years too while N64 held up fine. Loved them both but it was no one was street. Sony had more games and had qaulity along with that. N64 still had 370 plus games, second best seller that era, bullet proof non faulty hardware, top games, many considered best from both consoles to this day.
Would go with PS1 games, hands down! Tekken 3 is the best fighter ever, MGS was the most mindblowing game at the time, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Soul Reaver, Siphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Castlevania, Spiderman, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Rayman - I could honestly keep going.
Kasper Schmidt i read all of these games and i saw just 1 title that gets my attention: thats crash, that i already have in the ps4. Ps1 has no uncharted and no God of war , no assassins creed, no call of duty...
I agree... wtf... n64 games just play smoother and look better. You obviously just preferred it because you owned it. I own both. N64 holds up much better today.
At the time I thought so too (despite zelda OoT being my favorite game) . The PlayStation just had a much bigger library of quality games. However looking at it today - there are still at least a dozen N64 games that are still fun and engaging. From the PSone lineup I probably would only touch FF9, Castlevania SoN and FF Tactics
Why is the Saturn not included here? When the PS1, Saturn, and N64 are considered, it gets more interesting. Of the three, the PS1 has the most well-rounded and diverse library, but in a strict genre breakdown, the Saturn and N64 would strangely win more genres than PS1. This is the only generation where all three consoles offered something truly unique and equally excellent. Throw in the PC and this is clearly the golden age of gaming.
The Saturn probably has the greatest library of 2D shmups, 2D fighters, and light gun games of any system ever released. Strategy, 2D platformers, racing, rail shooters, and general action games are also quite strong.
MarioKart 64, Mario 64, Golden Eye, Star Fox, Cruisin USA, Killer Instinct, Super Smash Bros, Fifa 98, 1080 Snowboarding, Rampage, Banjo Kazzooie......Man my childhood was awesome.
Right... But Sony only created the dual stick controller because of Nintendo's controller, so the real score should be the 64 winning 4-2. Sony had well over a year to come up with that layout, but they didn't think of it until the Nintendo came out.
Jaden Rosencrans thing is n64 wasnt the first to introduce a single thumbstick to the controller, whereas sony really set the standard in controller layout still used today. Plus the first party n64 controller was absolutely terrible in layout. I prefer to use my hori pad mini whenever i boot of the n64.
Innovation is not invention. Sony didn’t need to invent or come up with the idea to make it better, they just had two analog sticks (one for movement, the other for camera) and had waaaay better placement on the controller. They also made them soft so people wouldn’t injure themselves... you know, like they did in that class action lawsuit filed by people injured playing mario party lol.
No losers in this battle. We all were winners back then. Miss the old gaming days.
Cant agree more! such a unique era in gaming..
Indeed. Both are relevant in my humble opinion.
Maaaaybe except for the Saturn. RIP tho it had some really good and underrated games
@@zotaro557 yeah

Stupid console wars! The PlayStation and N64 were both winners. During no other generation was there such a diverse and awesome take on gaming by two very different companies, with boat loads of great games on both sides. Lots of pride in this generation.
actually i would argue that also happened during the sixth generation, it just ended during the seventh generation for some reason.
+Phantom1op Your correct. Same with 4th,3rd and every other gen but the 7th, and now the 8th
+Phantom1op But during this 5th gen was an explosion of all types of games, mostly from the PS side along with Nintendo's well known properties. The Saturn's early demise probably was a huge factor as well. Otherwise the Saturn would've shared games with PS, I theorize.
White Knight 5
maybe, but we have to admit that at least it is still remembered by Sega's fans unlike the Jaguar (which is sad because i actually kind of like the Jaguar) which is only really remembered because of the AVGN review.
This is true and the N64 had the 64DD
+Samuel Coe That's exactly what I thought watching it... Hell, Sony copied the joystick & rumble features after that lmao like they always do.
+Nintendo64_Lover but did it last? nope.
+GameDjeenie
And then Microsoft copied Sonys controller design with their Xbox 360. It goes round and round.
finsfan90 All companies inspire each other (Sony's Eye toy came out years before the Wii/360 Kinect), which is fine. But you can't claim 'innovation' if you've basically done something another company has already done
I can definitly agree with the result, I have both PS1 and N64, and I like them both a lot!
You have lost and recieved your life privellege

The only problem with the N64 lineup, is outside of Nintendo and Rareware, there are very few games worth playing.
that's true how ever thier is a lot of games by nintendo and rare alone.
Exactly. They had great games, but it doesn't compare to the PSX's library
+Chris Sukam like it's said in the video. the games where made for different tastes. in the categories they aimed for they beat each other in.
I had them both because fuck competition

Everything Nintendo after the GameCube was different from its competitors.
I know I'm late but I mean come on dude Nintendo since the Wii has tried to be different like look at the Switch it's so different from the other consoles it's why it sells so well

Resident Evil was not a Sony Exclusive it was also released on the Sega Saturn!
A year or 2 after the initial release. Just like RE4 was initially an exclusive for GC, that didn't last long, but they were exclusive to begin with.
+moviemetalhead //Like GTA: San andreas.
+Mann Holloway So, you're saying it was exclusive then? Or is the Saturn not just a myth lol.
+randumo24 actually the Saturn was a great system, it was best at Capcom 2D fighters. I used play my neighbor everyday with all the Capcom Saturn ports and they where head and shoulders better than the Sony versions.
Mann Holloway //You're jokin' right?
@@robertsrt Cartridge storage did limit the N64, but be it as it may it was still the more powerful console at the time.
+RedWolf316
I'm pretty sure N64 was more powerful than both.
+RedWolf316 PS1 is much better than the N64.
+RedWolf316 Yeah you can say that.
+RedWolf316 Nintendo also stuck with cartridges because it was a lot harder to pirate.
+CAX 117 powerful doest mean better games. Same as 3ds and vita. By the look of it, nintendo will create a powerfull game using the NX but i think ps4 and xbone will remain.
N64 all day long, no contest. Goldeneye, star wars racer, rogue squadron, jet force Gemini... And that game changing controller. Ahhh, the memories.
yep forgot about jet force gemini
+triforce1980 what an awesome game, I didn't want my comment to be too long but I could have continued all day listing off great games on the N64. Wave race, body harvest, perfect dark, starfox, pilot wings etc etc. I have such good memories of it.
What if your "memories" are with playstation? Calling it no contest is bullshit and you know it.
+bowser515 N64 had WWF No Mercy, that owns every PS1 game.
+Seank7 don't get grumpy on the Internet, you're welcome to enjoy your own memories. It is my opinion that the N64 was far superior.
Both systems are awesome.
I think that ps1 was a big improvement over N64
@@sonicman9910 Besides using discs which provide more storage the PS1 was inferior in all technical ways to the N64. The N64 was released 2 years after the PS1 so it was in fact the stronger console.
Abner Winter imagine how freaking insane the n64 would have been if it used ps1 style disks
@@kuromifan10 Yup, we would have seen FF7 on N64 and more 3rd party games. Nintendo went for the cartridge thing in order to avoid piracy, but we know how that went :/ .
@movie madness Yup, it was.
That's cool, to each their own.
I like Nintendo's consoles better but I perfer the PS1 over the N64 because of RPG library
perkoff Bits don't mean better games. You pick which one you like because of the games on it
***** The PS1 does that shaky thing because the PS1 builds its game graphics using a thing called Integer-Based Arithmetic meaning not every 3D graphic angle could be made so to make up for it, it would "shake".
N64 will be my fav but to each their own :)
I'm on the N64 side of things because honestly, the games have aged a lot better. The PS1 is a great system but it aged poorly.
+ivanthelovehammer barely few games had aged well on either system
N64
Ocarina of Time
Star Fox 64
PS1
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro The Dragon
pretty much every other game on either system didn't age well, GoldenEye, Metal Gear Solid, Donkey Kong 64, Tomb Raider, etc
+ACACE10 Mario 64 still looks fine like a cartoon, at least if Spyro does.
+ivanthelovehammer Yeah, those old Mario games sure are still relevant after being recreated on an annual basis.

@Risen General What about "Star Fox 64", "007 - Goldeneye" and "Star Wars" exclusive games?
@Risen General The case about GoldenEye is the fact that it was one of the first FPS on consoles. GoldenEye was very important, on this case, for console industry, to help to take this kind of games from PCs to consoles.
And the fun about this game is the four players mode. One of the best memories from my childhood, about videogames, is playing "007 - GoldenEye" with four friends, everyone trying to stole the golden gun from the others. Nostalgic!
@Risen General (Hi! Sorry to response too late. I was busy by these days).

THIS!
I will forever question why fanboys debate on what's better and what not. Why not just enjoy what you enjoy and have fun instead?
Smash Bros. is actually my favorite fighting game series. I have all of them, except for the 3DS port of SSB4.
Nintendo should've stuck to the numbering system of the N64, calling their next console N65 and so on. By today their newest console would be called the Nintendo 69.

the next one would have been something like N128 or something like t hat

N64 games are still holding up alot better in the mid to late 2010s over ps1 one games, the games were fewer on n64 but way way better, and critically acclaimed and again n64s games just play and look better in 1996 and even 2018 over ps1, n64 is winner in my option, even if it had a M shaped controller and no Cds

How is it overrated? That's a pretty retarded thing to say. The PS2 deserved its praise and it's the most sold console ever.
Also, the N64 is not the best. The PSX has better games and a better controller.

Okay.
Resident Evil wasn't PlayStation exclusive, it was also released on Sega Saturn.
But to be fair... The Gamecube got it
I would have disagreed based on Ocarina of Time being one of my number one games of all time. But... It was included on the Gamecube version of The Wind Waker making the Gamecube the console that I actually played it all the way through on. We also had Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin on GC so... you do have point.

Yeah but the PS1 had hundreds of games more, had cheaper games, better audio for its time, you get the point.
i remember being taken to the store to buy a ps1 when i was 7 years old. its 1 of the best memories ever . i got resident evil 2 and the tryhard worker tried to talk my dad out of it lmao. called my best friend over and we played ps1 the entire night and didnt go to sleep until 6am haha..then christmas came around and my mom got me and my bro a n64 cuz hes a couple years younger than me and she wanted us to have more kid friendly games but 007 was one of the games we got 1st🤣🤣👍👍.

+Ronin Jeremy Yeah, bought my playstation myself. Even though I was in jr high I saved up with odd jobs and christmas/birthday money. I picked the ps1 because of doom 2 and the cd factor.
Nice, yeah a friend of mine had his parents buy it for him, and after playing FF7 i knew i had to go out and buy it.

Wow, N64 wins the exclusives category? That's a load of bullshit. I love Nintendo to death but I definitelt jumped ship during the 5th generation.
Eɴᴅ ᴍᴇ yeah, but at least you don't have to wait long loading times. And carts last longer too.
Wouldn't it have been possible for them to make a system that used multiple cartridges at the same time? That would have been smart. Even the game cases could have been designed so that they didn't take up so much space.
The Metroid i know but u lost them fast
Cartridges last longer, CDs were better at the time. Every 64 game i have works, I'm sure there's a lot of ps1 games that don't work anymore.
PS1 is a clear winner in my heart because that was my first gaming system that is high tech and innovative at the time. Oh I miss my childhood, playing FF7, FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, Resident evil 2-3 and many more.... Thanks Sony!
Back in the day I had a PS1, but looking back I wish I also had a N64
Looking back I wish I had an N64 INSTEAD of the PS1. The N64 seems like a way better console.
You had the better console

+Constantinos Michael So does my ps1. Except Sony was smart enough to make the ps1 games playable on their future consoles.
+randumo24 Backwards compatibility on the PS3 almost destroyed the PlayStation franchise. The system sold terribly because of how overpriced it was, and that was with Sony taking a $300 loss on each console. Taking backwards compatibility away saved PlayStation.

To this day I’m still confused as to why people refer to the Playstation as PSX, which was a completely different console altogether!

Maximillion Roivas wow, so... does your ps controller rumble? That's what I fucking thought!

N64 had a much better exclusive lineup, and much better hardware.
All the PS1 had going for it as a console was the use of discs (although that came with it looong load times, so its not even much of an advantage).. and it was the first to have dual analogs, but they really stole the analog stick from Nintendo so.. :P

TheDuckClock Nope
Stefan Petrovic Well lets just say it negates your argument.
PS1 was chipped easy, compared to ps2
in older versions you could switch a orignal game to the pirated and you could play the pirated without the special chip, not 100% working and in later ps1 bios you really wanted the chip.
Nintendo lost the battle because of piracy, the N64DD should be better or the N64 from the start.

Honestly I found games like Abe’s Odyssey far more entertaining than Zelda.
*Saturn: Alright ur not allowed to have Sonic on this channel anymore*
Would go with PS1 games, hands down! Tekken 3 is the best fighter ever, MGS was the most mindblowing game at the time, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Soul Reaver, Siphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Castlevania, Spiderman, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Rayman - I could honestly keep going.
Kasper Schmidt i read all of these games and i saw just 1 title that gets my attention: thats crash, that i already have in the ps4.
Ps1 has no uncharted and no God of war , no assassins creed, no call of duty...
i believe Mortal Kombat is better than tekken
I agree... wtf... n64 games just play smoother and look better.
Because the Saturn was a piece of shit.
@@dannybodros5180 you've never even used a Saturn
@@fallingdownholes I did and I stand by my statement. There's a reason the Saturn died and that's because it was a class A piece of shit.
Nintendo is legendary!
Playstation, a close second place.
The best comment I've ever seen
N64 is shit, Saturn is best to the n64.
Fernando henrique liar!
N64 is best consle ever
cuz it was easy to copy games
Has to be PS1 in terms of its impact on the industry for this specific generation.
Sega Saturn: Am I a joke to you?
Consumers: Yes
Sega Saturn in hindsight is the best of the three because of the plethora of 2d games
Well, the Saturn didn't have a real Sonic game. Without Sonic, why get that Sega console?
@@soupcannon6789 Never played Nights? :)
