Although I love the GameCube I actually do think the Wii is better. Why? Because there are so many unique underrated gems on the Wii. These games are of course hidden among the see of crappy Shuffleware, but it's the coolest thing to find such amazing gems while looking through some of the crap games.
im heavily biased with Ps1 being the best as it was my first console, plus i loved/still love and own/play my original tomb raiders 1-5, spyro 1-3, resident evil 1-3, dino crisis, rayman 1-2, parasite eves and so much more love it
@@fireheartgames That; and the WII (or Revolution as originally named) not only could play all Gamecube titles... but N64 as well! (required a special connector for the cartridges that wasn't widely marketed, but still really impressive)
For those wondering, the take where I get slapped was attempted nearly 20 times until I could do it without flinching too soon. If you're thinking that must've hurt, it was nothing compared to how painful it was for my wife to slap me against her desire. But she powered through it. That's what I call true love folks :)
Wait! What?!! You have a wife?? Looking forward to seeing her on the channel.. 🎶 "She's the Retro Bird Gal.. And she hates talkin about video games.." 🎵👍🏻😂
I think the problem with the Saturn is all of the hardware blundering Sega did before it (32x, CD). If they went from Genesis to Saturn and really made it a destination for their developers (and marketed the crap out of it like they did the Dreamcast), they might still be making new consoles today.
I've always gotten the impression they might've just tried too hard by having their eggs in so many different baskets. People point to the disagreement between Sega of Japan and Sega of America a lot too.
Not just their previous hardware blunders but the Saturn's hardware blunder as well. Sega's arcade division had embraced 3D, but their home division was so short sighted that they wanted to stick with 2D on the Saturn until they got spooked by the PlayStation's 3D capabilities.
I think the sega CD in specific undermined the Saturn. Releasing the two disc based Sega systems 2 years apart, very few people would be enticed to buy a second cd based console from the same brand. Then the Dreamcast came 4 years later and people were just over Sega. Too many systems in rapid succession with not enough life in each.
@@blitheringrando1410 The Sega CD was fine. It gave developers a chance to practice with the new medium, and get past a lot of growing pains. Not as fine: Sega of Japan refusing to give developers the Sega CD specs, because they were paranoid about Nintendo copying them or showing them up. The end result was one of the most disappointing console launches of all time, and a library that rarely took advantage of all it offered.
The Saturn has some great hidden gems. The Nintendo 64 has some of my all time favourite games. But damn the Playstation 1 is just top tier with some of the best variety I've seen in a console.
I grew up with the PS1, my neighbor who I became great friends with had the N64. We would traded systems often enough and actually bought each other games that were actually for ourselves when we traded. My dad's step son (parents split when i was 1) had the Saturn so I got to play that every now and again with step bro. He eventually gave it to me as a birthday gift when we were mich older. One of my favorite gifts
I really love the N64, and it's my favorite system due to Nostalgia, but wow does the Saturn really kick some butt! Been enjoying quite a few Saturn Games recently and it really is an underrated system.
The worst thing I can say about the Sega Saturn is that I haven't experienced it's library yet. I happened upon one and now I'm saving up for an ODE. I'll get to it some day.
@@apexanomaly maybe not over modern, or even $4000 PCs in 1997. But Saturn had things other consoles and most PCs didn’t - dynamic lighting, a true 3D engine, online play, no censorship and special play modes.
Imagine if the 32X was never released, the Saturn was backwards compatible with Genesis games and they didn’t rush its release date. This war would’ve been VERY interesting and perhaps Sega would still be part of the war today.
As a gamer I was happy that I was an adult when the PS1 came out! It was like playing video games for the 1st time all over again! With that said my roommate who is a SEGA fan for life didn't even know about the SATURN. Heck Saturn is my favorite planet & if I would have known about it I might have gotten one just because it was named, The Sega Saturn. My buddy did get a Dreamcast in 1998, but to this day I don't think I've played one game on the Saturn. Nights into Dreams is the only game that I played, but on a different console.
I love this channel. You managed to concisely cover all the main points in 13 minutes as well as the feelings about these consoles. For me I enjoyed the N64 the least, but always appreciated how they focused on 4 player gaming out of the box. It always looked like an advanced party machine. While I owned both Saturn and PS1, I loved the Saturn more because of its powerhouse 2D amd Japanese exclusives games (which were alot). During this era of gaming; I always found the 3d games to be rough and ugly looking, even at the time; with the exception of the all time greats. The PS1 3d games looked better than the competition, but even then it wasn't saying much and there were so much more 3d games than 2d on ps1 and N64. The Saturn excelled greatly in 2D games and for a time they did get good ports of the popular 3D games; which while not as good as the PS1 versions; they were much better than PS1 ports of 2D games (Resident Evil Saturn port was better than the PS1 Xmen vs Street Fighter port). If the Saturn didn't end sooner than the PS1 and had the same support in the US as it did in Japan; history might have ended up remembering it as being the better console and we may have been trying to get Sega Saturn 5s in 2021 instead of PS5s.
I only recently found Mr Bird here and I just cant express how much I love finding a new face talking about the same old games Seriously I am loving catching up on all the content
I had all three of these systems! PSX had Parappa, Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy, etc.. N64 had Mario 64, Pilotwings, Goldeneye, etc... Saturn had Nights, Virtua Cop, Capcom fighters (plus perfect controller)... THEY'RE ALL GREAT! I liked my Saturn the most though.
Having grown up with the NES and Genesis, the N64 was a revolution. It's multi-player approach to gaming made me realize that gaming is a social activty. After all those years of playing single-player games (or even two-player games played solo) in a dank, dark basement, the N64 taught me that gaming could bring people together rather than keep them apart.
In terms of graphics, processing-power, controller-versatility, and launch-dates, I'd say that the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation 1 are perfectly comparable for each other's advantages & disadvantages, as well as which third-party games can be mutually designed for both platforms properly! The Nintendo 64, on the other hand... also evolved technology with newly possible 3D Graphics for video-games (while being limited to using numerous 2D pixelated sprites), except in a significantly very different approaching way than the other two (aforementioned) consoles.
Nintendo used to punish companies for making games for it's competitors. That's why I'm happy that Capcom , Konami etc. Let them high and dry. Nintendo still hasn't fully recovered from that blow.
I grew up with all three. Saturn was my favorite because of games like dragon force and shining the holy ark. Metal Gear was special to me and Star Fox 64 looked especially amazing to me at the time. I didn't notice segas struggles really since I couldn't ever really afford more than maybe 15 games a console in those days. I think this is the story for most kids. I never met anyone in those days with extensive collections like you see older gamers with these days. So It didn't really matter at the time that the other systems had more games as long as each had 20 really good games. Which I think is true of all three!
Even nowadays! People say the PlayStation is better because it has more games, but I've never met anyone with more PS1 games than any other console. If you had 50 or so good games on either console it wouldn't matter.
The PS1 was king, even though I bought it and sold it without realizing it, and rediscovered it via the PS2. And Einhander was the reason I still own PS1 discs. RType Delta is another GOAT. Having said that, there was something magical about the Saturn. All those wicked shmups and 2D graphics. Still want one. Great show as usual. Had me in LOLz.
I could waffle on in a long and boring paragraph about why I see the PS1 to be the clear winner, and not just here but in literally any console comparison anyone can think up. Sony really did change the world.
I think this video represents what i like best about your videos; it's really refreshing to hear a positive, moderating voice on TH-cam at all, especially in the video game community.
The Saturn has some beautiful 2D games but damn the games are expensive. I think people were skeptical about Sony entering the market and figured it was going to be another system that didn't last like the CDi or 3DO. It is however the true successor to the Super Nintendo IMO. The N64 has great first party titles but that's about it. It's biggest downfall was sticking to cartridges and lack of third party support. Considering those were the early days of 3D gaming, each system did something right.
It's ironic that one of the disadvantages to the Saturn now is that many of the games are expensive. In the mid to late 90's, cheap games were the best part of the Saturn. When Sega was giving up on the Saturn to go to the Dreamcast, you could go into an electronics store and buy an entire section of Saturn games for pennies on the dollar. Were the Saturn games worse than the Playstation or N64 games? Sometimes yes, and sometimes no, but when the game only cost you a couple of bucks to buy then who really cared?
I hear this all the time and I had the exact same experience, so it's mind boggling to me. I swear, absolutely EVERYONE had N64 when I was in middle school. EVERYONE. The kids I liked, the kids I didn't like, my neighbors, my cousins, my bullies, my crushes, the nerds, the preppy popular kids, the annoying kid down the street LOL.
Maybe in the US. In Europe N64 basically didn't exist. It was Playstation all day everyday. It was so popular that many EU countries don't use the term "Video Game console" they say "Playstation". Similar to what Nintendo did with NES in the US. And that is THE difference between N64 and Ps1 popularity. PS1 was everywhere while entire countries never heard about N64
@@budal15 Yes this probably explains why I am so confused as well. I knew many people had both but most of the kids I knew bought N64 first and some would get a PS. I only knew of two who had a Playstation and no N64. No one in my town had a Saturn. The first I played Saturn outside of a Kiosk was post Dreamcast.
@@AxiomofDiscord There was no Saturn where I was around either. Some Mega Drive clones and later on Dreamcast was featured in magazines along Sonic Adventure. And then the sudden news that it died but Sega will live on and bring it's games to all devices. Turned out to be the case
Thank you. It's a Sony Trinitron Wega. They're actually fairly common if you're able to spot one on FB marketplace, Craig's List or even just out on somebody's curb. I got mine off somebody's lawn about four years ago.
For me personally my most favorite console from that generation is the saturn & my least favorite is the N64 because of the significant lack of Jrpgs & 2D fighting games on the console. Like everyone else I like the Nintendo/Rareware games on the console but I really enjoy the old school FPS on the console along with some awesome star wars games from Lucas Arts/ Factor 5.
@@SoupyMittens Cool nothing wrong with that. The other night I was playing Star Wars Rogue Squadron on the N64. Very impressive game graphically on the system.
As an RPG fan, all 3 consoles are amazing: N64 has Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 (timeless titles), Ogre Battle 64 and Custom Robo. PS1 has Digimon World 1 & 3 (also timeless titles), Legend of Mana and YuGiOh Forbidden Memories. Saturn only has Panzer Dragoon saga, but said title is a masterpiece (eagerly waiting for a remake).
Here is the thing, I had a PSX, I bought cause there were some games I wanted to play on it, then I saw some of the games that were being promoted for the 64, like Mario 64, Mario Kart, Castlevania and Zelda, so I was like oh i need to get a 64 too to play those games, and the there is the Saturn, there werent really games that were heavily promoted that made me say, oh i wanna get that, unlike the Genesis where I saw Sonic, Streets of Rage, Splatterhouse, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Mickey Mouse, Blaster Master, that made get a Sega Genesis. I mean Saturn had good games, but they were also available for the PSX, so there was no need for me to get one. I mean, I mean they should've had a strong Sonic game at launch, and some new games of the other games I mentioned that were popular here in the U.S. the only one was Shinobi which looked awesome.
Of all channels on TH-cam I have never found one who has spoken so many truths about gaming. I love your videos man. You make some great content. Keep it up!
@@RetroBirdGaming Every time I have watched one of your videos, you have said something that was true and funny at the same time. Every time I have laughed with something. You are awesome. I liked the comment about how easy it is for four adults to play together. Oh man, it is the bane of adult gamers. Be safe and keep those videos coming! :)
The Sega Saturn seems to be ahead of its times in terms of raw power but because of the way it's designed was a lot harder for people to program for, which is kind of funny because it had to do if it's dual CPU layout and nowadays pretty much everything is designed for multi-core processors.
I loved this generation so much. You could look at a game for a second and know which system it was on just by the visuals. All 3 had their own strengths and weaknesses which made for incredibly different games.
I prefer the PS1 and Saturn over N64 any day. But I cannot lie that the N64 had Star Power behind it's line of games. Super Mario (& Kart) 64, Star Fox 64, OoT, Pokemon Stadium, F-Zero X, Paper Mario, Mario Party, Kirby 64, and the list goes on.
I think you’re right in your assessment of multiplayer capabilities on N64 vs. PS1. I was 18 when I had both N64 and PS1. I found myself playing single player games more on the PlayStation, and multiplayer games (such as Goldeneye and Mario Kart), more on the Nintendo 64. And overall, the Nintendo 64 just had a different vibe. As you’ve said, the PlayStation had more mature games, while the N64 had fun games that appealed to kids. The multiplayer strengths of the N64 may have also contributed to its lower sales. When you only need one console per four people…
As a kid I played a lot of Saturn and sometimes N64&PS1 at my friends. Today I only play and collect for Saturn, mostly 2D Games. From a todays standpoint I feel the 2D Games have aged pretty well...same goes for the gameplay :) Anyway, the least console that I like is the N64.
The Saturn's US experience at the time was miserable, but coming into the library later with Japanese imports it's my favorite of the three (or however many you want to include in this generation since the 3DO and arguably the Jaguar and Dreamcast also fall into it). I've always had a thing for 2D games so it fits like a glove. The N64 is the one I had as a child but I find it's the one that holds up the worst. It definitely has the most unique identity of the three though. So many entirely unique games and I love several of them like Starfox 64, Majora's Mask, and Diddy Kong Racing quite dearly. The PS1 just has a much better balance though. While the Gamecube had a few genres it struggled with the N64 leaves you with merely one or two options if you want to play a SHMUP, RPG, or 2D platformer. On the whole though I'd say this generation and the one before it are the two gens where the three major console among the gen are all worth owning even if you're just a casual retro gamer. They all offer an experience that feels very distinct from the competition instead of just a different flavor, which often happens with at least two consoles in other generations. Like, if you own a 360 there's really not too much different about the PS3 outside of its handful of exclusives and vice versa. They feel like chocolate and vanilla ice cream instead of one side being ice cream and the other being pie.
You make some epic content and as a true gamer who grew up in the 90's I agree with all of your points. It was an amazing time to be alive and I'm so grateful to have been there for it and still am here today!
Think you nailed it with the comment about it depending on your childhood. I didn’t have any (pc was my thing) but my friends had PS1 and N64 so they are the default. But I was sucked in to Saturn’s marketing and coveted it hard. If it wasn’t so expensive in UK it was the one I wanted at the time. Now I’ve got all 3 the main thing stopping every playing my Saturn (other than children to keep alive) is fear of burning out the laser. Also for what it’s worth, I think the n64 controller is awesome. It just worked so well for golden eye. Playing stuff on emulation today just doesn’t quite get that across
I believe the saturns laser was actually very high quality - tbh, the whole system had a really solid build, so id say dw about it - if you wanna play it, that's what matters
I’ve been always amazed at how little “fun” weighed in people’s opinion on deciding which console was the best. Yes ps1 had the bigger library, Yes ps1 had the bigger file games, Yes ps1 had the better graphics, I don’t agree but I can see why Yes the n64 the weirder controller, Yes the ps1 sold a ton… BUT whoever grew up with both consoles (I did), always pick the N64 as the superior console. It was just MORE FUN. The 1st party games, the focus on multiplayer, the lack of loading times, the 6 front buttons, the analog stick, the in cartridge memory of most games, the different colours of games, consoles and controllers and so on… The n64 focused on friendship, happiness… childish stuff. Fun stuff nonetheless.
When I was a kid, everyone I knew had an N64, I didn't even knew sony was a thing until the ps2, but at the time I didn't have cable or internet maybe that played a part in it. I often found out about games by seeing them in stores every couple of months.
Dang it was the opposite for me. It just goes the show that sales don't tell the whole story. I knew a lot of people who had Gamecubes, but I was shocked it sold so bad. I hardly knew any kids with original Xbox's.
I definitely relate to your Nintendo 64 story as well. Everyone I knew in my neighborhood had one. I wasn't really aware of the lack of games for the system because I was so busy buying, borrowing and trading game cartridges. I've no doubt that the PS1 and Saturn offered awesome solo gaming experiences but the N64 was a real party machine.
I was a big PS1 fan in the late 90's, and then I came home with a Goldeneye N64 console bundle and a £10 second hand Super Mario 64 cart and I was blown away.
I’ve been binge watching your content since receiving some terrible news and this channel has been a wonderful distraction. Love the humor. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber.
The SNES cultivated my love of JRPGs and then the N64 gave me... Quest 64. Ugh. Meanwhile I'd go over to the friend's house and he'd have Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Breath of Fire 3... the PS One was an RPG machine. I'd go home and grumble at my N64. Didn't get a PS1 until years later. I wish I knew more about the Saturn, it just totally flew under my radar!
I was really fortunate as a child, I had an N64 and oddly/randomly a Sega Saturn as well. I say oddly because I didn't even ask for it or knew it existed when I got it, it was a truly random Christmas gift from my parents one year. At the same time, my step sister had a PS1 which she would bring over once in a while and we'd play multiplayer on Legend of Mana together, and I absolutely loved it. I remember really enjoying all three consoles, though I must say I think I favored the N64 just slightly over the Saturn- it had such classic IP's with truly revolutionary games that I just couldn't put down. Don't get me wrong, the Saturn was excellent as well, it came with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA, which were all slam dunks in their own right and I played the heck out of.
I missed out on owning an N64, although played some Goldeneye with friends, but having plenty of the games come to Switch has more than filled that void for me. I have an Import Japanese Saturn, although I barely play it, so for me, the best is PSone, yes, the little one, with the attached LCD screen !!! it's so fun :-)
I grew up on and adore the N64. My experience with PS1 and Saturn is almost zero. I'd love to experience both of them, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with PlayStation. As much as the Saturn intrigues me, I'm just not into fighting games or shooters so not sure what I'd be in for otherwise.
There's quite a few arcade releases that are fun to play, Sega Rally, Daytona USA and such. Then there's games like Panzer Dragoon, and if you get an import cart you can get a lot of expensive games cheap from Japan. I decided to play Panzer Dragoon Saga with the Japanese version, just looking up all the cutscenes on TH-cam so I knew what to do haha
As someone who had a decent N64 collection growing up...yeah, I can tell you that the system has way more than just the small handful of most notable games. There's a lot of good stuff on there. As for a favorite...well it would have to be between N64 and PS1 for me as I've never had or played a Saturn (never had any Sega consoles actually). But how can I choose between them? They're both so good!
I had all 3 consoles back in the day, and they all had great games but I played my PlayStation the most. The variety was just insane. Lightgun shooters with the GunCon, many many racing games like Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Rally de Africa, Gran Turismo etc. Platform games, RPGs, shoot em ups. And sports games like NFL Blitz, International Track and Field, FIFA 2000, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater etc. Favorite games for each: Guardian Heroes (Saturn) GoldenEye (N64) Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS1)
Saturn #1 to me personally. Hard choice between the other two but if I had to choose one of them I guess id have to go with playstation but I do like certain gems on the 64. Fzero noticeably.
I think the reason why the PS1 controller looked like the old Nintendo controller is probably because Nintendo and Sony were actually working on a console together which that console exist but I don't think it had any games. Before they released the console, Sony decided to just do there own thing. If I remember correctly, the N64 was going to involve discs but Sony used them instead.
One year my parents house got randomly toilet papered during the homecoming of the school district they live in. They also live in the middle nowhere in that district. Hahahah they never found out who did it. I think it's awesome. I was like 22, and my parents had zero connection to the schools. Hahahah loved it.
Such fond memories of getting the PS1 when I was 5 in the 90's. Then around 2005 exchanging some pokémon cards for a Sega Saturn. But this day I still want to own a Nintendo 64 and I will get one I hope ! (Just bought an RTX 3070 but still want the 64)
This is my favorite generation of gaming. It really feels like the last time that all 3 consoles were truly unique and appealing to different markets- the Saturn continuing the old guard 2D and arcade-style action but on steroids, the PS1 providing more narrative-driven single player experiences with a lot of pre-rendered backgrounds, and the N64 providing the multiplayer focused, cutting edge fully 3D games. Ever since the 6th gen, all the systems have been very good, but they all provide fundamentally the same types of games and experiences.
I always wonder how many of the PS1 console sales were people re-buying due to broken systems. We had 1 N64 that lasted me throughout the generation. We ended up buying 4 PS1s over its lifespan I think. Heck, we were on our 2nd PS1 before the N64 even released over here!
I will say that PS1's did not last, like at all lol. Me, my dad, my two uncles, and my aunt had like 5 in rotation that died. We were able to keep 3 fixed up but man did they have problems, especially with the disc tray and cables. Never had an N64 but I would have fucking loved it as a kid, had all the kind of games that I really like to play. Playing them now is so cool.
these discussion videos are honestly the best from your channel retrobird! have never had the $$ to play saturn before, couldnt even tell you what it looks like in the wild! my bro had the N64 which wowed me way more than the PS1, though i had to credit that console when i did get it a few years later for really getting me into RPGs in a huge way
The console I like the least is the Sega Saturn. Only reason is because I have never owned or played one before. One think I like about it is that it has some cool JRPGs/RPGs that I wish I could play. Maybe one day.
N64 may not have had the most games. But it had the BEST games. And they were the best games by quite an enormous margin. Best couch multiplayer of any generation also.
Saturn is my least favourite of the 3: Thing I liked about it: It had some cool designs (grey and white). I would’ve liked to have played some of the Japanese exclusives too.
I've often had the same thoughts about the N64 being outsold by the PS1. Growing up, I knew so many people who owned an N64 but maybe only 2 people who owned Playstations.
Totally my experience growing up. I was often (lovingly) made fun of for not owning a Nintendo 64. I grew very jealous of their 4 player games until Sony began pumping out rpg masterpieces like FF Tactics and Chrono Cross. Being surrounded by N64 owners wasn’t an issue after that 😁 at least not for single player
Same here. I knew more people that had a N64 than a PS1. I was very surprised to learn years later that the PS1 outsold the N64 by so much. It definitely did not feel like the PS1 was so much more popular than the N64 back then.
I’ll just say something I like about all the consoles. Saturn: While I don’t even have a Saturn, I do appreciate how it did a lot of impressive looking 2D games despite 3D being the hot stuff at the time. Astal in particular looks beautiful and I hope I get to play it some day. PS1: I like how it basically standardized modern controller design. Kinda. Prongs for the bottom, two shoulder buttons on each side, and later, two analog sticks. Not that there haven’t been great advancements in controllers since, but it definitely lead the pack. N64: I like the sense of experimentation Nintendo had with this console. Of course standardizing analog sticks, but also it’s emphasis on multiplayer and certain peripherals. Especially the GameBoy Pak. It feels especially novel to use that with Pokémon Stadium and Mario Tennis. I didn’t grow up with this console, but using those features felt exciting and like a whole new world to me when I did experience them.
Astal sucked. I bought it new. The cherry on the side is that it didn't even have an end label on the case. It's in a damn longbox plastic Saturn case with a blank white spine. Come on, Ass-tal. Graphics looked pretty cool but it was boring. Play it on an emulator. Is that expensive now? I still have my blank spine copy somewhere.
I’ve been playing 4 player on the N64 since I got my original one in 2002. (I was 5) I still get my brothers and childhood friends to come over and play Mario Kart and DK64 multiplayer every now and then. Nothing can top it for me!
I REALLY want Sega to create a Mini Saturn. Not because of nostalgia, but quite the opposite: I've NEVER EVER in my life have TOUCHED a Saturn and I'm incredibly curious to see what it offers.
The N64 is my favorite because it was the ultimate party machine. Many of my favorite gaming memories come from playing its awesome 4 player multiplayer games like Goldeneye 007, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party, Dr. Mario 64, Smash Bros, No Mercy, and so many more with friends after school. Whenever I see somebody that doesn't love the N64, I know that they unfortunately didn't grow up getting to experience the fun of playing the N64's multiplayer with friends otherwise they would have surely loved it. I loved the PS1 as well and it complemented the N64 well. For any genre of games that was lacking on the N64, the PS1 would fill in the gap. I did not even know that the Sega Saturn existed back during that time. I had a Genesis that I loved, but then I thought that Sega just left the gaming market until the Dreamcast came out. I did not find out that the Saturn was a thing until Sega had left the console making business. I'm trying to get into now, but I have no nostalgia for it and the genres of games that it is strong in like shmups and fighting games are not the type of games that really appeal to me.
We were a Sega household growing up, so my oldest brother pushed my mom to get the Sega Saturn first after getting the 32X the year before. I had a blast playing it. The fighting games were unmatched and I played games like Virtua Cop for hours with my brothers. My older brother was also really into RPGs so I was able to enjoy fantastic games like Dragon Force. But then my friend showed me Final Fantasy VII and I knew PlayStation was the console I wanted, and later saved to get for myself. I didn't own an N64 until many years later, but I remember borrowing my cousin's to play GoldenEye and Duke Nukem 64, which were great. I like all three, but I'd say my favorite was definitely the PlayStation because it just had the best variety of games overall. N64 would be my least favorite of the bunch, and it's really only because, like many, I dislike the controller, but you'd forget about it once you played any of the games because the quality was just aces. Great video, dude! I love your style of comedy.
You relating how it felt like everyone you knew had an N64 despite it having lackluster sales is how it was with me with the GameCube. Everyone I hung out with, save for 1 PS2 guy, had a GameCube. It wouldn't be until years later that I realized how odd that really was.. can't say I was upset about it though!
Me TOO!!!! my neighbor, my friends, everyone i basically knew all had a Nintendo 64 and that was the only console we had. I had a friend who's family had three Nintendo 64's all in separate rooms
It's a tough one but I'd go with the n64 because of the soft graphics and the nice feel to the controller. And my least favorite would be the Sega Saturn because it doesn't stand out as much, still love it tho.
Final Fantasy VII was basically one of the reasons I wanted a Playstation in the first place. Also one of the commercials is how I knew about the Franchise at the time. My only clue of what Final Fantasy is like was in Super Mario RPG with a Boss called Culex which has the FFIV Boss Theme and the first time ever hearing the trademark Victory Fanfare. At the time I had to choose between the original Playstation and Nintendo 64. If I chose Nintendo 64, I would have played Super Mario 64, but if I chose Playstation, I would have played Final Fantasy VII. In the end, me and my brothers went with Playstation. Because of that, I've been a Fan of Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Tekken, Ehrgeiz, Bushido Blade and Alone In The Dark. Also Symphony Of The Night is how I know about the Castlevania Series. I have that Version of Resident Evil 2 since the beginning. (8:00) And when I first saw the Nintendo 64 Controller, I was confused why it had three Hand Grips at the time. The Gamecube Controller Design was a step up compared to Nintendo 64's.
The main "problem" with N64 is the crazy controller and the game library. There ARE a few nuggets for N64 but that's not enough. It could have been better with a more normal controller and more AAA games. The console itself was really great and and I love the introduction of 4 ports for controllers. The 2D to 3D transition was not fun. Too much 3D focus with bad looking 3D and no AAA 2D games on N64. But this generation was important for the long-term 3D evolution. Great video as always!!
The main reason for the strangeness of the N64 controller if I recall was that it was designed by Shigeru miyamoto for ONE game in mind, that being Mario 64.
Sega Saturn was my console growing up, couldn't afford more than one so when that was bought for me for Christmas I was stuck with it from 1995-1999. Games I remember playing a lot were Mr Bones, Resident Evil (one of my all time favourite games) Road Rash (Think it actually looked better on the Saturn) Nights into Dreams (never really played it that much, but owned it and still have that original copy) Virtua Fighter 2 (one of the games that did make friends somewhat envious)
I played a little n64 when I was super young but my brother and I traded it in for a gamecube which is where my love for games really started, however three weeks ago I got an n64 a decent few games for it and man I adore this thing. Quickly moving up my list of best consoles.
Pro wrestlings popularity peaked between 96-2000, during that same period of time thq released 4 consecutive 4 player simaultaneous games based off first wcw, and then wwf all as n64 exclusives... that plus the turok games did so much for n64 that gets overlooked everytime people bring up the first party support and rare brand games. Not to mention the 3 or 4 star wars exclusives also. Plus, almost no loading time with cartridges.
I enjoy the cadence of your voice. It feels like a combination of Scott the Woz and Will Forte, but not in any kind of derivative way. Very pleasing to listen to. Keep up the great content.
I have to admit that up until a few years ago, I had no idea the Saturn was a then-competitor to the N64 and ps1. I had heard the name at the time but always assumed it was somewhere in between the 16 bit and 32 bit era.
Out of these 3 I only have experience with 2, the n64 and Playstation. I haven't played any Sega Saturn games. I think the good thing about the Saturn, is that it would be a new experience for me. I have always liked the way the 6 button controller looks. Perhaps one day I'll sit down and play it.
It's really one of the most difficult match ups I can think of. I grew up with an N64 and my all time favorite games are on it. Nintendo's franchises were on fire and they had way more successes with transitioning to 3d than misfires. I also got a PS1 a bit later and the sheer volume and variety on there is staggering. You can be playing the ps1 for two decades and still run into games you didn't know it had. RPGs aren't always my thing but its hard to argue with how many top of the line ones the PS1 had. I got into the Saturn very recently by comparison and it's missing a lot of the franchise/marquee level stuff of the others on the surface, but digging deep and trying games out has yielded some of the most fun gaming I've had in years, to the point that it could be my new favorite. The Saturn 3D Controller is the best out of the 5 or so controllers available across all 3 platforms imo.
I got N64 at launch, rented playstation at launch and years later ended up trading my virtual boy for my friends second PS1 (lucky I know) but only got into Saturn games in the past 10 years or so. I find myself playing more Saturn games than the others at this point but Mario 64, OoT and symphony of night are mainstays in my rotation. All three systems are gems really!
PS1: This was the system I liked the least. The biggest problem for me were the constant load times which came with having a CD based system. There is no denying that the PS1 had a huge library of games and for genres where loading was less frequent waiting a bit was tolerable. I never owned a PS1 and only started collecting games when I bought a PS2 because of backwards compatibility. N64: This was the first system I bought with my own money. My only real issue with N64 was the lack of 3rd party support which meant fewer game options. Having 4P support built into the console was a HUGE deal. SS: I didn't own a Saturn until long after it's demise because importing games as a teenager was too expensive. In fact, most of the games I enjoy on the system are from Japan. I even bought a Japanese Saturn and only use the Action Replay to play North American releases.
9:10 I love the way you express yourself with these cutaway scenes, you're so funny and talented! hahah You reminded me of the Genie from Aladdin, there lmao
I think the reason the N64 is remembered so strongly in comparison to the better selling Playstation is two things: 1) Multiplayer, even if not as many people owned an N64, just as many people had memorable experiences with one. Some friend groups may have just had one or two friends with the console for game nights. 2) So few people got rid of their N64, seriously. I went to college from 2013-2019 and there were so many people that kept N64's from their childhood. Hell, I still see N64's as an adult at some coworkers houses. It's a console that people held onto, unlike the playstation line which I feel a lot of people dump once the next one comes out, regardless of backwards compatibility.
Games Played: Einhander (0:08), Mario Kart 64 (0:28), Die Hard Arcade (0:53), Legend of Mana (1:29), Vampire Savior (1:40), Goldeneye 007 (3:40)
Although I love the GameCube I actually do think the Wii is better. Why? Because there are so many unique underrated gems on the Wii. These games are of course hidden among the see of crappy Shuffleware, but it's the coolest thing to find such amazing gems while looking through some of the crap games.
Die hard arcade. Amazing game
Cool
im heavily biased with Ps1 being the best as it was my first console, plus i loved/still love and own/play my original tomb raiders 1-5, spyro 1-3, resident evil 1-3, dino crisis, rayman 1-2, parasite eves and so much more love it
@@fireheartgames That; and the WII (or Revolution as originally named) not only could play all Gamecube titles... but N64 as well!

For those wondering, the take where I get slapped was attempted nearly 20 times until I could do it without flinching too soon. If you're thinking that must've hurt, it was nothing compared to how painful it was for my wife to slap me against her desire. But she powered through it. That's what I call true love folks :)

My wife would have gladly volunteered slapping me...under any circumstance.
They didn't need the CD or the 32X. They could have developed for the Genesis ad infinitum and continued to be successful.
@@blitheringrando1410
The Sega CD was fine.
I had an N64 and a playstation, but never had a Saturn .
My favorite console was playstation.
The Saturn has some great hidden gems.
The Nintendo 64 has some of my all time favourite games.
But damn the Playstation 1 is just top tier with some of the best variety I've seen in a console.
I like how you appreciate all three!

I'm intrigued as well. Never would've thought that's a game to look out for over the PC version.
Glad to hear you feel that way. There's always more I could have said, but I'm glad that you feel like I hit most of the main points.
I only recently found Mr Bird here and I just cant express how much I love finding a new face talking about the same old games
Seriously I am loving catching up on all the content
Glad you like it and I love having you on the channel!
Smart man!
And all 3 of these consoles love you. They told me so themselves.
Good to know!
@@RetroBirdGaming Those 3 consoles love you, but the 3DO hates you. It told me so.
The Saturn was awesome, the N64 was awesome, and the Playstation was awesome. Hard to give just one compliment.
Answer accepted :)
I was waiting for this! Staring at my phone every 5 minutes, LITERALLY.
I agree. The PlayStation 1 has always felt like a successor to the Super Nintendo without Nintendo games to me.
I never thought about it like that, but I suppose it's pretty true really
Well said!
Saturn is excellent at 3D as well. Did I mention it’s actually 64-bit like Nintendo 64?
Honestly haven't seen Pasta until PS2 dropped. I have no idea what happened to cause this bubble.

I'm a Nintendo fanboy and grew up playing the N64 and even I think it was a pretty terrible system. The PS1's game selection was just unbeatable.
I dont really like RPGS or fighting games so I kinda liked the N64
@@SoupyMittens Cool nothing wrong with that. The other night I was playing Star Wars Rogue Squadron on the N64. Very impressive game graphically on the system.
As an RPG fan, all 3 consoles are amazing:
N64 has Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 (timeless titles), Ogre Battle 64 and Custom Robo.
PS1 has Digimon World 1 & 3 (also timeless titles), Legend of Mana and YuGiOh Forbidden Memories.
Saturn only has Panzer Dragoon saga, but said title is a masterpiece (eagerly waiting for a remake).
It's interesting seeing someone defend the rpgs on the n64, especially compared to the other two.
Well said, though.
You're also forgetting hybrid heaven
I'm 15 and love my 64.
Keep it up!

Duke Nukem 3D. Sega Saturn. Best Port. The other two consoles had it as well but the Saturn port just kicks ass. And chews bubblegum.

Loved my N64 and didn’t hear about Saturn till after Dreamcast. Love the libraries of both consoles.
@@rayner864 sadly it's already "died" had to take apart and retune the laser power (thanks TH-cam for the how to) works now but not sure for how long
I’ve been always amazed at how little “fun” weighed in people’s opinion on deciding which console was the best.
The 1st party games, the focus on multiplayer, the lack of loading times, the 6 front buttons, the analog stick, the in cartridge memory of most games, the different colours of games, consoles and controllers and so on…
The n64 focused on friendship, happiness… childish stuff. Fun stuff nonetheless.
I didn’t own a Saturn and can’t remember having played it. I have no opinion on it.
Looks great though.
When I was a kid, everyone I knew had an N64, I didn't even knew sony was a thing until the ps2, but at the time I didn't have cable or internet maybe that played a part in it. I often found out about games by seeing them in stores every couple of months.
All right. Somebody who can relate!
Welcome to the channel and I hope that things turn around for you from that bad news. Sorry to hear about that.
All right! You played Legend of Mana back in the day!
The console I like the least of these three is easily the N64. However, I do love and appreciate it for its 4 player games.

having a built in 4-player port was a benevolent move on nintendo's part.

0:24 the Wii is 5 times better than the GameCube (it’s backwards compatible 😜)
Panzer Dragoon Zweii shits on every N64 game
@@cpiep sounds like a dignified game indeed
@@LJW1912 you do know you can play a repro US version of saga with a psuedo cart?
As someone who had a decent N64 collection growing up...yeah, I can tell you that the system has way more than just the small handful of most notable games. There's a lot of good stuff on there.
As for a favorite...well it would have to be between N64 and PS1 for me as I've never had or played a Saturn (never had any Sega consoles actually). But how can I choose between them? They're both so good!
Yeah, I feel the n64 library was the most consistent, in all honesty. I cant think of many games on it that are particularly "bad" by any degree.
Has 380 games worldwide. That’s a lot to me lol
Favorite games for each:
Guardian Heroes (Saturn)
GoldenEye (N64)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS1)
Whoever did it probably thought it was funny that they were out in the middle of nowhere.
I second that! Only thing it was missing was Tekken 3.
This my friends … to me …is the golden age of gaming … a perfect balance of harmony with video games …
Saturn is my least favourite of the 3:
Thing I liked about it: It had some cool designs (grey and white).
My 3 other groups of friends owned the N64 while I owned the PS1.
I don't regret it at all. The PS1 is my all time favourite console.
Same here. I knew more people that had a N64 than a PS1. I was very surprised to learn years later that the PS1 outsold the N64 by so much. It definitely did not feel like the PS1 was so much more popular than the N64 back then.
After doing some research I think my experience can be accounted for by the fact that I'm in Canada and the N64 sold exceptionally well in Canada.
Awesome! Sounds like fun times :)
The game library of the N64 is full of classics and amazing games.
I REALLY want Sega to create a Mini Saturn. Not because of nostalgia, but quite the opposite: I've NEVER EVER in my life have TOUCHED a Saturn and I'm incredibly curious to see what it offers.
I want them to release a Mini Saturn because most games are ridiculously expensive to collect for.
This video was very nice and fun. I like your facial expressions, they kill me everytime 🙂
Thank you Marc!
Pretty awesome you played Dragon Force back in the day! Don't hear about too many people who played it then.
Hahah it works out well because the GameCube was great for 4-player local multiplayer too!
Me TOO!!!! my neighbor, my friends, everyone i basically knew all had a Nintendo 64 and that was the only console we had.
And when I first saw the Nintendo 64 Controller, I was confused why it had three Hand Grips at the time.
INSTANT SUB. I love your delivery!
Welcome to the channel!
You really should try the Saturn 😉
@@sega-re-trop-vieux For sure. Any recommendations on where to start?
@@paddfootsam I'd start with the 2-D fighters. That will get you familiar with the Saturn pad, which is one of the best 2-D pads ever created.
I didnt even grow up with the 64 and I still like it
PS1: This was the system I liked the least.
I think the reason the N64 is remembered so strongly in comparison to the better selling Playstation is two things:
1) Multiplayer, even if not as many people owned an N64, just as many people had memorable experiences with one.
When I was in college around 2006, a couple people on my floor had a N64 as well. We'd do big multiplayer matches.
