As a kid I LOVED MY SNES, but now that I'm an adult in my mid 30's... I'm playing the Sega Genesis more than any other console! It was a great time to be alive oh the great memories. Who won this battle? WE DID!
I use to play Nintendo alot but when the Genesis came out i never touched a Nintendo console again or any other consoles either it's 2022 and still playing Sega genesis
@@Livinghopefulandhonest first off Sony is not a video game company they're a media and electronics company and second of all to me Playstation is straight garbage to me that's why I never owned one and never will. I emphasize on the fact that it's just my opinion.
+Legintown Lets not forget about Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, Gaiares, Shadow of the Beast, Mega Turrican, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Splatterhouse 2, Castlevania Bloodlines and the Thunder Force Series which all have extraordinary and unforgettable soundtracks!
streets of rage had the best soundtrack. my aunt came in the room thinking me and my cousin were listening to the radio and wanted to know the name of the songs we were playing.
Sega Genesis games: Sonic the hedgehog Sonic the hedgehog 2 Sonic the hedgehog 3 (and knuckles) Streets of rage Streets of rage 2 Streets of rage 3 Altered beast Mortal Kombat Contra hard corps Shinobi Castlevania bloodlines Ristar TMNT: hyperstone heist SNES games: Super Mario world Super Mario world 2: Yoshis island Super Mario kart The legend of Zelda: a link to the past Super Castlevania IV Earthbound Chrono trigger Secret of mana Final fantasy III Donkey kong country Donkey kong country II Donkey kong country III Starfox Super Metroid TMNT: turtles in time Ok, I’m just gonna say... both are awesome.
+killer Funny thing? My mother really could debate this with you and she's 56 years old. She got a master system for us and traded it back for a NES instead.
killer I know. I'm just amused that my mother literally could and has had this debate. you're using a figure of speech that is literally true in some cases.
the genesis was not made to compete with the SNES. it was meant to compete with the NES. the fact that the genesis went toe to toe with the SNES is a testament to how good sega was.
LOOL, NO by a long shot. The Master System was made to compete the NES, but perform poorly in America and Japan, so they rushed the Genesis to go toe to toe with the Turbo Graph 16. Both launched some years before the SNES in order to try to stealtthe market before the SNES was released, the both knew it was coming.
Care to share for which reasons? I sure enjoyed my Super Nintendo more! If I were to make a top 20 16-bit games, it'd be like this: 1. Super Metroid 2. Zelda 3 3. SFII Turbo (both) 4. Final Fantasy 6 5. Secret of Evermore 6. SimCity 7. Super Mario World 8. Secret of Mana 9. Bomberman (both: SNES was earlier, but Mega Bomberman is my fave) 10. ActRaiser 11. Breath of Fire 2 12. Super Mario Kart 13. Yoshi's Island 14. Chrono Trigger 15. Contra: Hard Corps 16. Mega Man X 17. Thunder Force 4 18. Final Fantasy 4 19. Robotrek 20. Shining Force 2
Both Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis were great consoles. Genesis had: Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sonic and Knuckles Castlevania: Bloodlines Altered Beast Bananza Bros. Strider Streets of Rage 1 Streets of Rage 2 Streets of Rage 3 Golden Axe series Phantasy Star series Toejam and Earl Contra: Hard Corps TMNT: Hyperstone Heist More sports games SNES had: Super Mario World Super Metroid Super Castlevania IV Super Ghouls N' Ghosts Super Mario Kart Castlevania: Dracula X Star Fox F-Zero Mega Man X series Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) Super Mario RPG Chrono Trigger Earthbound Contra III: The Alien Wars TMNT IV: Turtles in Time Donkey Kong Country Donkey Kong Country 2 Donkey Kong Country 3 In the end, both consoles left a great impact in all your childhoods.
You're honestly making the Snes look alot better because you're outright missing many of the greatest Genesis games. If you're gonna make a comparative list like this, actually make good ones for both consoles. To add... Revenge of Shinobi & Shinobi 3 (Shadow Dancer is good too) Gunstar Heroes Alien Soldier Dynamite Headdy Beyond Oasis and Crusader of Centy Rocket Knight Adventures Ristar Super Hang On Monster World IV (jp release) Ghouls & Ghosts Mega Turrican Adventures of Batman Plethora of excellent shooters the best being Thunder Force IV, Musha, Battle Mania 2, Bio Hazard Battle, Fire Shark etc there's a bunch. Both consoles are superb, this video really sucks.
Based on your list Supernes blows the genesis away lol Super Nes had so many amazing games all on one console to this day there has not been a console like it besides maybe the NES. Anyways you forgot 2 very important games A Link to the Past & Yoshi's Island.....BTW just having Super Metroid, ALttP, & Mario World is enough to blow Genesis away.
@@fardeenawan1793 face the facts my boy!!! Super Nes was always the king! Sega went under bc it wasnt as good!! The winner is indisputable: Super NES. Nintendo moved 49.1 million Super NES consoles over the course of the generation and beyond, far surpassing the Genesis, which sold 29 million units FACTS
You know, I kinda feel like SNES gets a bit too much attention. Sure, I love the system, but the Sega Genesis has a bunch of games that have been overlooked. And yes, the Genesis was a bit weaker than the SNES, but the consoles were a whole 2 years apart from each other. Sega Genesis:1989 Super Nintendo:1991. This is just my opinion, but try to show the rest of the Genesis library some more love.
I feel like if any generation was a tie, it was this one. Both had really great libraries, and both have plenty of games that I still like to play today. About the only big strike against the Genesis today is that sports titles don't age as well as other games.
But I also brought up the fact that the console itself was overlooked. The only game that people really bring up from the Sega Genesis is Sonic The Hedgehog. When I come to other Genesis Playthrough videos, a great amount of the comment sections say they had little knowledge of the games being played. Not because they were forgettable, but they just never heard of those games. And people mostly know about them from video game reviewers like AVGN, (Who does not review Sega games nearly as much as Nintendo games to begin with.) Or SomeCallMeJohnny. And the Console War videos. Nothing else.
Yeah, I may go back and buy another Genesis, because I feel like I missed a lot of great games back in the 90's. For obscure games, I know at the time I thought I was the only one who liked Shining Force back in the day (which has since been mentioned a lot by people who like old strategy games). I also really liked an action D&D game on the Genesis back in the day. I am sure there are a ton of great games that I have totally missed too. I know the Genesis had a very strong library.
Thoughtful Mirth It did^^, Shining Force is one of my all-time favorites and it's sequel is excellent too. This video like many others is just another bias snes fanboy promotion machine. Both consoles have amazing libraries and timelessly fun games, but the Genesis is strongly misunderstood and unfairly unappreciated. Do yourself a favor and invest in both systems, to only play one is to miss out on HALF of the classics from the era.
Thankfully a Pokemon TH-cam user named TheJwittz has a Top 10 list on his favorite Genesis titles, and he grew up with the beautiful Sega console. (Though, sadly, you can't comment on his videos anymore.)
It's not that they didn't stand the test of time, it's just that the genesis library was more like a small treasure trove in comparison to the SNES' vast cavern filled with gold. And I grew up with the genesis.
@@fardeenawan1793 Stop being a hater. He's right. The Sonic Trilogy is amazing! I'll give you that. But besides Sonic, no other exclusive on the genesis can stand up to Super Mario World, Mario Kart, A Link to the Past or even Super Metroid. That's just the way it is pal!
The snes had more development time. so of course there were going to be improvements. Still the Genny held its own. since developers were familiar w the 68000 processors they could maximize it.
Honestly, I'm one of the few people who prefers most of the music for the SEGA Genesis. I know the SNES had technically better sound quality, but the SEGA had more badass, hard rock sounding tunes, the kind I can mostly headbang to.
+Shadsilvson11 Both systems are great to have and both have their own unique sound that can be appreciated. Basically, if you're looking for classic, epic, or atmospheric music, go with the SNES. If you're looking for that gritty, rocking synth sound, go with the Genesis. You can't go wrong either way, though overall I prefer the SNES's sound quality. Earthworm Jim does sound better on Genesis, though.
Being a fan of Classic Game Room, I'm a bit disappointed with WatchMojo for taking CGR's footage and using it for this video without permission, especially since Mark, the producer of Classic Game Room, came out and said that you were not given permission to. :(
+sam1w2e Actually, it was called the Mega Drive everywhere else in the world, SEGA changed the name to Genesis in North America to avoid copyright issues.
Yeh you need both. I definitely prefer the Sega Genesis, to me it's not even close. But the SNES has some of the best RPG's of all time. No way am i missing out on Terranigma, Chronotrigger, FF2/3, Lufia II, Secret Of Mana/Evermore, Illusion Of Gaia, Breath Of Fire II, Soul Blazer. Shadowrun, YS III, Super Mario RPG, etc. And sometimes a multi platform game is actually better on the SNES, despite its lower resolution and the resulting smaller playfield.
Well, I see it two ways. 1. Both companies marketing was pretty big. Sure, Sega pretty much lied about "blast processing" (given that it was a glitch), but even so, both went at each others necks. 2. They had to give Sega an extra point, otherwise Nintendo would pretty much wipe the floor.
The marketing was really important in that era because video games were becoming extremely popular to the public and there wasn't a definitive name of which company would represent the medium by winning this popularity contest. Video games weren't really being marketed over television that much before the 16-bit era. It was nothing like how Sony and Microsoft compete. This was a console war - who would be the company to be the household name for gaming. Nintendo was slightly ahead from the popularity of Mario during the NES days, but Sega wanted to prove they could resonate with consumers better with their mascot, Sonic - and their lineup of 1st and 3rd party games. Nintendo overall had the better system and more memorable games, and when the next generation rolled out, Sega was too far behind to catch up even with superior hardware over Sony. Sony soaked up all the third party support and Nintendo could've had the PS1 hardware but had a falling out with Sony and Sony was just like, we'll make our own console. But Nintendo would still be the winner between themselves and Sega. They would still win big in the next Generation compared to Sega and kept Mario a household name while Sonic was a no-show.
and yet it has nothing to do with which is the better system. If you are an amazing marketer with a crappy product, who cares? Not saying Genesis is crappy but it still, it has nothing to do with which system you would recommend. They just threw it in to make the final score closer
Both systems were great but I have to give it to the Genesis. They had an abundance of unique titles and they weren’t afraid to not sensor their products. They really pushed that system to its limits considering what they had to work with. I give the Genesis the win for a better, broader, more unique and more mature game library as a whole.
I had a blast playing Sega Genesis for the first time... That was until I got my hands on a SNES. Both systems were awesome during those years but the SNES was a better console overall for me.
Both equally fun, so what could break the tie?? Genesis had a Motarola 6800p processor. Same chip as Neo Geo arcade cabinets. Twice the SNES chips processing power. Genesis wins.....
Omg they are both sooo good! Genesis has Sonic 1-3, Streets of rage, altered beast, Alex Kidd and more! the SNES has my favorite mario game, mario world, Mario kart, Donkey kong country and F - zero! it's hard.
+MrBrenman21 no it wasn't. of all the games i have emulated there are super mario world, super mario world 2 yoshi's island, super metroid, earthworm jim, super mario kart and the legend of zelda a link to the past for the snes and sonic 2 for the genesis sonic 2 was amazing but overall the best games exclusive to those systems that i liked playing, there are a lot more for the snes
+Dembilaja Of course, those games are fantastic aswell, although I've never fullt completed SoM, but even without those games, Super Metroid and ALTTP would still be enough to make me pick the SNES
+lasseplatburk Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Starfox, LoZ A Link to the Past, FF 4 & 6 (& FF5), Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana (& 3 as well), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Actraiser series, Soul Blazer series (Terranigma as well), Earthbound. So many great ones.
Unfortunately, as a European I never got to play Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound or any of the Final Fantasy games :(. Also, although I love Actraiser and Secret of Mana, I never played those back in the day, I was born in 1992 so I mostly grew up with the PS1 and PS2, although the few games I had on the SNES were always my favorites.
+Joe M Crusader of Centy. I will say Chrono Trigger rules though. There are so many games that no body knows because no one talks about them. It's a circle jerk when it comes to list videos.
Nikki Seven Solos I agree with all of that. As long as they keep releasing games for the PC, I have no reason to buy the latest consoles. And of course thanks to torrent sites I don't even have to pay for the games. Sweet deal :). Speaking of Final Fantasy... The only reason I got an Xbox 360 in the end was to try out FF13 and holy shit that game was a let down. I'm not gonna get my hopes up for FF15 or the FF7 remake.
+xXTheRainKingXx Old school console wars were legit. Now it's positively tame by comparison. The actually companies don't directly and openly attack each other anymore and it's all pretty homogeneous really. It's just the fanboys/girls doing it on their own. I'm a PC guy now too, but you claim to be so yet are actively contributing to the single biggest hurdle for PC gaming. It's not a sweet deal in overall sense because it's a big part of why so many developers opt out of developing or porting to PC. Even when they do, it's generally the lowest priority.
1990: Super Mario World 1991: A Link to the Past 1992: Kirby's Dream Land 1993 Star Fox 1994: Donkey Kong Country 1995: Yoshi's Island 1996: Super Mario 64 (also Pokemon red and Blue) 1997: Goldeneye 007 1998: Ocarina of Time 1999: Super Smash Brothers Those were the 1990s for Nintendo.
That's why you get both consoles at the time and get whatever games you want to play on each one. This fanboi thing is bizarre as fuck. Seeing as they both had good games and shit games.
@@Dabirdisdaword5 yes i saw the video but i dont agree with this video because everyone has its own opinions someone likes genesis more and someone likes snes more
I grew up with the SNES, and though it has better graphics, sound, and controller, there was a certain gritty/arcade-like charm with the Genesis' audio and visuals, and its controller looked cooler. Both systems had a ton of exclusive titles making both worth owning. And while many SNES ports looked/sounded superior, some Genesis ports played faster which was more fun for sports and side-scrollers.
What makes this even more ironic is that Final Fantasy wasn't even released on the SNES in all regions. Here in Germany, it was never released on the SNES at all. Well, we had FF Mystic Quest/Mystic Quest Legend but that was just a really stripped down version of the original FF-games and it also suffered from a HORRIBLE German translation (seriously, most of the dialogue doesn't make sense at all). Here the SNES really wasn't that "ultimate RPG-machine" as which it was hyped in the states. No Final Fantasy, no Chrono Trigger and not even Super Mario RPG...
SteReo I bet you only got Secret of Mana, the worst game ever made. Also the SNES only has like, what, maybe 20-30 games people like and only 25 or so are actually good! Compare that to the Genesis, where there are so much hidden gems and amazing consoles. Some may say the SNES had slightly higher highs (not really) but it CERTAINLY had lower lows. Most of its library are forgettable to downright bad games, bar a few games here and there. The Genesis however has much more hidden gems that are worth checking out today.
@@maxstuartfernandez7912 Making hits like Persona and Yakuza, just for multiple platforms, which I feel is good for Sega. And Nintendo is doing good as well, and the Switch IMO is their second best console, only behind the Gamecube. Fuck the SNES though. Worst Nintendo console.

Lord karnage is showing a newer 3rd party licensed controller. The genny had a properly made 6 button controller. The 6 button top controller is way better for fighting games than the snes. The original 6 button controllers were only $20 thus cheap. Both the snes and genny aged well and not just the snes. Virtua racing and star fox out dated with sucky ass polygons. The 2 year newer snes was running on a 8bit cpu. The genny true color the snes static colors. Nobody uses static colors it's a true color world. The genny had more violent/adult games. Everybody knows that nintendo is just for little kids gah gah goo goo. Mojo you are very nintendo bias. The playstation back in the day kicked both sega and nintendo's ass yet you claim it was a tie between the ps and n64.. The saturn fortunately did not over invest in the melting polygons and has aged better than both the ps and n64. Virtua fighter and virtua cop in the retro world are not a top ten saturn game. It's astal, street fighter alpha, oasis and guardian heroes that rule the roost.
Nintendo buried Sega in the long run, people who argue Sega is somehow better should probably take of their nostalgia glasses and see that the SNES library for the most part is superior, Sega had some good titles, but any attempt at a serious library comparison is a landslide victory for Super Nintendo
'take of their nostalgia glasses'. I could understand them taking them off but not taking a part of them; but that wouldn't sound right. And i never had a sega console but i decided to get a couple a couple of years ago. I don't own and never have owned any nintendo consoles older than 2004 (a DS). My other nin console is a wii u, which is one of my favourites.
+Skibbity Bop 'Far more superior' is terrible grammar. Yes I have played a SNES. And you can't really tell whether one console is superior to the other just by playing it.
Indeed that I readily agree with, what i didn't agree with was Marcel's whiny Nintendo bashing, when he knows that SNES killed Sega Genesis in the long run of their market share battle.
I wish Nintendo still had a true like-minded rival like Sega. Sony and Microsoft are equal like minded rivals and then you have Nintendo off by itself... We need another Sega!
Oh lord, another one of these... I lol'd at "Genesis has 72Kb of RAM" though. Always, without fail, every single one of these kinds of videos, the people have no idea what they're talking about.
+Douglas Roth It's all really a battle of opinion. People say it's a battle from over 20 years ago, but the truth is console wars never end especially Genesis vs SNES.
I grew up a SNES guy (I still own one by the way), but I do love me some Sega Genesis. So many great games across every genre and some I consider better than the SNES counterparts. Many of my favorite games include Sonic 1-3 and Knuckles, Mortal Kombats 1-3, Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Shinobi, Battletoads/Double Dragon, Golden Axe I and II, Strider, WWF Wrestlemania - The Arcade Game, NBA Action 94, Sports Talk Baseball, World Series Baseball, X-Men 1 and 2, Comix Zone and many more. People don't realize how stacked the Genesis was! I'm now glad to own both to this day!
Alien Soldier, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, Road Rash, Virtua Racing too. So many great games on the Genesis, I'd have to say I preferred the catalogue of games more.
For those who want to get into 16-Bit Retrogaming here's a list featuring 20 of both consoles's greatest games. For the SNES: Actraiser Chrono Trigger Contra III - The Alien Wars Donkey Kong Country Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy Kong's Quest Earthbound F-Zero Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy VI Kirby Super Star Mega Man X Street Fighter II Turbo Super Castlevania IV Super Mario Kart Super Mario RPG - Legend of The Seven Stars Super Mario World Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Super Metroid Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time The Legend of Zelda: A Link To the Past For the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive: Aladdin Alien Soldier Castlevania Bloodlines Contra Hard Corps Dynamite Headdy Gunstar Heroes MUSHA Phantasy Star IV Revenge of Shinobi Ristar Rocket Knight Adventures Shining Force II Shinobi III - Return of The Ninja Master Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles Streets of Rage 2 Bare Knuckle III Thunder Force III Thunder Force IV Vectorman
"Genesis had better marketing." So what? We're talking about games and fun factor here, not commercials. I disregard that point for Sega. "Sega had better arcade ports." Not really. Their versions of Street Fighter was vastly inferior. If not for blood, the Genesis Mortal Kombat would be seen as the loser against the Snes version. Some people like the Genesis music better, and that's a matter of opinion. SNES was much better than Genesis.
The only two games I can think of off the top of my head that were better on the Genesis were Earthworm Jim and Robocop vs The Terminator. The SNES was better across the board. Can't even front though, Toe Jam and Earl was awesome.
I like both consoles since they had good exclusives. Its like xbox vs playstation. Sure playstation has spiderman but xbox has the rare collection and gear of war combo
I fail to see how Phantasy Star IV doesn't measure up to the SNES classics- I've played them all and anyone who claims to like RPGs but misses out on Phantasy Star IV because of the pro-Nintendo bias of videos like this is passing up on a true classic.
Other great Genesis RPG's which shouldn't be overlooked are Pirates! Gold, Cadash, Shining Force II, and Starflight - which is all the more remarkable for being a port of a 1986 PC game.
But if lots of people don’t know about them and people in the comments have to go tell others about them that’s why the good rpgs sega did have either could not compare to Nintendo’s or just were in heard of lots of the time and let’s be honest true classics are anything on the genesis or snes
@@SmellinDSyrup True, FF6 and CT are better games then PS4 but PS4 is a really good rpg and it does somethings better then those two games, anyone that apreciates 16 rpg shouldnt dismiss it because its in a sega console. It had double and triple techs before CT for example. Its a game that is worth be given a chance
Yeah, Phantasy Star 4 is good, up there with Breath of Fire 2 and Final Fantasy 4... but I wouldn't say it's as good as FF6, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound (if you're into that game).
Sega's mistake was trying to compete by adding all those stupid add-ons. In 1992 they had over 50% of the market, and that was just 2 years after Nintendo had a reported 90% of the market. Sega let it slip away in 1993 when the FX chip allowed polygon graphics to be put into games. Sega went with CD to also compete with NEC's TG-16, but it was a mistake, then kept on trying to make Genesis compete by adding the 32-X. Give it up Sega, use games, not peripherals to get your system to sell! That's what Nintendo did, and that's why they outsold the Genesis (granted by only 9 million, but still, SNES competed well into the PS/N64/Saturn era).
Can't you all stop debating and call a truce seriously would you be acting like this at work Nintendo, Sony, Xbox and many others are all good video game companies who all make beautiful videogames and we as a community should be focused on helping each other and not bickering like children. edit 1: I hate autocorrect
No mention of my favorite genre: SHMUPS. The Genesis ruled over the SNES in that category. Only the TG-16 gave the Genesis a run in that area. So IMHO, the Genesis takes the last round.
I like Watchmojo, I do have to say, I wish they would record their own stuff and not rip other TH-camr's content unless they are paying for it. I would wager that none of the owners of the clips got any compensation from this video ( minus commercials). Other than that, I love watchmojo.
Sega barely had any games!? Fuck you Watchmojo! The Genesis has tons of awesome games such as: - Vectorman 1 & 2 - TMNT: The Hyperstome heist - Streets of Rage series - Ecco the Dolphin - Comic Zone - Eternal Champions - The adventures of Batman & Robin - Wardner - Jurassic Park - Ghostbusters - Sonic the Hedgehog series - Toejam & Earl - Tiny Toon Adventures: Busters hidden treasure - Taz Mania - Disney's Aladdin - Virtua Racing - Battletoads - Pulseman - Kid Chameleon - Shinobi series - Ristar - Gunstar Heroes - Megaman: the Wily wars - Garfield: Caught in the act - Mickey Mania + many more awesome games.
Most of, but not all, the games listed here were utterly forgettable. In the end there isn't a single Genesis game that can stand up to classics like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Secret of Mana, Earthbound or the Mega Man X series.
+Jokerisdaking what you mention were snes games. the first comment mentions game that are from sega genesis and most teens and kids including me (this current generation)don't know half of this games. but i do know most of snes games. my most favorite is final fantasy 6 or 3. i really don't like chrono trigger despite having multiple endings and time travels. earthbound, mario, secret of evermore, zelda etc are from snes and still well known till today.
I own them both, and they are both equally awesome!! I know some ppl hate Genesis controllers but I've always loved the ergonomics of it, just fits so nicely in my hands
Not a sega fanboy, but i personally prefer the sega controller. I don't like that it didn't have shoulder buttons, but the buttons it did have felt better and the Dpad was AMAZING and one of the best dpads of all time.
Well, they could have talked about backwards compatibility They could have talked about quantity and variety of game genres. I know they touched on that when they were discussing exclusives, but they could have gone into more detail than just a few highlights. They could have talked about the sound chips when talking about hardware. The Genesis used a type of Yamaha synthesizer, whereas I think the SNES used a sampling synthesizer (don't quote me on that. I don't know if the latter is true) They could have talked about ease of programming. This may not seem important to the end user, but it dictated what kind of games ended up on either system. etc.
+Atlas Vulpes There was no backwards compatibility on either console. The NES cartridges and controller plugs could not work on the SNES, and ditto with the Sega Master System to the Genesis. The only real backwards compatibility was the AV cable for the SNES still being used up through the Gamecube (forward compatibility?).
+IMASWIFTAR12 True, but it was called the SEGA Power base converter, the Master Gear Converted was the one they released later for the Game Gear that allowed you to play Master System games portable on the Game Gear.
The last part about staying power is so damn biased. i will always take the genesis rep over the snes. just bc you guys like snes games more doesnt mean the gens objectively had an inferior lineup. you already mentioned how both consoles differed in terms of their approach. that would mean objectively they both have ups and downs, of which is certainly not up to you or any other content creator/game journalist to decide which is superior
As a kid in the 90s I paid attention more to stuff like this, and I remember the kids had SNES more than the Genesis. What finally gave Nintendo a real rival was the Sony ps1, which was versus the n64. I went with the ps1 myself, but that’s because that’s what my brother bought and he let me play it. I miss Jet Moto and twisted metal.
I owned both a Genesis and SNES back in 1992. I played my Genesis way more. Now days I don’t play SNES at all, but I just bought the Genesis Mini a few months ago and have played it a lot.
I owned both back in the day and much preferred the SNES (I actually sold my Genesis to get the SNES back then). I also literally have both a SNES Classic Edition and Genesis Mini sitting beneath my TV as I type and I can tell you that I play the SNES waaay more. In fact, I've just started hacking my SNES Classic Edition and adding Genesis games to that as it runs them with less issues, has a much nicer interface, and I prefer using the SNES controller even for Genesis as well. So, yeah, as far as I'm concerned the SNES was and still is the rightful king. The Genesis is great too though, don't get me wrong, and I'm often surprised these days when I see how many things it did that were better than on the SNES that I just never really noticed or appreciated back in the day, like it pushing way more stuff on screen in most games without any slowdown (shmups and beat 'em ups being two of the genres where it generally really stands quite a bit ahead of the SNES in terms of performance).
Super nintendo is easy win if you like the JRPG genre just to say some: Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, Seiken Densetsu and Secret of mana, Ogre Battle, Secret of Evermore, Earth fucking bound, Terranigma, Illusion of Time, Dragon Quest, Breath of Fire and needless to say Final Fantasy
+Magnus Theli BTW i know some of these games were released also for Sega but usually most of them came for super nintendo way before... stil no h8 for Sega just sayin Super nintendo for its time was the best console (do i need to put IMO?)
Isn't this kinda of an unfair battle?? I mean, Snes had DK Country 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's island, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Star Fox, Megaman X, X2, X3, Super Mario Kart, Kirby Super Star, FF3, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past. While Genesis had... Sonic?
I have been checking out the Genesis for a while now, and it actually seems to have a lot of great games. I had lots of fun with "Contra: Hard Corps" - which I actually think is the best Contra game ever made - and I have also been playing the scrolling shooters "M.U.S.H.A." and "Zero Wing" lately, which seem like very good games, and also the phenomenal run & gun title "Gunstar Heroes".
You gave Genesis the dumbest wins. The Genesis' six button controller is better than SNES imo. And just because most of Sega's games didn't create franchises (probably due to Saturn's failure), that doesn't mean there weren't awesome games for it. SNES did have awesome games, but Genesis is way too overlooked when it comes to game library.
Well the reason the 6 button controller didn't win is because you have to buy it on top of the console. I agree that Genesis had the dumbest wins. SNES had plenty of ports like Doom, Wolfenstein, and Killer Instinct which were not available on Genesis. A good win for Genesis could have been how it innovated game cases. SNES used lame cardboard boxes while the Genesis used legit plastic cases that protected the games. There were definitely good games on Genesis, however SNES just has so many games that had all kinds of impacts on the video game industry.
Sorry if I posted this before, but I really don't feel like browsing through over 4000 comments just to find 1 I may or may not have posted on this video before. It takes up too much of my time. I grew up on Super Nintendo & I still play it to this day. Actually, I got out of it for a while in 2002, but 5 years later, my Grandpa gave me a model 2 Super Nintendo he & my Grandma bought at a garage sale in 1998 & it had been sitting in his basement unused for some time, but we left our games there when our Super Nintendo broke. I have been back into playing Super Nintendo ever since. Nearly 6 years ago, I bought a Sega Genesis & like the Super Nintendo, I still play today but I also have Sega CD & Sega 32X. I think the Super Nintendo overall has better exclusive titles, such as Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid & F-Zero. The only (1st party) Sega Genesis exclusive titles I can think of are the Sonic the Hedgehog games (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic Spinball & Dr. Robotnic's Mean Bean Machine, are there any I missed?) Wait, there's also the Streets of Rage games, but I don't know if they're 1st party. Super Nintendo pros... -More colors -Better sound -Better exclusive titles -Default controller is perfect for every game -Games became more powerful over time & the console didn't need any add-ons to play them -Super Game Boy -Mode 7 capabilities Super Nintendo cons... -Some games were censored (such as Primal Rage & Mortal Kombat 1 where blood & gore were removed completely & didn't have any codes to include them) -Poor sluggish controls in Mortal Kombat 1 (I don't know if there are any other Super Nintendo games that have sluggish controls) -Processor wasn't as powerful -Games came in cardboard boxes which people often threw out Sega Genesis pros... -Better console design for model 1 (that's just my opinion) -Games came in plastic cases & that trend continued on into the next generations of gaming consoles -Blast processing -Some games such as Primal Rage & Mortal Kombat 1 were uncensored (with or without a cheat code) -Better versions of Toy Story & NBA Jam Sega Genesis cons... -Needed to be on life support for more powerful games & I'm talking about Sega CD & Sega 32X -Needed to buy an extra controller to play games like the variations of Street Fighter II & the Mortal Kombat games with a better experience -Sound wasn't as good but some music tracks were still enjoyable (some voices sounded scratchy & some bad guys died sounding like a wet fart) -No Mode 7 capabilities

+Geovanny Ayala Exactly
and the snes was meant to compete with the genesis
LOOL, NO by a long shot. The Master System was made to compete the NES, but perform poorly in America and Japan, so they rushed the Genesis to go toe to toe with the Turbo Graph 16. Both launched some years before the SNES in order to try to stealtthe market before the SNES was released, the both knew it was coming.

Watchmojo embarrassed themselves as having no credibility the instant they said Gunstar Heroes didn't stand the test of time.
It's not that they didn't stand the test of time, it's just that the genesis library was more like a small treasure trove in comparison to the SNES' vast cavern filled with gold. And I grew up with the genesis.

Earthworm Jim does sound better on Genesis, though.

dont think you should have put a "marketing" round in...
they had to to give Genesis another point to make it close
Well, I see it two ways.
1. Both companies marketing was pretty big. Sure, Sega pretty much lied about "blast processing" (given that it was a glitch), but even so, both went at each others necks.
2. They had to give Sega an extra point, otherwise Nintendo would pretty much wipe the floor.
@@Luigiawesome13
Agreed
Maybe console design could’ve been more relevant
What does the marketing have to do with the console.
Bargeta If you don't market it people won't be tempted to buy it except fanboys
blast processing.....
if that is a thing °~°
@@mayttfactor Marketing has everything to do with the system

Both systems had a ton of exclusive titles making both worth owning. And while many SNES ports looked/sounded superior, some Genesis ports played faster which was more fun for sports and side-scrollers.
"Phantasy Star couldn't stand up against Final Fantasy" Dude, really?
4:37 Golden Axe! One of my most loved games which I've beat many times with my brother as a kid.
SNES has Super Metroid. Not a single game on the Genesis comes even close to that.
overrated shit tbh
+Marcel Weber pfff... 😒
Never played a metroid game.

you aren't missing anything relevant
All i know is that it's some nintendo space game with some character called Samus which my friend was playing as on wii u smash.
Nintendo buried Sega in the long run, people who argue Sega is somehow better should probably take of their nostalgia glasses and see that the SNES library for the most part is superior, Sega had some good titles, but any attempt at a serious library comparison is a landslide victory for Super Nintendo
Well, you do too, and you need to practice your spellings more often.
None of them are directly superior to each other. It's just a matter of personal preference.
Indeed that I readily agree with, what i didn't agree with was Marcel's whiny Nintendo bashing, when he knows that SNES killed Sega Genesis in the long run of their market share battle.
sega gets no love from watch mojo :(
Ikr! it's like WatchMojo doesn't like sega
Lol
Because Sega competes with Nintendo for no reason so that's why no one loves sega
For a reason cus Sega is so bad compared to nintendo
@@mrmoi9838 true man and also Nintendo doesn't release many bad games

Super Nin-ten-do, Sega Gene-sis...when I was dead broke I couldn't picture this!
50-inch screen, money-green leather sofa
Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur
We're still debating this today! That just goes to show just how awesome both systems were.
Here in Europe we called it, Mega Drive. A better name in my opinion
Sure, the SNES had better music technology, but seldom were as memorable compared to Genesis/MegaDrive
I wish Nintendo still had a true like-minded rival like Sega. Sony and Microsoft are equal like minded rivals and then you have Nintendo off by itself... We need another Sega!
why is SNES better, one game Chrono Trigger
+ACACE10 chrono trigger is my favourite RPG ever
they didn't explain much but snes does win this battle
+ACACE10 ...FF6.
And obviously Earthbound
this basically
Oh lord, another one of these...
I lol'd at "Genesis has 72Kb of RAM" though. Always, without fail, every single one of these kinds of videos, the people have no idea what they're talking about.
actors are paid to say lines...i have some bad news for you bud. tom hanks isnt a real astronaut
As a Nintendo fan I'm glad the SNES won.
+MONKEY D. NUTS Not really I mean Sega literally merged with Nintendo
+Douglas Roth It's all really a battle of opinion. People say it's a battle from over 20 years ago, but the truth is console wars never end especially Genesis vs SNES.
both are stellar systems. one can't really top the other if you're looking at the systems as a whole
Same
+Douglas Roth I owned both systems as a kid.
I'm here for the comments.... lol.
I grew up playing Earthbound and Super mario world. (and I also played the N64
Yeah Both are my Nostalgia ;)
I never had a SNES but luckily I have a SNES Classic Edition, so I could have a little taste of 90's nostalgia!

SNES was much better than Genesis.
too bad f u
The only two games I can think of off the top of my head that were better on the Genesis were Earthworm Jim and Robocop vs The Terminator. The SNES was better across the board. Can't even front though, Toe Jam and Earl was awesome.
Exactly. Don't get me wrong, Genesis had some really fun games. I enjoy playing all the old games on both SNES and Genesis. Snes is better though.
street fighter 2 on genesis was awful now a cd version would have been better
shut up yu stupid peice of SSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIT
I like both consoles since they had good exclusives. Its like xbox vs playstation. Sure playstation has spiderman but xbox has the rare collection and gear of war combo
Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. When I first saw the gameplay I couldn’t picture this.
I’m a poet and I know it.
Playstation vs. Nintendo 64

+DvS 90's you are correct
Playstation in sales and n64 in games
+Jamiens Gaming and Stuff Hell no

Genesis outsold SNES in the US.
Can't you all stop debating and call a truce seriously would you be acting like this at work Nintendo, Sony, Xbox and many others are all good video game companies who all make beautiful videogames and we as a community should be focused on helping each other and not bickering like children. edit 1: I hate autocorrect
The video should be 20 second. It should be a guy saying "SNES has Chrono Trigger, Metroid, Donkey Kong" The End
And then another could say "Genesis has Alien Soldier, Shinobi and Thunder Force IV". The End. Both systems rule.
@@brownmetalking7833 eh.
It's okay I know Snes fanboys dislike action heavy games and dismiss them regardless of quality.
No mention of my favorite genre: SHMUPS. The Genesis ruled over the SNES in that category. Only the TG-16 gave the Genesis a run in that area. So IMHO, the Genesis takes the last round.
No
I like Watchmojo, I do have to say, I wish they would record their own stuff and not rip other TH-camr's content unless they are paying for it. I would wager that none of the owners of the clips got any compensation from this video ( minus commercials).
Other than that, I love watchmojo.

Don't know maybe WatchMojo hates Sonic.
Because watchmojo has bias against sega.

Sega barely had any games!? Fuck you Watchmojo! The Genesis has tons of awesome games such as:
- Vectorman 1 & 2
- TMNT: The Hyperstome heist
- Streets of Rage series
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Comic Zone
- Eternal Champions
- The adventures of Batman & Robin
- Wardner
- Jurassic Park

- Sonic the Hedgehog series
- Toejam & Earl
- Tiny Toon Adventures: Busters hidden treasure
- Taz Mania
- Disney's Aladdin
- Virtua Racing
- Battletoads
- Pulseman
- Kid Chameleon
- Shinobi series
- Ristar
- Gunstar Heroes
- Megaman: the Wily wars
- Garfield: Caught in the act
- Mickey Mania
+ many more awesome games.
wanted to add. splatterhouse games and monster league football
as for todays generation, most people don't know these games but know more of snes games.
+tsunaxsawada10 I know I was mentioning SNES games. Go reread my comment. That was my ENTIRE point!
I own them both, and they are both equally awesome!! I know some ppl hate Genesis controllers but I've always loved the ergonomics of it, just fits so nicely in my hands
Both are great but I prefer the SNES, Might just be my favourite console of all time.
Not a sega fanboy, but i personally prefer the sega controller. I don't like that it didn't have shoulder buttons, but the buttons it did have felt better and the Dpad was AMAZING and one of the best dpads of all time.
I love nintendo but I love the Sega Genesis more than the SNES
no sega = nintendo
Care to share for which reasons?
I sure enjoyed my Super Nintendo more!
If I were to make a top 20 16-bit games, it'd be like this:
1. Super Metroid
2. Zelda 3
3. SFII Turbo (both)
4. Final Fantasy 6
5. Secret of Evermore
6. SimCity
7. Super Mario World
8. Secret of Mana
9. Bomberman (both: SNES was earlier, but Mega Bomberman is my fave)
10. ActRaiser
11. Breath of Fire 2
12. Super Mario Kart
13. Yoshi's Island
14. Chrono Trigger
15. Contra: Hard Corps
16. Mega Man X
17. Thunder Force 4
18. Final Fantasy 4
19. Robotrek
20. Shining Force 2
Fair, but incomplete. I would have liked to see this video go into more detail and compare more factors between the systems.
+Atlas Vulpes What other factors you thought could have been explored?
Well, they could have talked about backwards compatibility
They could have talked about quantity and variety of game genres.
I don't know if the latter is true)
They could have talked about ease of programming.
Did not know about that converter. Actually a really great idea. Looked it up, and I might just have to pick one up now.
+Magnus Theli only dull kids that cut themselves were into rpgs. And if earthbound is so great, why did it flop?
+Magnus Theli :)
skinsman82000 terrible marketing.
I like Nintendo but I like sonic over Mario but sega and Nintendo equally
SNES: Chrono Trigger, Zelda and Metroid (Tons of RPGs)
Genesis: Sports, Racing, Fighting, Beat 'em Ups and 6 Buttons Controller
But they are not good games unlike nintendos so shut up boomer
Isn't this kinda of an unfair battle??
I mean, Snes had DK Country 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's island, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Star Fox, Megaman X, X2, X3, Super Mario Kart, Kirby Super Star, FF3, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past.
While Genesis had... Sonic?
The snes is slow
@@segaaction7611 and the Genesis isn't?
@@iwoomy752 Atleast the Genesis outsold the snes in the USA.
@@segaaction7611 actually, it's the other way around.
I find it odd that you look at different criteria in every review.
Robotnic's Mean Bean Machine, are there any I missed?)
Wait, there's also the Streets of Rage games, but I don't know if they're 1st party.
Super Nintendo pros...
-More colors
-Better sound
-Better exclusive titles
-Default controller is perfect for every game
-Games became more powerful over time & the console didn't need any add-ons to play them
-Super Game Boy
-Mode 7 capabilities
Super Nintendo cons...
-Some games were censored (such as Primal Rage & Mortal Kombat 1 where blood & gore were removed completely & didn't have any codes to include them)
-Poor sluggish controls in Mortal Kombat 1 (I don't know if there are any other Super Nintendo games that have sluggish controls)
-Processor wasn't as powerful
-Games came in cardboard boxes which people often threw out
Sega Genesis pros...
-Better console design for model 1 (that's just my opinion)
-Games came in plastic cases & that trend continued on into the next generations of gaming consoles
-Blast processing
-Some games such as Primal Rage & Mortal Kombat 1 were uncensored (with or without a cheat code)
-Better versions of Toy Story & NBA Jam
Sega Genesis cons...
-Needed to be on life support for more powerful games & I'm talking about Sega CD & Sega 32X
-Needed to buy an extra controller to play games like the variations of Street Fighter II & the Mortal Kombat games with a better experience
-Sound wasn't as good but some music tracks were still enjoyable (some voices sounded scratchy & some bad guys died sounding like a wet fart)
-No Mode 7 capabilities
I dont get why everyone stands for Nintendo
:(
nintendo snes had megaman 7 , X1, X2 and X3. Those were incredible games.
