The Odyssey was literally the first console, the 2600 came out 5 years after. Definitely not worthy of the list.

Magnavox Odyssey was the first home video game console. I thought that would've been enough to spare it from this list but apparently not.

Virtual Boy was pretty much a torture device, even 20 years later I could still feel the strain in my eyes from playing that thing.

Actually, home Pong games came out after the Odyssey (mid-70s). The Odyssey was THE first home video game console.

I'm going to cry foul on the Sega CD. That system actually did add a lot of power to the Sega Genesis. The more time I've spent with it, the more and more really good games I find for it.
Yea some great games came out for the Sega CD system...Lunar series, and other Working Design rpgs
It seems more based on the negative effects of the gaming systems.
This is for all the entries except the number 1. While the virtual boy was indeed a failure it didn't affect Nintendo very much at all. I think they put it on number 1 as Nintendo is the most famous video game company and it's their only big project that was a complete failure. The Wii U might not have done all too well but I wouldn't call it a complete failure.

I have to disagree. The Odyssey at least functioned as intended and actually finished development. The Virtual Boy was a prototype that should've never been released and only did because Nintendo rushed it out the door mid-development to free up manpower for the N64.
Yeah, it's hard to knock the first console that was built for homes. Sure, maybe it was only a minor success financially, but video games were a new industry, so there wasn't a lot of knowledge on how to market or sell it. I don't know how that makes in a candidate for being a worst console, especially since it did well enough to provide a starting point for the future of consoles.

Don't forget that the Odyssey was the first video game system ever released, so it is an important piece of history. Not saying it's good by today's standards, I'm just saying it's still an important part of gaming history.

The other big problem with this list is that most of the time they focused in the price, and not problems with hardware or software. I wouldn't have known what was truly bad about most of these systems had it not been for Play Value and The Angry Videogame Nerd.

What are you talking about? The Dreamcast didn't fail because of the Genesis' add-ons. It failed because of
A. Competition from the PlayStation 2
And B. The Sega Saturn being a commercial failure.
Yeah, it was a great console, but Sega was forced to abandon it due to financial losses caused by the Sega Saturn and the PS2.

***** Umm, no. the Saturn failed because of:
1. It lacked a true Sonic the Hedgehog platforming game which aided in the decline. There was going to be a game called Sonic X-treme but it was canceled and it got Sonic Jam which was just a compilation game.
2. When it was announced that the system would be released on September 2, 1995 by Tom Kalinske, the Sega of America CEO at the time, Sega of Japan decided to launch it early to give it an advantage over the PlayStation. So at E3 of May 11, 1995, Kalinske announced that 30,000 units were already shipped to retailers such as Toy R Us and were to be sold at $399. Retailers were upset at this because they were not informed and because of this, some retailers flat out dropped Sega from their lineup. When the PlayStation was announced it was priced at $299 to applause. This made it hard for gamers to obtain the Saturn.
3. Because it got rushed, many developers didn't have time to make games for it, giving it a small number of launch titles. Many games weren't developed for the system until four to five months later, when the system was supposed to launch.
4. In addition to the PlayStation, the Saturn also had competition with the Nintendo 64, which was only $199.
5. It's complex design made it difficult for third-party developers to make games for the system so third-party games were limited for the system. The main reason the Saturn was able to have so many games was because most of the games were ports to Sega arcade games.
Dreamcast RULES! I prefer PS2, though, but I played Dreamcast at a friend's and loved it.

My father had an Odyssey and it worked well on our old TV which was NOT a Magnavox
Not all 3DO games were time prompt based. It was definitely way ahead of its time. EA sports practically was born from 3DO and really it set the foundation for a lot of things.

No its because people who bought it back in the 70's 80's few people didn't have Magnavox televisions they have Sony sharp Panasonic JVC etc and when they bought they bought it would work for their TV's and so it failed a little on America but it might've successed in Europe and Japan.

+Luis Arturo Juegos Well as the only system to have Sonic CD, the best versions of Earthworm Jim and a few other good games, what it needed was an exclusive RPG. Something to prove that CDs are better than Cartridges.

I had one. Really enjoyed Fifa and YuYu Hakusho game.
The price tag did it in for just about everyone. I remember seeing commercials for it, thinking it was the most amazing thing ever, and then finding out it was what, $700? Back in the mid 90’s, that was probably the equivalent of $1500 now. Not even the rich kids I knew had that thing.
Yep, I developed a really unhealthy hatred of Sony having gone all in on 3do, then all in again with the Dreamcast. Swore I'd never purchase anything Sony for the rest of my life.

I remembered when The 3D0 came out in 1993. But was shocked at a 800 dollar price tag. I wanted one but got the N64 in 1996 and totally forgot the 3DO. I bought a used one a few years ago and realized that the 3do was just a glorified cd rom computer system passed on as a console

And ironically enough the turbo graphics did sold over 6 million units but there were only 94 games for it, but the turbo cd recieved 686 games for it despite it only sold 5,5 million units(500.000+ less then the actual console itself),that’s a totall of 780 games for it combined,
Alltrough the turbo CD still sold better then the sega cd and famicom disc system trough.

1972, by 75 you had the first pong unit and the PC-50x being the two more "innovative" for the time. 72 was when the odyssey was released and I don't think it's so much that it was primitive as why they put it on the list. It's more that Magnavox really didn't think ahead and the console was rendered obsolete in 3 years by better, more thought out consoles.

I must have had one of the upgrades, because I certainly don't remember the Odyssey being a white box. Then again, the only thing I do remember was the controller - it looked more like the love child of a cellphone and an iPod.
The Magnavox Odyssey came out in 1972 and was completely analog. There wouldn’t be videogame consoles without it. Also, there was no internet in 1991. Or if there was, I didn’t know about it.
In 1991 The internet was there, it just wasn't the world wide web. back then it was manual connection to what you wanted to see via direct ip address , mostly BBS systems at the time.
3DO had the best version of Street fighter 2, arcade perfect for its time

Sega CD was awesome. I remember playing Double Switch and more on it. It wasn't perfect and came out at the wrong time but worst than the Jaguar CD and all of these systems that no one bought? Completely ridiculous.

my favorite console was one i made out of a shoe box and a disk trey that it took out of a broken computer because my family couldn't afford a console. I called it the "Imagination Station." the good ol days...

I had the Panasonic 3DO. It wasn't as bad as all that. I owned 220 games on it. The worst part of it was connecting controller to controller to play multiplayer games. They did have a few that I loved to play at the time and would enjoy to reminisce over.

@Nostalgia Addict1978 yes except that you can not compare the video game market in 1990 with today's market that has become a mainstream and mass market. between 30 million and 40 million units sold for megadrive between 1988 and 1998 is a very good result, the super Nintendo has sold 50 million. Sega's problem is often the difference between the markets. The megadrive has sold in USA and Europe, but not at all in japan and in Asia, the Saturn, has the opposite etc. Where you're completely right, and it's not that sega besides is that the success of a console is not measured by the number of units sold, but the games it offer, its exclusives and in what it has contributed to the evolution of the video game.
Your age and experience speaks in this video, which clearly there is none.... all you have done is trash a generation of machines that helped shape the gaming landscape as you know it today, truth be known when these machines were released they all did quite well if you could afford them. Reality of the 80s and 90s game consoles is not everyone could afford them, but everyone knew someone with a console, hence, enter the early days of multiplayer!!!!! Multiple people sitting around one console sharing two to four controls.... now that was retro gaming....

How could you put the Odyssey on there? Without it the entire video game industry would be different. It's well known fact that the Odysseys Table Tennis game was the inspiration for Pong. Which led to mountains of Pong Consoles, without the Odyssey and later Pong, so many companies that started with Pong as their first consoles probably wouldn't exist. Atari for one, Coleco, and even Nintendo. Also a side note, no Nintendo would mean no PlayStation either since Nintendo's screw up with the Sony CD add on deal directly led to the PlayStation
I can understand your feelings here. I think the problem with the Odyssey was that even by the standards of its own time, it was being outdone by its competitors. The only games for it that were really fan favorites were "Quest For the Rings" and UFO.
That's like saying that there would be no video games industry without the Fairchild Channel F. Pong was a contemporary home console that at least had brand recognition, giving players a taste of what most people in the 70s had come to regard as the defacto video game that began the arcade revolution. Odyssey's gimmicky overlays can't cover the fact that from a technology as well as game play standpoint, it was pong without the hype.
Magnavox made the bonehead move of assuming that people would be so deliriously eager to get their hands on this half-baked attempt to get rich off the burgeoning game market that they were safe with the not-so-subtle implied notion that you needed a Magnavox TV and they would rush out and buy the floor model tv to hook up this new fangled hoosigigger and they would be snorting coke of disco bitches in no time.
It was that kind of business model that almost killed gaming. By the early 80s Atari was successful enough to take that thinking to the grave, along with the good will of the public. Magnavox, and the smattering of console and software companies that pre-date Atari's entry to homes didn't have a road map and took a certain amount of risk even trying to make a home game market, but it's the shady practice of trying to trick buyers into adopting more hardware, whether its a brand of TV, required but not stated-prior-to-purchase-peripherals. If you really look at the problems common to all of the systems on the list, it's basically dishonesty, underestimating gamers savvy, promising more than they are even remotely prepared to fulfill... In that sense, Pong's home version was possibly the only honest system in history. Pong. That's what it says on the box. That's what people wanted, and what they got. It did Pong and Pong. No extra stuff to buy and no suggestion that you needed a brand of TV. No secret agenda. Pong.
You are comparing the first Odyssey with the games of the Odyssey 2.

Agreed, i went from Sega 32x to the 3DO and was blown away by road rash, nfs etc. It had a huge catalogue of crap games but that was mainly because of the open format, anyone could release just about anything for it like the softcore plumbers don't wear ties or the strip game sewer shark. You had to look hard for the gems but they were there. The stupid 700$ killed it, when the PS1 showed up it killed it on price and devsupport .
Most of these list type things are based on sales and popularity, and not on actual quality anyway (Watchmojo aren't the only ones that do that formula, but they are one of the most guilty of doing lists like that)
I love 3DO. It deserves more respect.
Same here, has really good games for its time, was advanced like the dream cast was. But too expensive, devs werent really there. I still have my 3d0, I heard its worth good $$$. Also had some prety cool exclusives which were weird lol, but still awesome.
Mine was stolen with my goldstar and other older systems...They are worth more now

***** There is nothing that a console does better than a PC. A console is just a low end PC. You can do everything you can do on a console, on a PC. You can use console controllers with PC's, you must know this.
I worked at Philips when they released the CDI. Everybody in the company knew it was late to market, way under-powered and overpriced, with a minuscule software catalog. Even my employee discount couldn't persuade me to buy one.
Came very very close to getting a 3DO for Christmas in 1995. Playstation came out and I got that instead. So glad I did!

I ended up getting the 3DO, the SEGA Saturn and the PS1. And I still have all three.
Doug Smith I got my 3DO in 94 when the price dropped to $299. Got my PS1 in Sept of 95 and my Saturn Christmas of 95. I still have all three connected to a 37" JVC Crt in my classic game room along with all of my old school consoles up to the Original XBox.
It's the same list over and over. None of these lists ever include the C64GS, the GX4000 Etc.

3DO only had games that were interactive movies? Nope, that's not true. The system was crap. But it had some decent games, and it certainly had games that weren't interactive movies.
Yep I had it and there was a great death racing game, unfortunately it also had Jurassic Park which was terrible. It truly had very little to offer game wise in the end.
3do had the best arcade ports at the time for 'Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo' and 'Samurai Showdown'. It gave us the original Need for Speed and the best Road Rash game ever. Oh, and Gex was pretty cool too. That was about it :)
Killing time, PO'ed, Return fire, Star Fighter, a few more decent ones
Crash and Burn was epic at the time also
it had Super Street Fighter Turbo as an exclusive until PS got it years later. Also had Samurai Shodown much cheaper than the Neo Geo version and more true to the arcade than the SNES and Genesis versions of the time. Also I liked Gex, Crash N' Burn. It had a few goodies.
Sega CD was and still is great. Lunar Silver Star, Lunar 2, Vay, Popfull Mail are great. It just fell due to costs. Also, I still own my Jag and Jag CD. There is a company who still makes games for it lol

I had a 3DO in the 90s and it was awesome my favorite game was Star Control II I played it so much and often I broke the controller.
Loved my 3DO too...the origin of NFS...and pannys version better than latter versions on other consoles of the time.
Also loved Total Eclipse, Gex and Road Rash et al.

Obviously the writer/narrator has little to no experience with most of the stuff here. The 3DO was $700 initially but dropped to $500 after 6 months or so (not sure on the exact timeframe) but it was not $700 until the bitter end. He describes a few FMV games and that's it, making it look like that's all the 3DO had. I agree that the system isn't mindblowing or anything but damn the misinformation spilled here is amazing. Definitely a channel I shall avoid in the future.

Let's see, I currently have a Magnovox Odyssey, I also have a Panasonic 3DO, and I have an Atari Jaguar with the CD expansion. I do understand the hit against the 3D0, although not all of the games were interactive movies including my favorite Rise of the Robots, however considering the technology at the time, the original Odyssey was actually very good. It was improved a couple of years later with the Odyssey 2 (also a console that I currently own). I really take exception to your comments about the Jaguar. There were some really fun games for the Jaguar. Club Drive, Iron soldier, AvP, Doom, Ultra Vortex, Rayman, Theme Park, Attack of the Mutant Penguins, CyberMorph, Defender 2000... I could go on and on, but your complaint is their marketing scheme??? It was the exact opposite of what you said. They were saying gamers are smart enough to figure out that buying a $300 32bit system isn't a good deal, while buying a $149 64bit system is a great deal. As for the controller, I actually like it better than the controllers we use today where I have to remember combinations of buttons instead of just pushing one. I don't disagree with most on your list, but including these three on your list for the reasons you gave is simply ridiculous.

I got a Virtual Boy Christmas Day of 1995 and have a Sega CD, 3DO and CD-I today, neither of which I paid full price for.

Well Nintendo was more like buying time with Virtual Boy. Everyone was replacing old consoles with new with 64 bits etc. But Nintendo didnt have that one yet they were in that time working on Nintendo 64 but they needed time to finish that console. So they released Virtual Boy Half Done(Yeah thats right Virtual boy was just a project that was supposed to be released waay too longer )
But it went quite well. They got their times and released really great console.
Also reaction to Anthonator 3DS is closer to the Virtual boy than Wii U cause Wii U is like something totally different. Its like saying "correction, Gamecube" it will make totally same sense. but 3DS has 3D graphics so did Virtual Boy.

The Magnavox Odyssey came out in 1972 when the chips needed to even make a programmable videogame console didn't even exist. It would be 3 years until the MOS 6507 didn't become publicly available until 1975 and it was originally intended for applications like running microwave ovens, washing machines (which is where it was extensively used) and traffic lights. Also, the 3DO entry is also crap, it had a whole bunch of games that weren't the usual full motion video crap. That description may fit the Sega MegaCD (just Sega CD in north america), but not the 3DO.
As for the Dreamcast, what ruined it's reputation was not the Mega Drive with it's addons, but Saturn and it's failure against the Playstation and Nintendo 64. To explain how badly the Saturn lost to the original Playstation you can just mention the fact that just the announcement of the Playstation 2 pretty much killed the Dreamcast.

Nick Germon The reason why I'm saying that it's the iPhone of consoles is because I've had smartphones both before and after the iPhone. My first smartphone was a Nokia 3650 that I got in in 2003. The original iPhone was pretty much a dumbphone and had less features than the smartphone that I bought in 2003, so you can guess how disappointed I was when I saw smartphones actually regressing feature wise when chasing the iPhone. The original iPhone did not do anything my 3650 didn't do, it just did the some of same things better.

Consoles that came before it had swappable games that came on cartridges. Consoles before it had third party titles. Consoles before it had all kinds of weird peripherals. Hell the CPU was even a fairly close relative of the one used in the Atari 2600 (a modified MOS 6502 when the 2600 used a cut down version if it called the 6507).

Even the first android phone looked like the old style phones then the iPhone came out. They scrapped that prototype and made it look and function more like an iPhone. I remember playing Twisted on my friend 3DO system, that was a fun game. I also remember seeing the infomercials for CDi and thought it was the coolest and since they had Link, I had to have it. Good thing I never ended up getting it, lol

I've never seen the 3DO so misrepresented. Making it seem like FMV games were the dominant genre on the console. 3DO had the best versions of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Samurai Shodown, Hideo Kojima's Policenauts, Return Fire, The original Need For Speed, Star Control 2, the best versions of Madden, etc. Out of all the consoles on this list, its the only one that could be redeemed by its library of games. Its price was its biggest negative. Also Naughty Dog and Crystal Dynamics got their starts on the 3DO, and look how they turned out.

YES!! Lots of excellent games, but it would have been worth it just for the best port of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. My best friend and I both bought one later in its lifecycle when the price dropped to $400 and we also had SNES-to-3DO controller adapters, enabling us to use arcade quality fight sticks with it (I think they were made by a company named MAS(?)). We spent HUNDREDS of hours playing that game - there was nothing close to it on any home console at the time (or for years to come, for that matter). Zero regrets over buying that console!!
i had a 3do. And i spent a lot of good time with a lot of nice games. I remember the need of speed ,was really something new in race games at this time. Killing time was the first person action game i finish and i wll never forget it. Gex was a very good platform game. Had games from any kind, and some of them had fmv elements inside them but was not just interactive movies (maybe have some, but i never play them). 3do was a good console and open the road for the cd-reading consoles.
The 3DO was fantastic for its time. I think I played Foes of Ali for 18 months straight. It was a great machine for its time 👍

Exactly, after seeing road rash running on my mates 3DO, I couldn't even bear to switch my mega drive on anymore, it was a great system, just suffered from being an expensive trailblazer, playstation came along at just he right time and the rest is history.
I saved up for so long for the 3DO. I had a hard on for it. By the time I finally had a enough to buy one, my friend was telling me about the PS1 that was due for release, and how he was definitely going to invest. I was skeptical, but my friend was adamant that it would piss all over the 3DO. He eventually convinced me, and to this day, I'll always remember how close I came to what would have been the worst decision of my life. True story

+barry wallace it will be hard to convince me of that, since the PlayStation1 wasn't half the console the 3D0 was. once Sony bought the rights, they took the games also, but not all, because the PlayStation couldn't pull it off, didn't have built-in memory, and had an a significantly longer load time, just to name a few weaknesses. Sony made up for it with an extensive game library later, but there are still a lot that were exclusive to the 3DO, and are considered groundbreaking games.

The Pioneer LaserActive was a good system, but expensive. The MegaDrive and PC Engine modules gave it the largest library of games in that era.

Road Rash was originally a Sega Genesis/Megadrive game before the 3DO even came around, but 3DO still wasn't that bad.
